Using S4 Without a Case [Need Advice] - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i bought a brand new Galaxy S4 19505 and i totally love the feel and the look of my new device. I bought and applied a glass screen protector to it which keeps the display crystal clear and provides a great protection to the front glass in case of drops or something. The thing is that i bought two cases for the phone, an iFace case and a hardshell case. I used each of them for a week and i couldn't handle it anymore as the phone looks ugly and it adds too much bulk. I removed the case today and again i really like this original look and feel.
So my question is, since i am a careful user and i don't drop my phones should i use the S4 without a case? Is the glass screen protector enough?
I need responses from people who have used their phones naked for a good time.
Thanks in advance.

Glass screen protector does the trick if you drop the phone face first down to something. However, if an impact happens to the side it might spread a Crack to the screen.

My S4 is 1.5 year and has no scratches at all. No display protector. Using a pouch at work and a belt bag other times. So if you are carefull it should not be a problem to keep the phone as new.

Compleatly naked is my advise!

I used my S4 with a case for months and then took the plunge, went naked. Almost instantly I dropped it outside on some concrete and it just dinged the side, I really think its just pure luck....since then I have put the case back on and just accepted it is for the best. :good:

That's the advise I might have for a phone that's cheap, but a smartphone costing hundreds of pounds (unless it's a contact phone off course), there's no way I'd use it without a case and screen protector

Well, I disagree! Would never use anything to **** up the design of the phone I have! Have NEVER had any physical damage on any on my phones over the years.
But if you're reckless and a clutz, then I guess you would need some protection!

No bulk, and nice look.

Case vs NoCase

I was so anxious about dropping\scratching my phone that I bought this huge case from amazon and now I've realized....Using a case just ****ing ruins this phone, it literally becomes a working brick (literally) also its well known that its probably the thinnest phone around, i mean forget the case yo. Anyone else agree?

I agree.
I have had an Evo, and an Evo 3D previously. Both of which I never used a cover/case on.
Then I got a small clip on case for my GSIII, but really dislike the bulkiness that it adds to the phone. I keep toying around with it, taking the case off, then putting it back on. I really am thinking of going caseless. But I do need to find a good screen protector. If I decided to do that.
I'm still debating, every time I buy cases I end up taking it off with in a few days...I already got a screen protector and I think that's all I need.

That Flip case, doesn't look like it'll protect anything if the phone was dropped.
I need a kickstand, need it. So I have a Case-Mate Pop!. It does make it brick-like when I have the phone in it.
I really really want a case cuz I'm scared to drop it. And my hands get oily and it starts slipping lmao. But then again, a case will cover up its sexiness

You don't have to get a giant otterbox, I have a tpu case and I think the little extra size to the phone is perfect and you get a little more protection from dropping.

Yeah TPU cases are good. Not really big but do give some protection. I'm looking at one of these: www.cruzerlite.com
Should be some Youtube reviews also.
Don't buy the white d30 open button case, gets dirty crazy fast, and cleaning it removes the white finish

I ended up buying one even though I don't like em because the phone seems a bit slippery to me and want to avoid dropping it.
Either way, the tpu case I bought isn't that bulky so I'm ok with it.
Powered by the SGSIII
I didn't want a case
But then I got the phone and now i'm afraid i'm going to drop it so I bought a slim TPU case and a slim TPU bumper. I may rock it without a case every now and then because this phone feels and looks great.
no case brah.
i got a free one to protect it until i get one of these

This is my solution to the whole thing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1645709 It focuses more on the screen protection than the case itself, so I'll sum it up here too.
I have found XO skin to be the best pick of wet install protection. Their skins cover any device so perfectly edge to edge that they virtually disappear. Other companies like ZAGG say they have "features" like the "orange peel effect", and that due to the fact that the Galaxy Nexus has a curved screen the shield needs to be smaller to accommodate this and there's nothing they can do. It's bull. They look like crap and it's their way of trying to hide that. XO has a full body protection option that when installed properly offers complete protection from every day nicks dings and short distance fumbles (all you can ask for from a case) that you almost forget is there. And when you do remember you show it off to people, instead of shoving your ZAGG covered phone back in your pocket in embarrassment. It still has a slight rubbery feel under hot heavy use (no innuendo intended), so I put a brand new new cheepo throw away plastic screen protector over it every couple of weeks to solve all my issues. (trust me when I say the XO Skin is completely unnoticeable underneath it. It does NOT look like you have two screen protectors on. Many people didn't believe me) I have been case free for 2 months without a care in the world about it, and my phone still looks wonderful.

