Hello Guys,
Any Help or Links to Related Threads will be much appreciated.
I have a Verizon NOTE 3, JB 4.3 SM-N900V MJE. I got it back around March 2014 I believe. I almost immediately Rooted it via Kingo. I do NOT have a Custom Recovery (although I would Love to install Safestrap) I also Froze the SDM app (updater app I believe) & Knox Notification app via Rom Toolbox.
Here is my Question, Since I still have Not upgraded to Kit Kat (although I want to via SexTape/Hashcode version) will I be able to Upgrade to Android L, Lollipop? Will I need to Upgrade to Kit Kat 1'st before Updating to Lollipop? I have been Real Nervous about taking the Plunge to Upgrade to Kit Kat (My old Razr got stuck in Boot Loop, Never got it out) but I want to have Android L at some point. If I Defrost the SDM & take the Verizon Update to Android L, I'm pretty sure I will lose Root, I basically want to know What do I have to do to get to Android L, Lollipop & keep Root with my Note 3 still running Rooted JB 4.3 at this time?

Android L is not an option right now and who knows what Big Red has in store for us once they release it. Knowing Verizon I'll have a new phone by the time it gets released for the Note 3. But if you want to go to KK see this post here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55241731&postcount=2 and here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787627
Thanks for the Reply, I already have the Link saved in my Favs, I'm just to scared to take the Plunge for fear of a Boot Loop.
I know that Android L is not an Option YET, but I've read on other Android sites that it should be released late November. Even if that doesn't pan out I want to have a Plan in place or at least know How or What my Options are as to getting it. I'm starting to Wonder will it be Better to Not receive the OTA when it does come out & wait for the Wonderful Developers here to make their own Version with Root, because I'm guessing if I did take an update I would lose Root & it will be a while until someone achieves it through Lollipop.

It is ALWAYS a good idea to wait for the good guys (the developers) to get and trst any new release.
And just because Google says lollipop will be out in late Nov doesn't mean we'll ever get it on the VerizonNote 3.
Until both of the above mentioned are true, no sense planning on anything.
And if you're scared to go to KK I'm not sure why you wouldn't be even more afraid to go to L. Just saying.

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking. As far as Verizon releasing Lollipop, I've been reading about Verizon Note 3's & Android L on several Android sites, Android Central, Android Authority, etc. I know that we probably wont get the update as soon as I've read. Verizon is usually the Last service provider to release the updates. I did do a lil more searching & now I'm reading that it may be April, May, or June for us Verizon Note 3 owners. As far as a Plan, what I mean is I want to at least know what I will need to do or what my Options are to get Android L when it does come out. Which is why I'm asking so early.
#1 Can you go from JB to Lollipop? or Do you have to upgrade to Kit Kat then go to Lollipop? Or does everyone just Not know right now because it hasn't been released yet?
Oh & Yes I am scared to Update to Kit Kat right now but I will do it. I am going to. I think I'm looking for some encouragement that nothing will go Wrong. LoL. I will do it though. Its just I've never actually flashed any ROMS or anything. I had a Razr I rooted & I rooted my Note 3 almost immediately but as you know that process is not that hard or complicated. Did you Flash your Note 3 to Kit Kat? If so, How was the process for you? Any kinks? Setbacks? Any OE on it?
I do have another question you may be able to answer now that I am on the subject. Should I do a FDR before Flashing to Kit Kat??? Will that make the process more likely to succeed? Also I installed the Xposed Framework a couple months ago, will that have any effect on Flashing the Kit Kat? Do I need to uninstall it before going to Kit Kat & if I do flash Kit Kat will I still have the Xposed Framework if I do Not uninstall it? Also Do you have a Link to just install SafeStrap? I want to go ahead & get it installed & play with it a little before flashing Kit Kat. I'm gonna search for a Thread on it now. Dont worry about posting a Link I will find something. If you could help me with those other questions I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your replies. I'm a Semi Newb wanting to further my knowledge on this. I love this stuff. lol Thanks a lot!

#1 no on knows at this point.
If you're going to restore to factory....then simply take the OTA to update to KitKat and then use Towel Root to root it.
All the answers you need are in this section of the forum....and guides are in the general section.

