Hey my Atrix is rooted but nothing more, I have titanium backup and was freezing some apps but accidently froze what makes up the android home screen (apps, widgets etc) I can't get back into titanium backup to un-freeze it.
I can still get the lock screen (with my background and everything) and I can go in the browser if I hit the home button a couple times. I want to be able to get it back without re-flashing the phone, any ideas? I don't have the webtop stuff either.
I still need help! (Sorry for making this post, I said something else and wanted to delete it but it wouldn't let me)
maybe download a third party launcher on your computer like launcher pro and
"adb install name_of_launcher.apk" to your phone from your computer
then you should be able to hit home on your phone once it installs and you have that 3rd party launcher in place
If you haven't done this before, you have to have moto drivers and android-sdk on your computer. you may have to search threads on how to do this.
EDIT: or, go to the android market on your computer and install a 3rd party launcher from the web interface. give it a few minutes to download and install on your phone then hit the home button and you should "be" in your 3rd party launcher.
https://market.android.com/
You could also use the sideloading wonder machine. That would be much easier than using the command line to push the app to the phone.

if you hit the search button and start typing in Titanium Backup, it will allow you to launch the app

go to my android apps in play store from your phone and select open Titanium Backup. The TB app will open and you can defrost the program that caused you to lose your homescreen.

Does anyone know how to bypass Google lock on this tablet? My kids created an account and then factory restored it, but have no idea what credentials they used. I am able to run chrome, then install Nova launcher apk and eventually get into settings, however, when I reset the tablet, it still restores with Google lock. This is legit tablet, I have the box and everything.

I could you this! Do you remember what you did to unlock it?
Okay, I feel like this should have been clearer and out there somewhere, but here is how I got passed it.
There are a couple ways to get to the Chrome browser, and that's what you want to do. What I did was type in the login field, select the text, and then select "ASSIST" in the pop-up window.
When the Google App appears, start typing "Chrome." Select the Chrome app when it appears.
In Chrome, search for "Test DPC Apk." Dowload. Open and install. You'll have to give permission to use unkown third-party apps in settings. Once installed, run. Select "Set up device owner." Keep going through all the options. Expect the tablet to restart a couple times. Then go to settings and do a factory reset.

Hey guys I downloaded the google launcher and I don't have any apps in the drawer, going to Nova and touchwiz doesn't have this problem. I've read on other forums similar issues but no fix. Any ideas? Btw nothing is disabled in package pro. Also did a clear data for touchwiz
Same issue here. I just bought a brand new SM-G955U (AT&T). Steps I've done so far with phone:
1) Turned on phone, signed in with google
2) Signed into Samsung account, setup acct, setup gearS3, samsung pay, then I logged out and signed in as a different samsung user (just to match the google acct).
3) Installed all the Google apps, updated everything, finished hours later.
4) Installed Samsung update, approx 45mb
5) Install Google Launcher from app store. Setup all my shortcuts, font-size, wallpaper...
6) Woke up this morning, opened the app drawer using the Google Launcher, shows no apps, just the words "Search Apps"
7) Switched back to TouchWiz, all is ok, working as normal.
8) uninstalled Google Launcher, reinstalled, still no apps in drawer. Also tried to clear the App-Cache, no go.
9) I tried to install the "Pixel Launcher" from the XDA forums, where it did work fine on my Moto Z Play, still no apps in drawer on my GS8+.
There seems to be some posts on other sites related to the same symptoms, but with older devices from about 2-3 years ago. They point to Knox as the culprit, but no step-by-step instructions on how to permenantly fix the issue.
Anyone? Ideas? Please?!

It's not compatible with secure folder. If you enable it, you won't see any apps in the app drawer

