YouTube version 5.18 puts back 1080p and 1440p for all.
(Thanks very much to @jruasap, he's the one who uploaded the APK!)
Instructions:
1. Settings>Application Manager> YouTube> Uninstall Updates
2. Install https://www.dropbox.com/s/k1z2y730k9cmqdo/youtube-5.9.0.10.apk
(make sure allow installation from unknown sources is checked in Security)
3. Uncheck Auto-Update on YouTube's Play Store Page.
4. BEFORE OPENING clear YT's data in the Application Manager.
4. Enjoy and hit "THANKS" if I helped!
INSTRUCTIONS FROM THIS POINT ARE COURTESY OF @Syntax323
If you have the option for 1080 and 1440p, it does work! Just because it doesn't switch instantly does not mean it doesn't work.
Youtube changed, they don't switch instantly anymore. It buffers in the background, and while watching it will switch automatically.
Though, that is ONLY if your connection is fast enough. Just because you're on 5ghz, doesn't mean your download speed is fast. That is just a faster radio frequency your router is putting out.
You have to realize you're trying to stream 1080 and 1440p which is very high detail, meaning the file sizes are huge. So, if your download speed isn't fast enough to download it/buffer while watching than it isn't going to switch.
This is a little 'trick' I do to 'force' it to go I to 1080/1440p whenever I want.
"Forcing" LG G3 into 1440p:
http://youtu.be/e9aIf7Uq378
Given, my download speed is 25-35mbps.
Do a speed test, and post. You're results. If you're only getting like 8-10 chances are it isn't gonna buffer 1440p. Wont be able to catch up.
Okay, here is 2nd Solution if my first post didn't work for you. Only do this if my steps did NOT work for you.
Move on to step 5 ONLY if 1080p/1440p are still not showing for you.
5. Only do the following steps if the above does not work for you still.
6. Download YouTube 5.9.0.13.apk from here -> https://www.dropbox.com/s/qh23f5yaajv5dlh/com.google.android.youtube-5.9.0.13.apk?dl=0
7. Now unlike the above DO NOT uninstall updates.
8. Once finished downloading, go ahead and open it and install it, again do NOT uninstall prior versions/updates of youtube.
9. Once installed, like above do NOT open.
10. Go to settings -> Apps -> All -> YouTube -> clear data
11. Open YouTube, find 4k video (GoPro has some particularly dazzling videos) You should now have 1080p/1440p again.
12. Enjoy and hit "THANKS" if I helped, and thank @Syntax323!
Didn't work. Not sure why. I uninstalled and installed the download. Nothing changed. Still 720p max on a known 1440p video

Hey, for everyone its not working for.
Follow steps, it will work.
1. Uninstall updates
2. Install APK in link from the OP
3. Don't auto update....dur
4. BEFORE opening the app, go into settings -> Appear -> All -> YouTube -> Clear cache -> Clear Data
For some reason clearing cache and data after installing the 5.9.0.10 and before running it fixes it. I had same problem and everything I did wouldn't work. Even clearing cache and data after I ran it didn't work. Have to install it, than clear, than run it and you will have 1440p back.

Well, this only sort of worked. I was able to get 1080p and 1440p options to appear, but choosing them does nothing. The videos, even those with 1440p in the description, still play at 480p or 720p. It's like YouTube is going out of its way to keep the UHD videos from being played.

No, that's good! It works, trust me!
What its doing is trying to load it. 1 video in 1440p is very large. Your download speed on internet had to be fast to be able to play it. Even 1080p. So even when you click it, its going to go to the closest resolution to play so you can continue to watch while its loading the resolution you selected.
When you load a video, select 1440p, than drag the little thing to the beginning of the video so it starts from beginning.
Trust me, 1080p and 1440p are working for you, they are just buffering in background.
Or, after you select it, it will switch to it automatically when it buffers enough. Just have to have fast speeds on wifi or lte.
That's good. So it worked for you.
You better have unlimited data if you try using LTE. The videos are MASSIVE.

I disagree with you. It's not working. In the past, when I've chosen a higher resolution video, YouTube immediately paused for a second or two while it buffered. It's not doing that. When I click on 1080p or 1440p the video just keeps playing. Also, if I go back to the settings to choose the resolution again it shows that I have 480p or 720p playing, not the high resolution I wanted and clicked on previously.. Furthermore, there is no visible change in resolution, something that I was able to see in the past. I truly believe YouTube has simply disabled the ability to watch videos above 720p - at least via mobile devices.

