My note3 is awesome but the gps is a POS can anyone coming from the note3 to note4 for tell me if the gps function has been improved? Or is it just as unreliable(not locking on satellites) if its any better its worth the upgrade to me.....
I agree that it's worser than the one on my old note 1
If you can send me your gps.conf file I can fix it for you. Have to be rooted and it's in system/etc/gps.conf. Fix would work on any note 3.

I stopped rooting my phones because its just to much to maintain and keep up with these days. Initially my main reason for rooting was tethering but since i switched to tmobile and they give me 3 gigs for free. i found no reason to have to do it anymore.. i was always cool with the touch wiz roms anyway.. thank u for the offer though... can anyone else chime in on the difference if any in gps reliability between note 3 and note 4?
GPS receiver is quite deaf, horrible reception.
I just started noticing this weekend that my phone would find a lock no problem at first but can't maintain that lock. The GPS icon would disappear and then restart again after a few seconds to try and find a lock. Would happen every few minutes or so.
Yeah, I'm having an issue too.
It doesn't follow me, but it can pinpoint my location. It also jumps around to different locations around me when I'm driving.
Get this software and set it to auto update A-gps data. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
I've been doing this since Note 2 and never had to wait more than 3-5 seconds to get full lock. It will entirely solve all your problems, and you don't have to root.

I'll give it a try, thanks ozaghloul.
I can confirm 100% issues with GPS on my AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4. I bought it Sunday (12/28/2014) and noticed instant GPS inaccuracies, teleporting, not updating correct route information, etc. I got home, OTA'd, tried again the next day, same issues. Took it into AT&T yesterday (12/30/2014), guy instantly swapped, I stood right there and showed him exactly what was happening on the brand new, fresh out the box phone. "Hmmm, I'd give it a couple of days to.....uhhh.....calibrate, then bring it back if it doesn't work." Screw that, wtf is going on? Why do a select few of us have the problem and why does it continue to happen to the same people?
In another forum, a guy took his back not 1, not 2 but 3 TIMES, same gps issues everytime......... Add me to the list of people who've had multiple phones and the same gps issues. SIM related????? Maybe? I can't have another phone, I absolutely love this thing.
**EDIT** Had a Note 2 for close to 3 years, not one GPS problem.
switch mode to gps only. in high accuracy mode it downloads google wifi data and tries to avoid using the gps chip so you bounce around depending on how accurate googles wifi mapping is based on APs googles streetview van saw.
GPS only mode with daily AGPS data will be the best.
I've done everything under the sun. Nothing helps.
I will try zurkx's info tonight and try to remember to turn it on for the foreseeable future and see what happens. The issue is sporadic for me and I don't have it on while I'm driving all the time.

I fear it's a bit different: Just a few people get aware of the problem, many others simply don't notice or don't want to notice it.
Just have a look at my thread - pretty detailled: http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/gps-close-to-unusable-t2948602
Try rebooting in airplane, it seems to have alleviated the issues. Now I have a horrible download speed problem....

My GPS hasn't been working for a while now, and I always assumed it was a 1software issue. I've tried SBFing to .340, .602, CM7, and am currently on MIUI.. all with no luck. Long story short, it was a hardware issue.
I noticed while holding the phone in a certain way with the battery cover off, I would get a fix on all satellites almost instantly (using GPS Status). After some testing, I found that putting pressure on the piece of plastic between the battery pull tab and SD card was the solution.
With a little MacGyver ingenuity (folded a movie stub in half, placed on that spot, and put the cover back on), I now have perfect GPS reception, indoors and out.
I'm not sure if this is the issue for everyone with a Droid X and GPS problems, but it should at the very least help some.
Please take the poll and spread the word if this is a solution for you. I know I'm not the only one who has thought about tossing my phone out the window over this issue.
It works!
Wow. Just wow.
I have been having GPS problems on my Droid X for months now. I had tried almost everything: Formatting SD card, downloading AGPS data, wiping cache, factory reset, different ROMs, etc.
NOTHING WORKED
I was about to give up, but today I had some free time before work so I thought I would give it another, final, shot. I Googled the problem for the umpteenth time and found your post. "Interesting," I thought to myself, "I've never thought of trying that."
So I popped off my batter cover and with the GPS test app running applied a small amount of pressure on the little plastic peg located below the pull tab.
INSTANTLY GPS test picked up seven different satellites! I jumped out of my chair I was so excited! I instantly decided to create an XDA account (I've been a lurker for about a year now) just so that I could thank you! I loved using my GPS so much because I am horrible when driving in places that I'm not familiar with, it was such a downer to not be able to use it, I felt like my phone was only at 75% without it.
But you changed all of that!
I love you!
I want to hug you!
+1000 Internets/cookies/kudos to you, good sir!
May you have the best Karma for the rest of your life!
Sincerely,
An extremely happy, GPS renewed, Droid X user
interesting. I usually find that GPS problems are rom related 9 out of 10 times.
I like my GPS too I've always known my network and GPS issues to be rom related. I'll have to see how that works next time. Thanks for sharing your discovery.

