[Q] Bringing a Moto Charm back to life? - Flipout and Charm General

I've got an old Moto Charm and all it does is boot up and show the Motorola logo. I haven't found a clear concise guide yet to how I might make this thing working again. It looks like it'd be great for old GameBoy games. Can it be flashed to a ROM (stock or otherwise) in this state or is it just dead at this point?

So can I get some info on the X because I currently own an Incredible but have about a week now to switch. How do the two phones compare? Exactly how much can I do to the X? Currently my Incredible is rooted and using custom ROM and theme.
Thanks for the help in advance.
(Oh and is it true you can get rid of the UI on the X? I have a friend claiming he did)

you can get rid of about 95% of the blur, some has to stay but its being worked on, custom roms are just starting to roll out. However the kernel is locked so no major tampering with the cpu yet.
I had the inc for about a week or two, X is a big upgrade. I wouldnt switch back.
The Droid X wins in every category you can think of but UI(senses). Custom roms/themes are being worked on, and since we rooted and have deodex'd we are fastly moving foward....
So you guys think I should switch? And would you say it's easier or harder to root than the Inc?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I have the best phone possible for the next 18 months lol.
Droid X is easy to root on 2.1 just use Universal Androot Beta 1.6.2(Link is clickable) for easy installation of apk for phone for a 1-click root solution. but if you want root on 2.2 require a bit more work but its still easy.
Well looks like you convinced me to get the Droid X!

But I came from the INC and I can basically do EVERYTHING that I coulddo with the INC on the X... except kernal modding.. obviously.

You know it MrDanger...
only issue you may have, well 2. When taking pics you will think they are horrible when looking at them on the phone, but when you look at them on a comp they are better than the inc. Just something i noticed when switching. And if you frequently use the speaker, (music or voice) the volume is stupid low...
Just thought i would give you a heads up on the only things i have noticed.
Thanks for the help guys, only problem is after going to verizon today I kind of want the Fascinate
I suppose the screen is a big plus, but I hear it feels cheap when compared to the build quality of the X.... not that I beat my phone up on purpose...
I have both (got my X today). Sense and it's quirks are vastly superior to Blur, but I won't keep a phone stock if I can find a real vanilla build. I do miss things like having a dialer that doesn't suck and some of the skins for sense. I could use Sense builds, but I can tell there is no way I'll want to use any of the Blur crap (except DNLA, which looks neat).
The device itself the X wins hands down. The look and feel of the actual device is just.. better. It's faster overall (I get quad scores about as fast as my SkyRaider build without OC) and the screen looks great and it doesn't ever lag for me. The downside is that it's huge and I don't use a case. One slap in the junk with this thing from my pocket when I was trotting down some steps had me thinking twice.
But the INC has lots of customizations and badass devs (SkyRaider/Cyanogen/Virt/Redemption and now Ruby), and I'm kind of just checking out how active it is over here to see how much support it will get. I know the Ruby guys just got an X so that would satisfy me pretty well and they seem to have 2 or 3 devs that seem dedicated.
In a few weeks/months I think the X will have some good things coming. Once they do, I will like the phone more than the INC.
Just remember the Fascinate does not have a LED notifier but there are some hacks around. There is no HDMI out either. I have to admit the screen colors are amazing as well as the form factor, but it almost feels cheap. I love the screen size on the DX, its fast, ruins cool and the developers are flocking to the device since Koush made the Bootstrap recovery. Some of the developers already are, Pete(BB), Koush, ChevyNo1, Birdman, P3, cvpcs(Sapphire), the guys behind Rubix, JRummy was talking recently about getting one and I am sure I missed a few. I would also like to see the UnRevoked team get their hands on a DX to work their bootloader magic.
New Roms on their way are FlyX 1.0 and Obsidian(cvpcs) said he only needs a week from delivery of his X for release which means it could be by next weekend.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I have the incredible for a few weeks now, a few days left in my 30 day window (like 4 haha). I like the device, but the battery life irks me (which is kind've silly since I'm not a heavy user and have had no issues making it through a day with the stock battery. still, I'd like a device that I can use without watching the percentage drop in a few minutes). My two brothers got the X, I went with the incredible as (mostly) I was impatient and liked the hackability it has. Having actually used the device, the ability to load custom roms is nice and all, but using a stock rom isn't really much of a difference for my use. Of concern to me is primarily dumping the Verizon trash but as long as the phone's rootable it's doable. I use Skyraider vanilla but I don't have any real reason that I couldn't use a stock rom.
I've spent many hours trying to come to a conclusion and I've not gotten anything conclusive from online posts and such, everyone seems to get caught up in the 'omg its sooooo big', followed quickly by their gripes with the 'blur-but-not-blur' implementation. I use LauncherPro anyways so much of Blur's issues are not a concern. My only reasonable complaint is the hardware buttons on the X's face vs the touch ones on the incredible, but this is minor imo.
I hate having to babysit my phone to get the best of the battery and the bump charging stuff rubs me the wrong way. I'm coming from an iphone 3g and the widget capabilities are so great, but to save battery on my incredible I have only one auto updating widget, despite desiring more. Separate concern is how Verizon would handle the return since I'm near to my 30 days and the X wouldn't ship for a handful of days, and returning the incredible before that time would render me without a phone. I'm probably going to call them tomorrow and see what they'll do. Perhaps I can get the phone and see how it fares in my normal usage patterns.
If anyone has any input I would much appreciate it as I need something to push me over the edge. Granted, this is the X forum so I doubt anyone will give the incredible much love.

