Syncing ebook reader? - Nook Touch General

What epub readers will sync between my phone and Nook? (I mean my place in a book, not the books themselves.)
I tried PageTurner - and, while it works, it's ugly as sin. Text looks awful, margins are bad.
Ideally I'd use Google Books, but it won't run on my Nook. I tried version 1.6 (I think) and it opens, shows covers, then crashes.
Thanks!

@d0g,
Kobo and Kindle are the primary apps that sync books between devices that work properly on the Nook.

I'm using AIReader (I as in i), which does a very good job syncing reading positions in books (all epubs) - if you're not too concerned that the data may travel over an unknown (probably the developer's own) server. The app still supports Android 2.1, has its own library function, Aard integration for custom dictionaries, and a ton of options. The developer is Russian and may sound a bit rough if you ask for support, but gets his job done.
Kindle synchronization works, but you have to find an old version Kindle app for the Nook - or the eInk-optimized one somewhere he in the forums.
I'm also using Aldiko Sync to synchronize my books across devices - very handy if you do a olot of text conversions to ebooks with Calibre, and don't want to do the same over and over again for the Nook, the phone, the tablet, and the laptop.

OMG, thank you! THIS is the app I've been looking for! Fantastic! Looks AMAZING on my NST. And so fast!
It actually displays text better than native Nook app (or at least as good, but with more control.)
Here's the link for anyone who wants to try it
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neverland.alreader

@d0g and @critialmass,
Thank you both so much! I gotta try this app.
One problem for me, though - I (by choice) don't have gApps installed on my NSTG. Therefore, I can't install apps from the Play Store.
Would one of you be so kind as to go into /data/app on your NST, find the app's file, and post it here for me?
Thanks again!

Yeah, if I knew how! Can't figure out Relaunch ... but I can send you the apk from my Moto X

OH, wait! Easy: just download from dev's website:

I've got instructions for that. First, install the latest version of ES File Explorer - it is the best file explorer on the market for the NST. Then check out my posts here and here for instructions on how to enable Root Explorer and Hidden Files.
And thanks for the .apk.

This is incorrect. It's l as in L. The website is alreader.com; you can click the link and Ctrl-F "alreader" to confirm the spelling.
(Apologies for responding to a thread that is very old, but this thread is the top DDG result for sync nook site:xda-developers.com. Just in case anybody else finds this thread the same way I did, I wanted to correct this mistake, which gave me some trouble when I searched for aireader instead of alreader.)

CM7/CM9 Nook APP - Reading Magazines

Hello all,
I know this has been discussed a lot but I can't seem to find a clear and final answer and I'm confused about one or two things. I have multiple magazine subscriptions that I can read just fine with the stock 1.4.1 NC software. I am currently running a CM9 nightly and would completely abandon the stock software on the emmc if I could get my magazines to work on the Nook Android App, but I cannot.
Has anyone found a fix for this? I have hear about Aldiko and I downloaded the app, but I am not sure how to proceed from there. Where are my magazines stored? Can Aldiko read them? I'm confused.
If anyone has any advice or a workaround I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
It is not hard to do the only challenge is that the magazine names are not given. Just use file manager to look in the B&N Downloads/Magazines on the nook hard drive (emmc/B&N Downloads/Magazines) click on the file and choose Aldiko to complete action.
As I said the problem is the magazine names are not there just file names which are numbers. I do not have a work around for that but at least I did not have to mess with DRM.
Thanks but I just checked in that folder and it was empty. Any idea why?

A bit off topic but not really...
I've been using the Zinio app for all of my magazines on all of my devices (android, apple, pc). I love it since it let's me read my mags on any device I may be using at the moment.
I looked into Zinio but the difference is that I get my Nook magazines free if I also have the print subscription, which Zinio does not offer. I would really love to read my nook magazines on CM...
Hey,
It depends on the magazine. Download the nook app, don't know if it works on CM9, and try to access the books from the nook app. Wired magazine did not work for me but Everyday Food did. YMMV.
I get Analog and Asimov's, and they work very well on my CM9 NC with the Nook app. These mags changed the format this month to something called "Article View™", but I haven't decided whether I like it or not. I've been using Aldiko for most reading, however, much more presentation control.
Download the Nook app from B&N while running CM7 or 9 and re-download the stuff you've purchased. What problems are you running into?
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
Go to the B&N site and look up each magazine. If it works on Nook for Android it will say so. If it only shows Nook Color & Nook Tablet you are out of luck.
Thank you everyone for your help. The magazines I have are tablet/color only so they won't work. I have EW and the New Yorker through Next Issue and I actually just got Wired magazine by finding the Kindle Fire Wired apk and installing it on my CM9 Nook, works pretty well (setup was a pain in the ass though).

