Blocked update URL blocks whole FireTV - Fire TV General

Hey,
I searched but didnt find anything on this issue.
I am on German FW 51.1.3.0_user_513011820, since it was delivered with 51.1.3.0 and I had to run update to start the FireTV the first time.
So now I blocked amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net in my router to avoid future updates in the hope of getting root with my FW later on.
Issue is: When I block the URL the whole FireTV says there is no connection and stops working! So either I have to unblock amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net and risk new updates or I keep waiting until there will probably be root for my FW without being able to use the FireTV until then.
Or is it possible to block the URLs somehow without blocking the whole FireTV? Or am I just blocking the wrong URL?
Any hint on this would be highly appreciated.
Cheers,
T

I have softwareupdates.amazon.com & amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net blocked, but don't have any problems like you explained. I'm running a rooted USA version though.

Isn't your SW version un-rootable? If so, what is the point of blocking updates?
Anyway I have the update apps blocked using AFTV Utility App but you may need to be rooted to do that as it "freezes" the apps. There are three with "DCP" in the names. AFTV UA here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56005271#post56005271
As for the router, I read to block this, "firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com" rather than what you mentioned. Read here:

Same for me. I am on the same Firmware on a german FireTV. So I can confirm that.

yep. Same problem here.
As soon as I try to set a certain profile for the fireTV in my Fritbox, it stops working even though I haven't blocked anything at this point.

The Fire TV checks a web page in order to determine if it has an internet connection. If it can't reach that one web page, it thinks it has no connection. Last I checked, the web page it checks is: http://spectrum.s3.amazonaws.com/kindle-wifi/wifistub.html
It's possible this has changed with 51.1.3.0. When I get a chance I'll run Wireshark on a 51.1.3.0 unit to see if things have changed, but I may not have time to do it until Monday.
In the mean time, if your router has the ability to block via a string instead of just a domain, you can block "signed.bin" as all of the updates have ended in that. You can test to see if your block works by trying to download one of the stock software files listed at AFTVnews.com/software

Thanks all. The URL "firs-ta-g7g.amazon.com" doesn't seem to block the whole device anymore, but I hope it would still block any upcoming updates...
Waiting for rooting methods desperately... :crying:

New M.O.J.O. firmware available - v.0202

Hi All,
We'll be sending out a newsletter shortly to anyone who registered with us when they were setting up their MOJO but I thought the community here on XDA would appreciate some early notice. The new firmware release is available now and can be downloaded from this link:
ftp://86.54.116.234/pub/software/mojo/firmware/mojo-signed-ota-MO0202-WW.zip
I recommend downloading directly on MOJO so it goes straight into your Downloads folder. It's then simply a case of running the Software Update app in your All Apps view, selecting the 0202 update and then clicking Upgrade.
As I've mentioned on a few other threads this will remove Paul's Modaco Root Mod, but you can then reapply the mod back once the update has finished.
The main feature this update adds is Over The Air update capability so manual updating won't be required in future. It also addresses the bug with Bluetooth keyboards where the onscreen keyboard keeps appearing, along with a couple of other Bluetooth tweaks.
Awesome. Will update mine tonight after work, then reapply the MoDaCo Mod. Let you know how it goes...

I don't understand what that means. Can you be more explicit? When, while using Dolphin, I click on the link provided, I get "page not found". Ditto when I use the stock browser. Have you downloaded an FTP client add on to Dolphin of ???
Did you install ES File Manager, as we recommend in our Getting Started section from the M.O.J.O. link on your homescreen? If not try it and then see if that can handle the download for you when you click the link.

