[Q] GS4 problems - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

so my sister has an att galaxy s4. And she started having this problem with it only booting into download or factory mode. So after two days of struggling I finally got it to boot normally only after doing the download mode button combo, and selecting for it to cancel the boot. Then it kept on doing it after every boot so I thought i would flash the stock firmware from odin. This did not work as well and I kept getting "fail". Now I did an over the air update and as far as I can tell, it is still having the issue. Also I cannot get into recovery with the button combo to delete the cache. Thanks for the support and any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not know where to go with this.

Update: after the update it has now started to boot successfully without the extra steps, will report here again if it reoccurs.

problem still persisting
Well now the phone can boot into the normal stock Rom just fine, only after the previous method is done. Phone does not stay off after powering down and just reboots automatically into download mode. Thanks for any help guys, no idea what to do now.

Kind of sounds like some of the buttons are sticking. Maybe the power button (why it won't stay off) and/or the volume button rocker switch. You could try repeatedly pressing to clear whatever is making it stick. Also you can open the phone up and use a can of air to clean out the buttons. The only thing I can think of that may be causing this issue

First of all don't worry, it will be fine. You're going to have to grab the MJE .tar.md5 file and flash it in download mode with Odin then reroot with Kingo 1.1.6. You can get the MJE file from HERE.
Yeah. Seriously, don't worry. The, almost, exact same thing happened to me when I installed Safestrap v3.72. If you have not solved the bootloop problem yet then all you have to do is remove the battery, pop it back in and reboot into download mode by pressing the the power, volume down and home button at the same time. Simply pressing the power button after inserting the battery will just initiate the bootloop. As airmaxx23 stated above, you then have to use Odin to flash the MJE tar.md5 file.

[Q] Won't Boot

Hi, everyone! I in need of some dire help right now. My S4 (Jfltemo) running Mahdi Rom 2.7 Won't boot. Now I flashed the phone several times before: Paranoid Android, Cyanognenmod, Android Open Kang Project, and Stock. I tried Mahdi Rom last Night since it was new and since it was stable. I clicked on the Reboot option on the Power menu after flashing it because i was going to go into recovery mode. Now my phone won't even boot fully. It goes to the Samsung Galaxy Splash Screen then quickly boots off. I changed the battery to my other to see if it was a power problem but instead the phone tries to turn itself on when plugging in a battery. I tried putting it in download mode but it turns off within a few seconds of entering download mode. I cannot enter recovery because it turns off soon after.
I'm kinda screwed here. Help?
Much appreciated. Fast Help Appreciated
Your power button is probably faulty. Either you have to replace it or try to fix it somehow.

Its not that. I was able to boot into Download mode without problems after leaving my phone alone for a few hours. But now its the same thing again. I know its not the power button because i was able to boot before without no problems. Has anyone had this problem before?

[Q] AT&T S4 won't boot

I've been searching everywhere for a solution, but nothing has come up. I own a AT&T galaxy S4 that was on NC1 and today, I noticed that it wasn't in sleep mode even though I had not turned it off. I held the power button down and it presented me with the Samsung Custom boot screen with the unlocked lock. After that, nothing. The phone just turned off again. I went to try and flash the NB1 stock ROM through odin. It booted up fine the first time. I was setting it up and while I was doing so, it shut off. I pressed the power button to power it on, this time I get the normal samsung boot logo, and once again, nothing afterwards. I tried reflashing through odin and trying to access recovery mode to wipe the cache and factory reset. I ran odin and when I tried to enter recovery mode (it showed entering recovery mode in the top left corner of the menu), it shut off again. Does anyone know what I can do to resolve this? I would really hate to have to get another phone as I am currently under contract for another 8 months. Thanks in advance for anyone that helps!

I'm guessing it's a hardware failure.

I couldn't believe how simple the solution was. I figured out my battery had simply ran out and a charge got it right back up. Thanks for the response!

[Q] Back and Multitasking buttons stopped working

I was uninstalling some apps to get ready to back up and flash my phone because my microphone volume was stuck at minimum and no one could hear me. After rebooting my back and multitask (menu) button won't light up or respond. This has happened to me before occasionally. I could fix it by powering the screen off and back on. I believe I read somewhere it had something to do with xposed.
I tried flashing using MOP and my buttons didn't come back so I loaded a TWRP, wiped all partitions, rebooted in download mode and flashed with regular ODIN. Still can't get the buttons to function. Home button works just fine, though.
I tried finding a solution to this but I can't seem to find one. I had the same issue intermittently on my Galaxy S4 but I fixed it by wiping the partitions and reflashing. G900R4 USC variant.
So I went into stock recovery and did a factory reset. It was already as wiped as it could possibly get afaik but I thought I'd try just to see. My buttons lit up in stock recovery so I knew they were getting power. I did a factory reset and low and behold upon reboot my buttons came back.
Did I fix it or is there a circuit starting to fail on my phone and it was just luck? I'm curious.

S4 Stuck on logo screen and restarts itself? Can only boot into Download mode.

So, yesterday my father said his S4 had just shut itself down and that now it only reboots itself and he can't boot the phone.
He asked me to see if I can get it working again and if not try to get the internal data of it, and we tried all evening to see if I could get it working with no success, we tried everything from changing to his second battery and I can't remember what made it work, but all of a sudden it was alive again and it worked for about 3 mins before restarting itself over and over again.
So now he has a phone that is stuck on the first logo screen (The screen that says "Samsung Galaxy S4") and I've tried to flash TWRP to see if I could get MTP to work for moving the files from the /data partition to my PC with no sucess.
He had decided to use his phone for a few more months before he would get a new phone but because of this he have now bought a S8.
So I want some help to see if anyone knows how I can get the files from the hard-bricked phone.
The phone was and is on stock Lollipop 5.0.1 and he hasn't touched the system in anyway until I tried to flash TWRP which did pass in Odin but it got stuck on the "Booting Recovery" until it restarted itself again. The weird thing is that the phone stays on in Download mode and doesn't restart itself there which leads me to think there isn't any hardware error.
Any help is much appreciated!
Just tried to reflash the system, got a little further but then it got into the same problem. It boots which is good, but after a a few seconds it restarts itself, I will attempt to move the files in this short period. But if anyone got a better idea, please tell me.
*Edit: It restarts way too often, sometimes (About 1/10 times) it manages to boot into the OS but then almost immediatly restarts. I've read that it might be the power button that has some dust inside it or something. Seems like after all it must be the hardware? But the weird thing is that it still can stay on inside the download mode, and when I'm holding the button there it shuts down, but not automaticly. I can get into the stock recovery but installing TWRP doesn't work.
If you tried installing TWRP 3.2.0-0 it has an issue with the S4. Use 3.1.1-0 or 3.1.1-1 instead. From there, you should be able to get the data off the internal storage. Once you do, give the side with the power button a firm whack on a table. If there's any grit in the power button, that may loosen it and restore the button to operating condition. Of course, you could get a replacement button but it may not be worth it despite the button being inexpensive and relatively easy to replace.

Not sure how I feel about whacking the phone (Even if it's firmly) on a table. But yes, I tried TWRP 3.2.0-0 so I'll try 3.1.1-1 later today. Thank you for the tip!
Well, I'm not saying you should bash it hard enough to break the phone, but it can't be a light tap either.
I didn't originally come up with the idea. I just promote it as a quick fix. A more permanent solution is to replace the button.
