The Note 2 has 2 gigabytes of ram, compared to the 1gigabyte of s3, so its more future proof. The screen is also bigger and better.
Question is, is it worth it? Or is it too big for a phone?
Please don't ever say futureproof again because you can not simply 'futureproof' something
My SIII uses MAX 800mbs
The international version comes with 2GBs of RAM so maybe you could swap yours out for one of those
If you're looking for a bigger screen though then yes the Note is worth it

lol @ futureproof
i keep the same phone for no more than 5-6 months. i just can't imagine sticking with the same for any longer than that. and here is my reasoning:
if you get a new phone and then sell it 5-6 months later (before the next iteration of the phone comes out) then you will sell it at 80% of the original price. however if you keep it for 12 months (and the new phone comes out) and you try to sell it you'll be able to get only 50% of what you paid for the phone. so I always change phones every 5-6 months. so thats how I stay up-to-date with the latest and greatest. so basically i'm 'renting' the phone for $100 for 6 months.. which is not bad at all. in fact that's actually CHEAPER if you think about it.
Umm both s3's that I've used on AT&T have 2 gigs of ram so I don't know who told you that information. If you have a s3 wait for jelly bean because it is essentially the same phone besides jelly bean features and the s-pen. Don't get my wrong, the note 2 is an amazing phone. I had the note 1 and now I'm on an international note 2. The battery life is the big selling point for me, but it is ALOT faster than the note 1 or the s3.
Honestly only you can answer that question.
The Note II has many useful features you have to decide if they are worth the price of admission. If I had an upgrade to use I wouldn't hesitate to pickup the note even if I has an S3. But as you have an S3, a relatively new device, I assume you would have to pay full AT&T price. If that's the case I'm not sure I would be willing to drop $650 for a new Note II if I already had an S3. But I'm on a very tight budget at the moment you may be in a different situation.
I have an upgrade and plan to use it to pick up a Galaxy Note II Friday.
From my perspective yes.
I changed and am very happy.
More ram, insane battery, faster, screen is better with polarized glasses.
Spen, multi view.

So I just switched from the S3 to the N2.
My reason, the styles and bigger screen (my target resolution to avoid eyestrain when using RDP is 250dpi N2 is a better resolution than the S3)
As for hardware specks I was more than happy with the S3, All I want is a good battery and the ability to use the phone all-day: GPS, note taking, Recording minutes, Camera, editing photos, playing podcasts, and web browsing. (if I get a day's use out of it I'll be happy.)
The S3 battery did restrict my ability to use it to its full potential. I'll comment on the Note2 after I have used it for a month.
I don't know why people are saying the note 2 has more ram than the s3 because the s3 and note 2 both have 2 gigs of ram... Internal - 16 GB storage, 2 GB RAM

i came from int S3 like yours & i'm not looking back
the battery is just awesome with all the screen estate
I don't think I'll ever be able to go back to a 1GB phone. Switching through apps works like it should on the Note 2. With that said, it still manages to fill it up rather quickly. Visit enough web pages and open enough apps, it offloads the app from the memory. I think 4GB will be perfect, for today. But probably 4GB won't be enough for 2 years from now when it is available. Such is life.
But I love 2GB ram on this phone. Along with the superb battery, big screen, S Pen (just the ability to write notes down as quickly as you can do with a pen and paper), and airview, I think it is a worth upgrade and the hassle of having to sell a used Galaxy, and taking a hit on some costs.

Rumblings from Samsung indicate the S4 will be released by March 2013. That's a short 10 months after the S3 release... I don't have the link right now, can find it if needed...
In my opinion the Note's screen is too big for a functional phone. I'm not a fan of the "inbetweener" sizes... Two small for a tablet, too big for a phone. However, it's all about preference and usage.

I come from the Galaxy S3 and was a little afraid for the big Note2.But now afther a few days i not like the S3 anymore and i'am very happy with the new note.
Coming from the s3, I am VERY happy with the choice of the upgrade. The screen is nicer to look at, colors are more vibrant. I personally like the screen size, just about perfect for me. I will most likely skip the S4, no way I want to go smaller now. I will hold my next upgrade for the Note 3...love it!
The Note 2 isn't THAT big. I thought it would be a lot larger. So little bezel and the width of the phone makes it very practical.

