- Check the Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Auto network switch?
- Or you may need to update to the latest firmware?

It's always off!

Same for me
I am on EE in the UK using an S5 and this is my second one, have you found any fixes?

Elmer we have 2 S5s on EE with the same problem. One on 5.0 (has had the problem since Apr15) the other on 5.02 (has had the problem since Jan16). EE are slower than slow making updates available. EE blames Samsung; Samsung blames EE. Customer service is ABYSMAL. Very many people have this issue. And it isn't just EE or the UK.
Only ways round it is
Reboot
Engage / disengage Airplane mode
Under more networks, flip the data connection between 4G > 3G > 4G

possible way forward

Thanks for your reply, after finally receiving my letter of deadlock from EE after an 8 weeks wait the only offer to resolve the issue from EE was to swap for another S5. Therefore I have approached the communications ombudsman to resolve the issue they have agreed to represent me. In the meantime i have cancelled the remaining 6 months of my contract at a cost of £130 and started a new contract (S7). I am asking the ombudsman to claim back my early cancellation fee - if it works it may be a way forward for many others.

Hi Elmer. Thanks for your info.
It seems that loan phones from EE shops are non existent So I took my phone into Samsung's own service Centre in Wembley, but their 'fix' failed to fix.
If it helps, there is an EE community thread on this problem - Lollipop Update on S5: Intermittent mobile data. (Not sure if I can post 3rd party links here.)
My phone firmware is so out of date - a year behind without updates. 5.1 was a MAJOR security update, but EE failed in their duty to there customers to make it available. Android 6 for the S5 will be available shortly, but am not holding my breath that EE will act in a timely manner.....
Whether any of the non available updates would fix the problem is unknown.
PLEASE update us all if / when you get a determination from the Ombudsman. Is there a contact case number so I can add to the Ombudsman's action?

[Q] Little data roaming despite disabled

I have now for the second time the problem that I have many little data roaming connections while abroad, despite data roaming is deactivated in Android. They are so small (always exactly 30 kB, which seems to be the smallest quantity my provider is billing) that it's virtually impossible to produce them with normal traffic. I always have much larger data connections, even without using my phone (at least 100kB up to 1MB and even more if I use it, of course). In this case I had 9 of those connections while little more than 24h. Last time when I had this problem half a year ago, I had those connections for an entire week with the same frequency (~10 per day).
In both incidents there was an OTA update available for the Nexus 4. This time I received the update notification at some point during my stay abroad. I had wifi connection most of the time, so I assume the update was downloaded using the wifi connection (the roaming traffic is too small for the update by far). I did not install the update until I returned back home. Last time my phone wasn't able to download the OTA update, since I had a custom rom installed at that time. It is possible that it tried downloading the OTA update for the entire stay back then (and even before and after - I noticed increased traffic over normal mobile internet at home). I switched back to the stock rom a while ago and thus was now able again to receive official OTA updates.
This time I was staying for 8 days in Chile, last time was around one week of Italy. My provider is Orange Switzerland.
What can be the cause of this? I am absolutely certain that data roaming was disabled in Android both times. Could it be that Android somehow bypasses the disabled roaming when checking for OTA updates? But it would have to do it when already knowing there is an update, so what's the point of doing this? Or could it be a provider initiated connection to notify the phone of the update? What can I do to prevent this from happening in future?
Thanks for any input!
Martin
Are you disabling mobile data and roaming or just roaming?
You could also try deleting or changing your default apn to prevent this from happening.
When I travel outside of Canada, I do not incurr any roaming charges when I turn off mobile data and roaming,
Thanks for the reply. I just disabled data roaming. I am abroad quite a lot, apart from these two incidents I never had any unexpected roaming charges. It must be somehow connected to the OTA update.
I will try disabling mobile data next time, maybe also disabling updates. But I also would like to understand how this can happen. Would it actually be possible that my provider initiates data connections to push the update notification? On the other hand my phone doesn't make those connections all the time, so it cannot just be the regular checking for updates. If it just received the notification via wifi, it would have downloaded the update via wifi immediately. So there must be some kind of mechanism I do not understand.
I also noticed that some of those roaming data connections occurred during the night, when I actually had wifi in the hotel for sure. This doesn't make any sense to me at all...
I don't want to take a chance so I disable all data connections, including roaming, as well as sync, software and app updates, and anything else I can think of that might try to access the data network.
Disabling sync etc. is not an option, since I want to use it via wifi. Besides, this must be either a bug in the Android update mechanism (which is persistent over some versions apparently) or my provider is doing something stupid. In the first case I would like to inform the devs, in the second case I won't pay for the data roaming, since I wouldn't be responsible for it.
Any ideas how to find out which one is true? Is here by chance anyone who either
a) has received a bill with many very small data roaming connections despite roaming was disabled while an OTA update was rolled out, or
b) was on the contrary abroad while the OTA update was rolled out and received the update notification via wifi, and has not seen any such roaming connections on the bill?
Thank you very much!
Wow, I can't even imagine worrying about overages and roaming charges... T-Mobile FTW!
Which custom ROM are you running? If it's not stock, there shouldn't be anything that has to do with an OTA, unless that functionality is not removed for some odd reason. Does the data usage utility show any useful information?