How much of the B&N stuff can you delete?

I would like to pare down my Nook a bit.
I do like the native reader app and I borrow library books.
Yes, I could use the OverDrive reader, but the native reader is much better.
The first thing that went was Shop.apk
It was kind of annoying to search for stuff on my Nook and come up with 50,000 suggestions of books that I could buy.
Social.apk seems to go away painlessly too.
Deleting (or renaming) Home.apk breaks the "Last Read" icon on the desktop.
You can still get there by Library and hitting the top of most recent.
It gets you to the right page.
It probably would not be hard to write an app to do the last read function.
Moreover, you'd have a system icon to do with what you will.
(It sends an intent that is not handled. I'll have to make a receiver and see what it is.)
Okay, deleting Home.apk also breaks additions to Library.
But, you can still borrow books on Adobe Digital Editions and read them by clicking them in a file browser.
Oh, well, might as well delete Library.apk
Hmm, I guess that Library.apk is a search content provider.
Books no longer show up in global search.
I guess that I'll have to roll my own.
Re-enable Home.apk, disable Reader.apk and see what intent goes.
(Last page read is kept in /data/data/com.bn.nook.reader.activities/databases/lastreadingpoint.db
Select ean from lastreadingpoint order by lastupdated
I'm not trying to get around the DRM or anything. I just want to get rid of all the cruft.
I see what you're trying to do here
I've been playing with this some more.
Reader.apk keeps track itself of last page read.
If you just use a file manager to open your books you'll get the right page.
If you are a big library user and use Adobe Digital Editions,
then the info that ADE dumps on your Nook could be integrated nicely.
You could have your books listed and show the return date.
Hmm, do you think it could be possible to fully debrand the device and have it running a normal, common Eclair, but using the actual ROM as base? like, deleting the B&N apps and creating custom providers & intent receivers to avoid FCs and such?
Well, if you delete (or rename) Home.apk and Library.apk but still like to use Reader.apk (the native epub reader),
then you might need a convenient way to get to your last read book.
It's not rocket science and I haven't figured out the little book icon on the status bar yet,
but if you want to get back to your book here is a little app to go to last read.
Put the icon on your desktop and click the "L" to go to last read.
Did you replace library, or just completely delete it?

I've also wondered this, I use my nook for Kindle more than I do B&N lol. It would be great if we could get a ROM to flash that removes everything from the device and just makes it run stock Android then use Kindle and B&N apps, as well as whatever other apps for reading epubs to read our books. Don't know if this is possible but it would be nice, then we could fully repurpose all the buttons on the device purely for Android OS
And make a custom e-ink friendly version of the android homescreen, possibly including no-refresh?
Right now I've got the following apps deleted:
DemoMode.apk
Home.apk
Library.apk
Shop.apk
Social.apk
I will be working on a replacement library app.
I don't use the Kindle app. Do people who do also use the Nook native reader?
At the lowest level, all you need is a file manager.
I presume that each of the readers keep track of last page.
(Regarding the Nook lastreadingpoint:
Going straight to the database is the wrong approach, using the content provider is the right way.
LastRead.apk uses that.)
Ok, it's a neat hack to watch video on the Nook, but you really wouldn't want your Nook in A2 mode all the time.
As I've said before, the best uses of A2 is when an app knows when to use it, when dragging, scrolling, zooming.
If you have the source code to a browser/viewer/whatever, putting wrappers around the dragging/scrolling/zooming operation would be an improvement.
Personally, I have no problem with my ADW Launcher.
That it blurs and trails when parking an app on the desktop is no big deal.
I've got the little book icon on the status bar to open the last book in the native Nook reader.
That is, if you don't have Home.apk or (B&N) Library.apk
Here is a stop-gap release.
It works fine for the "Currently reading" but there is not yet other functionality in it.
I left it as a complete application so that you can easily see if you have it installed.
The actual "application" part of it is a blank screen.
No need to run it or put it on your desktop.
Just install it and click the little book on the status bar.