If the answer to the above questions is yes, then the upgrade is worth it for you. If not, then no. There are other differences of course between the two phones, but these three are the main ones.

I had a Note 1, and I initially had zero intention on getting an Note 2, until I played with one. Now that I have a Note 2, I really don't think I need the Note 3 . . . . but I haven't had it in my hands yet.
Who's going to upgrade from the 2 to to 3, and if you are, what features are pushing you to do it?
I'm still on the fence. The 1080p screen is really the only thing that's tempting me at the moment.

I'm the same. Have had the Note 2 just about a year now, and kind of feel like I need to upgrade just to get something new. Plus I really like the look of the window flip cover and the leather textured back. I'm probably gonna hold off at least until the Nexus 5 gets announced though, plus there doesn't seem to be a way to get one on AT&T that isn't bootloader locked yet.
I am upgrading for 2 main reasons the full HD screen and for the 32 gig built in memory ( the update to put apps on sd card will be useful as well). I am constantly swapping apps around on my note 2 because we never got the ipdate to move apps to sd. Plus I am a tech junkie.
My Tech Junkie factor will probably be the big reason for me to do it . . . Does anyone know of any stores I can walk into any time soon to get my hands on it and decide if I want to pre-order or not?
Right now I'm playing around with an LG G2 which has similar internal specs compared to the Note 3. Just the performance alone is enough for me to upgrade from my Note 2. I will be returning the G2 by the 4th of October to maximize my $35.00 14 day rental of the phone from Verizon. I will get the Note 3 when it's available. The G2 is a nice phone, but I want the larger screen.

Upgrading here from Note 2 .. I have ZERO problems with it.. but Note 3 is just tempting .. upgraded everything even the Weight of the device ..
I cant let go of this habit of changing devices .. or you know what .. Ill call it a hobby and carry on.
The device will be sold in our markets from the 25th.. there is even a countdown timer in the Samsung shop ..
Most likely upgrading because of the screen and the "leather" back, but not immediately when released. I'd rather wait for a month longer for the price to drop quite a bit, and it will drop.

By how much do you think? I'm debating canceling my pre order if it's substantial enough.
I'm upgrading from the note 2 to the note 3 because 1. More space! 2. Faster GPU! 3.faster CPU 4. Better camera 5. More RAM. That is all .
I don't care for the spen. I have never taken mine out from the note 2.
I take alot of pictures so the upgraded camera will be a welcomed addition. I almost brought the Nokia 1020 just for its 46mp camera

Agree on the camera. I would upgrade from my Note 2 on all of the above in fact except for Knox. Not sure I want a locked down device, or to lose my warranty on day one! If you can't flash, what's the point? I'm waiting a while to see how this shakes out...

Another upgrade over here. The N2 has been the best phone I could ask for but more screen is always welcome. And if history repeats N3 will get even better battery life than N2! Had N1 (LTE and int'l) and N2 (i317m) so the N3 int'l will be a real treat.
The S4 is on Craigslist tonight.
5 months ago, i was talking with my wife and said i won't upgrade to note 3 when it is come out..
when i see note 3 now with more feature and more power.. so tempting...
The reasons i probably upgrade:
- screen 1080p
-3GB ram i know i don't need it lol
- more features..
- design a lot better then note 2...
now the only problem is.. i can't decide which one to get.. exynos or snapdragon when i want to get it..
Last, i was expecting bigger battery tho.. maybe 3,600 mAh.. but it is still the same.. so another one that influence my decision is have to wait for review about battery life.
I am upgrading just for the screen. My gf got the s4 and the screen is amazing. I have much better than average near sight but cant see past 30ft for my life, but I can see the pixels on my note 2. No one else i know can see them but all i see is jaggies and boxes. So I am looking forward to the screen,
Some other bonuses is the cpu. After seeing a review of the lg2 and knowing it has very similar performance, i cant wait to get my hands on a device that fast. Also the lg2 has been getting better battery life than the note 2 with only a 3,000mah battery. So there might be a good increase in battery life for the note 3.
And last is the software. It can be done on the note 2 but you know samsung will not add the features to the note 2. I use multiple windows a lot and am looking forward to use more than one app at one. AND THE NOTE 2 CAN DO THIS! I have had 2 of the same apps open before by opening one app then in the other window open a file with the same app and it works no problem, but i would like this to be easier.
I pre-ordered mine and now have to wait 3 weeks
Upgrading from Note 2. More RAM. More cpu poerr. Biegger screen. Better technology.