I am on stock right now. During the first incident I ran some stock ROM, but I no longer remember which one. The data usage shows me Android OS would have transferred a 15.65 KB.
Edit: T-Mobile has no roaming charges if you are outside the US?
Have the same problem. Just one week ago I was on holiday. They also charged me twice for a 30 KB connection on different days (Orange Swizerland). I first thought it's maybe because I installed a custom rom but it also happened to my brother whose phone is 100% stock.
Did you found a solution?

Interesting. So it is an Orange problem after all...

Not really. I now disabled the OTA update service (using the disable service app), so this cannot happen any more (I believe). Also I will switch to another provider at the end of this month, so if Orange is doing something strange, I will no longer be affected.
Same thing happened to me this month on my Nexus 6P on android 7.1
It used between 0.00mb and 0.04 mb (according to my data usage logs from the telephone company) (Telus)
Any other person figured out how this could happen and what's the solution?
had this last month. On Oreo 8.1 Stock + root Essential Phone (see here for details) https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/help/data-roaming-charges-despite-disabled-t3796715

Mobile data problem

Sadly its become apparent that something is wrong with my Yota 2, when losing the network signal when out in the sticks it will not reconnect mobile data when I'm back within decent network coverage, the voice and SMS work okay but the mobile data doesn't, even if i get full signal bars. Toggling Bluetooth and mobile data make no difference. The only cure is to turn the phone off an on then it fine until the next time.
I've checked my 3 UK APN settings and they are all as expected.
I've contacted yota support an they want me to send it to their service partner (premiere eurocom ) I have to send it at my expense and wait their diagnosis.....but I'm not sure how yota will be billed for this.
Has anyone else experienced the problem?
I'll try a factory reset before I send it, just in case...
Sent from my YD201 using XDA Free mobile app
I didn't encounter such problems so far. I was a bit worried a few days ago, as my Yotaphone kept losing the GSM connection entirely (I was back to the PIN code input screen multiple times every day), but then it also did happen on my good old Ericsson t39m, so I suspect it was more an issue with the local GSM network.
Can you try with another SIM card (maybe even another carrier) to see if this happens regardless of the carrier?
Did you change something (apps, settings...) on your phone recently? I'm asking just in case, you certainly thought about that already, so don't get offended by such a basic question!
No worries.....Thanks for the input, what network are you on?
I tried a factory reset and that didn't make any difference, that should eliminate any fiddling or dodgy apps too, I tried the Sim back in my HTC One and it behaved perfectly in there, upon returning it to the Yotaphone I lost data comm twice in a matter of hours only reaquiring after turning the device off and on. I also double checked the Three UK apn settings and they are as they should be. I could try another network as nano sim are few and far between!
I've now returned it at my own expense (Thanks Yotaphone!) To their repair partner Premiere Eurocomm, I'm not sure what will happen now as for all I know it will pass their testing in their repair labs, I'm hoping they will just send a new device .

