Does the stylus scratch the screen?
Do you guys think that a screen protector is necessary or advisable?
And if it is advisable, will it affect the stylus and finger performance?
interesting question, as the current word on the street is the Note doesn't have Gorilla Glass...
i doubt it would though- but that's only my assumptions..
as its Anti-scratch resistant screen .i don't think the s-pen will scratch the screen but it more like in long term it possible when you put in your pocket with coins or keys , that would scratch the screen it i think.
my old phone was anti scratch screen too but still got few scratch on it from the house keys and coin in my pocket
ps btw i am using the note without screen protector.
I've always gone naked on my phones; no screen protector and no case. I can't stand the extra bulk/film. Even back in the days of windows mobile 5 and 6 with HTC phones that had PLASTIC screens that actually deformed under the stylus pressure, I didn't have scratching issues. I've always kept my phone in my left pocket (upside down with screen facing leg for quick and easy retrieval in the proper position) with NOTHING else in the pocket.
I've never understood the screen protector thing. For the most part manufacturers make the screens much harder and more abrasion resistant than any plastic film you'll find in a screen protector. I saw a guy yesterday using some Verizon droid with a screen protector that was scratched and foggy, and all I could think is "WTF, he wants to protect his screen so it doesn't get scratched up, decreasing visibility and looking ugly, yet that's exactly the experience he's receiving!" Lame. Sometimes people need to think about the big picture. If you're going to sell your phone in a couple months and are paranoid, that's one thing, but otherwise I think they're a total waste.
I still have the factory protective plastic sheet over my screen and my stylus works fine. I'm waiting for my screen protector to come in the mail before I remove the factory plastic.
I have always used cases and screen protectors on my phones. When it came time to sell my old phones, they are still in immaculate condition, like the first day I bought them. I am always able to get the maximum resale value out of my phones.
I think screen protectors is a good investment if you want to maximize the resale value of your phone
I have a screen protector on my note and it doesn't effect the performance of the stylus. It also doesn't leave any scratches on the screen protector so I am guessing it shouldn't leave any on the screen as well.
Overall performance , it's great and loving every minute of my new toy.

If you put it on right, you can't even tell it's there. You wouldn't be able to tell that I had a screen protector on my captivate unless you looked at the edges, no fog, no bubbles, no dust.
The thing about screen protectors is... if you DO get a big scratch, you are scratching an inexpensive easily replaceable component as opposed to the expensive and very difficult to replace pane of glass fused to the LCD and housing.
Even though Screen Protectors can prevent the screen being scratched, it does also make the screen look less vibrant.
all my previous phones i had screen protector on but i decide that i go without on the note this time ^_^
ps. i just put 32gb card in and loaded ton of movies on it. oop sorry out of topic, lol
I was going to ask whether the seemingly strong screen would hurt the thin plastic S-Pen.
I never used a screen protector on previous phones, but I just ordered one for the Note. After only a couple of days use, I have several noticeable scratches on the screen - I would say that it scratches easily (these scratches are not from the stylus, haven't even used that yet).
I would think that the pen would suffer in sensitivity with a screen protector.

I ordered one of these from amazon yesterday:
Vikuiti screen protectors CV8 (quantity: 2) for Samsung Galaxy Note - PREMIUM QUALITY (ultra-clear, scratch-resistant, high adhesiveness)
Vikuiti is the strongest and best true clear screen protectors around from what I have read - I will report here when I receive my shipment.
took my note yesterday play a fruit ninja with stylus... whole screen protector get scratch..
To those who have installed a screen protector, have you guys noticed any performance loss with the stylus?

Paper's never a good thing to use for wiping clear stuff (phone screens, glasses, etc.) Wood pulp, which they use to make the paper, contains tiny bits of silica which will scratch those types of items. The scratches may be very small, but will build up over time. Fabric is always a better choice; the inside of my t-shirt is what I use most of the times on my sunglasses and phone screen.