You want me to take a video of me showing you what I mean, and how I play 1440p on my g3? Cause it does work. Its worked for 10-15 others I've helped as-well.
All of them said same thing as you, but it doesn't switch instantly anymore. It does what Netflix does now. You know, when you see the quality changing... when its pixelated than it gets hd without even pausing...

If your download speed is not that fast, you'll never get it to play. Its just the way it is now. I'm getting 35mbps down so it plays without a hitch for me.

Here is a screenshot I just now took playing in 1440p the Gopro video I posted above.
Mine seems to switch to 1080p/1440p easier in landscape than it does in portrait for some reason though.
Also, if YouTube disabled it, you wouldn't be getting the 1080p/1440p option at all.
Its not like we are doing a hack, or modified apk. There is nothing crazy going on here, its not a glitch. Its straight from there own app .
Plus, 1440p still works on pc, and other phones np. I'm guessing it was a bug that is happening here.
They wouldn't disable it for the LG G3, when LG has been a partner with Google making the Nexus' and main selling point of this phone is it's screen.
So, its not disabled. Just has a hard time playing if not on a fast/stable connection.

You must be the lucky one. And I appreciate your effort. But it just won't work. I have 1080p and 1440p as options, but clicking on them doesn't change to that resolution. It stays at the original lower resolution. Honestly, though, it's not a big deal for me. I don't watch YouTube videos all that often and watching at the highest resolution isn't a priority for me.

Dude, my apologies. It is working. I now see what you mean by it buffering in the background while continuing to play the lower resolution video. So, here I am, owning a phone that has an OS designed by google, trying to click on links for youtube videos "also owned by google" and I get (This video is not available on mobile)
WTF google. I know that I can choose to "open in browser" and wish me luck trying to fullscreen it.
why is the native youtube for android so limited? Half of the new, popular videos are unwatchable.
is there a way around this?
I have the same exact problem and I think it sucks too. You would think since they own Youtube there would be awesome integration via the mobile site or the application but I have found they absolutely suck on both accounts. I either get the "video not available" error, or it just takes FOREVER to load on the application (which it didn't at all on my TP2). Jeez...
works fine for me, both as flash on the site and linking to the youtube app
I believe it has something to do with licensing maybe? I am going to go out on a limb and say it was a music video or something? If so, the only logical thing I can think of is that they do that so you aren't tempted to just keep replying the song instead of buying it?

have you tried the "hex edited flash" ?
I don't think it is that... some videos are just not meant for the app...
The thing that sucks is that it clears cache EVERY time you scroll back in a youtube video.
That needs to get fixed ASAP. Such an obvious flaw. I can't even watch a video in the app anymore. I use the browser, which the controls suck on as well.

