Last night my Nexus crashed. It was running Dirty Unicorns v8.1 and everything froze after a few apps updated from the store. Upon reboot the Nexus kept freezing up during the boot logo animation.
I tried to enter recovery but the system would never get past the Teamwin boot screen logo. The I used the Nexus toolkit to try and restore the tablet to stock but it wouldn't work no matter what I tried. Even trying to boot to a temporary recovery just hanged at the Teamwin logo.
Now I've got to the point where I turn on the tablet and I get the Google logo with the unlocked padlock. I also have on the same screen the option to boot into recovery, power off, start or restart the bootloader.
Using the toolkit to restore sock gets as far as this,
sending 'bootloader' (2100 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.296s]

Then the device enters APX mode as windows tries to download APX drivers. I even tried the Linux toolkit but this worked less. Just trying all my options!
Is my Nexus 7 finally dead?
Thanks for any help.
You can try the factory images.
The toolkit can't write to the bootloader so I can't flash anything. I can lock the boot loader and then recovery works. But now if I unlock the boot loader it boots into APX mode.
I'm going to pull the battery. Probably pointless but I guess it's dead already and I'm pulling at straws now. [emoji17]

Try installing a Factory image thru FASTBOOT. using Android ADB..
Search for how to restore Nexus 7 using Fastboot.. It could be usb cable or usb driver issue .
Thanks for the suggestion but I think its dead. I can't fastboot a factory image because the bootloader is locked and no matter what I try I can't unlock it.
Can you see it in fast boot?
Fastboot device?
You can unlock it by
Fastboot oem unlock
Then flash the stock factory image directly.
You can find the images on google Dev.

There should be an option on fastboot to go to bootloader and then from there recovery should be available, is that option available to you?
yes but recovery won't boot, sits at mt4g boot screen or sits at 3 skaters in center screen, depending on how I access it (ie go to fastboot then back again)
Power down your phone, hold volume down and the power button. That will take you into the hboot screen. You can then select to go into recovery from there.
thats what I have tried, it goes to three skaters center screen does nothing
I have tried flashing recovery from fastboot
tried hboot from fastboot
tried radio from fastboot
NOTHING flashes trust me I have been androiding for a while now never had I had a problem like this.

Is three skaters your boot animation or splash screen? Not sure what that is referring to.
the three skaters is the image at bottom of hboot screen, when i select recovery they go to center screen and nothing happens

got recovery to boot but get
e:can't mount /cache/recovery/command
etc

Edit: nvm. Is doing RUU better option than loading PD15IMG.ZIP on sdcard and doing it that way?

Sounds like you maybe victim of fail-pu. But if thats not the case and you don't care about your "/data" and just want working phone again then I suggest from fastboot you do "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" which will replace the current recovery.img and flash it to mmcblk0p21. Once thats done do "fastboot erase system -w" and it will nuke everything so /system, /data, ect will all be erased. After that you can enter recovery by selecting it from hboot and then do factory wipe and flash another rom.
Keep in mind you will run in to errors in recovery after -w as its normal but depending on the fail-pu if you do get the failed partition update flag you can't make any changes as the errors will stick because you can't format the drives. Also the new recovery.img for CWMR can be found in dev section if not post here and ill send you.
I don't care at all about the data (I am well backed up) but I can't flash a recovery I have tried through fastboot, I agree the partition is F_D but I will try the erase system -w and see if that lets me do anything
thanks

Exactly what I got too, seems we have bricked our phones. Wish I had a way of making the phone unable to boot to recovery or at all.

I dont get how a phone can run for weeks since its last flash and have this happen, I made no changes updates etc just running as normal.
Is there a way to wipe evidence of cm of so I can get this phone repaired? To me this obviously a faulty emmc, I just can't see it being anything else.
or is it possible to boot recovery on sd like the nook?
any ideas on how to wipe cm bits atleast?
I was working on an interesting app on my N7 (grouper). I left it on for about a week after the week I found the N7 stuck in a boot loop. I can get it into the boot loader and can do fastboot things but I can't flash a recovery or rom.
I get this error when I try.