Update......
I received a new phone under warranty, I set it all up and sadly exactly the same problem occurred. (Passing through an area of poor or no network service, the mobile data (3g or LTE) will not reconnect until the device is switched off and on again)
I now believe this is an incompatibility between Three UKs mobile data network and The Yotaphone firmware/hardware.
To crudely test this I bought a Vodafone payg sim and carried both my phones with me and these are my findings
HTC One M7 & Three UK sim......no problems.
HTC One M7 & Vodafone sim.....no problems.
Yotaphone 2 & Vodafone sim.......no problems.
Yotaphone 2 & Three UK sim....fails to reconnect.
So my options no seem to be;
Try for a refund on the device.
Change network to Vodafone.
Wait for a fix from Yota.
So I'll call the support line later today and see what they say. Could any UK users let me know what network you are on and if you have any similar problems please?

Sorry for the delayed answer...
I'm using the Orange (France) network at home without any particular issue, the troubles only happen (so far) when I'm traveling abroad, which I frequently do for work.
I'll try to list more precisely which carriers are subject to network connection issues, although it's not easy to see which carrier you're roaming with (on my old Ericsson phone, the carrier name is displayed prominently on the screen, whereas you've got to dig in the menus on an Android phone to get the carrier's name...
Okay so I called yota support an updated them and as expected they just blamed Three, so only after asking for a refund did the agent pass the problem onto Yota for more technical help, I won't hold my breath waiting for contact but if nothing by the end of next week then I will be insisting on a refund. kind of spoiled my fun this has
Sent from my YD201 using XDA Free mobile app
It would be a shame if they don't seize the opportunity to further dig into the subject and find out the technical cause. After all, they aim at a worldwide distribution of the Yotaphone 2, don't they? And it'd be a shame to see you go, too...
An update.....
I've not heard anything from Yota support but have made progress myself, I discovered in the mobile networks settings that you can select your network manually rather than automatic, by doing this two options for Three appear in the list, Three and Three UK.
I selected Three UK and since doing that the problem has not happened at all over three days of using the phone, including passing through the areas of no network coverage that would trigger the problem.
I'm hoping this is fixed.
Footnote: whilst sorting this problem I've been using my HTC One that has had its lollipop update and I'm loving the lollipop, can't wait to get it on the Yota

Any more updates? Got my phone today and got the same problem.
I got Tele 2 in Sweden and it wont connect to 4G. It will get 3G connection but very weak signal and it will disconnect and reconnect atleast once each 5 minutes.
I did also set network in manual mode and it works better but not as to expect from a phone.
Im also going to try with another carrier but im kinda locked to my current one...
On a side note, I've had twice an issue with SMS and the YotaPhone 2.
I've received the same message over and over about 50 times, usually separated by a minute, but sometimes the message shows up again only after a couple of hours...
Not a big deal, but annoying nonetheless. I suspect that the local phone network (in Congo) is to blame, but I'd be curious to know if this has already happened to anyone else, as my other phone(s) do not display such behavior. I usually have the "Welcome to XXX network" SMS repeated a couple of times, too, in those situations, though usually not more than three or four times.

Please whats their customer care mail or phone number ive been searching all over for it my phone just died as well.
I'm having exactly the same problem, I've had my phone for three days and it already happened twice. Putting the phone on airplane mode does not solve it; I have to restart the phone. I only lose data connectivity, but I get signal and I can call just fine. Btw, I'm using the YD206 version with Jazztel in Spain.
I'll try now with the manual network selection and ser if the problem dissapears.

Hello,
I have more or less the same problem ... but with no real solutions
After upgrading MM I lost the LTE signal but not all the time.
When I start my phone I have the LTE signal with good bandwith and good quality of reception.
After some time (5min, 15min, ... no really logic) or every time after driving with my car and I expect changing Emettor many time, I loose the data. I have no more LTE, H+, 3G etc... no more data and I loose a lot of quality of signal like my "modem" lost a lot of range of signal available.
I Flash and reflash MM and no solution.
When selection manually the operator, it change Nothing for me
When I change APN with a new one (2 APN are available for data (for french people SLSFR and WEBSFR)) the data is coming back but just few time.
When I come back the the first APN, data is not coming back until restarting the phone.
I have a third APN but with only 3G connection and with this one, I have no problem. Data is always available...
Really Strange. The problem is only due to LTE signal
For this moment, I will try with Lolipop if the problem don't occur anymore.

