Hi there, my phone has been acting wonky the past week or so. I'd like to just factory reset (under settings or safestrap) not sure which one is better.
I am rooted running stock with some apps frozen.
What's the best way to reset without loosing root and safestrap?

You will not lose root from a factory data reset. All an FDR does is wipe caches, davlik, and system cache. It does not replace files or software, like it would if someone were to odin a firmware tar.

you are totally wrong lol. a fdr does wipe the system so he would need to have a rom.zip stored on his internal storage/ext sdcard... if he uses SS to do a factory reset he will not boot until he flashes a rom.
now if he does an advanced wipe and selects only the caches thats a different story

yikes! So I won't use SS to wipe. If I just factory reset under settings....should I unfreeze all my apps first? When I boot up again the phone will have all the stock apps, and nothing more correct?

worst that will happen u will have to odin a stock tar and reroot.. i would back up all your pictures n everything onto a ext sdcard or pc.. essentially, a fdr from settings or the stock android recovery will make it like new again if you havent flashed a custom rom but i never use it.. i would always just odin a stock tar or use ss fdr and flash a stock rooted rom.zip through ss

Oh boy lol....
Ok so if I odin back to nha, take Ota to ni2, odin stock ncg kernel, root with towelroot, odin stich ni2, reboot. I should be fresh out of the box right?
Then I can download ss and install.

yup.. if u have to.. like i said, if ur already rooted with ss installed you might as well wipe in ss and just flash a stock rooted ni2 rom

Just to clear this up a factory data reset from the settings menu and safestrap do the same thing. It resets the settings, removes any user installed apps as it wipes data folder where your user installed apps are stored. It will be the same ROM you flashed minus any user apps, root and safestrap will remain. If you enter safestrap and do a advanced wipe with system checked and try to boot without flashing a ROM you will have to Odin back to stock to boot back up because the system will be gone. Lastly if you enter the stock recovery and reset from there it will do the same thing as SS and the settings menu. The only way to return to stock is Odin. Hope this clears up any confusion.

what he said lol. i was just going off my past experience.. wiping via stock recovery caused me to have to odin back to stock.. it bootlooped and i didnt have ss recovery any longer.. ss default fdr has system wipe on as default so if you use tge default wipe you need to have another rom available to flash in ss or you will need to odin. Or of course do advanced wipe and unselect the wipe system portion.
theoretically, stock fdr should only wipe as misterxtc stated.. i suggest back up your stuff and try it and let us know how it goes lol

Okay so I did exactly what you said. I wiped the phone from inside settings. When I booted it back up it was back to stock, because I'm not running a ROM. I did notice that when I signed into Google some of my apps started automatically redownloading. Actually almost all of them did. I am still rooted, & I do still have safestrap on my phone.
My question at this point is, I no longer have the safestrap app or the towel root app in my app drawer, but should I redownload them just so that they are in my app drawer? Will that affect the phone at all?

No you don't need them anymore. SS is where it needs to be regardless if it's in your app drawer or not. As long as you see it on boot up your good. Towelroot can be uninstalled after the root process is done, it's a one shot deal unless you Odin back to stock.

No problem, I started about one year ago. I learned very early that a good backup and Odin are your best friends. lol It's pretty hard to mess up the phone beyond Odin or a backup, I've done some pretty risky things.

ive been on xda since the first galaxy phone made.
i also work for a cellular company..
i have never done a factory reset on my phone (obviously haha) i always use backups or just fresh installs

To return to stock I was wondering if it was better to use odin or the One Click Recovery.

You need Recovery to change your Roms. Odin won't do that. If you looking to flash Roms, One Click by noobnl. If you wanna go back to Factory. Odin.
so then in all the threads when they say wipe everything they mean the clockwork recovery stuff. not a system wipe
Simple explination: When they say wipe, they mean inside of clockwork recovery you choose the option to wipe the cache, it would be like formatting a hard drive before you install a new windows os, u want to make sure all the old files and disk errors are gone. Same thing here, the cache is where the data/settings are stored.

Not to be mean but no cache does not wipe your data. It's the equivalent to clearing cache on your browser. When a rom thread calls for a wipe they mean wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and go to advanced wipe dalvik cache.

I don't know about the whole format thing... guess you look at it that way. It only clears a part, and there's a few of those. But when you wipe your clearing all your data and setting. Each rom is built different. So in some cases you'll need to wipe to make sure nothing from the previous messes you up. The OP (thread starter) of the rom will say when to wipe. Should always wipe between roms. Cool thing is, you can advance restore your stuff back. ; ) or Titanium Backup. But something will alway catch you off guard or you'll forget. So have multi ways of backup. In clockwork you will see back up (Nand Backup as they call it), this backs everything up, if you mess up you can always go back like it was with restore. Have fun and don't let it piss you off.

With respect a454nova it should be clearer than that. If a rom says to wipe, the clockwork recovery probably should not be used to restore data because the ROM poster is probably putting something in data along with changing the system files. Titanium can be used judiciously to restore data files but only with full knowledge of what the OP has put in the data directory. Best practice is to use listables and download everything new then restore only items that could not be downloaded from the market

this is the first time I had to be stuck on a "stock rom" , my phone has MF3/rooted. But was wondering, in case some apps start to act kinda weird.
does the wipe data/fatory reset in the stock recovery is the options to wipe everything and and start fresh ?
Example on my S2 or other devices if something is acting weird, I will just go to CWM wipe cache, wipe dalvik/cache/ format /system and flash again... How can this be achieved with the MF3 ?