I did install ES File Manager when I initially set up my MOJO. At some point since then, I "updated" to version 2.4.9.8 (Aptoid notified me that an update was available if I recall correctly). Given your instructions, I went back and checked the version available from Google Play, which is 3.1.0.1. I uninstalled 2.4.9.8 and installed 3.1.0.1, and tried the URL you provided again, and now it is downloading (extremely slow download speed BTW - ~60Kb/s).
I read somewhere recently that Asian cultures enjoy ambiguity in their instructions. Whether that is true or not, I do not know. I however, detest ambiguity. If MCZ ever hopes to make MOJO ready for the masses, please be as explicit as possible with your instructions. Doing so will prevent a lot of frustration.
PS: Thanks for your help!

Downloaded the update and installed it per the previous post, but knowing that the update can be accomplished using the update firmware link contained in the mojo setup app is good to know. Thanks!
The explanation from the entrance post may confuse some people.
It's not a must to download the firmware directly with the M.O.J.O.
You can download the update with your computer at the regular way and put the file on a sdcard.
It should be listed in the update tool, if you start it.
You only need to choose it and answer the dialogue box.
Hi
When i clik on upgrade, android shutdown and never restart.
Are you running the file off the MOJO internal memory?
If youre doing it via USB, plug the thumb drive into the USB 3.0 port (if you plug it into the USB 2.0, it won't work).
try to force, it s work
Thank you

i would not doubt it
i dont know the change log
but i have seen two users report the 13.2.2.2 update
it could not be anything more than to mess up the work around that people have been getting away with by updating the build.prop
because when i try to change the build.prop to 14.3.2.2_user_322095220 in all the right places and try to save it the way i did before using root explorer it saves as 0 kb and is blank when i look at it.so i delete it and change the build.prop.bak file that is created when changing the build.prop back to build.prop because i am afraid to reboot with the blank one in fear of a brick

Google "hdx 8.9 download"
Find the Amazon page that lets you manually download the updates
The download link points to 14.3.2.1..
Copy that link into a new browser window and edit it in two places

Wonder what changed... the recovery, kernel(s) and system apps all appear to be the same. There must be some critical bugs that had to be urgently patched with this latest update coming so quick on the tail of the 13.3.2.1 update.
[Edit]Upon closer inspection, looks like there are some noticeable changes in the following apps:
WhisperlinkSdk.apk
WhisperplayActivityView.apk
WhisperplayCDSSettings.apk
WhisperplayCore.apk
WhisperplayQCSource.apk
com.amazon.communication.apk
com.amazon.tcomm.apk

I've updated 13.3.2.2, somehow opened when the machine is updated immediately so!!
I wonder if it would be possible to insert the SU binaries in this new update and then manually install it without breaking the signature
I just did a manual "Check Update" on my HDX 7 and it said no new updates, but only has 13.3.2.1.
I did sniff the traffic from the Kindle during this check and found that it contacted "softwareupdates.amazon.com" - which I now blocked in my router for what its worth.
Captured packets attached just in case they're useful.

Couple questions...
1. Once I stay out of the Stock rom it shouldn't update. Am I right on that?
2. If I have a rom slot with Fire OS loaded to it and in use. Can I turn on wifi and it not update?
3. I have the AOSP rom in as lot. Can I turn on wifi in this without fear of update?

so it will not be able to fully update it will bootloop back to safestrap according to GSLEON3
Update the hosts file on the kindle to point to localhost(127.0.0.1) or something. That might, or might not offer some help on WiFi you don't control. You'll need to still have root to do this of course.

Get Update from different carrier using SmartSwitch [Canadian]

