Long time lurker here, love XDA and just actually got up and running with my new Note 4. The same thought went through my head with the stock Note 3... "Why the hell do they make a phone so large and just blow the icons up, it does me no good, I'm not a blind man..." So, naturally, one of my first steps after getting root was changing the DPI.
Like with the Note 3, I quickly realized that the Samsung Applications don't play nice with the custom DPI.
I realize this may be a completely stupid question, but my Google-fu has failed me so far. I've tried using Xposed to change the DPI (just on the Camera so far) back to defaults, but nothing seems to change the camera. Is there an alternate method to tell these applications to use the default DPI, are there modded version of these apps released yet, or is there a guide I could use to assist with modding these apps to make them friendly to DPI changes?
did you enable (tick) the (app settings) at module page of xposed? I am using note 4 too, and set default dpi = 480, and notice camera app is not support custom dpi, so i use app setting to assign it back, wish this can help.
Oh samsung, you still haven't made the camera app multi dpi, that's poor

Hey thanks for this info, but I don't seem to be able to change dpi of dialer/phone with app settings (camera and lockscreen worked). Am I changing the wrong app? (changed com.sec.phone and com.android.phone back to default 640)
Anyone know how to change recent apps dpi back to normal?

Nevermind, I forgot it was to change contacts apk. Also, with the new DPI, minimizing apps by drawing in from the corner no longer works. It will show as if it is shrinking the app to pop-up window then it will vanish. However, the window is still active as I tried multiple apps and then it prevented me because it said there is already 5 popups active (which is the maximum). Thanks for any help in advance!

I am not a developer, but I like all the work developers done for Android phones. I also had the same problem. Camera problem has been solved using "App Setting" application thru Xposed framework. However, Dialer and Keyboard didn't work.
Then I finally download Google Keyboard , which is the best one to use instead of Samsung Stock Keyboard. So, I am looking for another alternative for Dialer. lets see, I will post here if find anything. Thanks!

Hey,
Recently changed the dpi of the entire phone by changing the android system dpi to 380 in the app settings module, everything looks and works perfectly with the google now launcher (not with the lg home launcher sadly ):
However I can not get swiftkey to behave normally, the keyboard is extremely magnified and useless.
Is there anyway I can make swiftkey work with a custom dpi of 380, or any other keyboard that would work ?
What's your issue? I use SwiftKey at 380 DPI without problem.

You've tried reducing the DPI of swift key in app settings I assume?

I have done it two ways:
1:
Changed the android.system to 380 dpi => swiftkey is completely messed up
2:
Changed the android.system and swiftkey to 380 dpi => swiftkey is completely messed up
3:
Left android.system unchanged and changed swiftkey to 380 dpi=> swiftket is messed up

Yeah, that's pretty messed up. I don't use swift key but just installed it, it's fine on mine. I used Textdroider to change DPI to 370 immediately after installing a fresh ROM (CloudyStock 1.2) and I then used App Settings to revert the camera and messaging apps back to 480. I use Nova launcher but everything was fine in stock launcher.
I can't help you with a fix, just merely suggest a possible alternative.

LG stock and Swiftkey work for me
If you can be bothered, try setting all app settings DPI back to default then use textdroider to change DPI (it will change everything!) and then use App Settings to set bugged out apps (only noticed camera and messages) back to default DPI.
Initially I had a problem with setting DPI with Textdroider in that the power/reboot menu was messed up (1/4 of it was completely transparent) so I gradually reduced it from 480 down to 370 and everything looks nice and crisp, even the notification drawer.

Ah perfect !
That did it for me !
Turned off app settings and used textdroider to change to 380 dpi (no problems with power/reboot menu), no bootloop and now everything is looking beautifully crisp as it is supposed to be.
Camera app had to be changed back to 480 dpi with app settings
Thank you !
No problem.