Hm, looks interesting, seems like you've managed to already wrap some events to dummy workers we can attach to in the future and mod this thing up . Awesome!
I'll be testing it somewhere between today and tomorrow. Right now I'm trying to replace the stock keyboard. LatinIME.apk is deleteable but there isn't any working keyboard for it yet (I've tried GO Keyboard, GB Keyboard for Froyo/Eclair and HTC IME with no avail) and it's one of the biggest annoyances I have with it since I need more of a PC-keyboard-lookalike rather than an ebook keyboard
Although I am not getting the point of your mission :-D try Hacker's keyboard. It is possible to google out android 2.1 version. It is the best I have found so far although it is quite dark.
Just thought I'd drop this link here for hacker's keyboard.

I've been working on two different approaches.
One is to use the Android native mediastore.
There are some bugs with this and it can get out of sync.
The other is to do all the searching for books myself.
That works ok as long as the books are found in the usual places:
/system/media/books
/data/media/B&N Downloads/Books
/media/My Files/Books
/media/Digital Editions
/sdcard/My Files/Books
Are there any other locations that I am missing?

I really don't know if it suits anyone's needs besides my own.
Because the stock Home.apk, Library.apk and Shop.apk are all tied together,
to have my app work correctly you have to rename or delete the three of them.
As far as I know it should allow books bought from B&N to still work correctly,
but I don't know because I don't own any. I only get library books or Gutenberg.
Is it important for people to be able to buy B&N books directly on their Nook?

Naturally, I speak for myself only.
You need credit card added to buy B&N free books still...
From another hand you can get same free books somewhere else, right?
Apokrifx is right, also, that app would suit me too. I need a credit card to buy B&N books, which I don't have -and- I'm not interested at all in using it as a reader. If I want to read something I'll download it and slam it through a PDF reader installed on it.
My main use for it is to take out ALL of the B&N stuff and use it as an android tablet, so, to me, it's really useful

[Q] What should a Newbie Nooker Do?

I was able to get a great deal on a Nook Glowlight. It's coming in the mail soon. I'm trying to get prepared.
I have an Android phone, and an HP Touchpad. I'm looking at using my e-reader as an e-reader and not as a tablet or phone substitute.
1. Should I root using Glownooter or should I root using minimal root?
I don't want to add Gapps to my Nook because I won't need anything other than a source for APKs. I'm okay with sideloading apks. (For purchased apps, I can backup the APK file on my rooted phone with Titanium and restore it on my Nook, right?)
2. I will be putting Amazon Kindle 3.2 and FBReader+FBSync on. Are there any other e-readers I should consider?
2. Aside from e-reader apps, what do most people put on their tablets?
I already plan on adding a web browser, file manager, Dropbox, and Titanium Backup. What else is recommended?
3. For complex PDFs, what app is recommended?

I imagine with a regular tablet people install their games and video players and the such, but since the screen isn't setup for a refresh rate decent for videos, and it has no sound, it's unlikely that any of those types of things would work nicely with the Glowworm.
One of the ereaders I've heard works well is called Cool Reader, but I personally use the built in reader and have never bothered with anything else.

ezPDF it works wonderfully for PDFs and supports Landscape/Portrait modes, along with special "zoomed reading" mode where it'll zoom in around the text blocks which I personally think makes it easier to read/navigate PDFs.

I recommend Mantano Reader for both epub and PDF formats. It works well on the NST, and handles both formats very well. I have completely replaced the NOOK Library with the Mantano home screen, and the NOOK Reader with Mantano's reader. I like viewing covers for both formats on one screen.