I personally wouldn't choose Note 3 or any Note.
Why?
Because of size. The size of Note 3 is for a limited market.

Really happy with my S4, the screen seemed really big at first (coming from a Sensation with a 4.3" screen), but now I've gotten used to it, I think its the perfect size and wouldn't want to go bigger (already have a Nexus 7, so not much point) or smaller for that matter. Dont really fancy the back on the Note 3 either, although Im sure its probably easily swapped out.

Note series are for a small niche market. You will have less ROM and less developers supporting it. Less user means less developers. I rather upgrade to a Nexus 5.
The Note 3 is too small to be a tablet and too big to be a phone. No regrets about buying the S4 and I will be keeping it, especially given that I only use CWM and never change my ROM via Odin or Kies so still have the non-Knox bootloader, unlike the Note 3.
This will be my last Samsung device however. I'm not being told I can't root my device by anyone.
There should be another option in the poll:-
I am keeping my S4 but this will be the final Samsung phone I will be buying.
S4 for now, until S5/ Note 4
this is EXACTLY what was going through my mind. I live in India and would get the exynos variantof Note3 if I had to get it.
now think it in the terms of the previous iteration by Sammy. The end user experience using a Note 2 was much much much better than the S3, but the gap diminished to a minuscule aperture in the case of S4 / Note 3 combo.
The hand recognition for S4,much manageable size is a good case for me to put any idea to get the Note 3, to rest.
There was a very weak thought through my mind to get the Note 3 cause of the supposedly HMP and core migration, but the Note 3 is in the same boat as the S4. higher clock speed is a "meh" .lol.
cannot say the same thing about the Snapdragon variant market though. for me, Note 3 is a good upgrade for the "Note" users. For those S3 or other flagship users who are wanting to upgrade, I think S4 is a "saner" choice.
Here in India, there is a price difference of around 11,000 INR. I don't think a leather looking plastic back panel is worth the price. :cyclops:

Achyut.

i m definitely keeping my s4 as i have an old bootloader but i was actually considering to purchase a note 3 because i wanted a bigger screen and a better battery. I do own S4 and N3 and I can tell that is a big difference between them. If you get comfortable with the size of note go with him. It's a way better product. By the way...I don't think that the note 3 will be less developed, Samsung will sell milions of them and there is a lot of people who just love the form factor and the abilities of the note series. I will keep anyday Note 3.

for the average user I'd say the note of any kind is great as where I am many like to watch movies on it etc. but for myself and the many others on XDA, we like customization. I had a note 2 but sold if off for the s4. at first I thought it was a mistake but now i think its for the better. development wasn't that great on the note 2 forums and aosp roms don't really support the device much. the s4 seems to have more variety interms of hybrid tw roms as well as custom aosp roms and kernel support.
I have both and truly the SG Note 3 is simply a bigger screen S4 with a pen.
That said, I really like the bigger screen, and the pen makes life so much easier. But then again, I'm a bloke with big hands and the S4 keyboard is just a little too small for them. Allbmyvtxts lookvlike this.....
Like someone said, you can use the Note 3 for some minutes but holding it in your hand while walking for example is not a good idea because it's not ergonomic,if they had chose rounded borders instead of cubic a la S2 it would have been way better.
I had an S2 and ended swapping it with Sensation just because of that
Try G2
I just had the S4 a month ago and I'm EXTREMELY satisfied. Though I'd certainly would love to have a Note 3. Next year I might switch to the next iteration of the Note. The Galaxy line has vastly improved (also the Android platform and Android OEMs in general) so next year would probably be a great time to upgrade.