What about the OP's question? Any way to get Swiftkey to behave at reduced DPI?
Hi fellas.
I am using textdroid_dpi to change my whole system dpi from 480 to 400.
I also used Xposed App Settings to change DPIs back to default per certain apps (eg. camera). However, I can't seem to set the DPI for the dialer. Can anyone tell me whats the process name I should set under App Settings? "Phone" does not work.
Thanks!
UPDATE:
I realised the dialer is part of contacts. It's all good now.
Hi, could someone to do Multi DPi ROM? Alternatively, only applications? Something like MultiX would tkari for Note 3? I don't like huge icons and font. and sorry for my english.
You can use xposed app settings apk to alter dpi on a per app basis. You can also edit your build prop to alter your dpi but make sure you have another launcher installed just in case as some app's are hard coded

Xposed is not a solution for Samsung Apps who are not built to display well at lower dpi. Because Samsung can't be bothered to use Google guidelines in their apps.
What the OP asked is what I kinda wish we had, an X-Note ROM or something equivalent, in which the Samsung apps are modified to run and display properly at lower dpi.

Which apps did you set back to 640? I use 480 aswell, but only my carrier text on lock screen and key field for entereing key pass looks awful. I did not change anything back to 640 and everything seems to be ok with samsung apps. Until now I tested Galaxy Apps, S Health (with wanam fix), S Voice and E-Mail. No Problems.
@zerojay:
I have no big characters when I write or answer mail.
So default dpi is 640 and not 650?
G4 stock DPI is 640, I've managed to put this down to 540 without any issues, but it's still way too high for me. I would really love 440 but loads of stuff, including stock camera and more importantly settings, force closes. I really didn't want to have to unlock the bootloader but it looks like I might have to as soon as a new ROM is available.
How did you change the DPI without unlocking the bootloader and gaining root?

Yeah you have to use like Nova or Apex if you change the stock DPI
Yep, confirmed it works with Nova. But found another issue. When it was set to 560, with the camera app in manual mode, you are unable to change the focus to full "zoomed out" or the camera app crashes.
I'm going to leave DPI for now...don;t want the camera to be affected.

I don't have that problem on 540, manual focus works fine. Why all OEMs have to be so limiting on DPI really is beyond me. It can't be that hard to make apps work on lower DPIs.

I thought it was too low! lol I'd like to see the status bar text a little bigger, like for the time, signal, LTE, etc. But without a kdz to restore from, I'm too afraid to try anything on this G4 in case anything goes wrong!

Well all I can say is bring on root so we can get Xposed going. And Viper4Android. That's the one I'm really missing more than anything. OEMs need to talk to that guy about paying him to include it in their roms.

When you changed the DPI did your app drawer button resize? I've changed my DPI down a little and no matter what value I use the drawer button doesn't resize and just looks like a big blurry blob.
I saw people mention in another thread that there were graphical issues with the stock launcher at non-stock dpi. That might be what you're seeing.

Can anyone else try this for me please? Modify your DPI and reboot. Then open the camera app, go to manual mode and select manual focus [MF] then scroll the wheel all the way up (toward the mountain icon). Let me know if the camera app force closes when you do this. it does for me. it's the only thing stopping me running a custom DPI. Thanks.

Strange - I can replicate it everytime. Oh well I'll put up with it for now.
Another issue I have is that while Nova works great with custom DPI, the lockscreen shortcut icons are all blank white icons. I assume because this is still using the stock lockscreen which doesn't like the 560 DPI. Are you seeing this?

I can also confirm this, with 560 DPI, the camera FC when i zoom all the way out but 540 DPI works fine.
I use nova, the stock launcher has a number of glitches at anything but standard DPI. And the lockscreen is LG's stuff so yeah white icons. I have a quick circle case and when I close it the analog clocks are to small and off center. The digital clocks with weather work fine (?!), funny thing is the white "ring effect" when closing the cover is way of center, even though I use the digital clock that fits. Weirdness....
When I had samsung devices in the past developers sooner or later released modified stock apps that worked with most DPIs. It's probably going to happen here to ...

I am using Note 3 custom 6.0.1 rom, rooted and have xposed running. I used device control to reset DPi from 480 to 320. Like always, it resizes every app. Fortunately, I installed App Setting from Xposed module to resize unsupported apps like camera, keypad etc. The problem is, my TouchWiz is somehow partially effected because the grid kept its 480 scale (see attachment to see what i am talking about). I attempted to resize it from 320 to 480 back but the icon is not in their position/drawer so I left it 320 with this problem still. Any solutions?
P/S sorry for bad drawing
After change it back to 480, reboot.
Samsung launcher isn't multidpi. Best used at 480. You need to use modded launcher.
