I am a android smartphone first time user (Samsung S4)
1) What are the things that you should do to the phone? (antivirus? best settings?...)
2) How do you setup contacts (save to SIM/phone...?)
Thanks
Well I just add Google account the gmail one
And thennstart adding the contacts in phone always its default and it will ask you to save in your gmail account .so that it will back up there and next time you format the phone you just need to enter your gmail account that's it.
As for setting play a little..
And never used any kind of antivirus never in need of apps that's make my phone performance slow

I upgraded from incred 1 to 2 and now when I add contacts to the phone I dont get the option to associate them with my mail account like I used to, with that now they are not stored in my gmail desktop. So if I do anything with this phone or lose it all of my recently added contacts will be gone. How do I fix this??
When you create a contact does it ask you which account? Like for mine is asks gmail, exchange (work account), or phone unsynced.
Also you can check your gmail settings that it is syncing contacts.
In gmail: Hit menu, press accounts, press menu again, press account settings, select your gmail account and make sure sync contacts is checked.

No its not offerig me that option, I used my main G-Email account to set up the phone, I have the contacts checked in sync in that account
Anyone else??/ I hate to go to the VZw store.. as usually I know more then they do
Did you get this fixed. When I add contacts they are automatically add it to my google account. When you say contacts do you mean email or do you mean the persons phone number and name.
How are you trying to add your contacts.

Im trying to add phone #s. In the past I would be prompted to to chose which gmail account I wanted to associate the contact with. Now it just stores it to the phone without offering me the option.
Fixed?? not really, what I have been doing is exporting them to to the sim or SD, then importing them to the google account kind of a pain. thanks for responding.
From what I've noticed on some non sense roms, when I add contacts they are automatically added to my Google account. Maybe HTC took that option out if you dont have multiple account on there. Seems like a stupid option.
"Would you like your contacts to persist thru diifferent rom's/devices or do you want them to be lost everytime you reset your phone (or manually back them up)?"
I use Google to host my email account for business. Since my Eris the contacts have been backing up to my Email account, now with this phone its not so easy.
Are you using sense or aosp?

Hi ...am about to receive my first android device ..NEXUS 4 (moving from nokia 5233) . Can anyone point me how can i get my gmail account ready so that I will have all the phone numbers and images associated with the contacts on the NEXUS on day one.
I have downloaded all the contacts from my phone. I was wondering if there was some software which will pull down all the information(email, birthday, photo) from the facebook and gmail to my system so that i can review and prepare them for the NEXUS 4.
Any other thing which I can do before it arrives will be great. :silly:
https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#contacts
You may add, import/export them there. From that point on, a Android device will sync with Google Contacts and sync them.
Facebook.. download FB app and u can sync it with FB (cant do it off the phone)
Apps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992163 good list to work off of to prepare what you want in terms of apps.
Want to root? Check out a sticky on how to do it (please dont use the toolkit method).
I suggest fastboot oem unlock (unlocking bootloader) day one. So if you do decide to root or flash a custom rom, kernel you can keep your settings. Whereas, if you decide not to unlock bootloader and want to flash--you will lose your settings and have to start over.
Recommended app if you want to play with your phone; Titanium Backup Pro (backup and restores apps/data)
First steps...

If you are currently using GMail to manage all of your contacts, you transition will be a snap. Since an Android device is so intimately linked with Google, all of that information will show up natively, assuming you sign into the same GMail account with the new phone.
Otherwise, if all of your contacts are in a different format, such as a CSV file or another contact file format, you will likely want to import them to your Google account using your PC, instead of your phone. Signing into Gmail will allow you to access a Contacts section where you will be able to upload a file to import all of your contact to your Google account. The Contacts section is a bit hidden; it is within a drop down menu, near the top left of the page, just under the GMail logo.
Good luck!