I manufacture cases for phones.
But before then and now I don't use cases, and beat the living daylights out of my phones.
This makes me financially stupid, and you smart (no sarcasm, truly).
However, I'm perhaps living a more chilled life.
I have a screen protector currently, but I'm thinking of taking it off.
What do you guys think? Are you folks using a screen protector?
I don't use screen protector because I want the best touch experience
I never used one on my DHD and I don't use one on my Note either.
I sure use one.
Recently I had a clean slice on my screen and I was worried that the cut might be deep enough to have gone through the screen protector and scratched my screen. So I took the protector off and thankfully the screen protector was enough to stop the scratch.
So it has it uses.
Putting a screen protector is a nightmare though because of dust particles, so whenever I want to put a screen protector on I view the screen under light at an angle to see if there is any dust particles on the screen. That way I can see even the "smallest" dust particle. So whenever I place a screen protector I take about 30 to 40 mins to put one on my Note. Also it's not like I change screen protector like a baby's dippers. The current one will be on there pretty much forever unless something like a scratch happens that will force me replace it. Otherwise it's pretty much a one time thing.
My screen protectors are very good quality ones.

I am using SGP Ultra Optics, touch is fine, just finger prints are still there.
I've had my Note for over six months without a screen protector, just a gel case, and not a mark on it. Whenever it's in a pocket it never shares space with anything else that might harm it such as coins or keys.
I didn't protect my ZTE Blade before it, my MDA Vario before that, or any other phone I've owned. I don't put protectors on the display of any of my several cameras, and none of those have suffered as a result either. The only device I've ever applied a screen protector to was my Palm Tungsten T3, and with the flip cover for that, that was probably the most unnecessary application of a protector to any device I've ever owned.
Never.
Hate them.
brought my first screen protector the other day, put it on and that night i was going for a run and my note fell out of my pocket and went across the road for 5 meters, screen protector saved my phone.
I used to but I don't anymore. My note fell any the screen broke so I had to get a new one. Now I don't use a screen protector but I use seidio gel protector. I like it better like this.
Zag is the best.

Normally I kinda dislike screen protectors on touchscreens but after I got tiny scratches on my display I put a screen protector and hey, this wasn't that bad. I got used to it and now I can't imagine a screen without it.
It let me to be more careless with my Note.

I always using thin screen protectors and until now i never had any touch problems, only fingers prints and i wipe them off
If you touch to put a screen protector, choose a thin one
Bought 2x sgp ultra. Tried in vain to fit them on the phone but found it impossible to do so without getting dust trapped.
So I threw them both away, and looking back, I'm glad I did.
I just keep it in one pocket and don't put anything else in there with it.

So you are saying you never have dust or sand particles in your pockets as those bastards are the ones scratching the screens. Keys or coins won't do it as they're softer than your phone's screen.
E: I am using a cheapo screen protector (7,99€ for two) and it does not affect the user experience at all.
I dropped my note face down on the concrete twice from my jacket pocket. No scratch. I'm not using a screen protector.

I just took off my screen protector and now it feels really good.. Galaxy note's screen is one of its USP's and it needs to be felt raw not with a layer on it.
I know that the Note has a Gorilla Glass but I still use a screen protector on mine. It's probably just paranoia but hey, better be safe than sorry since at the end of the day, I did spend quite a bit on the phone

I have two small children and because of that I spend some time in sand boxes. That sand is the worst when comes to making tiny scratches. I bought a copter shield a couple of weeks after getting the note due to scratches starting to emerge. I also made a deeper scratch with the help of a zipper, (which is embarresing since im closely related to the inventor of the zipper ).
I do have the feeling that the "Note" is a bit more sensitive than other gorilla glass endowed phones. Maybe it has a coating that scratches more easily or something...
I bought s7 edge new...a few days ago...
I bought him a Screen Protector puregear, simple a bad screen protector.
And I can not find a good screen protector, In the meantime, I'm not using my s7 edge, because it.
I anyway not love screen protector, so I thought maybe... I will use my s7 edge without a screen protector
Would be very happy to hear your opinions, worthwhile or not ?
If you can elaborate This will help me, thus I will learn more.
Thanks!!!
I'm using it without one too, but I use the leather cover from Samsung(not the flip cover). Just as drop protection and because the phone is very slippery without one
I've spent more than 50$ on screen protectors still haven't find anything that last longer than a week. Somes peeled off, somes have touch issues so i decided to just use my phone naked. The phone hold up surprisingly well for the past 2 months, not any scratches even when i did drop it twice and there were some dents on the benzel.
---------- Post added at 06:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:25 PM ----------
My advice is u should definitely buy a case since the phone is pretty slippery and the benzels are so thin that u might find ur fingers resting on the screen causing touch issues.
Screen protectors are all personal preferences. From what i know, it limit the beauty of the screen, harder to see in direct sunlight, and u cant use it underwater.
Why not using it with a flip cover (but w/o screen protector)?
Best of both worlds, you can show the phone off yet it is protected all-round.

