If you can get safestrap installed it should work. Once you boot into safestrap go to reboot and there is a reboot to download mode. Then just flash a stock tar in odin and you should be set for a replacement. Hope it works out.
Just use terminal to reboot it to Odin...

I found an app on playstore that allowed me to boot directly to download mode. I have already flashed odin and returned phone to asurion stock but jellybean. I have my new phone. My only concern is if they say I violated my agreement since although stock unrooted it is obvious I must have been rooted to stay in jellybean.
Don't worry about Asurion

From what I have read, Asurion doesn't care/check for root. They get your deductible, they get hardware to recycle. It boots(or not), into a box it goes.

My Galaxy S4 stopped working and I'm planning to send it back to get a replacement. However, I rooted my phone before this happened and I'm planning to un-root it before sending it back. I was planning on using the Triangle Away app as well to reset the flash counter but apparently I need to unlock the bootloader first. I read in this thread that you can flash a recovery and root the phone at the same time.
Would using that tool help me in unlocking the bootloader so that I can use the Triangle Away app to reset the counter and un-root my phone using Odin afterwards? The topic creator mentioned that TWRP will auto-lok anything you flash and works as a bootloader unlock but can anyone confirm this? I bricked my Galaxy S3 two weeks ago and don't want to face the same problems with this newly aquired Galaxy S4.
Is it worth it to go through all the trouble to just reset the flash counter or would un-rooting the phone be enough to send the phone back for a replacement?

Thanks, that guide looks really helpful. I do have one question though, it seems the Triangle Away app needs the boot loader unlocked in order to run successfully on the AT&T Galaxy S4 so what would be a good and simple way to unlock the bootloader and is there a way to check whether or not mine is unlocked? Would running the CASUAL tool take care of this (even if my device is already rooted)?
What guide/method did you use to root? Did you not use the bootloader exploit at that time?
I used the Motochopper tool located on this thread. I hadn't researched enough to know about the CASUAL tool at the time

Hmm...yeah I can see that method would probably work, but that wouldn't reset the flash counter to 0 would it? If the seller happens to notice that, then they won't send me a replacement and will probably tell me my warranty is void; hence why I'm trying to get the Triangle Away app to work but need the boot loader unlocked first in order to do that.

Well if all you did was ROOT the flash counter shouldn't be affected. Iused the same tool. I took the additional step of replacing Superuser with SU user. to rid myself of the "custom" unlocked symbolon boot up. However, the phone was NEVER really unlocked.
Thanks for the replies! I managed to un-root the phone by just flashing the AT&T stock firmware using Odin. Hopefully the binary counter won't be an issue.
I need the install-recovery.sh file found here on your I337-UCUAMF3. Must have root access.
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh
like an idiot, i didnt make a backup of that file, and I deleted it not realizing that there is no recovery for UCUAMF3 and tried to install a custom recovery.
Now I cant get into the normal recovery mode and gets stuck in odin mode, in order to boot up i have to do the restart option when i do a physical button boot into odin. its annoying and i want to go back to stock and wait until there is a bootloader unlock and recovery for UCUAMF3.
unfortunately I cant do a factory reset because during the reset process it boots back into odin mode, and recovery doesnt work.
my thinking is if i can get back this install-recovery.sh it will be able to do a factory reset? Also do I need to unroot to go back to factory settings? Any thoughts? Thanks again for any help, and yes ive learned my lesson, spend at least 20 minutes searching the EXACT model/baseband and make sure the guide is for your device..
You can't return to stock, there is no odin flashable firmware. Don't do anymore messing with your phone. You'll just make it worse. Your going to have to live with it the way it is until there is firmware available. As an alternative, best buy can flash it back to stock.
Edit, see this

i cant just do a factory reset in settings? im pretty sure the problem is that it cant boot into the stock recovery because of the deletion of 'install-recovery.sh'
my phone once, already had the odin bootloop thing, then i fixed it so it could boot up normally, but thats because i still had the 'install-recovery.sh' on there...any chance you send that file my way? once i have that im pretty sure ill be able to do a factory reset and remove root.

read that, but their problem seems like their devices wont boot at all. mines does boot, and did normally when i had 'install-recovery.sh'
im pretty sure that file is device specific and varies from device, ive found the file but not one that was from an ATT S4 running UCUAMF3, there is already root access for UCUAMF3 so it someone should be able to copy that file since i was able to delete it?
I don't have mf3. What the f are you messing with stuff like that for when you're on mf3. You need to do some more research on the limitations of returning your device to stock if you mess something up. You're going to end up with an expensive brick.

yeah it was an accident on my part....do you have i337? is there a difference at all between the 'install-recovery.sh' on i337 and i337 with mf3?
UPDATE: just did a power off and a reboot, phone booted fine into android, none of the odin-mode stuff..
also go here, it could help...