[Q] Help! Setup Wiz Crashes after Factory Reset!

I just rooted my (R2-D2) Droid 2 two days ago using the app z4root (via 4shared). I'm on stock 2.2 (and by that I mean what came on the phone, so it's actually a light Blur 2.2)
Then I wanted to get rid of some of the bloatware, so I downloaded Bloat Freezer (still available on the Market) to do that. After freezing whatever apps I saw fit, I returned to see my homescreen black. I did some research and apparently this stems from "freezing" something to do with MotoBlur. I know for sure that I froze "Files" and "AccountSync", which apparently caused this problem with other people.
Supposedly a factor reset would fix it, but it didn't. So that's why I'm here.
So first I tried a normal reboot. That didn't work. Then I did a factory reset. I got all the way through the Setup Wizard, and then it took me back to the "Touch the Android to Begin" screen instead of closing to the home screen like normal. When I try to go through the Wizard again it crashes after syncing an account. I've tried three or four factory resets and this happens every time.
People had this problem while they were on other ROMs and supposedly flashing back to the original OS (not stock, but "stock" i.e. what Motorola put on the phone before), but I'm not on any other kind of ROM so I don't know if that would help.
Should I flash back to the original? Can I even do that if I haven't flashed an alternative ROM? Should I just try flashing to a different ROM (MIUI or Bugless Beast)? Can you even flash a ROM if you can't access most of the phone (the only things I have access to are my email [when the message icon pops up] and the hard reset menu thing)?
Note: Sorry if this isn't in the right thread, I couldn't figure out where to put malfunction type things. Mods can move it to where ever is appropriate. I also searched both XDA and the entire internet and either no one has this problem in the EXACT way I do (i.e. not on any special ROM) or the thread is extremely, extremely dead. So that's why I made the decision to post a new thread about it. Thanks!
Edit: I re-flashed my phone with RDS Lite, and while the homescreen is back it's extremely, extremely laggy. At first I thought it was broken again until I realized it was just taking so long to respond to my finger swipes. Right now it's trying to download 46 apps in the background, so I'll wait until that's done to try again. But I had faster responses even when everything was all broken and it was trying to install 46+ apps..
Those people were right. Find the .SBF file for your version of the Droid 2 and sbf back to "stock". That should fix you problem.
I'm in the process of RSDLite-ing right now, I wasn't sure if it would help though.. Stay tuned!

Did you use the file specific to your phone? Either way, you should be able to get it back. Someone ripped out all the stuff from the R2D2 phone back when it came out. It's on the net somewhere.
I love Miui. It definitely performs better than stock and is much faster. I love the polished menu system and the included GB features are great. I especially love how you can customize practically everything. It has also greatly improved my battery life. I've been getting up to 20 hours on my standard extended battery. Good stuff. And if you don't like the iOSuck look of Miui, you can always download a different launcher (like ADW) and use that (like I did). Overall it performs surprisingly well considering it's on a locked phone.
(I've played with CM7 on my Incredible and PE on my now retired OG Droid. Miui definitely performs better.)

Like others have told me, you're just going to have to try them and see for youself. Different people have different experiences so it is difficult to determine which is better without some kind of experience with them.