I have both. The leather one is sheer class (and better protection), the slim line one is form fitting with less protection (but still a helluvamore than not using anything).
Both make the phone look superb.
I have my s7e from since it came out, i found that my diamond bling scratches the screen when i put it on my ear so bought a screen protector but lasted 4 hours, im not fund of screen protectors i like my screen naked. Have hundreds of scratches now.
who needs a screen protector? I've never used one since like 4 years and all my phones are exposed at least to dog bites (I'm a vet and the phone is always a curious thing for them), and never broke anyone
With the s7 edge I'm using it for three months and never used one, both crystals are like new, but I'm using a spigen case because samsung's sucks
I don't use a screen protector or any protection at all, and my device (which I bought in March, shortly after its release) looks just fine. No scratches on the body, and I only have a teenie tiny scratch on the screen, which isn't bothering me. If you're the type of person who throws his stuff around, then I'd get some protection. If you're like me and you love using your devices naked, then go ahead and do that. Just DO NOT keep your phone in the same pocket with your keys etc. That will 100% scratch up your phone. Keep it generally far away from metal parts, including metallic zippers on jackets/hoodies/jeans!
I've had mine since before the official release (Tmo FTW) and I've never had a screen protector on it. I do use a Spigen black TPU case, but my screen has 0 noticeable scratches on it. You can find one or two if the screen is off and you're looking for them, but if the screen is on, you couldn't see them if you tried.
i havent had a screen protector since day one and have to scratches on mine. still looks brand new
I got a WriteRight flex screen protector (film style) from Staples in Ontario, Canada. Came with 2. First one is still on and doing well to stop simple scratches from car keys and such. It seems like there are no good options for glass protectors due to the edge. I usually would always use a glass protector + skin on body. This time i have a case that is banana-shaped to protector the screen if it falls face down and the film protector for minor scratch protection. Decent combo.
I tried multiple screen protectors and all of them were actual garbage because of the edge screen. I've been using mine without a screen protector for the last few months. It's just not worth it to me to Cripple the device and stop the enjoyment of using it because of a bad screen protector or because I'm worried about a small scratch. I've had good luck I've got a slight scratch that cannot be seen unless you're really looking for it hard after 2 months. Biggest thing is keep your keys and pens out of your pocket that your phone is in

No screen protector here. No problems ;]
Just like @ flyinj54 said, I keep my phone in my left pocket by itself. Keys and whatever else I put in my right pocket. As long as you do that and don't drop your phone you'll be good.
I tried going protector-less for a while and discovered a small scratch from somewhere. I'm very careful with my phone and hate scratches. After trying a vinyl skinomi wet install which kept on denting/imprinting, a few cheap glass ones, i've settled on the spigen plastic protector, which has been working great!
I too have spend nearly £50 on screen protectors, haven't found a good one yet, and so I now use my S7E without screen protector.
I have spend some fair amount of money on case though, I have a Noreve case, and a Piel Frama's SlimFrama case.

I did that for a while with only the Samsung Flip Wallet cover. It was fine. found Skinomi matteskin screen protector that wraps around the edges, I love it! it reduces glare and also keeps grease and fingerprints off the screen. It has almost a rubbery vinyl feel to it.

Yes i can confirm this. Even at screen off the scratches are barely visible, you can notice only if you look close to the screen. For me it really makes difference, i mean the screen is much clearer without protector because most protectors tend to absorb dirt being plastic(with all of my devices i used before never had protectors), much crispier and brighter. I dont know its just my opinion.
It's really quite simple. Unless you want hairline scratches (or worse) within a couple of weeks you use a screen protector. No matter how careful you are, this is unavoidable simply from everyday use.
Personally, I use a Zagg HD Dry. I've had the same protector on my phone since the middle of March and it still looks virtually new (bar a few inevitable marks). And with my Spigen crystal cover, it's never curled up at the edges like a lot of people have complained about.
Bottom line for me (although I accept opinions vary), buying a phone worth over £600 then not protecting it with a cover and screen protector is madness.
Hi all, I just got my first OP and at first liked the concept of the pre-installed screen protector. It's been a month and I'm hating it more and more. It should be called a link collector, because every time it's in my pocket it collects all they link. I know have squeaky clean pockets but a dirt phone. I've searched online but no one talks about removing it. I've seen posts about replacing..But why? The phone has gorilla glass 5.. My older phones had 3 and 4 with no scratches and loved. Dropped part phones with scratches or breaks. So why put one on the OP5 with the best glass on the market?
So I have 2 questions:
Any input on why the protector is on it or why others are switching to tempered glass protectors?
How do you remove the pre-installed screen protector from the current OP5 (one plus 5).
Thanks
I guess people use tempered glass because they think about reselling later on so they want to avoid any scratches. As far as I know there is no such thing as 100% scratch resistant glass, thats why they use temepred glass to increase scratch resistance.
About your second question, no idea, I am still using it with the original screen protector.
1: Because Gorilla glass 5 actually is worse then 3 and 4, also it's not only for scratches, I have little kids dropping things on my screen or hitting the screen sometimes,I just don't want to worry and you don't really notice a TGSP.
2: Just peel it off...