I didn't say I was going to do a FDR, I'm asking if I did would it increase the odds of Nothing going wrong if I Flashed the ROOTED Kit Kat version that is on XDA. BUT I also didn't know it was Possible to Root Kit Kat. Back when I rooted my Note 3, It was Not possible to Root Kit Kat. NOW I'm curious, I thought if you do a FDR that you would NOT Lose Root? True or False? Because I'm thinking if I didn't lose Root, Did a FDR, accepted Verizon OTA TO Kit Kat, that Knox might would Trip. I don't know but I think it might. Do you know? The only other Negative to performing a FDR & accepting the OTA is I could Never go back to JB, & the SD card Problem Verizon Kit Kat was having but XDA version did Not have. Although they may have fixed that issue by now. I think it's just Best I dig back in there & do a lot more reading since I last did because so much could have changed since then. Thanks & Sorry for all the Questions. Again I said I'm a Newb

Hey, I've been thinking about what you said. The accept the Verizon OTA Update for Kit Kat, then Root with Towel Root. If I was to do that Right now & I'm Rooted would Knox Trip?
In order for me to do that, Would I have to UnROOT 1st?
If I do a FDR would I lose ROOT? I don't think I would but I'm not sure.
Accepting the Verizon Update & Rooting afterwards sounds easier than, Installing SafeStrap, & Flashing KIT KAT. I'm not sure if it would be, but it does sound easier.
Which is Better? Verizon Stock Kit Kat vs XDA Kit Kat version???
Thanks

So I got my first smartphone, and being naive, I downloaded and installed the OTA update from AT&T because I wanted to be able to store my apps on my 64GB SD card instead of the limited 16gb already on my phone. A few days later, I looked into rooting, only to find out that update breaks it. (at least as far as I know).
So my question is, is there a way to root this update, or are the devs working on one? Or will they wait for 4.3 to be released? I'm not sure how this process goes, I have been jailbreaking iPods and iPads for the last 5 years, but I presume it is similar, seeing as they both gain root.
Also, is there a way to uninstall the OTA update so I can then root? I am new to all this, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Quick answer... You are stuck. No rollback or root for now. There are always people working on rooting and not waiting for.
4.3. Maybe someone will figure out how to restore old rom. Who knows.
All your questions have been answered in other threads.
Well a lot of people can't upgrade to MF3 so I say first thing first....what version are you on? MDL? or MF3? If you're MDL any of the rooting options should work. If you upgraded to MF3 like the previous person said you're stuck. Since you're used to iOS...think of it as upgrading to new firmware and CRAPPLE no longer signing the previous OS, and Android doesn't store your BLOBS and you can't use Tiny umbrella.

1) Confirm you are on MF3 and not MDL (settings/more/about device/last 3 letters in your build version). MDB is oldest, MDL is what you want to keep rooting, MF3 is the newest and unrootable for the time being.
2) You cannot root MF3. If you are on MDL and use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper before updating to MF3, you might be able to preserve your root.
3) You can bet there are people trying to exploit this new build. Same as when a new version of ios comes out, you have to wait until someone jailbreaks it. We're waiting for someone to root MF3.
4) When 4.3 comes out they will try to root that one too...or hope that whatever root method we currently use, at that time, still works.
5) They used something called a QFUSE in the MF3 update that prevents us from downgrading once we're on MF3. Until (if) someone finds a way to exploit that, you're stuck on MF3.
I have had my S4 since switching to ATT in late November and have been following the XDA forums very closely since then. It was thanks to the XDA forums that I was able to root my S4.
However, no matter how far, wide, and meticulously I look on the site, there is no mention of the existence of running KIT-KAT on the i337 S4 for AT&T, save for the Google Play Edition and the version with the octacore etc.
I know these forums are strict (and should be) about questions being asked more than once, but I am not asking when KITKAT will be released through AT&T or even Samsung because I honestly don't care. I simply want to get KitKat on my device running with relative stability. I know there are custom roms out there, but most of them were released...a month ago or so? MAYBE I'm missing something, but if anyone here is in similar shoes, I would appreciate it if you'd echo my sentiments/request to find out if it can be done and how.
Anyone who knows how I can learn more about loading ASOP onto my i337 S4, I would greatly appreciate it. If the limitation is a locked boot loader that you CANNOT get around (excluding safestrap), do let me know! I'm sure a lot of people would benefit from the answer to this question.
Otherwise I'm going to go buy the Google Play Edition of one of the Android devices that has an unlocked boot loader.
Cheers,
Justin

What version are you currently running. Go to about phone and post your baseband version. If the 2nd to last digit is f or higher you can't get kit kat yet. If it is before f then you are free to do whatever you want., If you are rooted you can just download rom manager from the play store and flash a recovery the easy way. Then get cyanogenmod or something for your device.

Thank you for your reply!!!
That is most unfortunate, since it is i337UCUEMK2 - even if I did some crazy stuff to go back to MF3, I'd be right at f anyway. ROM Manager and flashing a recovery the easy way seemed simple enough and I was going to do that but it ended up not working, then I tried using Goo Manager and that soft-bricked my phone and I spent hours getting it back to MK2 again. It's back to the way it was, but I still want to update to Kit-Kat.
Btw, could you tell me why it isn't possible because of my baseband? Thanks failedjedi, and anyone else that can offer useful information.
Cheers,
J

With mf3 they locked down the bootloader. So before mf3 you were able to put a custom recovery and custom roms. Since MF3 no one has figured out how to bypass it yet. With mf3 you can use safestrap to sort of get some custom roms, but it still needs to boot the stock kernel as you can't yet use a custom kernel. As a result you are limited to only 4.2.2 Touchwiz based roms working. Now safestrap has a beta for newer versions, not 100% sure what it does and does not support yet as I'm sticking with my mf3 and a 4.2.2 jellybean rom. But the beta is new and probably still buggy.
But basically since you need the stock kernel, you are limited to only the android version your current stock version is.
Yeah as an android developer, I accept that, but am not going to permit it to remain true. This might take awhile...