IF YOU USED THIS METHOD BEFORE AND WANT THE NEW ROGERS/FIDO UPDATE THEN LOOK AT POST
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68314268&postcount=72
This guide is for Canadian S6 edge owners who are with Rogers or Fido since the been waiting for Marshmallow update forever. However, This should work for for others as long as the TWO CARRIERS share the exact phone model, which is the case for all s6 in canadian market.
DO it on your own responsibility
Doing this will not delete your data or trigger knox ... However, its wise to backup with SmartSwitch before attempting so.
1- I assume that you running windows and have latest version of samsung smart switch installed (I tried it on Windows 10)
2- install Fiddler (Its used to capture HTTP traffic and we will use it to be man-in-the-middle between Smartswitch and Samsung servers)
https://www.telerik.com/download/fiddler
3- Install FiddlerScript Editor (we will use to write and edit script rules)
http://www.telerik.com/download/fiddler/fiddlerscript-editor
4- Open Fiddler go to Rules --> customize rules
delete everything and past whats in the txt file in the attachment
5 - In this we are interested in only two functionsin that script
the contact from SMARTSwitch to the Sever: Here instead my phone identify itself as Fido phone "FMC" to the server it pretend its Kodoo phone "KDO"
Code:
static function OnBeforeRequest(oSession: Session) {
if (oSession.uriContains("NF_DownloadBinaryInform")){
oSession.utilReplaceInRequest("FMC", "KDO");
}
}
the contact from the server to SMARTSwitch: Here i get replay from the server for Kodoo phone "KDO" but i pass it to SmartSwitch as Fido phone "FMC"
Code:
static function OnBeforeResponse(oSession: Session) {
if (oSession.uriContains("NF_Download")){
oSession.utilReplaceInResponse("KDO","FMC");
}
}
6- Now safe and restart Fiddler
- Also when you open Fiddler go to File -> Capture traffic
make sure its checked
- Also make sure that fiddler can access HTTPS traffic by going to Tools--> Fiddler options --> HTTPS tab
make sure that 'capture HTTPS connect" and "decrypt https traffic" are both checked
7- Another thing worth mentioning, in Smart Switch > More > Preferences > Software update you have to deactivate Latest software Pre-Download
if you keep that option checked, the download will start in background before you click the update button, and procedure will end in error too;
8- Start SmartSwitch and plug your phone.
9- Click on the Update button
10- after Smart switch is offering the update download, accept the terms of update, then immediately when download start preperation, fidller must be closed. it is very crucial that Fiddler be turned off at just the right time otherwise you will get an error ;
Note: those are the codes for Canadian Carriers:
- Fido: FMC
- Koodo : KDO
-Rogers: RWC
-Bell: BMC
- Wind: GLW
-Telus: TLS
- Virgin: VMC
-Sasktel: BWA
-EastLink: ESK
- Vidéotron: VTR
This page will show you which carrier has the latest update
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G925W8/
For now Kodoo has the latest update which support wifi calling
thank you; greatly appreciated;
just installed the Telus version of 6.0.1, July 1 security patch; it worked very fine.
only one mention you may add maybe:
after Smart switch is offering the update download, accept the terms of update, then immediately after the download start, fidller must be closed;
else the download will end with error at about 70%
the rest is flawless, absolutely no problem with the update, first boot will take little more time, even more if lot of apps are installed, because all apps are optimized at first boot.

I have everything set up correctly and I can see the Update button, I hit it, goes to preparing and I close Fiddler it then says The most current update is already installed on connected device. I'm on SM-G925W8, Android 5.1.1.
Should I try changing the RWC to BMC as Im currently on Bell network even though it was a locked Rogers phone?

Ok, I think I got it to work finally. I tried KDO, but ended up using TLS in the end. I tried several times and got the previously mentioned errors. I also kept getting "this device is up to date" but I kept trying and it seems that it is very crucial that Fiddler be turned off at just the right time. I finally got it to work by turning off Fiddler right after the two notices from Smart Switch and immediately following that, the update download started.
It is downloading now and I will update this post when the upgrade is successful.
Thanks for the tip!

Looking forward to hear your feedback, so maybe I can post the thread in S6 Forum because I know everyone sick waiting for rogers and fido to release the update. I have been using this method since last year to get update as soon as any carrier push it. In theory it should work for all Samsung phones as long as the phone model is the same between the two carrier.