Other than reading, mine's mostly set up to allow quick checks of work stuff when I'm on the road. I put on email (maildroid, which handles MS Exchange well), calendar (Calendar Pad) and Astrid Tasks, plus a few other travel programs (TripIt, mainly). Evernote for synchronized notes with my various computers. Google Voice to read transcriptions of voice mail. I use Dropsync to pull down daily newspaper and magazine feeds I have my desktop generate daily using Calibre, then import them into Mantano. I use ES File Explorer (nice Dropbox and other cloud integration). Folder Organizer lets me set up quick access menus on the notification menu for often-used programs. Nook Touch Tools to remap QuickMenu to show Mantano, maildroid, calendar pad, astrid and dropsync.

Mantano is definitely worth a look. I like that it maintains page zooms between pages, so I don't have to fiddle with each page.
Thank you both.
I have a copy of ezPDF Pro from Amazon's FAOTD that I can try out on the Nook.
I'll try out CoolReader and Mantano, too. But the two biggest sellers of FBReader is the FBSync synchronization feature and the ability to remap FBReader page-turn keys with an XML file on the SDCard. Will those other two readers let me flip pages with the side buttons?

Mantano offers a cloud service, but it's not free. I've gone for the $20/year 5 GB, 2000 title option that lets me sync among 4 devices. In addition to reading positions, it also syncs categories, metadata and tags, which I find useful.
I've read good things about FBReader and will try their sync option someday. As I recall, it didn't handle some of my document formatting as well.

Some tips on battery life:
The NST can maintain very good battery life if you stick to your "primarily a reader" philosophy. In particular, avoid anything that polls in the background. While I do use maildroid, I have it set to only poll manually. I don't have any sort of background sync running (e.g. facebook, newsfeeds). No widgets.
I do have Tasker set up to wake the device once daily and force a sync with Dropsync to download my Calibre-generated news from Dropbox. I also have Tasker set to only enable wifi when a short list of specific apps runs (e.g. maildroid). Wifi is shut off when the screen goes off. I enable wifi manually for things like reader sync that I only do occasionally.
While I haven't done any scientific testing, my battery life seems as good as on a non-rooted device. I recently left my NST on my coffee table unplugged when I left town for a week, and on my return, it was still at 90%.
Being on older Android 2.1 Eclair, the NST will benefit from a task manager. I tried a few, including Advanced Task Manager, but I finally settled on System Tuner Pro. I get very few warning messages now (< 1 daily), and no memory problems. I have it set to only kill tasks when the screen goes off, and when actually low on memory using the "Light" preset. I have it ignore Mantano and Tasker.
With these settings, I haven't had any particular problems with the Google stuff loaded. If I don't use it, it doesn't affect battery life. I did freeze Gmail since I just don't like it.
tinynooter works on the glow, also. (and on the NST without the glowlight.)
If you're comfortable sideloading apk files via adb either glownooter or tinynooter will do the trick. Once you're shelled in over adb, you need to su to get an adb root shell - most of the time I'm ssh'ing into my device in any case
What tinynooter doesn't do is install any of the google apps, a modified framework or kernel - it's very much the base device but with root rights. For convenience the Amazon appstore is on board.
I'm curious what makes a nooter and what does not? I'd been thinking that nooter was a generic term for 'nook rooter?'
If you've got a glow nook, my advice to you as one newbie to another is to WAIT. There is almost no newbie support for the glow nook as I rather unfortunately discovered today. Even if you've rooted an android device before, the odds are slim that you've ever side-loaded an apk and there is not a guide to be found on this forum for the GlowLight. Not that it matters, because adb won't pick up a rooted glowlight. Additionally, do -not- try to install norefresh or multitouch.
I'm restoring my glow nook to factory tomorrow morning myself and just waiting it out. Besides, using it unrooted for awhile will help you figure out what you do and don't want out of a rooted device (for example you -are- going to need a separate pdf reader, but it might turn out that everything you read on your nook will already be .epub or easily converted to .epub).
For IRC, AndChat works excellent.

AndChat is good on my non-glow nook. I don't have any scrolling issues. I really really want a glow nook but I guess from what I read here, not everything is sorted out yet.

Rooted Nook: Problems using Dropbox / Pocket (Read it Later) / Evernote?

