I just tested the USB 2.0 and 3.0 cable with a 800MB movie file, both cables are plugged into a USB 3.0 port on my computer so that everything is ceteris paribus.
The transfer speed to micro sd card with USB 3.0 cable was 1:51, the speed with USB 2.0 was 1:53.
The transfer speed to phone storage was both 0:25 for usb 2 and 3.
It makes virtually no difference if it USB 2 or 3 on the Note 3 in terms of speed.
What was is the point of having and using USB 3.0?

can you explain more, I don't understand.
And how did you connect the 2.0 cable into the phones 3.0 port ?
Are you even sure what you are saying ?
Either you don't have 3.0 on your computer or you didn't enable it in the phone.

You need to enable USB 3.0 when you plug it in a USB 3.0 port. It will appear if you are plugged in a 3.0 port. If not, you are just using 2.0 by default.

You are using the blue usb3 port on your pc/laptop? With the stock usb3 cable, all is working well in window 7 64bit for me. Just have to remember to select usb 3 on the phone when connected.

Hello Man,
let's first differentiate between two things ,1. Physical Cable 2. Configurations
1. Physical cabling : In USB3.0 case you should be using the white cable that comes with the mobile and use a USB3.0 port in the laptop/PC usually the USB3.0 port in laptops has a "thunder like logo" beside it or something to differentiate it from normal USB2.0 ports , in USB2.0 case u can use any micro USB cable and plug it in any PC port.
2. Configuration : in USB3.0 case ,once you plug the cable in the USB3.0 port you shall find USB option in the notification panel in your mobile ,tick it to enable the full speed port.
In USB2.0 case you will not find this USB3.0 option in the notification panel.
I hope this helps...

Hello,
Firstly, will this thing will work on my HD2? (of course in Ubuntu)
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/micro-usb-on-the-go-host-otg-adapter-pair-50774 <-- I have bought that ready, shipping, just conifrm that will this work
Secondly, will the usb port will provide power to the usb devices? If not, will a USB hub with a DC power input will work?
Third, are there any NON-DISPLAYALINK tech.'s usb display will work on HD2??? (Display Link have no driver for ARM's Ubuntu)
I will open a new post after the item is shipped, and it works.
Thanks.

A normal Hub is not enought for this
There are a lot of threads about this.
My favorite:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10797562
You need to power up the HD2 side of the USB connection, because the phone doesn't provide the +5V like a normal USB host.
You can also use a y-cable (from a external HDD) and connect the second pc-connector for additional power to a +5V
source, there are also some threads around here

I think I've read something in the ubuntu development thread that they want to try it, but haven't heard something about a running version
But important:
USB host is working with ubuntu, I'm using mouse and keyboard myself.
So, keep on trying
Regards
mf_1
But why that Ian hub will not work?
It have a extra power supplying port!
And I am going to buy a dc5v 2000ma(2a) dc power supply!
The power supply is only for the client side (mouse, HDD....).
Normal USB hosts provide the host side, but the HD2 doesn't.
mf_1
Yea
The host will not provide power
But my power supply will!
So my devices will ONLY get power from my dc power, not the the host!
Isn't it?
Yes, but you also need power on the host side. The controller chip in the hub is connected to the host device. (See link in my first answer)
Leo has no power on host side -> controller has no power -> client side not working, no USB device for ubuntu
But I have tried to NOT PLUG THE IN THE USB CABLE, only plug the dc power, but the hub still have led light, and the the 4 hub port still have power!

I didn't plug the USB...
Sorry, perhaps my english isn't understandable.
For USB Standard:
The additional power supply is only for client side.
The client side is working without additional power supply, if you use clients with low power consumption, such as mouse, keyboard, some memory sticks. They use the power provide by the host.
Most HDD need additional power.
But again: Leo isn't providing a normal host, there is no power on the host side.
Regards
mf_1
But i still don't understand...
Can't the client side USE the DC power(not use the host side), the Host side is only for data
And i conifrmed that the Client side can have power without host power support!

the light on the hub is just to inform you that an external power supply is connected to it, nothing more.
a good usb hub has 2 electrical circuits, 1 on the host side (computer/hd2), and 1 on the client side (the ports).
the host side uses the power from the host to power the usb controller in the hub, and send all left over power to the client side.
this is the first circuit, which is connected to the second circuit via a diode (1 way street for power).
the second circuit has a connector to hook up the external power supply.
now if what you say is really true, the manufactorer of your hub has saved about 2 cents by removing the diodes, which are there for safety.
not having those can result in a burn out of the host controller (the 1 inside your computer).
the hd2 is a usb client device, this means the powerlines on the connector are there to recieve power (charging).
but the hub needs a host usb connection (sending power).
so you either need to make a Y cable, or modify the hub.

Am I being dense or is it possible to plug the supplied usb cable into a laptop or desktop computer and use the computer's screen and keyboard to interface with the HD2 running Ubuntu? ie software hub in laptop.
Is there a place for us to buy such a USB host from the net instead of having to perform these delicate things ourselves? I know many here are DIY people, but what about for those of us who are electronic illiterate? Anyone found a supplier for such USB hubs? Thanks

looking at the size of the solar panel it is only ment to power the 2 leds from the torch.
as i doubt it can give out the 2 amps which we need.