Nexus 5 released a day back and the specs are not that bad if we see. Now this has given rise to a hunger of having an official google product in me. I use my note 2 like crazy and love it too but I want to see how it feels having a nexus device.
Storage is one thing that still makes me think of retaining my Note 2. I dont use SPen much either. Nexus 5 looks strong on paper and its tempting me. Is it advisable to sell my Note 2 off and get a Nexus 5?
I am in same situation but specs are really a boost from note 2 but major flaws of nexus 5 are storage and battery life....though I really want to see the display comparison....is the nexus 5 display better than note 2's...I know its 1080p compared to 720p but I really saw some 1080p display looking worse than 720p's like xperia z1....
I will wait for some reviews and then will decide is it worth to upgrade..
The Nexus 5 compared to Note 2 , looks like cheep, plastic, smaller and non Spen device.
Next Move will bring us to Note 4.
And the answer is no way to abandon my Note 2.
Performance on the Nexus 5 will be superior. That Snapdragon 800 screams.
The main issue is battery life. A petty 2300mha battery for a 5 inch 1080p display... It's going to suck.
Screen is slightly smaller with more pixels. But it won't be as jumping with colors as it's an LCD type screen vs our AMOLED screens which pop with colors.
The performance will be much better on the Nexus 5. Better processor. Same RAM. Better GPU. More FREE ram at boot.
Now, if I didn't have the Note 2 and I were to buy a new device, I'd get the Nexus 5. But I think the Note 2 is superior FOR MY USAGE. The SPen helps a lot, and the extra screen is great. The screen is plenty packed with pixels for my usage, too. The 2GB ram is great. In fact, the Note 3 having 3GB isn't an upgrade as you have LESS FREE RAM AT BOOT than the Note 2! WTF Samsung! haha. Anyways, RAM is taken care of by the Android OS. But Samsung takes up too much ram to begin with.
With Nexus devices you won't have that issue, as there is nothing at boot extra. It's only Android processes. So it should run much more smoothly. My Note 2 does stutter or lag a little every once in a while, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I don't know... Battery life on both devices are different. Smaller with updated processors vs bigger battery with less efficient display & processor? I don't know... Wait for some battery tests? Regardless, I've never killed my Note 2 in 18 hours except for my vacation days where I'm on a bus or train for 5-6 hours then I get it down a nice amount.
i was also thinking into a change to a nexus but the battery definitely make me consider having my note a year more. i bought the note for screen and battery and mexus doesn't win at any. moreover i dt know any game yet that doesn't run smoothly in the note and the screen difference is not that noticeable since my cousin has a 1080p screen and mine seems to be better also for him.
my 2 cents

of course Nexus 5. Note 2 will get its last update with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But you will have many updates with Nexus 5. If you are not a traveller person, don't think about battery life. Buy 32 gb model and live your days good.

Non removable battery (instant deal killer right there for me), small and non expandable storage (32GB vs the 80GB total on my Note II), small display (even smaller than its 5" since part of that space is taken up by the virtual buttons), no S-Pen, no Samsung SW features like MultiWindow = for a poweruser they don't even play in the same league.
Samsung is doing something very stupid with the Region Lock and something less stupid but that is pissing powerusers and geeks off with the Knox warranty status but the (sad) truth is that the Note III is the ONLY smartphone out there today which I would replace my Note II with. ANYTHING else is INFERIOR to my Note II.