5.4.0.0

Just got an update at 2:30CST.
Oh great...now what. Kingroot updated today. It keeps telling me I have root. I don't. But I did fool around with permissions in ADB...I was trying to issue it permissions it didn't have. It only started to tell me I had root after I did that. Though ADB gave me an error when adding some of them.
updated too, no chancelog
This is great! People - use No root Firewall to block OTA so you won't get it because this must mean there is an exploit in 5.3.3.0

Or NetGuard. I bought a license a while back so it can resolve hostnames. I have every Amazon app on wifi lockdown and all of their current known servers and IPS blocked. BTW look out for exploits of the CVE type. Those seem to be what a lot of Android exploits are written from. I managed to get a dirtycow cow sript to run, unfortunately all I got out of it was a wiped internal sdcard and no SuperUser. But it was the first time I've been able to execute a dirtycow script successfully on fireOS. Successful as in at least it ran.

It might be Cast Screen. I just noticed they added an option in developers options for the wireless display certification. Also now have access to some Accessibility features that were hidden, almost like usage access but not quite.

It takes a bit to get used to and to figure out what apps use what IPs. But I finally got it set up pretty darn good. Still in 5.3.3.0 as well.

When you ran C0ward/DirtyC0W/moo it gave you temp root? Interestingly my tablet updated to Fire 5.4 >: | I don't know how. Also KingRoot used a different stragity in the new update - I think they released a few security patches

I never saw a #. All I know it the script ran, finished but I didn't have su so far as I could tell. I tried sudo and su and got "not found". Rootchecker said no root as well. But the internal sdcard storage was completely erased.
EDIT: this is the one I ran: https://github.com/timwr/CVE-2016-5195 It was updated recently to fix the exploit couldn't be downloaded error. It ran for a while too. All the way. At the end said done. I guess it meant done erasing your card lol.

It might be Cast Screen. I just noticed they added an option in developers options for the wireless display certification. Also now have access to some Accessibility features that were hidden, almost like usage access but not quite.

Quite possible. Amazon and other distributors have been working through ridiculous DRM restrictions in the US and elsewhere. One reason you see additional content now available for download on standard Android devices. Possible they have secured agreements around generic casting. Obviously shameless speculation but I can see those dots being connected.

Here is a question. When an actual SDcard is placed into the slot, what are the permissions? Are they set the same across all devices?
I have 5.4.0.0 waiting in system updates. It's trying to get past my firewall.
I got my 7" 7th gen already updated to 5.3.3.0 rigjt after first power on I went out 10 mins and it updated while I was outside... I'm so unlucky
The firmware is available for download now, so I got it, and extracted the bootloader files.
Surprisingly, the preloader_prod.img and lk.img files haven't changed since 5.3.3.0 (which seems to suggest that a rollback might be possible???) but tz.img and preloader.img have.
The build.prop file contains
Code:
ro.build.mktg.fireos=Fire OS 5.4.0.0
ro.build.version.name=Fire OS 5.3.4.0 (579225620)
They must have been in a hurry... also what about the size? They lost more than 10%...

A rollback won't do any good if there's no root.
It's a damn shame when Amazon won't even let you run Live Wallpapers. They really know how to take all the fun out of it. A real shame.

Although I agree with your sentiments Amazon is not alone in that choice. Seen several custom ROMs omit the necessary underpinnings for live wallpapers citing resource consumption (dubious claim IMO) and additional complexity/size for a service that only serves one purpose. Latter might be Amazon's motivation.

I have had a few of the several Live Wallpapers on my XT907 for sometime now. It drains little if any noticable resources and or battery power. Amazon has it set so you can only have wallpapers if the images are uploaded to prime photos.

I can get the wallpapers to run...just not as wallpapers. Activity Launcher brings them out, but They run over the top of everything. And they aren't gifs so I can't upload them and even if I could i would need to register back with Amazon.