Not sure if usb host without a Motorola media hub / lapdock has been mentioned. I managed to get my Atrix working with full host by applying 5vdc to the usb power rail. Seems to work with any usb hub and keyboard / mouse combo long as 5vdc is present on the host side(phone microusb connector). This works in both webtop and normal android shell. Mouse control in Android just jumps from widget to widget but works normally in Webtop mode. Anyone seen a cursor apps for android?
Demo of it in action.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shvFmLRUNGA
*update* I got usb drive mounting to work!
It would seem to be very easy, Motorola seems to have blocked auto mounting without the media/lapdock (why must they be such c*&ts)
*MAKE SURE ITS FORMATED FAT32!* NTFS might be doable with a ntfs-3g module but I haven't tried yet.
Run file manager (root explorer ect...) browse to /dev/block and see what you have listed in there. I had sda and sda1 listed only when I inserted a usb drive so I knew it had to be the drive.

Run "Terminal Emulator"
su
mkdir /sdcard-ext/usb (this can be any directory you want on ether the internal or microsd)
mount -t vfat /dev/block/sda1 /sdcard-ext/usb
To unmout the drive safely before removing it. just make sure all apps that might be using the usb drive are close or it'll fail to unmount
umount /sdcard-ext/usb
That's it; your drive will now show up in the file manager and webtop. I decided on the microsd so applications could see it without messing about.
Optional
Grab gscript off the market and then run the mount / unmount script from it insted of typing it out.
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but here is what I understand about this.
By applying a constant 5V DC through a powered USB hub, we can get USB host functionality by plugging devices into the hub?
Could you be more specific, if this is not the case? Also, what adapter are you using on the Atrix side, and what cables are connected to the hub? It seems like you are using a straight microUSB male to USB male, then connecting a female to male cable from the atrix to the hub. I can't tell for sure though.
Either way, it works, which is awesome!
That's it exactly, haha. It's really just that simple.
Your micro to female A adapter isn't an OTG-specific one?
can you post links of the stuff you bought so others may do this?

You do need to solder wires, you need to make a bridge from the DC power to the +5vdc usb host line. The little orange wire is my bridge, each usb hub will be a little different. If you don't bridge nothing will work, the Atrix doesn't supply any power to the devices.
You think this hub would work? I have around 9 dollars of DE credit, so I wanted to get the powered hub from there as well. There's no information on how much voltage the external power supplies though.

Correct. My hub uses a USB B input but one with USB mini or micro should work just the same. All that matters is +5vdc makes it up stream to.
bad hub?
Maybe I got a bum hub. I have soldered the +5 from the power adapter terminal like in the video, to the power line of the usb hub's single "out" port. so then i plug in my atrix to that same port and the keyboard to one of the 4 "in" ports and I get nothing. seemed simple enough so maybe my usb hub is not compatible. I have usb debugging off, i have usb mounting set to none. if you do happen to notice anything i f'ed up please let me know. ill go hub shopping maybe tomorrow i guess.

Are you using a usb micro OTG adaptor, or just spliced the wires. Cause I think it needs a few pins on the usb micro side to be crossed. I haven't read into it enough.
(UPDATE) Looks like I was right the ID pin on the microusb has to be grounded.

Hi, I am relatively new to digital 'prototyping' so USB protocols and almost everything digital is new to me.
The long and short of my question is, if I plugged a standard USB flash drive into an OTG adapter, and then plugged all that into a micro USB to standard USB (which I doubt actually exists) and plugged that combo into a PC, would I be able to access the flash drive? How exactly do OTG devices VS 'regular' USB devices work?
From the circuit schematics I've studied, it appears that the only difference between a standard USB and OTG interface is a bridge across pins 4 and 5. So how would this affect plugging said OTG device into a PC?
Yes. Long as your device supports it.

So if I directly hardmodded a standard USB flash drive with a micro USB plug, bridging pins 4 and 5 to make the device OTG-ready, if I plugged that now hardmodded flash drive into a micro USB (female) to USB A (male) the PC would still read the drive as a standard flash drive?
This makes sense because apparently on the micro-usb interface, pin 4 is "sense"?

Thank you for your assistance.
Yes/no.
The standard (full-size) USB A and B connectors only have 4 contacts and 4 conductors.
The ID pin (#4) is only on USB mini and micro connectors.
You need to signal your cell phone to go into host mode.
That means that the connector plugged directly into the cell phone has to have a grounded pin #4.
Pin #4 is never carried over the cable.
In short, you need an OTG adapter plugged into your cell phone.
Modding other parts of the cable or the USB device you are using won't do anything.
You can (as I have done) take a razor to the connector that plugs into your cell phone,
take the connector apart and solder a wire from pin #4 to ground.