Anyone have a set of instructions or a link to returning my phone to completely bone stock? I know I can flash an unrooted and stock firmware, but the bootloader will still be unlocked. I need to RMA my phone and the store has turned me away in the past for having a modified firmware or bootloader.

The boot loader is not locked stock, so that's not a problem. Simply download the MF9 firmware and install using odin. Perform a factory reset in the stock recovery. Then use Triangleaway to reset the flash counter and you will be stock with no signs of tampering.

dont you have to be rooted to use TriangleAway? I would assume that using Odin to go back to MF9 would cause you to lose root, no?
Correct. You need to be rooted for TA.
What I'd do is use TA first. Then use Odin to install MF9 (or one of the older stock rom's). If the download screen still says custom, do another RTN/Factory Reset. That should clean it all up.
You could also try to just flash the stock recovery. Then run TA and see if that resets it all to Official on the Download screen. If it does, all you should need to do from there is Full Unroot from the SuperUser app.

Download the ODIN one click for SPH-L720_MDC_Stock_Restore.exe and follow the instructions on that site.
Puts you back at original release and then if you want, you can update through Sprint for the two upgrades you'll need to get back to MF9. You'll have everything back to stock, no counter trips and everything back at zero. I wish they made the ODIN one clicks for MF9, they're so easy.

Thank you! This is what I needed....
Coming from the Galaxy S2, it seemed like there were a million 1-click ODINS. Any idea why the S4 doesn't have these?

Well, I think that answer is complicated because there was some sort of fall out between users here at XDA and people that were part of the SXTP forums or they started their own forums or whatever. I don't really get into those politic things, I just look for resources that are useful and thank all those that are involved. That and there really aren't as many builds coming out for the S4 like there were for the S2 and the S3 for that matter.
Alright so I've been at this for hours and I'm starting to get frustrated and tired. I have a I337M Rogers phone I bought off Kijiji second hand and was already unlocked for rogers. I noticed the "Device Status: Custom" today but to my knowledge I'm not sure if it has been rooted or not in the past. Seeing as I had no way of updating OTA or through Kies I decided to try and fix it by rooting through Odin with CF-Auto-Root and then use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter. After that I tried to re-flash the stock rom I downloaded off here. Sadly that didn't change the Device Status back to "Normal". I then re-rooted, did Triangle Away again but instead went into Superuser app and tapped the permanent unroot option. I then through ES File Explorer deleted the Triangle Away app and the super user app. After that I re-flashed the stock rom again.... Still **** all. As of now I am about to smash this phone to bits. All I want to do is get it back to normal stock so I can bring it in for a repair. ANY help is greatly appreciated.
Have you odin'd the stock firmware and then used triangleaway?

It's alright, I realized after all this crap that I could just factory reset within the settings. That worked so now I am downloading the new OTA update it's also confirming "Official" as the status. Can't believe it was that simple haha.
Cool
I have a Verizon S5 that currently has g900VVRU1B0A8 on it.
Recently the screen has started flashing green and not coming on whrn the power button is pressed.
Im not sure if this is hardware or software so I factory reset it and the issue is still there, maybe not as frequent though.
Do you think it would do any good to upgrade it, can i just odin a new firmware on now, as long as im not going backwards?
If this is a stock factory phone that has never been rooted I would venture a guess that your phone is failing from a hardware standpoint. If it is still under warranty I would replace it before trying any rooting/flashing ... If you want to root it however, DO NOT take the OTA upgrade. That will put you on the latest build but you will not be able to go backwards and root it after taking the update. The version you are currently on can be rooted. And no, you can not just flash a new firmware. If you want to root, you have to follow the steps in the rooting threads and revert back to NCG first to root. Don't flash anything without reading everything thoroughly and understanding what you are doing BEFORE you flash anything.
Oh, its been heavily screwwed with, used to be mine but i gave it to my wife.
Knox is tripped and it says custom on boot.
I took it back to stock when i gave it away....just thinking a updated driver may help.
Been out of the scene for awhile, what are my options?

Just because it says custom on boot doesn't really mean knox is tripped. All my earlier root versions said that without being tripped. Download the Samsung phone info app from the play store. Run that and if knox says 0x0 it is not tripped. It doesn't really matter though if the phone is out of warranty.