I was able to get to the recovery splash screen if I booted recovery (no flash) but thats it.
Trying to start from the bootloader gives me a "Booting failed" error.
My guess is I managed to cook the flash so no more writing or reading is possible. What say you fine fellows have I made it into masonry?
Can you boot into stock recovery. If yes try factory reset otherwise
Try the wugs toolkit
It has options to restore your phone
Nexus 7 (grouper) doesn't boot - Bootloader says "FAILED (remote: (FileWriteFailed))"
Hi,
My Nexus 7 (grouper) won't boot Android anymore. It automatically boots into the bootloader and when I select 'Start' or 'Recovery Mode' it just says "Booting failed".
When I try to flash a new recovery Image over fastboot I get the following Output:
[[email protected] Downloads]$ sudo fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.0-grouper.img

It's the same, when I try to flash anything else. So I have no chance to flash a Stock-Image. I also get the same error when I try to format a partition. I'm pretty much out of ideas now. Can anybdoy help me?
yeah this same thing kept happening to me (I have no idea why) Once you get into the bootloader make sure your device shows up IE fastboot devices, then flash bootloader, then fastboot reboot-bootloader then between each succeding flash use the volume buttons to select reboot bootloader on the device. I had to flash individual partitions it would'nt do a -w update, so flash system, then reboot bootloader on device, then flash, then reboot bootloader, ect
Also booting into Android takes a bit so be patient, like 10/15 min. Maybe there's an easier way but after screwng around with it for an hour this is the only way I could get 5.1.1 on it.

Something seems to be really screwed up with my storage. Is there a way to repartition the device from fastboot? Maybe that would be help.
I'm willing to try out everything, by now.
Is it possible the files your trying to flash are somehow corrupt? try downloading again. My problem was fastboot kept crashing, not really sure what you got going on.
I will say that i've just finished flashing nexus 6,7,7, and 9 and for some reason the nexus 7 (2012) was a real pain in the butt, didn't have issues with any of the others.
Maybe someone else with another idea will chime in, good luck!

I already downloaded them multiple times. And even if they are corrupt, formatting the partitions should still work. I'm guessing on corrupt storage now, as I can't find any other explanation. Maybe I can find a cheap Motherboard somewhere on the internet. Thanks, anyways
So i got a friends phone digitizer and screen is broken. USB Debugging is off. Developer is off. Locked. I tried otg (does not work).
All i got is fastboot.
Can i boot temporarily in into recovery? something like fastboot boot /tmp/cwm.zip ?
i tired
Code:
G:\ANDROID\sdk>fastboot.exe boot twrpph2n.img
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY

im guessing because the phone is locked.
Hi All,
I just followed the instructions to root my h918 and then successfully updated to h91820h. I then used the TWRP app to flash twrp, and the Magisk app to update Magisk. After that I rebooted from the Magisk app, and now my phone is stuck in a bootloop. I cannot get into download mode, or recovery mode, or the system. I can get into fastboot mode by trying to go into download mode (holding the volume down and plugginto a USB port ot the laptop.
It seems that T-mobile removed any commands from fastboot that will help me. If I try to "fastboot reboot emergency", it just bootloops. If I try fastboot boot a twrp image, I get:
Code:
fastboot boot twrp-3.4.0-1-h918.img
downloading 'boot.img'...
OKAY [ 0.667s]
booting...
FAILED (remote: unknown command)
finished. total time: 0.686s
The command "fastboot reboot bootloader" boots to fastboot. The bootloader is indeed unlocked, but it looks like I'm stuck, because the LG fastboot doesn't allow anything to fix the brick.
Code:
$ fastboot getvar unlocked
unlocked: yes
finished. total time: 0.020s
I'm not finding any hope or help on Google. It seems if I can't boot into twrp or download mode, I'm toast, and I can't figure out how to boot into anything but the bootloader.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to bring this phone back from the dead?
Thanks,
Rob

How are you trying to boot into download mode, are you trying to do it via fastboot or the hardware buttons?

im having the same problem, i dont have download more or twrp now, all i have is fastboot
i am going to assume going into download mode through fastboot is the only option for the two people posting for help here. from what i see from the posts, both hardware buttons sequence , or the plug in & down volume are the ONLY way to get to fast boot.
and fast boot is the only thing available on the phone.
i have labeled that a soft brick .
i asume one of the two help seekers have used the magisk 20.2 trap?
the release proved to be a problem , there is a tutorial on how to fix it.
i will go look for that and try to edit it into my responce later.
for now, are the two seekers already acomplished in this procedure?

ok i found a way to get into twrp (if ever installed)
1- turn off your phone
2- hold Volume Down + Power button until you see the LG logo
3- When you see the Logo release the power button while still holding the volume down and immediately after release press power button 3 times.
4- you will see a factory reset screen, press yes twice and it will go to twrp.
NOW WE NEED TO FIND A WAY TO FLASH A WORKING ROM THRU TWRP
