If you are in I9500 you are in a knox free bootloader , you can do whatever you want , root , install custom rom , go back to stock ..no knox .
Just do not upgrade the bootloader , no stock upgrade , no OTA
Towelroot does not work on exynos processors, stay on 4.2.2 use stock base roms if you like the stock TW look

Anything you want ....cm , tw any version 4.2.2 , 4..3 , 4.4.2 , 4.4.4
Root , install a custom recovery and flash.....
If you want to go back to stock use only 4.2.2 stock roms so you do not upgrade the bootloader ( preferably the same one you have now) , backup before you do anything , do not forget to back up also your efs folder

1: Try it and find out. I can't answer this as I have a i9505 and rooted it using Towelroot.
2. The EFS folder is where the device's IMEI and other relevant configuration data are stored. If the data is corrupted either a nandroid backup or a copy of the EFS folder contents should restore the device to working order.

Hi,
You can use cf root or flash (odin) philz touch and once there go to Philz setting and chose re-root system
The efs folder is not backup by nandroid it must be done separately you can do it with philz recovery Backup and restore/custom backup and select efs or use apps like Galaxysim unlock , it has an option to do it what is is well describe by @Strephon Alkhalikoi in the post above this , once again towelroot does not work in exynos S4

Thanks for your time! Am familiar with cf auto root, but Philz one seems easier as I also get recovery with it, can u link me to Philz recovery and root?Again huge thanks, am not using towel root?

But how can I restore efs? Sorry am new here i know all about xperia rooting stuff and flashtool not familiar with Samsung and odin

@MAX 404: I'm running TWRP. Why then do I have "efs.info" and "efs.ext4.win" as part of my nandroid? Or is EFS actually hidden and what I got from the backup was only the files I could see?

That is easy , Galaxysimunlock and philz will do it for you provide you have the backup Both app will create a folder where it will put the backup( galaxysimunlock or clockworkmod) , make a copy and save it in the pc, when you ask to restore they will go and look for it in those folders and do everything ,
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spocky.galaxsimunlock&hl=en
there are different ways and apps but for me this 2 are the easiest ones

Not an expert on twrp , maybe they do include efs in their back up , which is brilliant , on philz is not part of the regular nandroid , you have to request it from the custom backup section.

Hi
first part :
Philz thread , he recently decided not to support any more his project so in the future you may have to move on to other recoveries like twrp , but at the moment is still valid and up to date

a little guide wrote by another user , is valid also for 4.2.2
second part yes BUT efs has to be restore if only there is problems with imei , wifi ....if not is not necessary nandroid is enough

Neither am I apparently.
The EFS backup in TWRP was only about 13KB, which is way too small apparently. I just downloaded Samsung Tool and used it to make a proper EFS backup. The final result was roughly 13MB in size, which seems more like it.

[Q] Problem creating a TWRP Custom Recovery with Odin

Hi everyone. I have followed the YouTube video by Chris Nacca (http://youtu.be/Ov6BXOu7SwA)that uses TWRP 2.5 custom recovery (file: openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.2-jfltexx.tar) on my unlocked GT-i9505 S4 using Odin 3.07. Unfortunately, despite the message from Odin indicates all worked fine (<ID:0/004> RES OK !!), on rebooting my phone back into Recovery mode, I am greeted with the Android character telling me there is an Error and then "dying" and saying "No Command".
The phone isn't bricked as I can move the highlight bar through the various menu options at the top left-hand side of the screen and reboot back via my stock ROM but clearly the Custom Recovery hasn't been installed correctly and, despite the Message screen in Odin showing <OSM> All threads completed. (success 1 / failed 0).
I have a rooted and unlocked GT-I9505 with a baseband reading as: I9505ZHUZME1. Anyone got any ideas or advice as to what may have gone wrong as if I can't sort this out I can't move to a custom ROM. :crying:
Many thanks in advance, Jim

Thanks for your reply. Being new to Android, am I correct in assuming that I merely download the last .tar file from the page you provided the link to and install it as I did the TWRP custom recovery file using Odin? Am I right in believing this will leave me with my Stock ROM but I can then do a Nandroid Backup and move to a custom ROM from there when I am ready?

the file extension will be .tar use it on PDA at odin and flash it
then u can take a backup of the entire current firmware and keep it to safe place like PC Hard drive and move to ROMS

Thanks. One (hopefully) last question: The link you provided has both *.zip and *.tar.md5 files. I presume you mean I should use the latter, and do I need to remove the last portion (.md5) to make it a *.tar file or use it as is in Odin 3.07?