Everything seems in order. The problem is that I can connect USB 3.0 HDD and everything works great. But the Galaxy S5 shows that error.
Hi, was this ever resolved? I also have a 900H but don't even get any USB 3.0 option or notification.....I think the cable I bought might be a scam
have u tried with another usb port?
cauze i had had the same issue and i tried to another and worked..
Here is what happens and I expect should happen.
IF I plugin the phone to a usb3 port it is detected by windows and in the system tray I get a popup alerting me I plugged in a usb3 device into a usb2 port so it wont run as fast as possible.
On the phone notification tray it will show usb connected in media mode, if I tap that I can choose between usb2 media mode, ptp mode and usb3 media mode.
This is if I use a usb3 cable. I have 2 usb3 cables, one is official samsung, another is different brand but still works.
If I use my S5 dock, (this dock claims to be USB3 and comes with a usb3 cable as well as using usb3 connectors) the same thing happens on windows, it alerts me I have plugged in a usb3 device to a usb2 port however I have no option to change to usb3 on the phone, based on this I believe my dock to be faulty and actually only usb2.
So in my opinion if you get no usb3 option on the phone it means either the cable or the port on the pc can only use usb2. There is also a chance of driver problems on the pc, I had to update my intel usb drivers to get usb3 working properly.
Use belkin usb 3.0 which Ian using it. No usb 3.0 displays. It charges good and also does good speed offile transfer .
It appears the cable I bought was the culprit....fake cable even though it had all nice samsung logos and numberings....
I took the cable of my hdd which is a toshiba 3.0 1TB hdd and it worked with that. NOW I do get the USB 3.0 notification...
I really want to use the samsung cable since it will be like 2 feet longer than the hdd cable but how to spot the fake ones from the good ones when buying??
Has anyone been able to get USB OTG to work at all?
I tried using a mouse, keyboard, and usb stick and none of them seem to work on the nexus 6p (they work fine on the nexus 7 though).

Has anyone been able to get USB OTG to work at all?
I tried using a mouse, keyboard, and usb stick and none of them seem to work on the nexus 6p (they work fine on the nexus 7 though).

I have tested it with a few different USB drives using a Type A to Type C cable i found on amazon. I am able to copy files back and forth between the the phone to the drive. I have to use the built in file manager to do this though (Settings>Storage & USB). The drive is not showing up in any file manager i try from the play store.
I have not tried a mouse or keyboard.
Edit: Tried usb mouse. Works fine. Didn't have to change any settings. USB is set to MTP under Dev Options.
Can I connect my DSLR directly with a Type C to Micro B (3.1) Cable? In the past, I always used a OTG Micro B to Type A (Female) and then a Type A to Micro B (3.1) cable.
When I first unboxed my 6P, I connected it to my laptop to transfer music and the storage did not show. Had to change USB setting and then it popped up.

OP did you ever get yours working?
nkornbau, is your 6P rooted? Mine is not rooted (yet), and I can use the internal explorer to see flash drive files via OTG, and I can even display jpgs from there. However, I cannot get the internal explorer to copy and paste files. It gives me a message "Unfortunately, Documents has stopped working."

Oh I remember your username from head-fi.
And btw, while external amp+dac's would work for others, it didn't for me... so...

Strange, working without a hitch here. UAPP/Hiby needed if you're bothered by Android molesting the bitrate, but works with all apps.

My HRT MicroStreamer jumps right to 96k, works with all apps natively. Unfortunately it also drains the battery so I'm looking for a small self-powered option that will do same. Unfortunately it's a bit confusing to suss out what will really work natively without UAPP, etc.
I really dislike the fact that USB OTG forces using the internal file explorer. This would be a great feature to add in custom ROMs, the ability to allow 3rd party apps to access external storage. Google is really pushing those high GB internal storage and cloud sales. Very sad. In fact, the only thing that really stands out as great about this phone compared to my G4 is that I can unlock the bootloader and play around with custom stuff. Other than that, the G4 is way more feature rich.

You can use whatever file explorer you like. External storage shows up for me in Solid Explorer.
Regards which usb DACs work, unfortunately this remains a bit of a roll the dice scenario. The USB audio thread I opened at Head-Fi in the portable sources forum remains the best source there.
Works with mine: I used a Belkin Type-C to Type-A usb adapter (this got 5 stars from Benson Leung, by the way). The built-in file explorer works fine reading its contents and I can also use Nexus Media Importer to access/manage files/play movies/aduio from a USB thumb drive. FYI, if the OTG plugin for Solid Explorer doesn't appear to work, there are a few more steps to be done such as granting access after selecting the your removable USB storage from the built-in file explorer.
You need this Meenova Type-C to MicroUSB OTG cable works will for DAC on Type-C phone.

this adapter seems to work with my MicroUSB flash drives

now I can't seem to flash ROMs from OTG in TWRP, though...I think I've only sucessfully flashed BrokenOS from OTG. Everything else flashes if flashed from internal storage. I like to flash from OTG because I occasionally like to wipe internal storage once a month (when I was on the OPO)

Hi, we you able to connect your dslr to your 6p through a usb otg? I can't, and i don't know why. No USB storage works for me with the otg cable and i can't connect to my dslr. I've also received a replacement otg cable from Fosmon because i thought the first one was faulty, but no luck.
Never used to be a problem with my previous Nexus devices.