You actually have to uninstall it if you've opened it once, not just disable it

I had the same problem and it's not Google, it's Samsung. I realized that only my games were not showing up but I could search them in settings. Turns out they were going to the game launcher. In game launcher settings there is an option to hide apps on home screen and drawer. Well, that is enabled by default. Hope this helps
Hello,
Yesterday, several apps I downloaded through the google play store (sideloaded weeks ago, never had any issues) and one from the amazon app store are grayed out and I get an error when I try opening them that says "SD card not available" and goes on to tell me the SD card where the app installed isn't available. I've never had an SD card in the tablet. I can click "download again," but of course that brings me to the amazon app store.
I have tried re-installing, force stopping and clearing caches, restarting, and updating apps. The weird thing is I can get to the apps if I take another route in ie. if I go on google maps (not affected by issue) and go to a restaurant's website, it opens in Chrome (app affected by issue). Then, Chrome runs normal.
If it makes any difference, the apps that don't work are Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Memrise, Hulu, and Google Sheets.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I had the same problem today with Aquamail. I went to another launcher that I had installed through the Play Store, and uninstalled it from there. Then a reinstall worked. And then the icon for the app appeared in both launchers. I have no idea why it said it was an error with the SD card. There's just some bug with whatever new update they gave us. But that's the only app I had it occur on.

Hmm, I tried uninstalling the app in every way I can think of - including through the play store - and no dice. I have also found that when I uninstall the app, the icon doesn't go away. When I uninstall from the play store and try to uninstall from the home screen, it says the app wasn't found in the list of installed apps. But when I tap to open, it gives the same SD card error.
I'm still really puzzled by the fact this isn't limited to google play apps...does that mean it's something with the OS?

The way I uninstalled was by going to another launcher (total launcher) . You tried that also? I only had it happen with that one app, and it was from the Google Play Store. As far as why it's happening, I really don't know. But it seems to have happened to me today, which makes me think it had something to do with an update either yesterday or today.

Oh no I haven't tried another launcher - didn't know what that was until I just looked.
I also notice that every app I update grays out now. Newly installed apps don't appear on the home screen. However, they all open fine if I open it through the app store or another functioning app. So I'm wondering if I uninstall it through total launcher if it won't even appear on the home screen once re-installed.
How do you install a launcher? I installed one, but when I hit the home button, it brings me back to the default Amazon launcher.

It sounds like this won't help you, but I'll point you to it anyway. Look for the XDA thread called New: Any Launcher, No Root (Launcher Hijack V3). This talks about installing other launchers and hijacking the home button. Sorry that I can't think of anything else. You might try I factory reset and start over, but you may not want to do that, and it may not solve your problem.

Sorry, I didn't see one of your posts. I have also had the problem where anything I install does not show on the fire launcher home screen. But it will show on other launchers. This started yesterday or today for me, so something in one of the updates caused this. If you use another launcher it will probably solve the problem of not seeing the apps on a home screen. But you said it did not help your problem with those that you cannot delete. Evie is a nice launcher that is simple to use, so you might start with that one.
I think I was wrong in what I told you before. I thought I was able to uninstall aquamail which said something about requiring the SD card. But it just happened to me with a different app, and I get that sd card error. So I think I was misled because I uninstalled it and then reinstalled over in the other launcher. Then when I looked back on the fire launcher, the icon was there and it could be clicked. But if you really want to get rid of it and not reinstall, I don't see a way to do that yet. Sorry to have been on the wrong track.

Okay, I learned a little more. I'm not sure if all of these steps are necessary. But I went to settings, apps and games, All, Home Pages. That's the fire launcher. I cleared its cache and data and force stopped. Then when it is launched again, the apps that couldn't be deleted are now no longer showing. However, if you had arranged all the icons in some kind of order, now it is all alphabetical. I also think that newly installed apps do show, but I haven't really done much testing with it yet. I'm mostly sticking with another launcher. So I don't really care about the fire launcher, but once in awhile, I might like to use it. So it's good to see that we can clean these things up.
EDIT: Ignore what I said about it now being alphabetical. It seems to be in the order that apps are added.
Got the same Problem now, but on a new Fire HD8!
Apps were running fine yesterday or a day before and now 3 apps installed from Google Play Store are Grayed out and give the error "SD-Card not Available" and i should insert the same SD-Card... (never had extra any inside). And its only Apps from Play Store. All three Apps are Smarthome apps: Philips HUE, Kasa and Yonomi. The funny Thing.. If I open The Google Playstore and and search my app, then i can either deinstall or open app. And if i open app from there it works...he starts app with no Problem.
Curious this happens to others at the same time...

No, i am using the Stock Launcher and didnt do any changes to that. Besides that i do have the Option to deinstall the Apps and the Apps are still running fine, but only when opened from Play Store.
And i dont think deleting cache or forcing stop of App will do any good as long as the Apps itslf still work.
Yea, there must have been some minor update. He showed me something in system updates, but OS is still 5.6.0.0

I'm talking about clearing cache, data, and force stop of the Home Pages app itself. I'm not talking about the apps that you installed. Try it and see what happens.