I have all the contacts listed in my google contacts but most of them dont have phone numbers associated with it. I have merged the contacts which were on my mobile.
Is there anyway i can pull phone numbers from facebook page along with their pictures so that i can save them to my gmail account. I know most my contacts will have their phone numbers in Facebook page .
is there some kind of scrapper so that I can at least get my close friends pics and numbers

What your asking for like I said before is syncing your contacts with Facebook, it is done through the face book app. It cannot be done without you having access to a Android device

I suggest using haxsync to sync your Facebook contacts. It has way more options and customizations than the normal Facebook app and also supports Facebook calendar syncing.

Ok, so I got a new Nexus 4 and started it.
It asked me for my gmail account which I entered. However after the initial setup was completed I was shocked to find my phonebook contacts exactly the same as my old phone on my Nexus 4.
Does anyone know how did Google get hold of my phone contacts ?
Few things:
- The contacts I see on the phone are not gmail contacts. I have 400+ gmail contacts. The contacts I automatically got on the phone were the exact contacts in my previous Android phone (HTC HD2 rooted with ICS CM Nexus ROM)
- In my old phone I never synched contacts. I always had mail checked in sync settings. Calendar, contacts etc were not checked.
- I also own a Nexus 7 tab and that does not have any setting to store contacts.
- When I ordered the phone I selected the option to not link it to any google account.
Any idea ?
Well, phone contacts have been synced to your Google account for a long time now. You must have synced them at least once on your old phone.
Must have synced to your account before you turned off contacts sync.
It's possible that they're saved on your SIM Card.

While that is certainly a possibility but I am skeptical of that because
- As a practice I never sync anything except EMAIL on my gmail, hotmail, yahoo accounts. everything else is unchecked.
- My phone contacts are not synced with hotmail or yahoo but appear to be only on gmail even though I had the same settings across all accounts.
- There are contacts I have on my gmail which I didnt have on my previous phone. These are not present on the new Nexus 4.
you probably synced it on ur old phone when u flashed ics, since default is to sync when you got ur contacts back on ur old phone it probably didnt automatically
google didnt "steal" your info or anything unless you think of what they do with info as stealing
contact sync is actually awesome and really helpful, i wouldnt see this as a bad thing if i were u but everyone has their own opinions
thanks for the replies so far.
While I agree it is a good feature to have, but I use a third party app to achieve this or do export to SD and then import from SD to back up contacts.

Just use Google contacts, and unless you're some kind of super spy or something and foreign governments are hacking your contacts because everyone you know is so important.

When you initially setup an android phone it asks you if you want to backup and sync your data with Google's servers and you've must have done this before in the past. I also think contact sync is set to on by default its in settings>accounts>google>[email protected] I actually like the feature as all my apps and contacts are automatically downloaded to a new phone right at the start.
I have a Nexus 4 with two google accounts on it(one is hotmail the other gmail). On my primary account i have all my apps and stuff the other account is just for email. On that secondary account I have by mistake installed few apps that I uninstalled. Now when ever I want those apps to install on my primary account it always shows that is gonna be installed on the secondary acc. where I installed it the first time, even when i select the primary account in play store.I tried everything delete cache and data from play store nothing helps. Can anybody help?I always have some problems with this app store bugs, errors bla bla I hate it.

When you say you tried selecting the right account, do you mean on the phone or via PC? I'd try it on your PC if you haven't already.
Yea on the phone....
The installation is not importend in this...I mean just why does this happen??is this normal or some kind of bug....even when i delete all history of previous apps on that account it still shows that account when I want to install the app with my primary account.
can anyone help??
It happens to my old s3 too. It always asks for accessing my facebook account after I setup my Samsung account. Is there a way to disable it other than deleting Samsung account?
I've tried to login with FB password. But it adds Samsung to 3rd party apps on fb,if I remove it, it shows up on my phone again

+1, I'm hoping we can freeze something using Titanium to stop it
Hello ! I had the same problem. If your phone is rooted, you can use Titanium Backup and freeze the SNS app (the one with a Facebook icon). It worked for me.
Envoyé depuis mon Snanfoïde n7000
You can try to switch off sns app from settings, application manager, swipe to the left till you see "All", scroll down to sns app, switch off from there