Hi Benetnath,
I find no issue with SFR.
I spoke with the customer service and they don't find any problem on the network.
I read a lot of forum and it seems that the problem is not only on Yotaphone but on lot of quite "old" phone.
They change some parameter on the network (what, I don't know, is it regarding the fact that we can travel everywhere yet in Europe using our data mobile...)
You can easyly find some post with looking about "SFR data probleme sl2sfr oneplus" through google
I expect that the problem is only on SFR but I can't be 100% sure.
Due to the problem seems to be a network "problem" or french network parameter, I think we will never have any answer or solution. It is sure that yet we will have no more update on yotaphone.
The only one solution I can give you today (avoiding changing operator ) is to use only the APN : Wapsfr
With this APN you will never be connected in 4G but only in 3G. No problem with cost or anything else (pas de risque de hors forfait) but in my case, the reception quality is really better in 4G with 800Mhz frequency that 3G in 2600MHz I believe.
Without 4G I can't receive anything inside my house.
I will keep you and the forum in touch if I find a solution.
Changing to an another operator is not so easy because for low price all the alternative operator like laposte mobile, pristel, NRJ or some other are often on SFR network with the same APN (so I suppose the same problems)
It is maybe also because SFR launched the VOLTE in June and the problem is more or less since this date.
VOLTE is maybe the problem ? When I receive a call I lose the data and she is not coming back

Hi, I have the same problem. And I think the problem go from Free : Before I had SFR and Bouygues, I never saw the problem.
Sometimes, just activate the plane mode, and desactivate it, and the LTE comming back. but another time, I have to reboot the Yota.
Hello xNiux;
With Free, I found also lot of data connection problem on Google.
The main problem with Free is that the mobile should sometime connect to a Free emettor and sometime to Orange.
So maybe your phone is not connected on the good emettor and it is the reason you lose your data connection. I can't be sure because I have not Free Mobile but it is what I wrote.
==> Maybe can you go to "choose operator" and select only Free...
For SFR it is a quite new issue, around june. Before I expected that it was a wrong ROM when I uploaded my phon to MM but it is not the reason.
Even with choosing manually the operator or use airplane mode, nothing is working. I need to restart or open/close my SIM card.
I make a "call" to the RED team to find a solution.
They wrote me this morning that now everything is fine and work well... but this morning I lose another time the connection.
For the moment :
Free is not working with Yotaphone
RED/ SFR is not working with Yotaphone
To be check with Bouygue or Orange to maybe choose an another operator ( I don't want to change my phone)

No data after having WiFi enabled for a while

Hello,
I've had this issue across more than 1 device and more than 1 carrier.
Here's what happens:
I enable WiFi, and for a while everything works as expected. I can send and receive MMS messages. I can disable WiFi and go back to my 4G connection.
The problem is, after an unknown amount of time, the phone drops the 4G connection in the background. I only know when I can't receive/send MMS messages anymore. At that point, if I disable WiFI there's no 4G data connection, and I have to turn Airplane mode off and turn it back on.
This is really annoying. It happened to me using Sprint and a Galaxy S4 (both stock and custom ROMs) and it's happening to me with a Galaxy S5 from MetroPCS. (I've used the stock Metro ROMs, Stock T-mobile ROMs, and Custom T-mobile ROMs).
Right now I'm using a Stock T-mobile ROM with the latest firmware, carrier is MetroPCS.
What can I do so this doesn't happen? It's really frustrating.
Thank you for your time.