I need a case. My hands are small so when I try to reach with my thumb across the screen, the base of my thumb will usually barely touch the screen causing chaos with the touchscreen. Case with raised sides that protect the screen some when dropped keep my thumb from hitting the touchscreen on the sides.
I picked up a otterbox commuter a few days ago it's was a pain to get the phone in and is a bit big but I am happy with the case and screen protector as accidents happen and it's better to protect the phone then pay $600 to replace it.

Thats the point. It replaces the battery cover and adds protection to the screen. Sure it prolly wouldn't be that great for the back but you would have an extra back cover.

[Q] Is s4screen too delicate?

All, I have been waiting to get an S4 for a while now, However it scares me to put $700 on a device which can possibly break easily & costs another $300 to fix with same risk. I have a buy/no buy decision to make for me and a few friends around me. Can we get the build of this verified & technically explained?
People say the very thin bazel transfers shock/twist tension for the digitizer to disintegrate/crack so easily.
Please advise!
For what it's worth, I've dropped mine a couple of times accidentally and I've done no damage to the screen.
I think if you handle it carefully and not treat it like a cheap and easily replaceable device you shouldn't have any worries. I do my best to take care of my phones and I've never damaged one (yet...).
I'm caseless no issues so far even I don't wear any screen protector. No scratches at all, really magic the oleophobic layer, no fingerprints!.
I recommend a bumper or similar, regarding to the really easily to scratch back cover, I know it's plastic, but $500d one!
The rest is just fine!

It really is how well you take care of your phone, obviously placing a phone in tight jeans pocket and squatting can break your phone. Also dropping it without a case can lead to the same. While it does appear that there have been several people posting bezel cracks and digitizer problems. There are alot more of us that don't have any problems. So really buying it is your decision and how you take care of it is up to you also so YMMV......
You could buy a case or a screen protector. ..

Weak screen? Yeah, it's probably weaker than most. Especially considering that there's more operating surface area on the glass and less width on the bezel side. A corner drop is instant death without a box to cover it. Still though, its hard to dislike this phone. Go back to an S2 ... it feels way too different now.

I have an Otterbox Defender, and no screen protector. For me, it's a perfect combination of protection and usability.
I do have big hands though... and as much as the GS4 is undoubtedly "prettier" naked, I actually prefer the extra "holdability" of the case.
I've dropped it lightly a few times and do I carry my phone in a separate pocket from all my other junk, but so far, absolutely no visible scratches.
Everyone's use case and preferences are different, but this setup has worked well for me so far.
I've dropped it several times. Once onto a brick floor when sitting on a chair, and once it slipped out of my pocket onto asphalt when I opened my car door. Today it slipped out of my hand onto hardwood from 4 feet or so. Every time I pretty much crapped my pants at the thought of it cracking but so far it's proven to be tough.
Had my Infuse for 2+ years caseless with no problem, so I have confidence in this phone especially seeing as how I am sure Samsung figured out how to improve the design after those problems with the S III cracking.
My mom wanted a case for hers so we got the Incipio DualPro after getting one for my dad's Xperia and its a great case. Nice feel and doesn't add too much thickness while providing great protection.
After handling all the cases at the AT&T store the Incipio was by far the best they sell there at least.
Spigen cases and GLAS.t screen protectors are also highly recommended.
Buy the phone, its awesome.
This phone so far is pretty durable from my experience. The first week I had it in a case with no screen protector. Ended up getting a small scratch on the screen so I now use one. Pretty much I haven't dropped the phone yet but as long as you take care of it you should be good. I totally recommend it, this phone is amazing!