Well not exactly the same... In Your Post you say to Stop/End the Launcher.. Thats different to Appstore.
I dont like fondling around with launchers... And i dont want other Launchers than Stock or missing/deleted Icons And Installing other Launcher to fix a problem is no alternative
You are right that I overlooked the part about App Store. I assumed that person was telling you to do the same thing that I did.
You don't have to install other launchers. I was just giving an example of how you could see the apps and do what you needed to do by installing another launcher. I wrote that part before I realized what the "fix" was for the stock launcher. But if you want the original stock launcher to work, you will need to do the steps that I mentioned. Clear cache and data and then force stop for Home Pages, which is the name of the stock launcher

I had the same problem, your advice:

pulled out all the problems, thank you. I had three programs, including PLAY STORE, give that error message and then grey out and become unclickable and unable to be removed. I had did a factory reset three times in two days, and then couldn't get PLAY STORE or any apps downloaded through it to show up on the HOME screen. your suggestion of clearing the "Home Pages" cache and data brought everything working properly. Thank you.

Glad I could help. It's happened to me a couple more times. I learned that the easiest way is just doing a force stop on the Home Pages app. Clearing cache and data means a little more work when the launcher comes back up (it wants you to step through some instructional screens, but I think you can exit out of them) . But if you don't have another launcher to switch to, I don't think you can do the force stop while you are actually using Home Pages as the home launcher. I can't be sure about that because I am rooted now, so the behavior might be different if I was not rooted.
Clearing cache and data probably works for all cases, so maybe that's the way to go. I've made it a little more confusing by adding the detail that I just did in that first paragraph!
Slowly does it

I had this problem. Tried everything to no avail
But I left my fire 10 on all day as I use alexa a lot and the greyed out icons slowly came back.
Restarted the tablet and they where greyed out again but they came back quicker this time.
I know it's a pain to leave it on but something seems to be running slow in the os,
Not a permanent fix but it may help until an update os comes out
I woke up today to find my tablet on the table with the screen on and a weird new lockscreen with some spam about hints on how to use Alexa. I guess my tablet had updated a few minutes before I got up and so the screen was on.
Because my tablet was previously rooted and I disabled the stock launcher and was using Nova, I was unable to get out of the lock screen. Pressing home did nothing nor did swiping from any direction. Funny enough too, the lockscreen was saying how to use Alexa but on my device purchased in Japan, Alexa i completely missing even from a stock install which is just insult to injury.
Anyway, I am looking for a way to remedy this hopefully without a reinstall. My initial thought was to re-root and re-disable the stock launcher giving Nova control again, if possible. However, I am unsure if the usual rooting method works on this version. I can't even re-enable the stock launcher without root (I think) so I guess if I lost root I will have to do a reinstall to get back to stock?
Does yours have your home buttons/top bar? Mine disappeared with the update and now the only way to get back to my home screen is to reboot my fire entirely!

Yes. I was still able to use the device with those functions but it's incredibly inconvenient. Would a reboot help with anything?
I was looking at another thread in the help section, and apparently my nav/notification bars being missing is some sort of compatibility problem with 5.6.2.0 and Nova Launcher.
uninstall nova via adb
I think I figured it out but this won't work for everyone. After opening settings using the pull down notification menu, this reenabled the recent apps which allowed me to open Nova launcher. I rerooted using the offline method here https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd8-hd10/general/hd-10-2017-offline-rooting-t3734860 which thankfully still works. After that I was able to use Titanium backup to freeze the new "Launcher 1.0........".
Everything is now running like before the update.

Not able to disable the stock launcher with the old method, pm disable, once you have root?
EDIT: Was finally able to try some stuff on my tablet. I was able to get root due to your method you linked, which BIG thank you by the way as that method is way less fishy than Kingroot nonsense, and was able to disable the launcher with the "pm disable com.amazon.paladin" command. Seems like they gave their new launcher the name Paladin.
And I'm back to Nova launcher! Thanks so much.

I'm just hoping the new version doesn't make it even harder to root the 8. It's already seeming hopeless. I had updates blocked at the router level. It updated at work.