Hello.
That's already disabled.
Should I enable it?
I tried with "smart network switch" enabled and disabled and problem still happened.
My S5 G900F Android 5.00 (Smart Network Switch disabled, Power Save disabled) on EE UK has had this problem for 9 months after phone upgraded itself to Lollipop (EE win the accolade to being the SLOWEST ON THE PLANET to provide Android updates.....). Since Jan 3, my wife's G901, a couple of weeks after it upgraded from 5.0 to 5.02, has developed the same problem. Neither phone has ever been rooted or other.
I have fruitlessly searched everywhere for a solution without success. EE Customer Services Tier 2 & Samsung's own service centre have failed to fix it. EE & Samsung blame each other for 5.1 or 5.1.1 not being available for download. Neither is prepared to resolve the issue despite hours on the phone. Have tried Safe Mode, Factory Reset, clearing everything, reloading APNs & Samsung even reloaded Android. All a waste of time: Many many days of it!
After approx half an hour connected to Wi-Fi, only way to get the mobile data to connect, is either reboot, enter & exit Air-plane mode or flip the 4G > 3G > 4G connection under More Networks. Have tested the fault in different cell areas countries and continents; fault is same everywhere.
It seems there are quite a few sufferers of this problem.
Samsung S5 keeps losing data connection
I have the same problem. My new Samsung phone loses the data connection (even though data is turned on) and I can only re-connect by restarting the phone. The first EE shop I took it to couldn't help at all. The second gave me a new SIM - that didn't work. Then I tried online support and after 3.5 hours of my life, in which I was passed on from one person to another, they completed a factory re-set - which didn't work (and additionally lost all the personalisation of my screen and some of my contacts). So I now have a not-very-smart phone which I have to re-start every time I want to use data. This is a business contract and the phone is less than two months old, but I'm not getting any effective support from EE. Android version is 5.0.2
me too, since last update. and app 'phono' shows "mobile data off" not got a time on it, but when i leave wifi coverage, it wont reconnect to cell data 2g/3g/4g. flightmode toggle to restore.
Abandon hope if you have this intermittent mobile data problem!
...at least until there is a software update, though I have no idea if that will help.
I have now tried a new sim card, a factory reset, and a replacement phone - which was provided only because I'm a business customer and I found a sympathetic member of staff. *By the way, I was told that if you are personal customer they won't consider replacing your phone if it is more than a month old - even if you started complaining about the phone as soon as you got it, the chances are a month will have elapsed by the time they put you through the hoops of a new sim, reset etc - and then it is too late to insist on a replacement phone.
In any case the replacement phone didn't resolve the issue so I have reached* a dead end. My phone fails to connect to data after having been connected to wifi - you have to do it manually each time you move away from a wifi connnection. At first I was doing it by restarting the phone, but am now following the advice of someone else who has the same problem and am going into flight mode and out again. *
This is not satisfactory, and it seems from reading forums that EE are to blame for the problem rather than Samsung, but I'm not 100% sure about that.*
Possible solution that works, for me, at the moment!
Having suffered this issue of my S5 (SM-G901F) not connecting to mobile data after being on Wi-Fi for a while unless switching airplane mode on/off for a few weeks; although it has probably been happening since the update I received late December; I have tried all of the turn this switch off, factory resets (x2), etc, etc, etc. and Googled the issue without success.
I have found this thread interesting, and I even tried calling EE support only to be told "you have tried everything that we would tell you to do" and "it wouldn't be a sim card, or handset issue, sounds like software". The reply was basically that like-it or lump it until the 5.1 update is released "by Samsung not EE because EE do not release Android updates". [Perhaps EE don't release the updates, but the stock rom is tested by them and their bloatware added before they eventually release it!!!]
Following my last reset I tried selectively re-installing the apps I used incase that was causing the issue. No Luck!
One last thing I tried was to look at every system 'thing' that I could find which used/switched any part of the mobile/mobile data/wifi - in addition to the settings I had already tried (all of which were mentioned in this thread previously). One thing I could not find not mentioned here, or anywhere, was the VoWi-Fi call on/off which I had always set to on as I do not live in a great reception area. Calling over Wi-Fi is great when you don't have a strong mobile signal.
Having 'played' with this setting for the last 24 hours I have found that the VoWi-Fi on/off appears to be a possible cure - for me anyway.:fingers-crossed:
When VoWi-Fi was set to off and leaving the phone connected to Wi-Fi overnight, the S5 immediately switched to mobile data this morning when I turned the Wi-Fi off . It continued to switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data all morning whilst out and about in and out of Wi-Fi connections - Woop Woop!!!
I then tried switching VoWi-Fi on (with Wi-Fi on and at home), leaving the phone for a number of hours, only to find that when I turned Wi-Fi off the phone refused to connect to mobile data even with a 'decent' mobile signal. The only way to get it to connect was to go back to switching Airplane mode on/off.
Switched VoWi-Fi off again, left Wi-Fi connected, left the phone for a couple of hours, etc. and hey-presto immediately switched to mobile data when I turned the Wi-Fi off. [Dances around the room because he's got the S5 automatically switching to mobile data again. Even though I'm at home with a great fibre internet and strong Wi-Fi connection!!!]
I do not know if this could be a solution for the others who are suffering from this issue, but it appears to be a solution for me at the moment. I thought I would share as your previous posts have helped me and you all seem to be pulling your hair out; like I have been; trying to find a solution.
Try it, it may work, but don't shoot me if it doesn't!
It's encouraging to know that I'm not crazy. I've had this issue across two devices and carries.
John,
Thank for your suggestion about WiFi calling. Unfortunately, I always have it off! I never used it, so maybe I should try turning it on? We'll see lol.
At this point, I think this is going to be my last Galaxy line phone.
Is it wi-fi calling that's causing the problem?
I have wondered if there is a link with wi-fi calling, but haven't tested it properly. I signed up with ee and bought the Galaxy phone specifically so that I could use wifi calling, as the town where I live (in the Scottish Borders) doesn't get a mobile signal strong to work reliably indoors from any of the networks. I'll try turning off wi-fi calling to see if that sorts the data thing (though I see that for one person above it did not). That would mean I wouldn't get calls or texts when I'm at home so it would not be a permanent solution for me. But in fact the wi-fi calling is not reliable anyway....