Sorry, back again. I have done as you suggested (twice) and still can't get my phone to install a custom recovery. While Odin once again reports a successful install (as it did when installed the TWRP custom recovery), when I reboot back into custom recovery mode after installing PhilZ Touch custom recovery (as indicated by the blue text on the start-up screen), I no longer get the dying Android figure as I did when installed TWRP custom recovery, but the screen goes to a black, vibrates and then the phone reboots normally (which is a relief). So, needless to say - I am stumped. Can you or anyone else offer any suggestions?

U can download the stock firmware from ur device I9505 will be abt 1.4 gb
once downloaded extract in a folder then flash using Odin pda - need to select .tar here again as u did b4 for recovery flashng etc
This will flash a Firmware and u will have stock phone unrooted
from there reset the device from ur phone which will remoce all the bad files etc and all the data also from ur Internal phone memory
after that as told Root and install recovery hope fully this will work without issues

Okay, got all that. I am surprised that you can flash stock firmware back on to your phone as I was under the impression you needed a custom recovery installed before you could add a custom ROM. Is that purely a "safety" precaution and I could bite the bullet and install a custom ROM now (should I be silly enough to try)? I do have may SYSTEM, APPS and USER data back up. Obviously I will loose everything on my phone doing this but can I expect that I can restore the APPs and USER data from my existing backup but not attempt to do this will the system files in fear of recreating the current problem?

Yes u can flash stock with Odin no need to install recovery for that..Custom recovery is needed mostly to flash custom Roms more or less u can say
and this method is 100% safe as long as u do properly
make sure u have 60% plus battery on the phone dont disconnect while its running / installing
and dont re install backup u have taken b4 with system files etc myte create plm
rather use titanium / mybackup pro app just to backup messages/ apps etc and save it else where or SD card for later use

Hi, I have done as suggested and flashed the stock ROM and performed a hard Reset. I didn't expect the flashing of the ROM would leave all my apps and screens as they were. Is that normal? I did confirm that the baseband number had changed, which is has. I then moved on to install the root as suggested and all seems to have worked well with the red Android figure appearing. Unfortunately SuperSU is complaining of not having the necessary binary files and Root Checker doesn't seem to be able to determine whether I have rooted phone or not as it just sits there complaining that my system seem slow. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi, yes I tried SU from play store - same issue. I also reset from the Backup and Reset option on the phone which did delete all the apps etc so to the best of my knowledge, I followed all the steps as described by you and on the various pages you gave me links to.
I have just tried SuperUser. It noted the binaries were old but when it attempted to update, said it "failed" to gain root access. Despite getting the confirmatory Red Android after the root process, I now wonder if it didn't go entirely as planned despite trying 2-3 times....?

[FIX] Corrupt EFS - When downgraded from 4.3 to 4.2.2

TD:LR Get back to Stock ROM for your country and then restoring EFS the backup will help in getting back your IMEI.
Click to collapse
Requirements
1. Stock country ROM + Rooted if necessary
2. Any EFS backup
3. Same tool used in (2) to restore it back.
Situation
Currently I was 4.3 XXUGML2 ArchiDroid V1.7.3. Faced a lot of issues with any 4.3 ROM i tried. So I though I will go back to 4.2.2 OXAME7 [EFS v1] which was real stable for me. I flashed 4.2.2 again via Odin. After successful boot I had lost my IMEI where the code was generic 0049***. Here are the things I tried to do:
1. I had efs.tar.gz file which I had created when I was on 4.2.2 before flashing 4.3 with help of kTool. I tried to restore the same with help of the same app, but that did not work at all.
2. I had made EFS backup via custom backup and restore of Philz CWM Recovery. But that backup was in Internal SD. After I had flashed 4.2.2 from 4.3 with Odin the internal was completely wiped. So I had lost my 2nd and final alternative backup.
3. Tried to flash XXEMG4 modem which is actually EFS v2 modem, but that too didn't solve the issue.
Now why did this happen?
I am not sure, but my guess was that this happened because the 4.2.2 ME7 ROM had EFS v1 path whereas the 4.3 ROM was EFS v2 path. Any other possible reasons?
The Fix
As a last resort
1. I downloaded the Stock ROM for my country (India) which is XXEMH4 via odin --> No IMEI yet
2. Tried to restore the EFS via kTool again.
3. Profit + hefty amount of relief.
It was a great relief for me to see the IMEI back and thought of sharing it here. Hope this information will be helpful to others. :good:
Edit:
I think this method too would have helped, but did not bump into this thread earlier: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531221