I didn't believe it at first... but he's right!
I had my doubts when I read about the "pressure fix" to my DX GPS problem. I did a lot of testing and it works. I was able to get 8-9 satellite fixes in 4-8 seconds. As soon as I let off on the pressure all satellites were lost usually right away but sometimes I had the fix for 15-20 seconds. When I put the battery cover on I also lost satellites right away. I found I could also apply pressure through the battery cover and get a fix within 10 seconds.
I called VZW tech support and after I convinced the first tier script reader that I indeed had a problem that they couldn't fix I went to tier two. He asked a few questions and I told him my woes (but not the pressure fix) and he immediately sent out a replacement phone. The replacement works great... fixes in seconds even inside a steel hulled ferry boat!
Something else you can try is updating your roaming capabilities. dial *228 and press 2. Seemed to help a lot with me. Getting several satellites within 5-10 seconds, vs. 20 minutes before lol
If you are having the gps issue on all roms and pressure makes it work, it's more than likely a cold solder joint an I would get the phone replaced under warranty.
bizarre
I just wanted to say I have this same problem on the same phone. I noticed if I touch the back of my phone in a certain area, the GPS lights up and everything works great. If I take my finger off it, the GPS loses me. It is just bizarre... I am calling them tomorrow for a replacement phone but I wanted to say thanks for posting this because I thought I was going nuts!
edit: I cut off a strip of a thin cardboard price tag from a pair of jeans I bought a few weeks ago and inserted it into the back of the phone like the OP stated, closed the battery case, and now I have eleven satellites. If I take out the piece of cardboard they all go away. I had been looking for a solution for weeks and now, finally, joy!
Yeah I knew that issue for awhile. Atleast 7 or 8 months. It will help with wifi issues too. I remember at one point my friend was going threw droid x's like there nothing. There has to be something loose up there. I wanted to open it up and try to find a real fix but just never cared. I figured if i lose wifi or need gps i know the quick fix.
Thank you!!!
I started having gps issues right around the time I started rooting and roming so I assumed it was the roms. I tried flashing the fixes but nothing worked. I even temporarily went back to stock but it didn't fix the gps problem. I found this today and immediately fixed the problem. I used my gps the whole day and haven't had a problem. If something changes I will be sure to come back and let all of you know.
You know... it might be caused by doing multiple battery pulls which is something you tend to do a lot when first learning to rom your phone.
Me too
My wife and I both have DroidX original flavour, and both have had the GPS stop working after about a year. To call it annoying would be an understatement. Both phones are unrooted, have the latest update on them (4.5.621.MB810).
Our symptoms were they same - you start up GPS and start Navigator or Google Maps, and for the first two minutes, everything was fine. And then the GPS looses the signal and there is nothing you can do to bring it back.
I had read on another board that Weatherbug caused a lot of problems with the GPS, and after uninstalling that (and installing Weather.com's app), the GPS actually did start working better, but it would still loose the signal permanently most of the time.
I actually went through uninstalling everything else on my phone trying to figure out which of the 100 apps I have installed that had messed up the GPS, and still had no signal. And then I read this post.
I'm going to add another variable to this fix, and that would be heat. Taking off the batter cover works for me, but I have also noticed that on hot, sunny days, when the phone is in the car dock, there is almost nothing I can do to get the GPS to work. But at night, when the phone is cool, even without taking the cover off and applying pressure to the knob next to the pull tab, the GPS seems to work almost flawlessly.
I'm going to call Verizon tomorrow to see if I can get replacements for both my wife's and mine phone. I don't know if they will, considering my wife's phone is almost two years old, but we can't wait until July when her replacement discount becomes available for her to have a usable GPS. Considering this seems to be a design flaw in the original DroidX given the sheer number of postings all of the internet describing the exact same problem, I'm thinking they had better replace them for free.
Thank you for this post!! You've solved a problem that has been bugging us for months, and now that I know its an endemic problem, you probably saved us a LOT of money!
I know this is an old post, but I am looking for any suggestions to get my GPS working again. I have tried with the cover pulled and applying pressure to the plastic piece and have had no luck, I get no satellites. I have updated roaming capabilities, I have changes ROMS, still to no avail. I have used GPS Status to reset and download A-GPS state and it will not work. The GPS never finds any satellites indoors or out. I have tried flashing a baseband radio and had no luck doing that either.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Hi Everyone,
I've seen three Note 3 on 4.4.2 and they ALL experience GPS resets and different times of the day. Unfortunately I do not have a Note 3 still on 4.3 and courtesy of Samsung I cannot downgrade. A number of users report that the issue was introduced on the N9005 with version 4.4.2.
I'm going to buy another Note 3 and NOT upgrade if this fixes the issue but I'd like to know whether anyone is using their GPS on the N9005 EXTENSIVELY, during the whole day and is not experiencing ANY odd GPS resets, GPS fix lost or other GPS related issues.
I don't want to know about the time it takes to get a fix or the quality of the signal. ALL of the phones I got to look at lost ALL satellites in places where there was NO reason to lose the fix, i.e. out in the open with clear view of the sky and ALL of them did so repeatedly.
If a new phone will fix the issue but I don't want to end up with another dud which I will then have to return. Because the issue is intermittent and somehow related to the time of day AND can only be reproduced outdoors this would be one painful exercise.
So if you do use GPS regularly to navigate etc please let me know how yours works and version of OS you're on.
TIA
I use mine about 6-8 hours a day.
Mainly to keep track of where the train I am on currently is and for navigating streets. And to map out and follow a route when I'm doing an urban or landscape shoot. (Photography).
I've never had issues with my N9005 DBT 4.4.2 NB7, nor on any of the previous versions. It's always accurate and always constant. (Except when I'm in a tunnel or on the tube. But that's physics 101.)
It has never lost all satellites, nor has it ever lost the connection without a perfectly valid reason.
I've done a factory reset and my GPS still takes over 10 minutes to find my location....... If it finds it at all.