PH-1 switching from wifi to LTE issue

Hello.
I bought my PH-1 last week on Amazon, last week. I'm in France (carrier Free Mobile) and I experience the issue with LTE signal. It is OK usually. Outside i have a good signal, when I arrive at home it's switching on Wifi automaticly. But when I'm leaving home LTE is not booting up automaticly. I waited for almost 5 minutes and no data. I solved by turnning on/off the plane mode but it is a annoying to do 2-3 times per day(almost each time when I'm leaving home). Do somebody had the same issue ? I don't know what to do. Would essential patch this or maybe the best would be to return the phone.
Thanks in advance

My phone is on T-Mobile carrier and when I am outside phone is using LTE or another available technology. When I come hope, phone connects to my WiFi. After I leave the my home, phone connects to cell tower without problems. You may need to check APN settings for your carrier in Mobile network settings.

Hi koko.fr,
Like you, i bought my PH-1 on Amazon and i use it with Free Mobile Carrier, the APN settings are automatically updated. I used one day the 7.1.1 Android version and my feeling is not good with this (lag, camera, latency with touchscreen) but not the same issue that you. I upgrade the Oreo 8.0 Beta 3 and I'm very happy, the phone is very responsive. This upgrade is very easy, all steps are indicated on Essential web site.
What Android version are you ?
Have a nice day

I use default Android 7.1.1 (I have also some issues like camera lag, but phone is very fast for other apps), I checked my APN settings and manually updated but I still have the same issue... I'm disappointed about Essential updates (no date for 8.1 ), I don't want to use beta to not lose my warranty.
So I think I will return the phone tomorrow and maybe come back for PH-2
Did beta Oreo improve camera experience ?