[NST/NSTG] FW 1.2.2 update

I've been waiting around for more than a week for my second "new" NST to update. It finally did so yesterday. The update has been mentioned on the Mobileread forums and one XDA member has already asked about rooting it so I thought I'd see what I could learn. You apparently won't learn anything from B&N as they either respond as if this is something that should not happen (so beware!) or they say it provides minor enhancements. There is no notice of the update on their cobweb-ridden website for the NST, no opportunity to do a manual update. It takes about a week of WiFi on all the time to catch the rolling push.
Edit: B&N has since posted the update zip on their website. For users with non-US firmwares, I recommend flashing US 1.2.1 firmware (see https://sites.google.com/site/xcdguides/nook/nookB&N). You cannot register 1.2.1 but you can update it before registering. At the "welcome" screen connect the device to your PC and transfer the update zip from B&N. Let the device sleep and it will do the update. Then you can register if you desire.
Edit: The time for OTA updates is past and I'm not sure if devices still running 1.2.1 will act up in any way. Certainly you won't be able to contact B&N servers and this could lead to connection error messages when WiFi is turned on.
What's new?
I can't claim to have done a thorough shakedown but there is no obvious change in the device on FW 1.2.2. I suspect this is a security update to keep the devices in line with new security measures on B&N servers so that owners can still spend money at B&N via the devices But I was curious to see if the cacerts.bks file had been changed since some certificates have already failed (a few of which have been fixed already by @tshoulihane to keep the Kindle app working). No joy there--not that I was surprised. B&N doesn't need cacerts to ensure correct negotiation with their servers via their own apps. Everything seems exactly the same.
To update or not to update
If, like me, you rooted your device earlier with NookManager, the update will fail and your device will spontaneously reboot. This behavior (occurring every Sunday morning as I listened to NPR on the TuneIn app) is what lead me to the conclusion that it was the update process. If you don't give a hoot about the update but you're not keen on having your device reboot on a whim, here is a fix: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34433959&postcount=3
Edit: well, that seemed to work at first, but then the weekly reboots began until I finally updated.
I don't know about other rooting methods potentially interfering with the update process.
If you just must have the update, it is likely you will need to restore your device to stock, re-register it, and leave WiFi on for a week or so until the update occurs (I left mine on the Library screen so I would know when a reboot--taking you to Home--occurred).
Edit: at this point, you will have to manually download the 1.2.2 update zip from B&N and manually install it on your device. This will require you to invoke a factory re-image as the update will not work on a rooted device. A NookManager card (even an old one) can be used to start the factory reset. Once that's done and you're at the "Welcome" screen, connect your device to your PC and drag the 1.2.2 update zip to the "Nook" drive. Let the device sleep. Come back in awhile and see if the update zip is still visible on the "Nook" drive. If it's gone, the update has been done. Now for rooting.....
Can I root it?
The short answer is "yes".
NookManager is versatile and wonderful, but it does have a bit of dust on it by now. I plan to look into that and start another thread. For now, there are two files which need to be edited in order to use it successfully with FW 1.2.2. You'll want Notepad++ or similar.
Prepare the NookManager card as described in its thread. Examine the prepared card in your PC. You'll see one partition:
NookManager
In that partition find the folder "scripts". You need to edit these two files:
install_nookmods
install_old_installer
In both files the change is the same. Near the top of the file you will find this line:
Code:
if [ "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.0" -a "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.1" ]; then
You want to change it to look like this:
Code:
if [ "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.0" -a "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.1" -a "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.2"]; then
Not sure how touchy spaces, etc., are, but try to follow what's already there. Save the files and you're good to go.
Now....there is an issue with a few apps like Opera Mobile and Tasker not wanting to install. They are the only two I have encountered so far. Here is the "fix": https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76873102&postcount=5
Thanks!!
It works, Thanks! I just rooted my new NSTG with no issues.
:good:
Hi, I have followed all the steps, but when I restarted my Nook its directly booting into NOOK system instead of NookManager.
Can you please help me here, I don't see any logs to upload.
Thanks

If it's not booting off the card then one or more of the files on the card must be damaged. Rather than trying to figure it out, it would be easier to just make a new card (try formatting your old one and writing the image again). I wouldn't even make the changes needed for 1.2.2 until you establish whether the card boots. You don't have to use NookManager, just see if it will boot and then exit if it does. Then you can make the needed changes and try again. If it doesn't boot after you've done the minimal edits, then somehow the card has been mishandled. Be sure to eject the card safely from your PC.