I agree with this post, never once had a problem.
I use mine for about 2 hours maximum everyday (so i can avoid traffic) mounted on my motorbike whilst riding to and from work, with a bluetooth headset in my helmet.
I am running a deodexed version of ND3

May I ask how u experience the problem maybe I just don't get it. Is the GPS not working at all while maps or any GPS based app is running? Or does the phone tell u that GPS is not working? I'm on 4.4.2 without any issues of GPS

Sure, my GPS is usually fine. Locks quickly and reception is OK. Obviously I lose signal in tunnels and in the CBD sometimes so this is not about that.
I could be in the middle of nowhere with nothing blocking my sight although it's obviously most annoying while driving. I lost the signal when I should not. It usually looks just like the GPS resets or so, without moving much at all the signal will drop from 20 satellites down to four then none within 2 or 3 seconds. Then it slowly comes back, gets a lock and works fine again. The lock could then last for a minute or two and then it just happens again. This seems to mostly happen in the afternoon to early evening.....don ask why :-|
I've tried just about everything. Initially I thought it was a hardware defect but my wife's Note 3 does exactly the same thing......what are the odds of having two Note 3 (bought different places about 2 weeks apart) the exact same problem? I had a quick look at a third one (not one of ours so I didn't get to spend much time with it) but it seemed to do the same thing as well, i.e. lost the signal while standing still with no buildings (and mountains etc) around me.

I don't know about the rom since I didn't try it but in the quote of the link is how he fixed the GPS issue. Seems like it is a software problem. If your phones are rooted try the method described in the quote if not try reset with backup via Google. Good luck.