You can't do the same things as you could with a custom recovery. That's why you have to be real careful with root on mf3. There is no odin either.

Thanks well yeah I know that MF3 has to be treated with tweezers lol... its very easy to break it. But then what are the options if we need to start fresh ? So factory data reset is the only thing it can be done or this is also kinda risky once we are rooted ? Also what does wipe data/factory reset on stock recovery is used for ?
I thought that it came with some sort of recovery image to be self flashed and put the phone in a bone stock form, because there is some "used" space but can't be accessible for user storage.

Doing a factory data reset through the factory recovery should be just fine. It will remove your root along with everything else and make it all factory. (as long as you haven't messed with your recovery partition)
Is there a zip we can flash in TWRP or CWM to go back to stock? I'm stock rooted with a couple tweaks (like hotshot mod) and I want to revert to full stock to take the MJA OTA. I'd of course need to manually flash the stock recovery afterwards via odin for the OTA to work.

If you had research. Restoring data on 4.3 messes up your phone. You should stick with mf9 for now really. The only good thing about 4.3 is gear support but come with knox security which is being a pain in the a** for people now. But thats my opinion

4.3 should have the TRIM support (the main reason that I was interested in it)

I did research, the concensus was that titanium backup restoring wasn't working, and that was only when restoring the app itself (installing from the Play Store then restoring data only works). But restoring the actual data partition should be fine.
Or if that's an issue, and I had to wipe data, then I would just restore data right after odining to stock MF9 before taking the OTA.

If you use the stock mf9 tar to return to stock, all of your data will still be there, it does not wipe your data. Your system partition will be overwritten along with recovery, bootloader, and modem. But it will not touch your data. Download the one from sammobile and you should be fine.

Yeah trust me, there's a lot more good to 4.3 than just gear support. Trim support was my most anticipated feature i was looking forward to as well, but I can tell a huge difference In the clarity of the screen, and colors as well. Battery life on stock kernel has been ridiculously good.

I have rooted and rooted but have also gone back and forth to stock. I am considering it yet again. Is there way to delete ALL content on phone or in other words format the phone to reflash it to stock?
I have the stock ROM file and so can easily ODIN everything back, right?
I want to do this because I keep ending up with apps that I earlier removed from my phone and the google installed apps. Yet they still appear. Somewhere, older content is still being pointed to from my device.... not sure why or how....

And to answer your question, you need to wipe data, cache and Dalvik in recovery, or use a tar file or one click (if available) that does this step for you.

It's your internal SD card. When you wipe data in recovery it skips the data/media folder. You have to wipe that separately. That's why your old stuff keeps coming back when you flash something new. You haven't been wiping the data/media folder. Some of the better recoveries like TWRP and Philz Recovery have the option to wipe data//media. I'm not sure about the other recoveries.

What sleepy cloud said. But formatting SD Card and doing a factory reset (in the Settings > Account area) can also clear out a lot of data.

Can I wipe this myself using Windows, using format? And then using Odin to reinstall stock?

Just use Odin to flash the stock firmware. Then do a factory reset in the stock recovery.

Im planning to reflash my phone back to stock as a few things are messed up, will be flashing via odin the base firmware is UEND6 and will reflash the same firmware so that I can still root w/o tripping knox, would reflashing via Odin clear user data?

I guess just flashing the firmware won't wipe the data.
I flashed stock over a CM install and forgot to wipe data. My stuff was still there but the install was definitely a little bit unstable with background apps crashing. It didn't wipe data, but the phone needed a data wipe afterwards to be usable...

I kinda need to get my data back before wiping, I installed 3 new xposed modules and I am not 100% sure which of the 3 is causing the issue, Im stuck at the Samsung logo.

Im wondering if factory reset would delete camera photos stored on the internal memory, if not I have most of my impt stuff backed up online.

Install TWRP recovery (will trip knox) and make a TWRP backup of the entire phone including data partition. Once inside TWRP recovery you can also mount /data and adb pull whatever data you need from it, including the backup. Not sure what to do if you need to access embedded app data that you can not pull through adb.

Still waiting for the download to complete. Samfirmware is only giving me 300kb/s and I dont know where else to get stock firmwares.
To close this issue with a resolved status, I would like to say one thing.
If you flash a leaked firmware - it will wipe your phone.
If you flash a stock firmware - it will NOT wipe your phone.
Factory reset will not wipe your internal SD.
Installing TWRP or anything unofficial will trip your KNOX. If your data is worth losing warranty - go for it
I was with a UEND6 firmware and just gonna flash the same to get my data back and factory reset the phone.
EDIT:
Got my data, everything seems to be perfectly working aside from the task manger, Gonna factory reset the phone and probably reflash with odin to have a clean start, would ticking repartition be necessary for a fresh install ? ( but I remember that required a PIT file )