Well, If I were to buy a new phone and the Playstore sold hardware in my country, I'd seriously consider the Nexus 5.
But as an upgrade to Note 2? No way. Sure, it will run circles around the Note in the performance department... but I find that for my use, the Note's performance is sufficient (even though it lags now and then). Even for games, the lower res mens that pretty much everything runs smooth so far. And the lower res doesn't really bother me, as I find the screen of the Note 2 absolutely fantastic... better then that of HTC One, IMVHO. Xperias just can't compare. Sure some text zoomed out can be a tad sharper on 1080p, but otherwise the screen on the Note 2 is just gorgeous.
The S-Pen is usefull... especially for extending menus while browsing the web. That's one unique functionality that only a handfull of phones has and means that some webpages can only be browsed with these devices. Other tricks like video or gallery highlight thumbs are neat as well. And it's good for Excel editing too, especially during a meeting (otherwise it's quite difficult in a zoomed out view - only view in which you actually see a reasonable amount of data).
Storage? For me 16+64 GB is barely enough. Actually scratch that, 16GB internal is definately NOT enough (a bit more than 10 GB available...). I hope an update can allow me to use the external memory for apps. My memory card is almost full as well. So 32 GB altogether? No thanks (even with less bloat).
Battery? It's decent on the Note 2, but I wouldn't call it a stellar performer. So here we have a battery that's smaller by almost a third? And not removable too? I'll pass, thank you.
Plus, does the Nexus 5 even have the USB OTG capability? I remember there were some issues with the earlier models. I like to output video via MHL... love connecting an external USB drive or additional memory card via a card reader and it can be nice to connect external controllers via USB. Is Nexus 5 able to do this all?
Other stuff, primarily Multiwindow and Popup Browser are neat also. Hopefully even Pen Window will be possible on the Note 2.

of course Nexus 5. Note 2 will get its last update with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But you will have many updates with Nexus 5. If you are not a traveller person, don't think about battery life. Buy 32 gb model and live your days good.

It's not correct. Note 2 will get Kitkat update next year

Think of it this way. Only for a few minor hardware boosts and a new Launcher would you really want to upgrade ?
Note 2 still stands as a power house when compared. And if you like the idea of talking to your phone start using Google Now the experience will be no diff.
On the other thoughts I would love to upgrade to Moto X if ever get an opportunity

After reading all your views I completely feel I'll have that itch with the nexus 5 when it comes to battery and storage Coz both things matter to me. I think my note 2 will stay in my pocket for comparatively good time

I am running the Ditto note 3 rom. .. With 4.3... Note 3 apps and installed the 4.4 kit kat apps on top of it. .
I also have the nexus 7_2013.. which will get 4.4 and is similar to nexus 5.. But I rarely use it. .
I use my note 8 and note 2 more
Why would I need the nexus 5 ?... Note 2 is good enough. .
Will bother about a new phone next year

C'mon!
Oh God! I think it makes no sense at all! Galaxy Note II is a pretty much older device which can still be compared to other TOP devices. Plus, the Note II has got touchwiz, and lots of Samsung applications which are pretty usefule. Nexus devices are a little too poor to me. I think that if you want to try out a Nexus device, you should try the Nexus 7 2013! I think that rocks. Got such a cool display, so incredibly fast and pure Google style. Plus: updates and other Nexus stuff.
I have a note 2. Any former Note 2 owners here care to comment on whether I should do a straight trade for an s4? In terms of resale value, S4 is worth more. Just seeing how battery and overall use compares. I hardly use the pen.
Noo

S4 is faster (Processor 1.9 ghz) with most of the goodies as the note 2 and the S4 still gets great battery life. Thats just my opinion! The only thing that the note has is a bigger keyboard which i do like cuz i have dumb thumb!
yesssss. fair trade.
i currently have both phones on my plan. the note 2 was my primary until i got the s4. been using s4 for 2 months now. sometimes i REALLY miss that big old phone......I've been tossing around the idea of switching back to the note 2. one weird thing though. i used the note2 for 8 months and the s4 for only 2. at first the note seemed a "little" big. then it was absolutely normal to my hand and mind.now that im using the s4 (a big phone in its own right), the s4 seems a tad smallish and the note must have grown since i quit using it because it is now HUGE.....WTF happened? oh well. they are both awesome phones and either one is a great one to have. technically the s4 is superior. but MAN that note sure is a nice phone.
i'll quit rambling now, just my two cents worth.
FYI I kept the first note 2 I have for myself. Bought a second used note 2 for my wife for $180 and traded that one for the s4 and then sold my old s3 for $200! Can't complain about that. She's petite with little hands so the note 2 pretty big. I do think her phone "looks cute" now that I'm used the note 2 just for a few weeks.
Don't do it.