I used to get those messages ALL the time, but after updating the app in the market, I've never gotten it again. Like go into the market, and download youtube.
Do the videos that you can't watch on mobile have ads before the actual video on desktop? I'm guessing some of the stuff is copyright material and are ad-driven. The mobile app doesn't display ads so maybe thats why it doesn't show.
And yea, it does suck, but i kinda understand how it would be this way. If they started showing ads to make the videos available on mobile, then people without "unlimited" data plans like new iphone users on the new ATT plans will complain that its eating up additional data, and a whole different round of complaints will go around.
Can't please everyone all the time.
Then they should just say it's due to ads. Or add a little confirmation box: "You must view an ad before you can see this video. This may cause you to incur extra data usage charges. Do you wish to continue?".
I somehow suspect it's due to some licensing crap, though. The MAFIAA don't want to accept that everything's a computer these days.
its not due to any ads. mobile viewing vs. desktop computer based viewing carry different licenses for content. there is nothing wrong with the app in regards to this.
when you upload videos there is an option to make that content available on mobile devices....
It depends on the video, and your internet connection.
I've found that if you retry to play a video, sometimes the 3G doesn't connect fast enough or load up enough of the video in time that the app likes, and it just spits out that generic message. You will probably have better luck on 4G or WiFi.
Also, some music videos and some other videos are restricted due to licensing issues. Majory being music videos though.
Just open it in the browser and hold your finger on the video for a second. You should see two boxes show up, one will make it full screen. I rarely even use the app any more because it's quicker for me to just pull up the page.
Same here, the page seems to just work better than the app. Hate the fact that forward/rewind wipes the cache, very annoying.
I was reading this article on gottabemobile.com About XDA porting the Netflix HD app to the Galaxy Nexus..and I thought, umm why don't I try that on my Note....Installed the APK from their link...OMG BEAUTIFUL. I started up the New Star Trek Movie, awesome, the old Star Trek, awesome again...the interface is a bit small as its made for tablets I guess, but just pull your stylus out and there is no problem here!
On one small note. I used Chrome to Phone to send myself the APK link. After I got the APK link I also got bombarded with spam links via Chrome to Phone on my notification bar. I had to uninstall Chrome to Phone after 12 notifications about "Hot Girls" I'm guessing this is almost like uncontrolled. pop ups on the server that was serving the APK file. Hopefully I can re-install it with-out the spam, as I use Chrome to Phone a lot!
Edit:
Just connected it to my LCD...it does not look like 1080p when compared to running a youtube 1080p video
Well darn...
I actually can't stand the interface. Without the stylus it's very hard to navigate. Very hard. I wish I could switch it back but still keep the high res video.
The normal netflix app on the Note was also very small as I remember from the handful of times I used it before I installed this APK. Though the actually interface does seam just a tad different.
OP are you sure about that?
I was under the impression that Netflix HD only will stream 720p content to OMAP equipped phones at the moment.
I tried the APK on my Note and movies look exactly the same as the regular Netflix App, still looking standard definition to me.
I have no way to confirm that it is actually playing HD. They look great to me. Though I must admit, I only used it a handful of times previously. The APK works and it's functional. I'll try and use the HDMI Out Cable and see if there is any improvident....

don't discount this app just yet. It definitely plays video better than the app i installed it over. I watch a lot of space docs on netflix, and they have looked terrible because of the black "blockiness" problem with the note. This version of netflix looks amazing on the note compared to the one i had downloaded from the market. this fixes one of my only disappointments with my phone!
and it also gives me hope that the video issues can be fixed by software alone!

Hi guys,
So whenever I'm watching a video with the YouTube app in HD it constantly stop play, loads, then plays, then loads then play.....you get the idea. At first I though it was a bandwidth issue but if I'm on other WiFi connections that I know are faster than mine I have the same issue. If I take it off of HD mode it runs fine. Has anyone else experienced this and is there a known fix for it? Or is this maybe a WiFi hardware issue with the N10? It sucks not being able to watch YouTube videos on my N10. ya mine just keeps trying to load every like 30 seconds, its horrible. Issue only happens in HD.
To be honest, I'd be more willing to peg this issue (which I've seen as well from time to time) to the Nexus 10's rather underwhelming Wi-Fi performance. It's the one thing about Android that always really bugs me-- of all the devices I've owned, the iPad/iPod Touch (gifted that one though to my roommate) have had the fewest issues with Wi-Fi. And it's bizarre. There's no reason it should happen, but I've seen the gauntlet of problems (including everyone's favorite "Avoiding poor connection").
installed smarttube app from play store and no issue withe the same video. no problems with skype video. only youtube - even just 10 feet from router with every other app rocking it.

It's probably partly because of your connection speed and partly because of the way buffering works on the native Android app, which seems badly done.
Generally speaking, the native Youtube app for Android is pretty badly done. It doesn't let you choose the exact resolution you want like on the Flash player, ie 360p, 480p, 720p, or 1080p, only HD or not. It will automatically start downloading in HD if it thinks your connection is fast enough and won't let you switch to non-HD until after it has buffered in HD and starts playing a bit. It doesn't let you order a channel's videos by popularity, though you can get around that by going to the website, ordering by popularity, and then clicking on the videos from there. It will buffer a video, but if you switch to another app and then come back, it will often randomly lose that buffering, meaning you have to wait while it downloads all over again.
It is amazing how bad this app is after so many years of being out.

By far and away though, the biggest annoyance for me (after the ones you listed) was introduced more recently. Why, oh why, Google, would you not let me disable watch suggestions? They never work, especially with my subscriptions!

Awesome explanation! Thank you.....yes, it to drives Mr nuts that after so many years this app is still so buggy. Patience can only go so far .
Well at least I know now that I'm not the only one with these issues. Thanks again!