[Q] Droid X and Chainfire 3D

Quick Question: I saw some similar questions posted but something about the Droid X not keeping root to run Chainfire 3D. Did not answer my question, N/A.
My phone is a Droid X, Gingerbread, Android 2.3.3, fully rooted with Linux One Click. I am trying to play Dead Space for Android and it just does not work. Black screen, checking for updates, faint EA logo, then back to desktop.
I asked if anybody had Dead Space running on a Droid X in another forum and one fellow said, yes, it works fine if you install the free, market Chainfire 3D driver and use the Qualcomm plugin. I did all this and the phone behaves exactly the same. He also recommended using 16 bit color and reduced texture size. No difference. I find this rather odd, I can see no difference in the phone or any game with or without the Chainfire 3D driver. I do not know how the driver loads, I looked into Terminal and used lsmod to read what modules the kernel is loading and I see nothing relevant to graphics loading. Very few modules were loaded. I used the CF Bench tool to test if the driver is really running but I cannot tell, I got a low score, 2415, above the HTC Hero, Samsung Galaxy topping the comparison chart with 6442. This is not telling me what I want to know.
Does Chainfire 3D work on a rooted Droid X 2.3.3? How can you tell? Is Dead Space ever going to run on this phone or am I chasing mermaids?
Thanks.
I got it to run "Sprinkle" (before a single core version was released) with the Nvidia Plugin...
Never really tried any other game.
So it must work, as Chainfire was the ONLY reason it would load.
I was also on a 2nd-init rom though...which may have some impact?

Thanks. Not sure what Sprinkle is but you proved the driver is somewhat effective, though. I too thought the nvidia plugin would be best as I run all of my PC games on nvidia, even Linux. Wow, Descent ran really, really good on Linux. Too bad I cannot get this DX to do what I want, but I guess this phone, as cool as it really is, is getting a bit long in the tooth. Time to start shopping.
I have not done any ROM'ing yet. I got one click Linux to root my OTA Gingerbread and I thought that was pretty cool, I do not want to break it but if a new ROM could bring some life into this old phone, I would do it. Thoughts? Any of you ROM your Droid X phones to gain significant advantages over stock? I do not want to do it "just to be different" as the phone layout is pretty good, but if a ROM could change the desktop into something really cool, that actually worked (Not like Gnome 2/Compiz) then it would be worth it.
MIUI is super nice.
You do, however, miss out on 720p and HDMI.
But that's all.
And (drama broke out recently, so details are sketchy) there may (probably not) be a public release of a fix that fixes 720p and HDMI on the horizon.

The MIUI MOD is nice, but I am not "Anti-Verizon" and "Anti-Motorola". I just don't like VZ Navigator, a pay app, running all the time and I cannot remove it. Same for some of the other stuff. There were some good themes too, MIUI does not have an app drawer, ouch. And stuff is broken. I am not ready to go beta on anything yet for something so essential as a cell phone. It is also kind of "Macintosh". But great links and education, thnx.

I really need to keep this thread on topic, although the advice and ROM information is much appreciated dudes.
ANY 3D GAMERS OUT THERE WITH A DROID X? HOW DID YOU GET A GOOD 3D GAME TO RUN ON A DROID X? Chainfire? nvidia? What games? Dead Space? Anyone?
Close topic please
Moderator, could you please close this discussion? It is old and has outlived it's usefulness. I no longer have the Droid X but now have a Droix Razr Maxx, XT912. I never got really good 3D performance with the Droid X except for Toon Wars. The graphics in that game led me to believe that the unit could do better 3D gaming. But the internal video chip is not very powerful and not even Chainfire can help with that.
Bottom Line:
If you want or need better gaming or 3D video performance, get a newer and better phone like the Samsung Galaxy or anything like that. The Droid X is one very cool phone but a gaming workhouse it is not. Topic closed. OP no longer subscribing to threads.

Help me find the right ROM for me

I have Droid X, running stock .621, rooted.
I just got my wife an HTC One S, running ICS and I'm jealous.
Right now, I'm just waiting out the days until Verizon offers something worth using my upgrade on. Looks like that's still going to be at least a couple of months away.
In the meantime, I'd like to breathe some fresh life into my DX, but I don't want something buggy.
I need working GPS, Camera (video would be nice too), phone functions. I'd like to be able to install Swype. I'd like flash to work. Working bluetooth would would be nice. Maybe I could live without some stuff, but at least I'd like to know what I'd be getting into before I install something.
I don't care about (or even really want) themes, different fonts, additional lock screens, funky notification bar icons or anything like that. I'd be perfectly happy with stock ICS, if it wasn't buggy.
Does something like that even exist or because there's no official ICS for the DX, there are always going to be some major bugs/issues?
If there's something worth trying, I'll be happy to give it a go. I understand that I'll have to do a data wipe, what's the best way to restore my data after a ROM update? Do I just back up user apps and user app data with Titanium before the update and then just restore all of that after or is there a better/safer/easier way to migrate ROMs?
I do already have CWM installed, so, I think, I just have to boot up, get into the CWM menu and do the data/cache wipe and then load the ROM zip file to upgrade ROM, right? At least that's the general directions? Once I figure out exactly which ROM, if any, I'll ask for further help so that I don't screw it up.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Got some help in another forum last night and wound up installing Gummy ICS. I really screwed up the process and wound up having to SBF, but it was a good learning experience.
I'm truly stunned as to how much more responsive the phone is as compared to GB Stock. We'll see if it stays that way, but, right now, I'm thrilled.
Few little annoyances here and there, but my goal really was just to add a little live to an aging phone and give me a refreshed toy to hold me over until an acceptable upgrade phone becomes available.