My APN settings are updated automatically when I put FREE SIM card and I'm not an issue with this, I'm glad that you are this issue This is my first Android phone and I'm very happy with this. I don't think that you lose your warranty if you sideload the Essential oreo beta, 8.0 beta 3 or 8.1. This is an official beta of oreo. You are read that if we upgrade our phone with an official Essential beta, we lose warranty? Unfortunately, i think we have not warranty because we do not live in US or Canada. We can just ask Amazon to return the phone and ask refund but we lose the extra cost and import charges.
For your issue, you can test a factory reset?
I would like to post an URL to go to Essential support but i can't, not any old on this site
I hope you will be able to resolve your issue
Not sure if you tried, development section- option to aggressively switch from wifi to data. I never tried it but remember seeing it.

AT&T forcing me to abandon my Galaxy S8!

Hello,
I am new to this site, and have a burning question I am trying to find an answer for.
So AT&T has been my carrier since about 2014. In July of 2019, I purchased an unlocked S8 from Amazon for about $350 Description says it is: Samsung Galaxy S8 64GB Factory Unlocked Smartphone - US Version (Midnight Black) - US Warranty - [SM-G950UZKAXAA]. In the settings, the model number is listed as: SM-G950U1.
Recently, I received a message from AT&T saying that they are shutting down their 3G network in February of 2022, and that my phone will no longer work on their network. I went into one of their stores and showed them that my phone operates on LTE, but I was told that is for data only and voice operates on 3G. I could not remember the VoLTE name at the time, but mentioned that my phone had the capability to operate on LTE. They refused to go thru settings with me, and told me that my phone will stop working in February. Period. End of story. Also, I was told the same thing that the message states, that they are sending me a new phone and will be deactivating my phone after 30 days.
Now some of my friends are laughing at me saying, "Dang free phones!" But I do not want a 5G phone (which is obviously what they are sending). I have my reasons and this is not what I wish to discuss here.
The issue is... I love my telephone!! It does exactly what I want, and I don't need anything new. Not to mention that I paid for it entirely, with no subsidy from AT&T. I specifically bought it unlocked with intentions of avoiding contracts and having the ability to switch carriers if I so choose.
I am pretty sure that I saw VoLTE mentioned in my settings a while back. But now a search on my phone finds nothing. I assume a firmware update hid this info from me.
So... what gives? Does anybody here know if this particular device can make/receive voice calls using VoLTE - on AT&T (or any other carriers) - simply by changing settings in the phone? Do I have any options to make my phone continue to operate as intended? With any carrier?
Sorry for the long post. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Steve

Please let me know if this works. I thought about doing the same thing, but have not gotten around to trying it. In theory, it sounds like a solid plan. But I have a couple of concerns.
During a recent phone call, AT&T told me their system has flagged my IMEI and that my phone will stop working very soon. So, if the system flagged an IMEI as an unsupported device, will it even matter which firmware is installed? Or will their system just deactivate the phone at some point?
Second, if you install the 950U firmware in place of the 950U1, will the device become carrier locked at this point? That would really suck if it did.
BTW, I was able to lock preferred network to “LTE only” by dialing *#*#4636#*#* and entering Device information screen. Unfortunately, my phone would not complete a call when using LTE only setting. VoLTE provisioned toggle is greyed out, along with others. Seems to me that if a guy could self provision VoLTE, this would solve the issue.
I called AT&T tech support and spent 45 minutes trying to get them to provision VoLTE, but they could not, or would not do it. At first, they kept telling me that my phone is a 3G phone. I argued that I could change the radio to “LTE only” and that my sim card status showed LTE for “mobile voice network type”, which proves that the phone is indeed LTE capable for voice calls - but that it will not complete a call because it is not provisioned to do so. Eventually they told me that their system would not allow them to provision VoLTE for me, since it is flagged as an unsupported device. Which leads back to the first part of this post.
I also found some stuff on reddit about putting the phone into “engineering mode” and something about a Samsung tool that unlocks additional dialer codes. Have not tried this, tho.
At this point, I am just completely fed up with AT&T for this whole S8 situation, as well as other unrelated issues. I will most likely switch carriers for principle’s sake, even though I know other carriers play similar games.
Anyway, I am interested in whether or not you find a solution and would very much like to hear about it. Thank you for the response!!