Sometimes I know the connection is okay, but YouTube just likes to be a jerk. It happens to me occasionally, but something I've dealt with.
Generally, I download the YouTube video and watch it (or watch it on my train ride later!). Usually those kind of apps are helpful even if you have a slow connection so you don't get that stuttering when trying to watch a video.
I've heard some good things about this YouTube Downloading app. Personally, I haven't tried it; I use TubeMate from the amazon app-store.
In a different way, this should help.

Thank you for the suggestions, ill give them a shot! cheers!
Just installed this apk from android police and type a search for 1440P videos. Go in the to settings for the video and switch the resolution and you'll now see an option for 1440P. Watched a video on it and it looked very detailed and crisp. Crystal clear. Enjoy!

Also here is a beautiful video playing in 1440P. The detail is incredible. I appreciate this screen more and more. Just compared the video on my wife's iPhone screen compared to the g3 and it really blows it away.

You need to make sure that the youtube app version is on 5.9 if it is. On a video that supports 1440p/2k you need to click on the 3 dots top right of the video and then click on the cog. Should allow you to change it to 1440p
With the display and the sound on the G3 I could actually imagine watching a movie on it - which I've never bothered to do on any mobile before. It's absolutely GREAT!

thank you, this basically confirmed my suspicions there is zero different between 1440 and 1080 on this screen size at least between the G2 and G3 as I played both next to each other today and out of the 5 people in my house I asked, none of them could tell a different including me. I think im going back to 1080p with 540dpi as I didn't notice any difference between that or the 1440p w/ default DPI. Battery life was just improved enough that I liked it. Thanks for posting the new apk!

I was tempted to try the dpi modification but was a bit hesitant to. I was under the assumption most apps don't work properly and widgets on the home screen get cut off and just don't appear to look right. Maybe I'll try it. What do you guys recommend? Does it really make THAT much of a battery difference? How much more SOT do you get by making this modification?

Sorry for the late response was in a bourbon coma.
So as long as you don't go down below 530, you *SHOULD* have zero problems. I ran mine at 540, but I left it at 530 first to see as that was what most say is the "breaking" point for most apps while keeping them on screen. ALL "LG" themed apps I tried worked fine, contacts, phone, messaging etc. I run Buzz Launcher w/ Zooper, and the only issue I had was with Naxos Flat "Circle Clock w/ Weather and batt stats showing the circle background wrong. I am sure if I had removed this widget, then reconfigured it most likely would have worked.
As for the battery test, I dunno I "felt" the difference but since I didn't really use any formal testing before I sent back my sprint version I don't want to tell you it does or doesn't. It "appears" to me it makes a big difference as I am usually recharging after a single movie streaming over LAN w/ ES File Manager played with Archos Video Player. Now I can watch a couple of movies. That doesn't really satisfy my "scientific" mind and it shouldn't yours either. ;^)
I think though what I will do is just run a test tonight when I get home, then tomorrow put the phone back to 2k and default dpi and re-run those same exact tests. I'll take advice as I have never "tested" battery consumption on a smartphone before. I figured I would just do a few different tests of playing movies. I don't "game" on my phone but if you have an opinion on a good one to test with I could run that too. Any experience with battery tester from Antutu, I am going to check that out also.

You won't too much of a battery difference because the display is still pushing that many pixels no matter what resolution you set. You'll likely see some performance improvements but that's probably it.

I just tried watching a few gaming vids on 1440p and its absolutely gorgeous!

Can you cite a source please I want to read it and see how they explain that, because this statement makes zero sense to me. Regardless if the panel is still pushing the native amount of pixels the amount of energy(power) needed to power the panel lowers. You can view this by the heat generated on your CPU/GPU using different resolutions as the device may still use the default panel the smaller "image" size even with required scaling will still use less power then a full size image at native. Same goes with CPU.

I'm not too sure either. I've been viewing threads on this for quite a while now and that's the general consensus. You can find quite a few threads here on XDA with ppl discussing this.

