I figured these out on my S2 4.0, but seems in 4.4 everything is changed again.
So under app info there are four storage, Application, SD card app, Data, and SD card data.
I'm guessing
Application > /data/app
Data > /data/data
SD card app > external SD, not sure which folder. Used be able to see the folder in root explorer even though permission is ---------, but now I don't see the folder anymore.
Where does SD card data fall? I think it's /storage/emulated, not sure which folder, maybe /storage/emulated/0/android
Did I get these right?

Thanks, the internal/external sd description in andriod was always vague. Hope google doesn't succeed in killing external sd.

Hey everybody, the Atrix is my first Android device and I havent stopped playing with it since I got it. Im curious to what the difference is between the "Media Area" (manage applications>move to "media area") and the internal phone storage? from what i see, anything i move to the "media area" goes to the internal phone storage.
Also while using Root Explorer i saw 2 folders "/sdcard" and "/sdcard-ext" where ext is my external sd. i checked this after noticing that my ADW launcher backup files were NOT on my sd card. and with root explorer the files were in the "sdcard" folder, which is different from my "sdcard-ext" folder.
Can anyone please explain how or why the files that claim to be saved to my sdcard are actually saved to the other "sdcard" file setup by Android? and the difference between the media area and phone storage, why are applications set to "move to media area" rather than "move to sd card".
There is a storage location option under sd card settings. I haven't played with it yet though.

Your phone has an "internal sd card" due to the way the OS is configured. sdcard-ext, as you already know, is your external SD card. Your "internal card" is divided as follows: 2GB for Android OS and webtop software, 2GB dedicated for app installation, and 11GB for media storage. This 11GB partition is called /sdcard/ in addition to media storage.

So out of curiosity how do you mount the External SD card when you plug your phone into your computer? In my cappy it would just show both SD cards as different drives but it seems when I plug in my Atrix it only wants to show me my internal SD card.
It shows both for me, but sometimes it bugs out and doesn't properly mount the internal storage. A quick reboot fixes it for me.

Thanks for that explanation..but yeah I've never seen both when plugged via usb ...good to know tho. Is there a way to set apps or back ups to the external SD card ?

if you go to sd card & phone storage settings and change the windows media sync storage location to the external sd card both will show if you mount the phone as mass storage.
if you mount it as windows media sync whichever is shown will be the one that shows on the media sync window that comes up on the pc

This file makes internal sd appear as external sdcard. With this file you can NOT use external sd. That means that you can ONLY use internal sdcard.
Put it to /system/etc/ and give it following permissions: rw-r--r--
Music Players recognize the music I have in internal memory but I haven't been able to use it again. It would be nice if both internal and external memory were usable.

Works nicely... just had to figure out how to get it to the phone since I don't have an SD! Borrowed and sorted it out.
Thanks!
update to 2.07 rewrites this file. Had to repeat this process
I just found out with the new rom released (mf9) they have the option for you to move app to sd card. The funny side is when you move your app to sd, it is still setting in your internal phone memory and not to the external is card. Samsung has an internal partition mounted as sd card and moving apps to that partition, still utilizes internal space. I maybe wrong, but I really see this option pointless, if you cant push your apps to external storage.

I may be off base, but I liken it to shortcuts on your desktop to a file or program that is located on an external memory device. Even with the bulk of the space necessary stored externally, there is still some resources required to let the OS know where to find the rest. I do know that the few apps I have, moving them has freed up a couple hundred MB's of space on the device.
I believe it just moves the apk to external but doesn't move the data

COuld you tell me a bit more about this app? How to "pin" it?
You open the app, transfer the folder you want transfered to the external sd card and then you pin it using foldermount. It is really quite easy and the app shows you what to do the 1st time....
I've transferred my Android folder with all the appdata and obb files onto the sd card, a lot of the internal folders too. Haven't had any problems BUT I do have a class 10 samsung 64gb sd card....

Yes, apparently when you browse through 'my files" you can see data file in both ext n int sd. But it should be using only ext sd if you have mounted it correctly. Try unmounting the game data, delete the profile from folder mount and remount it. Remember if you have done something wrong and tell. I can help you.

Yeah, i´ve done that several times alredy. Its still using my internal memory. Correct me if i am wrong but if i am downloading something to the source folder that i have pinned it should automatically go to the destination folder and don´t use my internal memory, correct?

When you use folder mount, you are prompted to transfer to destination folder and if u hit yes then it will be transferred. It works perfectly on mine. Maybe u should try formatting the sdcard n try again.

The files are there, there´s nothing wrong with the sd card, but they are also in the internal memory. I wish they weren´t so i could clear some storage in my internal memory. Then first of all, unmount the game data in folder mount and delete that profile. it will prompt you to tranfer file to source. Hit no ( let it be on extsd). And then see whether the game file is still in the internal sd ? Or else try to mount a new game data present or put some game data on sd and try to mount it and note the amount of free space. after mounting, check the amount of free space. It should be different.

Previously, because I didn't have an actual microSD card, the system created a /sdcard directory as an emulated, internal SD card. Now that I've installed an actual card, my data in /sdcard is still there. How do I migrate it over to my actual physical card?
Use a file explorer. For example; THIS
I think you're confused. /sdcard is the system storage path for the built in sd memory. It is not an emulated sdcard.
When you add insert a microsd card, it's mounted at /storage/extSdCard .
They are two entirely separate storage locations.

Not manually, no. some apps allow it others don't. If you want to move apps and data there, the safest method is to go into each app in application manager and click the move to sd buttons.
Also beware that kitkat prevents most 3rd party apps from using the external sd card by default. search for kitkat external sd card write fix to find how to fix this (need to be rooted).

You should only transfer/copy those items, folders, files, videos,
pictures and mp3s which you personally have added or created.
The other files or folders you see in your internal sd storage (sdcard)
were created by the phone and created by certain apps which you
have installed and should not be moved, transfered or deleted.
Good luck!
