[Q] Custom recovery and ROM on more recent devices? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
When I first got this phone, there were problems with the phone being locked in such a way that it couldn't be flashed with a new recovery/ROM.
I have looked through the various subs, but it's not obvious to me, so I wanted to ask. Is it possible to flash S4's now with custom recoveries and ROMs?
Thanks in advance,
Sebastian

Its possible.
Its easy.
There are lots of options to choose from.

any chance you could point me in the right direction? Last time I tried (admittedly, some time ago), there were zero options because everything was locked down by samsung.

i'm moving this to the Q/A forum.
Please do not post in the dev forums unless it is directly development related.

For your info, I have a Canadian variant and I can confirm that the bootloader is already unlocked.
If any dev/themer need a dump, let me know.....

You said i337. That's the US AT&T version. If you have the Canadian variant, you have the i337M.

My bad,
I used to have the i747m S3 using AT&T ROM so I made confusion between ATT S4 variant (i337) and Canadian Rogers one (i337M).
bootloader a side, the only problem would be the dev of Omega giving permission for sharing said port. I know he didn't give permission for Omega on AT&T Note 2. If you did port it, you can use it yourself but you couldn't share with the community.

If you have any programming experience, or even if you have none, Android is a great place to start, and porting roms will give you the necessary skillset to do almost anything, especially if you have to do kernel work. It's not super hard to do, and you're on the best informational resource there is. I doubt Omega would allow it to be ported, but as RMXO said, you can do whatever you want as long as you don't try to release it and take credit for other people's work.

[Q] Can i root a samsung galaxy s4 MG1 version?

Hey guys
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Canadian model # SGH-l337M
Baseband version ending in MG1.
Im wondering wether this is FULLY rootable? I am a complete noob to android as i just picked the phone up yesterday. Coming from and iphone 4s, and 5. Anyways i updated the phone accidently, and now its on this version. I read somewhere that some versions are rootable, and unrootable? Anyways I can still return the phone as i havent even stuck the sim card in the phone yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also wondering if there is a good daily site/blog you guys could recommend? I used to visit www iclarified dot com.
Thanks

Incorrect.
That guide is for every build except MF3. Step 2 (after reading step first, of course) contains the link to rooting your I337M.
This will work, as I've rooted MG1 with these steps in the past:

[Q] jlftte or jlftexx?

How do I know if my phone is jlfte or jlftexx?
I have a:
Galaxy S4 i9505 16gb
Baseband: I9505XXUFNC4
Android: AOSB 4.4.2 (I have flashed the jlfte version but have problem with the camera)
up!
Jflte is the modelnumber for the galaxy s4. Jfltexx is the International model of the galaxy s4.
Different carriers have different modelnumbers because of their lte frequencies. All of them have the Snapdragon 600. If you no carrier restricted phone then you have the jfltexx
Alternativly you could dial *1234#
Gesendet von meinem GT-I9505 mit Tapatalk
And a jflte ROM is for every snapdragon S4. So for the jflteatt, jfltevww, jfltetmo and of course jfltexx. It's called a unified build. The jfltexx is just the i9505. So the device you own. You can flash jfltexx ROMs and jflte ROMs. They both should work.
Me Gusta!
@Me Gusta and @benni2903 thanks guys!

I never changed the ROM, I'm using the original. This is the first time i'm trying to change de ROM.
I installed Root from JflteXX and it worked. But i know that i can brick my mobile if i install the wrong version of TWRP.

Yeah, im 99.9% sure you've got a jfltexx. The VJ is just your modem. Just go ahead and flash jfltexx twrp.
Also, the i9505 is nearly, I repeat, nearly unbrickable. Almost everything can be fixed by using Odin.

I installed in mine the I337MVLUFNE1, but it hhas all the bloatware from Bell. (And I didn't see the knox, but when I rooted my device the SU told me that I have it, but it disable knox)
Really think that the difference between FNE1 and FNC1 is the free-bloatware and the kies one (wth it), because in samfirmware says it doesnt have kies.
I'm searching for a reason too, but I don't know if that's the real difference, im just guessing.
My S4 company is TELCEL (MX) i337m, and running a rooted Canada Bell (black edition) (FNE1). haven't tried the FNC1
PS Sorry for my english
hi there,
I believe the last few letters refer to the baseband. and yes it most certainly will have the insidious knox

hello,
what I did with my S4 is to flash the NC1 modem while still on 4.2.2, then I installed a custom ROM based on kitkat. this way you can have the latest android OS while keeping away from all the #@!# that comes with official releases.
this is where I found all the information I needed to get things done: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2687289
good luck!

Help guys :)

Hello, i just wanted to ask a silly question
Is it possible to flash i9505G custom roms to my ordinary i9505? Or will brick my phone doing that