Same here. I just don't get the part where it's always fine in the morning, then **** in the afternoon and perfect again in the evening.
So I have done some research about this issue already and there doesn't seem to be a definite answer around so maybe this thread can clear things up for me. Anyways I have a Note 4 on T-Mobile, and I use Waze, a lot, and I rarely ever get a GPS lock, it usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes before I get one and then when I do, it will skip around or my location will "teleport". So people have said to use the app "TopNTP" and this seems to help slightly, but it still takes forever to lock. I have used multiple GPS reconfiguration apps and this seems to be the only one that helps slightly. I have also done the usual, factory reset, reset app settings, root, unroot, custom and stock rom, and nothing seems to work. I also know that its not just my location because I used to have an HTC One M8 that worked flawlessly, and to top it off, a friend of mine has a Note 4 with the same issue. I would just like to know if this is happening to other people and if there is a way to fix it. Another thing I saw floating around the internet was some guy put a piece of copper tape inside the back cover of his and it seemed to give him a stronger signal. I don't know if this is a cruel joke or not but I am honestly probably going to go to home depot and try this because I just don't know what else I could possibly try besides getting a new phone, so any help is appreciated.

I have the same issue. In doing some research there are A LOT of others in the same boat. I had GPS issues with my Note 3 and now the NOTE 4 is a POS as well. I am probably going to get another (NOT SAMSUNG) device and return this as defective and sell the replacement.
Sorry to hear about your problem. I have a Note 4 N910F international. I have been using navigation driving around texas for a few days now without problem. It locks immediately when I enable gps. Have you tried turning on mobile data or wifi if you are in range? This will help with quicker position acquisition.
My problem with Note 4 is poor LTE receprion eventhough my 2 S4' s get full bars.
Wondering if anyone is having the same frustrating experience as me in terms of GPS locking on when first opening Maps or Waze. It seems like it's taking 2-3 minutes for Maps or Waze to actually figure out exactly where I am and properly display a route. I realize this was sort of normal years ago but not anymore. Before it locks on correctly, the route is created but a message about no GPS appears on the top of the app and I'm stuck not having directions. This was not an issue on my 5T. I'm on OOS 9.0.12 rooted. This has been the same on every version of OOS since I got the phone, even stock TMO ROM before I switched over.
Any ideas?
I use maps a lot for daily commute. For me the map gets GPS lock nearly instantly. I live in the Midwest so terrain is not a factor, and my home and work locations are not impacted by tall buildings, so I have a very easy case.
Have you tried some other apps that check number of satellites your GPS is locked to?
It's possible it is a hardware problem too.

I haven't tried any GPS specific apps other than the navigation apps. I used to use those years ago but not recently. It happens in various places. I live in NH so I could be in the city for a bit and then out in the middle of nowhere with not much around later on. Seems like it happens no matter where I am. I'll get an GPS app and see whats going on with the satellites though, thanks!
Having the same issue since monday after installing latest update update to my OP6T. Can't use any navigation app....
Since I've gotten the phone, I've had issues with the GPS. Gps aiming me in the wrong direction, telling me that I'm on the perpendicular roads and all kinds of crap. Sometimes I'm on the highway and it'll think I got off at an exit. But I didn't! So now it's rerouting me then it realizes that I'm actually on the correct road. So it reroutes me again. All while I'm traveling 60, and every precious second counts.
How can I get the calibration screen back?
To me this sounds like an intermittent fault with the GPS. Hardware problem.
First thing I do as soon as I get any GPS problems with an Android:
I install GPS Status from the playstore : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
Just start the app, then use your GPS and often the problem is gone. It's worth a try!

Hey, thanks for this. Even inside a building this works pretty well. It's awful that we need another app to do what the phone should do on its own, but at least it works.

Sometimes it's not necessary to use GPS-Status all the time. You can try to delete the app maybe your problem is still gone. Anyway, nice to know that you are able to use your GPS again!
There is a problem with the 6T Gps for sure. I tested two Oneplus 6T devices. Both work 100% . Gps is very nice most of the time. If I am on call I loose Gps lock and I need to terminate the call to get Gps location back. It's not app specific as it happens in all gps apps. Even gps status looses lock. It happens always in the same place. Unfortunately it's near my home. I have no idea how to solve the problem. I tried Note 3/S8+/S7 - none have this problem. Most people have no idea what I am talking about as it's location specific. Anyone else has seen this problem ?