I'm not sure.. But flashing stock ROM and then restoring EFS can be applied to any Samsung phone with IMEI issues as last resort.

Galaxy note 3 sm-n900 Unkonwn baseband

hello Guys, i have a galaxy note 3 sm-n900 on my hand right now, the problem is that i have no data, unknown baseband and no imei (Null/Null)......is there any solution ??? thank you...
In normal case all this missing comes from factory, if you need help from others you must explain how this happened, what rom you are using etc etc

May be your imei data was corrupt.
Did you make backup for the EFS data?
If so just restore it.
i have the same issue with a friends phone, no EFS backup, he won't tell what he did to the phone but now imei is null/null and doesn't have a baseband, anyway to fix it?

similar problem
I have a sm-n900 exynos and I have lost my imei and baseband during a Samsung flash. I have a TWRP backup, efs.img backup by dr.ketan's backup tool but nothing is able to restore my efs. I have scanned emmc blocks for bricked blocks and all blocks come back as non-corrupted. may be the partition is corrupted .how do I erase my efs partition to rebuild it. I have tired to flash PIT from ODIN but that too doesn't work.
tried this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2567133&page=36
but need a guide to identify the partitions and how to rebuild them. by any chance anyone know if I could extract twrp backup to files to restore efs or from efs.img so I can use the nv_data.bin, since tried restoring the backups and it didn't restore I feel the partition might be corrupt and hence not being re-written. so might be I have to rebuild the partitions by formatting as explained in this thread. but I don't know exactly the steps for exynos variant. I tried using terminal on twrp but mkef2 command shows mmbcblkp03 doesn't exist which as I have read in posts is the efs partition on this phone and reboots to twrp recovery. and mmbcblkp12 show filesystem too small and reboots to twrp recovery
weird thing is, i sometimes find the imei and the baseband and sometimes i dont, phone's not rooted yet, trying to find a way to root it without trippong knox since is not mine, but maybe im able to recover the efs i hope it works
Same problem here...
Hey guys, I'm experiencing the same problem since i installed VN kit kat rom. I searched for the efs backup and i found it but when i use odin to flash it it doesn't work. I tried flashing back to stock but that doesn't work. Can soneone please help me?
Fixed it!!!
If you have a n900 and your imei is null and your baseband is unknown all you have to do is to flash the file beneath with cwm recovery and voila!
You don't have me to thank, DaOldMan/Thomas deserves all the credit!

HI just one question my friend has the exact same problem (IMEI null/null) baseband is unkown !!! the device is SM-N900 running 4.4.2 right now he flashed the file but the problem still exist !!! pleeeeeeeeease help !!
this file only works if the device is running official 4.3 ??? or we can flash it on stock 4.4.2 !!!
it seems wiered to me that others on this forum flashed the file and it worked with them !!!!!
pleeeeeeease help
You can still flash it if you have 4.4.2. The file i uploaded to be flashed is just to flash the baseband not the rom itself.
Btw did you flash the file with cwm recovery?

That s due to a modem you update so go back to original modem. ..
Ohw ok.... When i flashed the file my sim card got the read the first time i restarted my phone. I don't get why it doesn't work for your friend. What you can try to do is to download (google) other basebands for n900 and try to see if those work (it doesn't necessarily have to be 4.4.2 cuz i flashed the same 4.3 file on my 4.4.2 phone and it worked). If that doesn't work you can try to flash a stock rom and then flash a baseband ( while still in recovery mode), try the one i uploaded. just be sure to have a backup of the current rom if the stock one doesn't seem to be solution.
Maybe start with these :

I think that's alright.
*The file I downloaded has a file name of "BL_N7100XXUEMJ5_1903221_REV04_user_low_ship.tar" and it's 1.83 MB
**There is a Fix that is provided in the site for v5
Goodluck.