Will my Nexus 4 be safe with these?

Like many others, I'm a little paranoid after all the horror stories I've read about our brittle, fragile little phones so I ordered a couple of defence measures, A case (I've actually ordered 2 but the one I have doesn't seem very resilient) and a screen protector, do you think these will offer sufficient protection?
Case : JKase DIABLO Series Tough Rugged Dual Layer Protection Case Cover with Build in Stand
The case I already have is the following : Nillkin Tree-Texture Slim, Snap-on / Flip Case / Cover for Google Nexus 4
Screen Protector : XGear Fantom 4 Tempered Glass Screen Protector For LG Nexus 4
The case I have is sturdy enough but I just don't trust it in case I drop the phone, the Diablo case just looks like it would protect the phone better, I have also seen another case which looks like it would protect the phone even better (will update later as I'm at work at the moment)
Just for info, this is the other case I was looking at, I watched a review on YouTube which stated that it's got really good face protection due to the moulding on the corners being more prominent.
LG NEXUS 4 BALLISTIC SHELL GEL SG SERIES CASE
Anyone tried this case and have anything to report/review?
EDIT: Just found this review on XDA I might look at getting this case depending on how the Diablo one works out
How fragile the phone is entirely depends on what you do day to day and what your friends/family/wife/husband would rate your klutzy-ness level as.
As such I have moshed at music festivals and gigs, have a walking heavy campus environment without incident (nor even a scratch) and only use a rear glass protector as the most likely thing to happen is if I hit the corner of a table or something.
To answer your question though, that case looks like it'd be fairly solid hahah.
Are you trying to make your Nexus 4 as durable as a tank or something ?
I've been using my nexus 4 now with only a Ringke Slim, and its still in mint condition.
For normal use you will never need a case like what you have, only in extreme conditions.

A tank would be nice yeah lol, I'm only stressing because I've seen stories of people dropping the phone from less than a foot high and the back shattered so I'd rather be safe than sorry, especially since it's not on a contract so we can't go running to a provider to replace it if it gets damaged.
Haha, yeah ofcourse the glass would break if you dropped it on a hard surface, face first.
You'd just ahve to be careful when you have your phone in your hand.
I personally never, ever, have dropped a smartphone and i dont plan on doing it anytime.
Just a simple bumper, or other case will protect you from fall damage.
Those cases you showed make your phone really bulky and ugly (in my opinion).

Looked like you were going to do that, when buying such a case lol.
I suggest taking a look at the Acase Super Leggerra Case. I have one, and it's just like the commuter series of otterbox. It offers good protection and looks pretty nice. Although I wouldn't get the white one. I got it, and it got dirty really easy... lol.
I only use that type of case when I'm at the gym. Otherwise, I have a front and rear bestskinever and that's it. Looks perfect except for some scratches on the chrome border.

I don't think I've ever seen or heard of anyone shattering their screens or backs using a simple bumper or slim case. Unless you want to be able to physically throw your phone around or treat it roughly, bumpers/slim cases are fine for 95% of use cases for normal people.
But sure, if you want the 100% piece of mind that your phone won't be broken, then by all means, bulk it up and deface the heck out of it.

For traveling, I may put on my Ringke Fusion case, but for the most part, I have my OEM Bumper on. If I had a Seidio Active case ordered up, I may pop that on when I go on vacation like Disneyworld.
But given your options you posted, I have seen cases like the Diablo for the GNex and they are indeedy very protective. Not too bad for the price either.
I have the case that OP is looking at...awesome case, I use it while mowing lawns and taking down trees. Not expensive either...

Nexus 6 - To Case or Not To Case

That is the question. Are you gonna put a case on your nexus 6? Spigen has multiple cases on their website(http://www.spigen.com/brands/google/nexus-6.html), they look pretty decent, however i might go with no case so i can always have direct contact with the premium materials. Im thinking about getting a squate trade warranty instead so i do have some protection if the screen breaks. Any opinions on squaretrade?
No way, the phone is big enough. Plus, whenever I get a case I end up taking it off in a day.