DeviceSoftwareOTA.apk will update the tablet even if blocked at that level. Amazon uses several IPs which change often. You have to disable that apk or completely removed it. You can try NetGuard firewall. You have to buy the features, but it allows you to block individual IPs. On my HD 8, before I posted a guide on how to disable system apps on 5.4.0.0, at one point I had a dozen or more IPs blocked through NetGuard. It will take time to tinker with all it's features, but I don't regret buying them.
Ugh, me too!
No notification bar.
I'm unclear as to what I can do to remedy this.
I have Nova Launcher running and I am a novice.
Can someone please tell me what to do?
---------- Post added at 03:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:07 PM ----------
OK, update...
So, I restarted a couple of times, and like the third time I restarted, another update applied and a video about "Show Mode" displayed. I sped to the end of it.
I also (previously) turned off "Show Mode" on the lockscreen.
Then, I backed-up my Nova and shared it via Gmail.
Suddenly, the navigation buttons on the bottom appeared and the notification bar showed.
Does that mean it got fixed (somehow) with that orange-screened update that showed upon restarting?
Also, how can I halt any further updates?
When I received the 5.6.2.0 update, I had the same problem of no pull-down menu and no navigation buttons. I had previously installed Google Play, Nova and LauncherHijack. I did not have root. I called Amazon tech support and the guy connected with their MayDay remote assistance program, so I'm sure he could see I was running Google and Nova. We went thru several reboots and checked settings, but he was still stumped. Finally we did a factory reset and reapplied the 5.6.2.0. update and it started working. I have since reinstall Google Play, Nova and LauncherHijack and everything is running fine. My suspicion is that LauncherHijack is blocking the complete install. I read another post that exactly described this issue. In that case the user uninstalled Nova and LauncherHijack and powered off and back on. The installation then continued and when completed, the Show Mode video ran. I contacted the author of LauncherHijack and he said he would check it when he got the update.
Bottom line--if your tablet updates to 5.6.2.0 but the Show Mode video does not appear, the installation has failed/hung before it completed (even if it says the update completed). If you have LauncherHijack installed, try uninstalling it, cycle power and see if that fixes the problem.
I know this won't work for everyone but I was lucky enough to manage to access the Play Store when I noticed this happened on my HD10 and saw that the last app updated was amazon alexa under "Recently Updated" in the "My Apps and Games" section. I hit uninstall and rebooted. Show mode setup then came up normally after reboot and after the setup process for that everything worked normally again. Re-updated alexa and everything is working perfectly now. This worked for me so it's worth a shot but I might have just gotten lucky.
I got the orange screen, rebooted, still had it, tried several times locking and unlocking and kinda fiddling around, from the lock screen pulled the little "tag" icon (swipe for offers I think?)
At some point I was able to get into my email client (type mail) but only had a back button, no home or task buttons. Restarted again, same kind of fiddling around, and somehow it ended up playing the video. Skipped to the end, disabled Alexa when prompted and ended up on my normal home screen with all three nav buttons. Everything seems to be back to normal now. FYI, I'm running Nova, launcher hijack, all the standard Google apps including play store, and I didn't have to uninstall anything. I wish I knew the exact sequence that got it to work, but I'm really not sure... Maybe it wasn't even anything I did? Maybe it was just taking time downloading that obnoxious video?
It is nerve-wracking when something like this comes up knowing that they could push an update that messes everything up and there's basically nothing we can do about it.
I really really hope we can get root on this device

You can just re-root it.

Ah sorry, my device is the HD10. You're right, HD8 doesn't have root.

Why are these devices lumped together when they are clearly very different?

That's just the way the XDA forum was set up unfortunately. Sometimes similar devices are put together in the same forum and the users are expected to be clear about which device they are talking about.
A Solution - At Least For Me!

I found a simple way around it - if rooted.
I had to re-root, but that wasn't too difficult using existing resources.
Through some trial and error I figured out "com.amazon.paladin" is linked to the Alexa/Show Launcher (that's what I'm calling it at this point).
You can disable it with the following via ADB. It should revert back to your default launcher.
I also had Nova Launcher installed, so I disabled the stock launcher (the second pm line below).
Code:
adb shell
$ su
# pm disable com.amazon.paladin
# pm disable com.amazon.firelauncher