Thanks, I have tried multiple times (Format and reload) but till it does not boot into sdcard. I will try once again from scratch in the weekend.
Great!
Its works perfectly, i rooted my nook simple one touch with update 1.2.2
I am in the UK and have a Nook Simple Touch Glow-light. It was on f/w version 1.2.1 and would not connect to the internet. I downloaded the nook_1_2_update.zip from the USA B&N site at copied it to the Nook using the USB connection from my PC. However it would not update to 1.2.2, the zip file just disappears.
I then used the excellent Nook Region Changer, and changed the Nook to USA region. I again wrote the nook_1_2_update.zip file to the Nook using the USB connection, and after the next wake up cycle on my nook it updated to 1.2.2 and allowed me to register on the USA B&N website and browse books, etc, but not do any social media things, and also I cannot buy books or download free ones as I do not have a USA home address, which is required.
I again used Nook Region Changer and put my nook back to UK version, but this process 'lost' the 1.2.2 update so I am back to square one.
Apparently the two firmware updates to move a USA NST/G to FW 1.2.2 (downloaded from USA B&N site) and the one to ove a UK NST/G to 1.2.2 (downloaded from the now defunct UK B&N website) are different and incompatible.
My questions is "Does anyone have a copy of the UK version of the nook_1_2_update.zip file please?"
I would like to thank you guys at XDA for your very comprehensive and detailed information about the NST/G, and the tools supplied.

There will never be another update other than the US one you have already tried. I think you may be expecting too much from the device at this point. A made-up USA address might be of some use, but I doubt it. Even with US firmware from the US I could never get the Google stuff to work and I just assume that B&N never cared much about updating URLs and APIs for the social media stuff and just wanted to be sure US customers could still purchase books. But that's my somewhat cynical take.
Anyway, you can always go back to US 1.2.2 and then delete ALL the B&N stuff and build your own reader if that suits you. See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nst-g-removing-bn-apps-t3972941
Thanks for the quick reply, I will do as you suggest. The Nook is a reasonable little reader and the glowlight is a nice feature.
You are quite right, I think I am expecting a little too much from it.
All the best,
Alan

Faulty? What happens?
Did you remember to do a factory reset before trying the update? You cannot update a rooted device with that zip.

They didn't make it easy.
Go here: https://help.barnesandnoble.com/app...212/~/having-trouble-connecting-to-your-nook?
Scroll down to a list of the various Nook models and click on Nook Simple Touch: 1.2.2
That will drop you down farther on the same page where you'll find manual installation instructions and below that, little pictures of the devices with the word "Download" under each.
Please, someone has the files? The links are down!!!
Thank you

I was having this exact problem but I couldn't use the Nook Region Changer because step #4 is to reset the device which I couldn't do because it couldn't connect to the internet (RAGE!!!). I have spent days trying to sort this out it's absolutely ridiculous.
I have finally found this page: https://heeed.net/resetting-a-nook-simple-touch/ which has helped me to reset it to factory settings and get it working to a basic level again without being registered.
I'm furious really that B&N won't give us a working update so we can at least use Wifi on our devices, WTF?! Disgusting customer service! Anyway, hope that link helps someone else!

Well, I also have learned a bit since my original post. See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/nst-g-dealing-with-non-us-aka-uk-devices-in-2021.4233411/
I think there are options there which may give you a better result.