I use Bugatti hand made leather case whit all my phones. Top ****. But right now, there's no XXL case for N6 yet.
shopbugatti.com/en-us/catalog/mobile-accessories/universal-cases
(Add ww. can't post link, i m new on forum).
I pre-ordered spigen via Amazon, but I would prefer without because the phone is already very big.
The question is, how easy is to replace the back plate or back battery door?
I don't have any experience with Motorola phone, and from my experience with Nexus 5 from LG, that's not really easy, need to pry it open!
If the material is not expensive and easy to purchase, I won't use a case.
However, I am not sure with the frame around the phone, the one looks like a silver lining. Is that part of the back plate or front plate?
I think a leather pouch case would work the best for such a large device. You keep the device protected when transporting aswell as the benefit of using the device naked.

I totally agree with you. This is what I'm planning to do and that's how I used all my phones since the HTC Desire. It's like an awesome mix! Just need to remember to blow it out time to time for possible sand.
the heavier the device the more acceleration when in free fall before impacting a hard surface. I'm getting a case for sure, the spigen slim armor is a start
I don't know yet. Maybe something from Seidio
I like having a cheap easy on / off tpu case. It's nice to just throw it on quick if heading out to bar hop. That's the only time I worry about needing a case!
Anyone familiar with squaretrade warranty?

I actually took my Note -2 out of the case for a day... and dropped it. Shattered the screen. Got a replacement through insurance, and lost my unlocked bootloader. Been using an otterbox since. For this phone, Otterbox is just going to be too big. I'm looking for something that will protect it from falls, but that isn't so wide/thick! Any thoughts anyone?
A very, very thing profile case. I would hate to get scratches on the metal frame or the back. But I love naked phones so I might just stick with a bumper case.
I will probably use a glass screen protector though.
Otterbox doesn't make Nexus cases.

Anyone using the phone naked?

Hi Guys,
So i bought a Tech 21 evo frame for my edge but the phone feels so nice and looks so stunning without a case, is anyone rocking It naked?
(Meaning the phone itself lol)
I have tried, but there is nowhere to put the phone when your not using it, plus it can get pretty cold sometimes.
The lateral grip is so bad (slippery, narrow) that I think it's guaranteed you will drop the phone if used without any case.
I'm currently using it without case and will go on that way, I'll most likely just get a skin for the back to avoid scratches and get slightly better grip.

Using naked with a ScreenKnight protector on it. I have a Spigen Neo Hybrid for it but it makes it too bulky....
Kinda worried about dropping it though, especially after paying so much for it.
Going to be using an otter box symmetry once my zagg screen protector dries up.
Bought a cheap Best Buy store brand clear gel case for it, adds grip but keeps the look of the phone. No screen protector until a glass version.
Naked for me, I do what to get a screen protector for the front though. Just worried about scratches causing issue's when using the vr.
Seems a shame that a manufacturer spends so much time perfecting the design to look and feel this good when the majority of people just stick a case and screen protector on.
Obviously I know it's an expensive and great device to own and we don't wanna risk scratching or smashing it.
Just saying...
I like to live life on the "edge." No case or screen/back protector for me. Ran for 14 months with a naked Note 4 and only dropped it twice with minimal bezel damage. The trick is to have no friends and stay in your house/office all the time...

I do see one benefit of a case though...
True Story;
Woke up on day two with my new Galaxy S7 Edge and grabbed it off my nightstand in the dark bedroom to start my morning routine. I am embarrassed to admit that I sat there for the better part of 30 seconds trying to turn the screen on only to find that I was holding the phone upside down and it was illuminating my palm. The phone is curved nearly the same on the front and back and the glass on both sides really confuses the senses. I doubt I will do it again but I laughed so hard at myself.
It is a beautiful and well curved phone that shouldn't be hidden. For the same price as an Otterbox Defender you can get a year of SquareTrade Insurance and let them handle the worrying. Thankfully I don't see myself filing a claim for a toilet drop like with my Note 3 since this one's water proof; just as long as I fish it out before 30 minutes.
Yes, but I will purchase insurance.