Had a 6T and a friend also has one. The GPS is definitely crap.
It has lock in an open field. But if you are in a city, or there are various roads around you, good luck!
Managed to already do like 30km of a detour on foot thanks to it. It also caused Waze to tell me wrong directions.
I did check other phones, like a P10, and an S7 Edge, and a Note 4 (lol). They all had like full green signals, while the 6T struggled to achieve mid-range reception. There is something wrong with the antenna, or the gain, something. Hardware/build wise. I'd just get a OnePlus 7 or 5T (if someone can't wait). This is clearly something OP can't/won't fix. It's just not possible.
There was a site where they tested GPS lock... shame they didn't do one for the 6T.
Something is more than likely wrong with the phone itself. I have driven 10k+ miles in cities, country, desert freeways with no civilization for miles with this phone. I have never had a GPS issue. If it did have one, I'd be pissed since I'm a ride share driver and I go back to California on a regular basis visiting family from Las Vegas.
If you're rooted with magisk you can try installing the Global Optimized GPS File Replacer module
I use GPS constantly to handle traffic and the 6t works fine for me both in the city and out in the suburbs. No issues.
I will say maps recently changed something such that if it expects you to exit, but you stay on the highway, it shows you going down the exit for a few hundred feet until it realizes you aren't exiting. But that's a Google thing not a 6t thing.

Same exact problem, occurring only near my workplace. Consistently, on all versions of OOS so far. If I remember to start GPS Locker before opening Maps or Waze, it is much less likely to happen but it has happened twice even that way. Never had this issue with any other phone.

I am still fighting with this issue. Just did a big install in my car and I have use Android Auto when driving and it's even harder to fix when it happens. Have to go back into the phone and launch the GPS fix app and hope the GPS starts moving on the head unit screen. It's very, very annoying.
GPS works great for me. I have only used custom ROMs so not sure how it works in stock. But using microg and osm+ I have never really had any issues. Using a GPS locking app such as GPS locker seems to help. Using Google apps for location is not working for me all the time beings how Waze requires Internet access to find locations. And beings how I use t mobile service is not available in most of western Washington. Even when using GPS locker I never have lost lock once GPS was locked. There has been two times I had to use the update a-gps from the GPS test app. If using microg local gsm seemed to be the best back end for me.
Hey all, I really need some help, borderline might send this phone back even though I love it so far. GPS location is absolute garbage.
Countless google searches show this issue persisted even back during OnePlus 5 phones. This is my first OnePlus device and I am slowly ( I am patient) having some issues creep up. The GPS issue doesn't have any official fix from my search, only some tricks that work temporarily.
How has OnePlus ignored this for so long?
Waze barely ever GPS locks and when it does its for a few minutes. Google maps is the same way. No amount of reboots, clearing location cache, toggling power savings etc has worked enough for me to say "its fixed". I never experienced this on other devices. This is why I came to XDA (back when I used to flash everything). Has anyone discovered a real fix? Do I have to flash some new ROM to resolve this?

You might want to say TMobile version. But I'm guessing you don't have root access bc TMobile locks the bootloader?
If you had root you could just edit and replace the gpsconfig file
Yes TMobile version it's new just got it a few days ago, untouched. I haven't been in the rom flashing game in awhile, kind of veered off that but your reply tells me that will fix my issue? Is there another thread I missed that explains why that would work?
If so please kindly link me.
I have an update for those having this issue. I have done more testing with GPS locker and noticed random results. It definitely helped usability by 20% but by no l means is this a fix.
GPS locker once locked around 10-15 seconds I open Waze and immediately it loses all connections, it's as if Waze itself is not working right, perhaps it's Android 10 or 5g. Ultimately you can sit and wait and Waze will eventually work for a few minutes or so then die out again.
Google maps was better by about 15% due to GPS locker although it too will from time to time lose GPS and you may end up missing an exit.
Last thing I tried was switching network mobile mode from automatic 2g/3g/lte/5g to the one below that without 5g and noticed considerable improvement but I do not have enough testing time to conclude that works.
No one has GPS issues? It's all honky Dory? There's plenty of threads on this but no bite. I am more curious for those on 7tpro.
I wonder if it's a 5g problem. I have been seeing a similar experience on the note 10+ 5g boards.
https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5...Note10-5G/GPS-loss-when-5G-is-on/td-p/1338709
Is one example,

Another.
Anyone with 5g chime in?
I'm having these issues too, I notice it a lot on Waze. Google's cool.