EFS: Try Dr. Ketan's app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yahoo.dr.ketan.efsn7100
Nandroid Backup: TWRP can handle that.
Modem: You need PC Odin. Try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2205009 of JoelDroid, in the "SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR 3.6 AND ABOVE" part or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2500823 by Dr. Ketan, up to #2.
Do it in that order ^
Goodluck.

Well i kind of know the rules of XDA.
But here's the catch, i have tried that method mentioned above.
Downloaded the .tar file and flashed via Odin. And now my phone is stuck on Samsung logo forever.
That's why posted here.

Hey
You are only flashing a kernel...not a full 4.4.2 original image.
And that's why you're stock on the boot logo.

As mentioned you are flasing only kernel, i use odin 1.85
stock 5.0.1 roms mega mirrors http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...06-lolipop-official-samsung-firmware-t3023794 thanks to @Mar10
and tar files from 4.4.2 open nordic countries thanks to @DeHAWK

XXUCNI1 https://mega.co.nz/#!1EtAWTQB!zHVAwXe3odz6ipvhZmpdSXUnTKy1w_oYRpRlRMRa6DQ
take the battery out wait 5-10 secs and enter to download mode to avoid modem issues.
its not recomendable but if you have a backup of a pit file for your phone select it and thick re-partition, this is dangerous but may help with bootloop only if flashing the firmware with no repartition work, repartition with out a pit file may brick your device.

One more noob question..
I did a back up of my touchwiz before converting to CM.
And i got the back up file as normal file folder instead a zip file.
I wonder if there is a way to restore it.
I already tried zipping it and restoring from philz recovery...but it says bad file.

you´re welcome.
did you do the backup from philz recovery? i never did a backup from recovery, only with titanium, so i really dont know, but to restore a backup needs to be done from the same source that the backup was created. for the screen shots looks like a CWM recovery backup good luck.

but after the first samsung screen (samsung galaxy s4) and a blue T logo, it gets struck on the third screen with only samsung written on it with a solid blue led.
(( what the heck am i doing wrong.
Anyway i flashed the full image with odin..(taken from your link).
And back to touchwiz again.
Thanks a lot.
One more thing is, it changed my baseband version a bit.
Build number : I9506XXUCNJ1
bASEBAND vERSION : I9506XXUCNF3
IS THAT A PROBLEM ?

Sorry to bother you again.
But i am facing a new kinda problem now with custom recoveries.
After flashing NEE-I9506XXUCNJ1-20141114075501 yesterday it got auto updated to 5.0.1 lollipop .
Now i am stuck with stock recovery.
Tried to flash philz 6.x.x.x as before with odin. The odin process completes itself and reboots the phone.
But when i try to get into recovery still its booting in stock recovery.
Any solution on how can i flash custom recovery on this ?
Additional info
Baseband version : I9506XXUDOA6
bUILD NUMBER : LRX22C. I9506XXUDOA6
Flash your Favorite Custom Recovery with Odin 3.xx and put it to AP. Check that Auto Reboot isn't marked. After successful flashing your Phone won't to reboot. USB Cable out and put your Battery out and wait few seconds. Put your Battery in and reboot it to Recovery. The Stock Recovery can't now overwrite the Custom Recovery.

in lollipop i used TWRP recovery (TWRP_2.8.4.0_ks01lte_20150207.tar.md5)https://www.mediafire.com/folder/p3rwwfm7xn76x/TWRP flashed with odin 1.85 no problems.
but after rooting with cf autoroot http://download.chainfire.eu/502/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-ks01lte-ks01ltexx-gti9506.zip( extract and flash with odin in pda) because cf autorrot flash stock recovery after rooting.
Important after rooting flash immediately custom recovery, if you boot in stock recovery after root all apps will force close and you will need to wipe data (stock recovery wipe data will delete internal memory as well), so do not boot in stock recovery.