If you are a developer there are bounties out for someone to get this working on mf3>
I don't have that issue but good luck if you try--:good:
Thanks! Didn't really know there were bounties for that - worthwhile ones anyway given that im dev apps and messing with AOSP and mainly my att s4 every chance I get.
Actually id be doing it for mk2, and if it becomes apparent that mf3 is easier to do it with ill do with that since I'd just DANGEROUSLY use Odin to go back, root, sideload titpro and block the sht out of the autoupdate. From what ive seen, the intermediary version between mf3 and mk2 might be most likely. This is all conjecture anyway. Sooner or later I will allow people to be free even with contracted or used phones.

Once you root, you can get rid of all the junk T-Mobile installed on our D801s... So yes, you can do that without installing a custom ROM.
On the root question on KK, I'll let some one else answer that since I still haven't upgraded (no need to since my LG G2 works much better with CloudyFlex ROM despite the 4.2.2 tag).
Cheers!
As of right now, there is no root for T-Mobile G2s running Kit Kat. Root works for other carriers but there have been reports about T-Mobile having issues. We'll just have to wait and see if someone can find a workaround for us.
You can disable most T-Mobile bloatware in the settings until root is available (I think autoprime is working on it). If not, you can downgrade to Jellybean 4.2.2 and then root. It was surprisingly easy and fast to root the Jellybean version, though. I'm no expert so I can't help you with this, but be sure to read and reread instructions if you decide to do any modifications to your phone! I learned the hard way after softbricking mine.

Whoa, really? Did you root before upgrading to KK or after? I was impatient and bricked my phone by trying to flash Kit Kat and had to go through the process of unrooting and trying to flash the stock firmware several times (it was a nightmare because I'm noob and my laptop kept freezing). I didn't want to fail at flashing my device a second time, so I'm quietly waiting for the IOroot kinks to be sorted out... unless they've already been fixed?
Has there been any updates with rooting this version yet.thanks
My lady has been locked up for 8 months and is due out Thursday. Her S4 is Safestrap rooted MF3 running stock rim. version (she missed having the loki bootloader by minutes n took the update). Anyway she gets out on Thursday n her phone has been in her property this whole time.
What do I need to do when she gets out? Anything I need to not do or not accept ? Of course there are a ton of Google updates going on n I know to accept those. Will at&t send the KK update to her phone or because of root it won't send for it? If she does get the KK update, by chance, do Y's lol have a root method (only reason for that question is my S4 is a VZW with lokified bootloader but I have seen issues we are having with out KK update) any help n all help is much appreciated

If her phone says Custom when booting, the KitKat update will fail to finish and will not be installed.
As for whether she can root the KitKat update, she can't if she goes full stock and then updates to NC1 (I think). However since she's still on MF3 I believe she can get a rooted 4.4.2 ROM, however there's a very high chance it'll clear your data. This may be of assistance, however I'm not sure if it'll work or not so don't try it until someone who knows more than I do says it's clear to try it or not.
Ok Noob here (at least in this forum) - tmobile note 4 : Not rooted (yet)
1) should I update to 5.0 OTA or stick with 4.4.4?
2) IF i move to 5.0 does anyone know where i can get original stock tmobile 4.4.4 ROM if i want to go back?
3) I figure If I OTA update to 5.0 and then root - It would be safer than rooting 4.4.4 , but really want to backup my 4.4.4 if possible? How can I do this without root?
4) I heard (rumor) that root under 5.0 is more restrictive than 4.4.4 is this right?
Lastly
Under tis forum i see 2 sun categories:
Note 4 Android Development (Exynos)
Note 4 Android Development (Snapdragon)
How can i tell which processor I have in my device?
Thank you for your patience.
1. Really its up to your preference if you don't like it you can always go back to kitkat. theirs a lot of guides how to do so.
2. yes go to sammobile or search the forums.
3. there's no way of backing up 4.4.4 without root. you can root 4.4.4 or 5.0.1
4. I haven't really heard this, But really you just try it and if not your liking then go back to kitkat.
5. you have the snapdragon since its from t mobile.

Thanks so much! One last question - If do the OTA update to 5.x through Tmobile - do i need to worry about loosing any data or apps, apps settings, etc?
Im not rooted so cant do titanium or nandroid, but worry about things going missing after update - what should i backup ? or is it pretty seamless these days?
Sorry if this seems like a dumb question - last time i did OTA back on Eclair to Froyo it basically nuked everything.. so though id ask to make sure.
