[GUIDE] Root without flashing custom recovery - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With Lollipop just around the corner, I'm guessing some will be reverting back to stock to get the OTA update. This is for those guys that still want root and be able to get the OTA and have it actually work. Installing SuperSU from the Play Store doesn't work if you haven't rooted your device already.
I'm not going to get into specifics about unlocking your bootloader, going back to stock, adb and drivers. All of these should be done if you reverted back to stock.
Go ahead and download the latest SuperSU here from your tablet.
Download a custom recovery on your computer. I used TWRP 2.7.1.1. Place the .img you downloaded in your adb folder (\android-sdk). You can rename if you want. For sake of this guide, let's say I renamed it twrp.
Reboot into bootloader. To make sure everything is connected, why not run:
fastboot devices
Then run (if everything is connected of course):
fastboot boot twrp.img
Let it do its thing. Sooner or later you'll have TWRP pop-up on your tablet.
*Note: You're simply downloading and booting from the image on your computer. This isn't flashing the recovery on your tablet.
Make sure it mounted (I had no problems) and flash SuperSU like you would anything else in recovery.
This worked for me. Right before this, I reverted back to stock using comminus' guide, left my tablet unlocked, booted, checked USB Debugging and Unknown Sources (not sure if this matters) and did this method and I have root.
Hope this helps. :good:
And just because it's cute and funny...:victory:

[Q] Problem with Unrevoked

Hi all
I have used unrevoked tool about half a year ago,with almost no problems.The only problem I am (still) facing is the off mode charging one.I lived happily with it for some months but now i want to flash a new recovery image to fix the off mode charging thing.I download the image,and use unrevoked to flash it.The problem is it fails at "waiting for root, firmware too new?" eaven though the phone is allready rooted and running cyanogenmod 7.How can I flash a new recovery?
tnx in advance
Well, 3xeno helped me when I had this problem, so I will quote him:
1.) Install Android SDK, and use the Fastboot option.
2.) Get the Recovery.IMG file of the Clockworkmod version you want to flash.
3.) Place this in the SDK's Tools folder.
4.) Reboot your phone in the bootloader mode.
5.) Enter Fastboot mode (Press Power button on Fastboot).
6.) Open Command Prompt on Windows.
7.) cd (browse) to the SDK's tools folder.
8.) Type the following command: "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img". (Without quotes.)
Done.

Hit thanks if I helped you.
You will need S-OFF by AlphaRev X to use the guide above posted. Else, it wont work. Also, you might want to use an older version of Unrevoked, if you are not interested in getting S-OFF at the moment.
Unrevoked 3.14 is said to work pretty well. Just search around in the forum a bit, many members have uploaded it to various file hosts.
Thank you both!
Unrevoked v3.14 worked like a charm

[Q] after wipe system can't push new rom

and afterwards have tried to use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667929
but received these messages (the first is while on recovery, the second is after pressing on adb sideload in the recovery
right now only the data partition is mounted but i am not sure whether it's suppose to be like this, and i still don't have zip inside my phone.
the recovery is team win recovery project v2.6.2.0
please help as i am getting crazy. i wouldn't mind using the toolkit if i knew which option to chose.
thank you
Hi, to install a 4.4+ rom you need to update your recovery to 2.6.3.3 and then try sideload again.
P.s you wiped the user data partition.
well i was already noted it is something like this but i also cannot install the PA RC2 via the adb sideload.
is there a previous version available, as i didn't find any?
and how can update the recovery in such a state?
Download the recovery img not zip!
Copy the img to adb folder boot to bootloader , open cmd and type: fastboot flash recovery file_name.img .

Thanks it worked! I installed the factory img of kitkat I'll try installing vanir later!

Update to Nougat with Flashfire

Hey all - I downloaded the factory image for the release version of Nougat from here. I went to try flashing it using flashfire as usual, but the partition listing is a bit different than before. Instead of /system /boot /user etc. I see this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
So has anyone else been able to do flash this update through flashfire? How did you do it exactly?
Thanks.
anyone else? i would also like to know
Where is that linked file from? Google hasn't released 7.0 images yet...

It was posted on Android Police.
This is not a factory image but an OTA package.
And an OTA from DP5 not from MM stock
DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any lost data or damage to your device should you choose to follow my advice. Just because it worked for me, is no guarantee that it will work perfectly for you too. Proceed at your own risk.
Sign up for the Beta program at http://g.co/androidbeta and within a few minutes you should get a notification on your phone to download the ota to Official 7.0. Download this, but do not install it. After download, open Flashfire back up and it should automatically see the system OTA and prompt you to flash it. Doesn't matter whether or not you tell it to inject root, as this will not work. After the whole process completes and you are on the official Android 7 build, you can boot CF-Auto-Root using fastboot from your computer to get systemless root. Also, I expect within a few days someone will have full system root and various custom ROMs will be updated to Android 7.

Revert Asus Zenfone 3 Max ZC520TL to previous firmware

I would like to revert the firmware on an Asus Zenfone 3 Max (ZC520TL) to a previous one (13.1.4.43).
With the current firmware (13.1.4.69) I have PIN and fingerprint issues.
-I tried to go back to 13.1.4.43 using Asus Flash Tool but it does not allow going back.
-I tried to go back thru the Recovery but I got a security error …does not allow to go back
-I try using ADB but it does not show when sending command "adb devices" even though I installed drivers (ADB, MPT, etc.) and it does shows in the Control Panel when the phone is ON.
Also sent the command "adb reboot bootloader" the phone reboots into bootloader/fastboot mode but still does not allow to go back to previews firmware.

What exactly is the security error you get when you try to flash that firmware in recovery? You tried flashing this file (US version) from the Asus website through stock recovery? You should be able to do it through recovery, but you may need to edit the updater-script file as mentioned here in part 1, steps 2-4.
EDIT: Looks like you won't be able to use fastboot to flash images unless your bootloader is unlocked. Is yours?

How to install XIAOMI OTG updates on this phone using UNOFFICIAL TWRP (lavender)?

I just got this phone, and am enjoying it.
I installed the unofficial TWRP from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3921637 . I just got a new "OTG" update for this phone that I want to install.
However, I just learned that you can't install OTG updates normally with TWRP installed as a custom recovery. I also have Magisk (systemless root) installed.
I still want TWRP installed for the benefits, but I also want the improvements from the official OFG updates. I am also aware that OTG erases root with each update.
Does anyone know how to install this latest update (without losing all my data)? Is there a custom file/build I can flash that will update my system but not wipe everything?
It shouldn't be any rush but I don't want to be running behind on all the important updates coming to this phone either.
Thanks.
(UPDATE; Deleting the compatibility.zip file inside the latest OTG update rom .zip file from here: https://www.fonearena.com/blog/279737/xiaomi-redmi-note-7-software-update-tracker.html , made the installation suddenly work! Yay! I also installed Magisk.zip again, because I probably would need to anyways. Should be easy from now on!)
Hopefully this will help someone else!
(Looks like my issue is similar to this recent post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...overy-unofficial-twrp-touch-recovery-t3921637 . Not quite sure if I understand the directions completely however... hmmm...)
If there is a ota just download the full Rom. Works with twrp..
After Update install magisk again.. And voila. [emoji6]

Better you use orangeFox recovery, theres no Chance to overwrite with original recovery on Update.