Hi, I'm Newbie around here. I'd like to share my experience with ATT and my beloved S8+ this past few months:
Much like you and many others I started receiving texts from ATT by mid 2021 saying my phone would not work after Feb '22. Yes, every time they suspended my line I wasted 30~ 40 mins on the phone, listening how they would insist my S8+ was a 3G phone. It didn't matter that I offered to send them screenshots of my device showing the "VoLTE option" and "4G LTE" while both in the USA and Mexico. Thing is, they only based their saying on a st....id whitelist and all the reps are just talking heads.
I use an S8+ international version which is NOT on the dreaded list. and I am on the 300/year prepaid plan which allows roaming between Mexico and USA with no 50/50 usage limit.
I bought this phone on amazon for 350-ish bucks a couple of years ago and I love it!
I have to cross the Mexico/USA border very frequently and I need two separate numbers one on each country for business reasons so dual sim is a must. On the other hand, I receive lots and lots of phone calls while driving, this made me crave for android 8.1 when call recording was allowed by google, not the case anymore. None of these 2 features are available on the S8/S9 US based phones. I do not need 5G, I do not use social media nor watch videos on my phone but do get to use Pandora, Spotify, MLB radio and so on......... Enter SM-G955F/DS. I was able to change Samsung's CSC code to Israel so call recording is active for all those notes I cannot write down while driving and I get to carry just one device with 2 separate numbers thanks to a dual sim.
Ok, so back to my phone not being on the f... list :
Around Feb 10th, I got yet another email and SMS telling me it was my last opportunity to change or I MAY be disconnected after 2/22/22 ( funny choice of date huh?). I noticed that words on email and text messages had been changed from WILL NOT on Jul/2021 to MAY NOT work on Feb/2022. Since I know for a fact that my phone is VoLTE capable, I figured my S8+ would work as long as AT&T did not intentionally disconnected my line.
So, I took a crappy phoenix ATT phone and updated it's IMEI on my account via the ATT prepaid webpage. After getting "approval" from ATT's system, I put the SIM card in and used it for a full weekend. After that, I put the SIM card back to my S8+ and it is still going strong to date.
Today is March 1st, and I have been weary of ATT sneaking me out of their system but fortunately it has not happened yet. Needless to say, I have not updated my S8's IMEI on ATT's webpage and do not intend to do so.
Now, This "proves" that my phone is indeed capable of using VoLTE and HD , and all those things ATT said it would not do is just plain B.S.. if they disconnect me down the road I would definitely move to T Mobile although I would have some issues with the 50/50 international roaming and I still have 8 months left on my prepaid annual plan with ATT so, keeping my fingers crossed.
AT&T just wants to make more money out of selling new 5G devices while getting rid of their stocked 4G phones.
I wouldn't mind if they just plain out stated " If you do not buy from ATT then ATT will not support your device and will not sell service to you" then again, it would probably be a PR nightmare for them although they do that for WIFI calling anyways.
Ain't it funny how 2/22/22 is coincidentally a paycheck's time ( 2 weeks) after a new flagship phone (S22) was made available for purchase ?
Anyways, enough for ranting and conspiracy theories lol...
I have taken out and put back to my S8+ the SIM card two times in the past 9 days after 2/22/22 and my service is still in good standing.
Maybe if you got a new replacement phone that you don't like, you may swap back your SIM card and it MAY work just like mine is even if it is NOT ON THE INFAMOUS WHITE LIST.

Yep... AT&T is full of it. I got sick of wasting my time and energy trying to fight this. I eventually just switched over to TMo, and I have been running around with my S8's radio set to LTE only. No issues whatsoever. Great cell service, $30 bucks a month cheaper, all fees included in the flat rate, and a free Netflix account, to boot.
See ya AT&T!!! I hope some group with the the gumption and time takes you to court for your deceptive trade practices. I hope you lose lots of customers, time, and money for your douchery!!!
Has anyone looked into potentially using ODIN to use AT&T's firmware on the unbranded G950U1 without rooting to see if it adds the VoLTE software feature? Does anyone know if that flashing will disable (permanently break) samsung pay? I don't want any rooting since that will permanently break samsung pay on the hardware.