Hello everybody,
last year I bought a Kindle 4 (non-touch) and I liked the eInk reading experience so far. The main reason for me: I am travelling a lot for business and I prefer packing light.
But at the same time I am an avid Android user (Galaxy Nexus at the moment) and love taking a break checking my newsfeeds with Google Reader throughtout the day, while sending longer articles to the App "Pocket" (formerly Read It Later).
This was the main thing missing on my kindle...as it just didn't work natively. The detour sending the articles reformated with e.g. Istapaper to my kindle-whipsernet mailadress is just uncomfortable.
I was searching through the forum and kept watching YouTube Videos about the rooted Nooks and other ebook readers with Android on it, because I wanted to find out if it works flawless with apps such as:
Dropbox (keeps loads of work related pdfs in there)
Pocket (formerly Read It Later)
Evernote
What is your experience with it?
The nook so far seems to be the best solution for my requirements.
And I actually like the glow feature and that the buttons now work with custom Roms. Or did I get that wrong?
Thank you very much in advance!
I hope I am not asking too much. If I was just too stupid to find information please give me a hint Thanks!
Leo
My personal experience
Evernote works, sometimes it Force Closes, I think Dropbox works perfectly, and Pocket currently is not supported; maybe you should try an older version, when it was still Read It Later.
I'm pretty satisfied with my Nook, I don't know if the new Kindle Paperwhite is based on Android, but if it is I'll consider getting one.
I can confirm that Read It Later (previous version of Pocket) works perfectly.
I got the apk out of one of the other threads, but I should be able to dig up what version it was later.
For Dropbox I'm using app called Dropsync which support two way synchronization - so far I'didn't have any problems with it. Works fast and easy.
Instead of Pocket u can use Instafetch (supports Instapaper.com).

Great to hear that it works flawless Thanks!

Now I am trying to get a Nook in Germany :victory:
Yesterday I finally received my Nook Simple Touch Glowlight and love it so far.
The feature of sideloading custom android Launcher and being able to use apps is just phenomenal.
I rooted using NookManager and installed the gapps package. That so far works flawless!
But, however, I am still missing Pocket / Read it Later
Does anyone still have a working apk?
There are around 1000 articles saved in my pocket and I can't just switch to Instapaper.
Furthermore...does anyone have a apk of the stock Google Reader?
Thanks

Odp: Rooted Nook: Problems using Dropbox / Pocket (Read it Later) / Evernote?
You may want to check using your own RSS feed from pocket. Just add it to e.g. RssDemon, which works great on nook.

Oh thanks!
I didn't know that there is an RSS feed!
But I can't imagine that there is a synchronisation?
Because RSS doesn't allow any feedback from the client if I am not mistaken.
(I am not home right now...so I can't test it )

I works just as standard RSS, if there is something new to download detected, it is downloaded. But only once app perform time based checks (every hour for example). So it is not a push service, like in mails ( right the time one comes it is downloaded, i presume)
Ah...hmm...yeah then I could just read them directly in my RSS reader I guess
The temporary storage of articles that I want to read later is what comes in handy
Well the Read it Later APK from above still works, even though the scrolling is a bit odd on the nook. I have to perform quite long strokes on the screen to get it to move forward.
Anyways...better than nothing :good:
Too bad that Google will discontinue the service for Google Reader...it was such a convenient webapp
Evernote has stopped working for me - the screen always just blinks for a second when I'm trying to open the app. I tried deleting the cache, deleting the dalvik cache, reinstalling the app and rebooting - nothing helped. I wonder, if this is related to the latest update 5.0.2? Has anybody elso got similar isues? Thanks!

I had the same issue, i didn't find any solution for the newest version, had to install Evernote 4.5.6.2 which works fine.
Available from Android Drawer Repositary.

Google Books: no basket/cart so can't buy books.

Using gbooks_10_16.apk I can search and get a book list, but nothing happens when I click a book. The basket/cart and pay apparatus is missing. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
I've also tried gb152.apk, but this doesn't seem to work at all.
I rooted with Nook Manager and then ran NTGAppsAttack (both v.050). NTGAppsAttack went fine until I clicked on Market only to find there were no apps at all anywhere. I left the Nook near my wifi, with wireless on, for hours and finally What's App appeared. I'd have preferred something simpler, but installed it anyway and then, having doubts, uninstalled via the Apps Drawer. I then upgraded the Market and installed SearchMarket, which just brings up the search keyboard. However, it finds apps, thpough only free ones, and downloads them. The Market still shows only What's App, though something else appeared briefly. There was no Books app in the Apps Drawer, so I downloaded the above versions.