Alright I have confirmed my suspicions with the help of this same issue on the Note 10 5G forums. After I left home today I set my phone on a navigation drive using Waze, it connected right up on 4G LTE (I guess no 5G towers nearby). As I was driving, rock solid for 15 minutes it suddenly connected to 5G, you know what happened next, it disconnected GPS immediately. This confirmed what everyone else is saying. There is a bug or some problem when these new 5G phones switch between 4G lTE -> 5G and back, more specifically, I dont think 5G is ready for prime time when it comes to GPS locking.
I switch my network settings to not search for 5G and GPS with Waze was rock solid. This is indeed the fix / workaround for now when your using navigation apps until Oneplus / T mobile releases a fix. I am more disgusted that these 2 flagships (Note 10 + 5G included) was not properly tested and vetted before marketing shoved it down our throats.
I've noticed the same issues. Although I've posted on Reddit about it.
Waze as an app has issues with GPS if you read the reviews so it's a tough one.
I did do a small test like you in regards to 5g and GPS and it seems to have been better.
Very unfortunate. I'm debating whether to keep the phone and simply put it to 4g or just return and get like a note 10+ (standard 4g) for the time being since 5g seems to have issues
Edit:
Looking at the above linked topic it seems like the issue was fixed with an update for the Galaxy
I wouldn't worry too much, 5G is still new and I am confident they will iron things out. I thought about switching phones too but for what? The other 5g had the same issue(note).
In time it will be fixed, for now when I am on the road I leave it at 4g lte and I am good to go.
confirmed with GPS locker app...
Using GPS locker I can notice the 5G issues like others on my op7Tp 5G ... an easy fix (until this gets addressed by t-mobile) is to disable 5G and use 4G instead :crying:
For some reason it seems to be a oneplus wide issue like you said since the OP5. I had an OP5 damaged the screen and went back to my MI MIX 2. Had 0 issues with my MI MIX 2 other than the weird location of the selfie cam (bottom right of the screen). Recently upgraded to the OP7 pro (non 5g) unlocked version (i know you have the 7t pro but figure we could all help each other) and definitely still have some GPS issues. Google works, however waze is intermittent and especially bad while making phone calls (EX android auto+waze, while hands free talking on the phone).
GPS Locker definitely helps for me. i have it auto-lock then launch waze (settings in the GPS Locker app).
I've also used compass steel app and used it to calibrate the compass in the phone. This also seems to help some.
The only other thing worth investigating i think would be to check a few settings and see how they pan out. Related to the battery optimization settings in android 9 and 10. Adaptive battery (seems to be system wide), and battery optimization options (seems to be app specific) for waze gps locker, etc. Let me know what everyone finds out. Seriously tempted to trade in my OP7 pro if the mi mix 4 looks promising. My Mi Mix 2 was solid and im a huge OP fan....
Maybe it's worth it now to bring this to the OnePlus forum community. When I have time I'll whip something up and link it here so we can add to it. More eyes are needed from there end.

No issues on my end . Tested Waze and Google maps with 5g connection.
I disabled Bluetooth & wifi scanning , not sure if that makes difference

I believe it is worth it. Get enough people with enough devices across different carriers making the issues visible and hopefully someone will fix it!
I've even edited the GPSconfig file to no avail. I would love to get my hands on a similar device (GPS hardware) that is carrier branded and see if that helps the issue. How can I find identical hardware? Maybe a Samsung?

Can you confirm changing your network settings to the second option works for you? Still working for me perfectly.

Yep indeed it does, I've already made a topic about this issue on reddit aswell.
Nice!
I have the tmobile 5g version and gps is horrible. I tried both google maps and Waze. It takes 5 minutes to lock on GPS initially and then while driving it will freeze up and not move for a few minutes (as I get lost) then randomly reconnect and disconnect again. Frustrating since I drive use GPS often in the LA area.