I've read them none of them cite sources either, its all people talking conjecture. I'll do some actual testing and post results here. For example a lot of people are saying "From my past experience", that usually equals "I haven't tested it, but take my word for it". Maybe the results will surprise me and show there is minimal battery life change, but I doubt it
EDIT: So I played around with the AnTuTu test suite's battery tester. Seems legit enough that it should give us a good baseline set of results to compare. I put my phone back to default right now and I am charging it to 100%, then Ill run the test. Should take a couple hours at least. Then I'll switch back to 1080/540dpi and do the same battery test with a full charge again and see what the results are. Probably won't be done until tomorrow morning my time but if they get done sooner (Pacific timezone) ill post them up here.
I'm half tempted to restore factory to do this testing to make it even more a set of baseline results that most VZW users can guess they will have. Right now though im running Greenify Paid w/ Xposed plugins and other things etc. Really wish we had unlocked bootloader so I could just back my stuff up but alas, I find QA/Testing fun so I dunno, I might, might not reset.

try clearing data and cache on youtube app, then re-installing. mine works fine.
Import this little profile here to tasker
PLEASE TRY IT WITH QHD
Follow the steps within profile
Beta 2 will theorically will let you run strictly on 60hz and will run you back to 120 whenever you open an app that you desire to be refreshing at 120
Needed
Tasker
Patient
Knowledge on how to run adb commands until there's root.
If it isn't being force on let's say Gmaps but it is set to 120hz most likely it will drop down to 60 to save battery. And this can happen with other apps as well.
Please enjoy and report back.

Does it even run smoothly on pixels? It never ran smoothly on any of my phones, especially when zooming out during navigation, pathetic.
Has anyone successfully used this yet? I'm more interested in tying it to the power mode like high performance or optimized. Is that possible?

Yes it runs smoothly on pixel 4
I'm using this and working very well. Running all apps besides video playback apps and gmaps at 120hz.
Takes a second or 2 for refresh rate to change but I think this is a great idea in general, app controllable refresh rate

It should
Download the profile and import to tasker
Pick which apps you want to run in each and you're good to go.
That being said I installed kodi and it seems like 120hz.
Easy to tell 120 from 60.
I don't think worth running video playback apps in 120 as video won't run in 120 anyway.
I don't understand how to import this into Tasker. When I click on the link from my phone, it doesn't give me the option to open it with Tasker. Is there any way you can post the actual file here?

When you click link in thread, click import and then click yes, this should open in tasker. Then you click on choose apps and pick which apps to run in 120 and rest go to 60.
You have installed tasker right?
I don't think this is working at all for me. There's a noticeable difference when I enable/disable the setting manually regardless of whether the Tasker profile is applying (which it says it is).

Someone said it does and they're wrong. It seems to run at about 15-30fps, just verified on my Pixel 4XL.
Places where this is evident are any in-app animations, for example if you tap on your blue location dot, it will animate to fill the screen with blue. Or if you search a location and tap its card, it will animate to pull the card up. Or you can just fling the map around. There's no way anybody with decent vision can confuse this with 60fps let along 120fps.

Hi Kev,
first of all thank you for the thread's and tasker profile regarding the 120Hz tingz!
The 120Hz experience on the S20 line imho is ULTRA disappointing!
Not the Display itself but more the way stupid Sammy implemented it Software wise.
First disappointment, the limitation of only FHD+
but this was known even before the S20 line was officially announced so I actively decided to look pass that. Even though most people say FHD+ is enough and you don't see any pixels or whatever, I have to say coming from a S10 with a smaller display and and higher dpi, I do notice how much softer the image quality on the S20+ is! It's noticeably less sharp.
The Second disappointment no one warned me about is the fact that half of the apps revert back to 60Hz!!!
No one told me this! and I ****ing hate this. Maybe I was naive, maybe it's the fact that I had no experience with a phone that has a high refresh rate display, but to my understanding if I set my phones display to 120Hz, everything, the UI and all apps would be displayed @*120Hz! But no! this already is like on the leaked Firmware Screenshot wich shows the "Dynamic" option in the middle! it's not locked.
Just shows again how important root is. The ability to take control of the device you own and not giving control to stupid Sammy dev's...
Your method with tasker works fine, but I had no experience with tasker prior and I only using it during it's trial period. After the trial ends, I'm not going to buy the full version.
Is there maybe a adb command that can globally set the phone to a fixed 120Hz refresh rate? Since I don't need a per app selection.
again thank you for this tasker profile so far.
Thanks for the profile! But there is one issue: it's works only once for my S20, then after launching few apps refresh rate drops to 60Hz ((( Even rebooting my phone doesn't help (