So just to be sure, you are using the NST?
You will see very few/no apps via the Market app. Sometimes the category list will dredge up an app or two (free), but you need SearchMarket to find anything. I think you are right about only free apps. It may be that the old apps cannot negotiate the security transactions for paid apps.
And on that topic, the non-function of the store in Gbooks is your least problem. Have you noticed that it doesn't upsync?! I and others have done a pretty thorough investigation of the various versions that will run on the NST.. The version you mention has a functioning reader but can't upsync. I think up to 1.3.5 the reader still works (going from memory here...) but no upsync. The oldest version that will currently sync is maybe 1.5.2, but only if you can get the book to actually display, which is more miss than hit.
I played with Gbooks for a long time, even though I've never used it. I don't think it's doable without a serious rewrite of the source.
If you haven't already, you'll need to update the certificates on your nook as described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=65344931
Some older versions of Google Books will work, but maybe not all of the features. I have Books version 1.2.2 and can download purchased books from my library, although I purchased them on other devices. You can't purchase books on the old version of the Market or the books app since our nooks don't have Google Play Services, but you should be able to download books purchased on other devices (but same account.
You won't find many compatible apps in the Market at this point, and purchased apps have to be downloaded to other devices and then side loaded to the nook (assuming they're compatible). Some older working versions of apps can be found here on XDA.

Does your version upsync? If so can you post a copy of the apk?

Yes, I'm using the NST. I haven't looked at syncing because as I understand it this is just a question of convenience when reading on multiple devices, which is not my aim. I just want to get books onto the Nook. Many thanks.

Many thanks. This is very interesting, but I'll have to wrap a wet towel round my head before going back to the thread you suggest! Too late at night now.

It seems to upsync last read pages, roughly anyway since the formatting varies for different devices. Since this old version doesn't support anything like notes or highlights, I'm not sure what else it could sync.
What's the best/most practical way to share files on xda? While I've been lurking for quite some time, I only created an account fairly recently.

You can attach the apk file using the options below as you compose your reply or if you're not able to do that yet you can provide a link to any safe place where you can store a copy (Dropbox, etc.) so that people can access the file.
This is sort of amazing. I've never run into a version number like that and am really curious to see what it can do. Casual reading and syncing are all I would care about.

I've solved my problem now. I've been trying to download books from Google, first to my NookST and then to my laptop. But I'm running 32-bit Linux on my laptop and Google, like Adobe, seems determined to exclude Linux from the world of ebooks. So I downloaded to my Android phone and was quite surprised when the book also appeared on my Nook. I was offered the option of syncing, but decided not to be too ambitious in case it caused problems with the rather old Nook software.
It may have helped that I did all the NTGAppsAttack process on my Nook (I didn't want to go to the laptop because of the Linux problem). After I typed in my phone number I first tried to confirm on the phone and, when that didn't work, typed in the confirm number on my Nook. So perhaps the 2 devices finally got quite firmly linked.
I'll have a go at attaching the Google Books version I'm using, gbooks_10_16.apk.
I got it from another post on this forum. The reader works well but doesn't have a search facility.

Here's the md5 for the attached file generated by Android File Verifier:

I think I probably got this apk when it was posted a long time ago, but I can't remember for sure. I just let Lookout scan it again and it came up "safe", for whatever that's worth.

Well done!! People have been searching for a version of GBooks that would sync for years! I can confirm that this works with free books from Google as well as user-uploaded books. I don't have any books purchased from Google so could not check that.
As with other versions, it helps to have a hardware key assigned to "menu" in order to access things like font size, etc., while reading (I use a long-press of the lower right button).
This is really a great discovery. I'll have to update the various other threads with a pointer to your post.

Glad it's working for you too! I can't remember for sure, but I think this version might've been recommended by someone else before. I'll have to look through my old bookmarks...

Thanks for all the info, guys. Second time you've steered me in the right direction, nmyshkin. NB Attaching the apk file was difficult because the process was incredibly slow (and not even a whirligig). Lots of notices about scripts that had stalled. I'm running Linux Mint 17 (Cinnamon) 32-bit; browser is Firefox.