$h!t... Not sure if we can swear..Lol
So GG5 is worse..not what I wanted to here.my part phone had GG4 and loved it! Bought this going 5 would be even better... Do you have info on this.
As for peeling, that's what I've seen online for other phones. Do I need to use anything special after to wipe the glad clean?
So I noticed companies are already selling Screen Protectors for the Note 10+. From what I've read the Note comes with a Samsung Pre-installed one. Since I never had an S10, how is the pre-installed protector vs any of these 3rd party ones? Any reason not to use that one? I'm assuming if it gets nasty Samsung sells replacements. Also looks like the phone uses Gorilla Glass 6 vs 5 on the Note 9, so I'm guessing it should be more resistant to scratches and cracks.
scratch resistance have gotten worse over the years because corning is focusing on drop protection, and you kind of have to choose one or the other. Still think GG3 is the pinnacle of scratch resistance.
the screen protector is the same as any other plastic film one. Probably not amazing for the spen though, so maybe invest in a LOCA based glass protector. Whitestone is the easiest to install... but its pretty dang pricey. Definitely cheaper chinese options.

Very last post in this thread there is a YouTube video that shows the quality.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-10+/help/preinstalled-screen-protector-t3956714
yeah the screen protector that comes installed is trash. It doesn't even cover the entire screen
I already ordered a pair of tempered glass, saved my note 8 from several scary drops.
I ripped that screen protector off right away. It was cheap and wasn't going to save you from anything lol.
pulled it off mine to replace with a whitestone.
despite being factory it still had a fair gap around the side and it is probably about the same quality as any cheap film protector, so as far as protection is involved it will probably do for a day or 2 till you get something better but ultimately it's trash.

Same here, took it off like it was just on for shipping protect.
I don't mind the factory protector. It feels pretty slick like glass, is very oleophobic, and the SPen glides across it no problem.
That said, I've ordered Whitestone Dome and will install it as soon as it gets here. As I think it offers better protection.
If you don't want tempered glass and messy LOCA installs, or just don't want to spend the money on Whitestonez than I HIGHLY recommend the Ringke Easy Dual soft screen protector. I had it on my Note 8, Note 9, and I installed it on my wife's S10+. Perfectly clear, smooth as glass. It's so clear, it covered the front facing camera but doesn't affect the picture quality at all. Like it's not even there.
I've never found a 3rd party screen protector for a phone with a curved screen that worked well. Starting with the S7 Edge, Note 8, and Note 9. I've tried all manor of screen protectors from glass, to plastic, to that crazy nano liquid stuff. Now I've never tried a whitestone dome one before. But every previous protector I've ever tried has been junk and has fallen off, gotten dust behind it or made the s-pen horrible to use. Maybe some of the Note 10+ ones will be different but for now the one that came with it seems to be working fine.

yeah been use it all day and it still works fine, it's a bit fiddly to install as you have to basically get the glue in a target, but I got it mostly in left it to settle for 2 or 3 mins before the cure then cured it for about double what the instructions said (basically did the process twice to make sure), if anything over the course of the day using it the scanner has got better but that may just be me getting better at hitting the target.

Nope. I have zero stretches. No need to lie about this. I just use a thin case. I never put my screen against the table and never keep my phone in a pocket where there are keys in it.
It's def. Lower quality than the one that came on the s10. This already started lifting on its own. Might try the Ringke ones as I have the wet application orange peel affect, nor am I going to pay for the white Stone one because Verizons screen replacement is $29.