Not really. ICS on the Droid X was just way too buggy for me. In addition to all of the non-working things that people will tell you, I had other issues. My browsing was very slow on some sites with javascript on. I suspect due to the lack of hardware acceleration on ICS. Also, my radio.com app would cut the feed off after about 2 minutes of audio.
After Gummy, I had also tried AOKP. Both are nearly identical.
I wound up with VXR (Vortex Reloaded) using the ICSish them. Very, very happy with it.
Not as fast as the ICS ROMS (those ICS ROMS just flew), but everything works 100% perfectly and it still did clear up some of the major issues I was having with stock (CPU pegging at 100% for long periods, dialer getting hung up not allowing me to make calls).
With the ICSish theme, it looks like I'm on ICS even.
The DX and ICS weren't made for each other (not unless they release ICS drivers ever). People who tinker a lot might just live with the bugs because it's fun and it sure is fast, but it wasn't for me.

Effin Battery!

It's the 4.4.2 upgrade. Ever since it went on the phone I have to keep location services off or Android OS will eat my battery.
I wouldn't be worrying about this if there was an active CM dev effort for this phone, but it really looks like this phone is (already!) being dropped. Nobody's worked on the X8 unified build in a month. Starting to think this phone was a mistake.
I remember reading some of the blogs looking for a flagship phone with a mid-size screen. All the "mini" versions are dual core 1.7GHz systems. It's not that nobody would build a midsize with a hot quadcore, it's just that you can't fit enough battery for a hot quad behind a medium display. And by the time I went through all the available dual-core phones (at Verizon, anyway), really nothing comes close to the Moto X.
But I think this could be a dead end. The last three days or so I've been reading how Google's wrapping up 4.4.3, and it looks like these battery leaks are one of their priorities. But without CM, I wonder how long it will take to get that build through VZW and the other carriers.
Cm and what not aren't too popular, as you lose all those nice moto features.
And flip through this thread a bit and you'll see a lot of battery issues solved or worked around.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418077
But yes...depending what else is on your phone and accessing location services....location services can be a battery drain. Toggle when needed is usually my advice. But....there's ways to get it under control. Check out the thread I linked. Massive amounts of good info in there.

Flashed back to stock just for moto features but all seemed well on CM. Didn't use it long enough to test battery. I believe they've unified the builds to work with all variants.

Yeah, the nightlies are generated automatically, and I imagine they include incremental CM changes. But like I said, it's been about a month since the last device-specific check-in, and the feedback I'm hearing is that the speaker phone is broken ever since then.
If you use the snapdragon battery guru app it helps soooo much I get 24 hours of battery daily . Make sure you turn your screen brightness down as much as possible also . Try OSE it was amazing on my atrix HD you can find the builds at Dr.devs website .

I found the BBC Weather was keeping my phone awake all the time. Only worked that out after a factory reset. I'd suggest giving your phone a wipe, it's not ideal at all but it sorted mine out. I reckon the 4.4.2 update has screwed up location somewhow.
Go to play store.
Check all your installed apps and uninstall any that have not been updated since kit kat release.

They stopped working on individual devices, And are now doing Unified builds. MSM8960dt works on all Moto X phones, and I believe RAZR MAXX phones as well. Why do the same thing 8 times when it can be done once? Try PAC ROM. 8960DT, use it all day, and battery rarely dips below 60%.

I don't think that is what the poster above meant when he was talking about device specific builds.
By that he meant Moto X specific and not all individual moto x models.
Current nightless are adding new stuff that is getting added to all cm builds. But not fixing any known issues with our phone like the speaker phone issue. To fix that, some developer will have to work on Moto X specific code which will probably work on all Moto X models.
This is the main reason I am not running cm. ( That and active notifications. But I can live without active notifications if all basic functions are working properly including speakerphone and camera) . love the performance, but I need to use speakerphone a lot when speaking and working on my computer at the same time or when my hands are dirty.
From my Moto X, in your face!
