[Q] Roms port - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why isn't it possible to port a rom from galaxy s5 to the nexus 4 or the g3 rom or things like that? All the roms are awesome but they are still the same look and everything only with extra options and features.. i'll be love to try something different if it is possible and if there is such ported rom of touchwiz or something like that can someone please share it with me?

It is possible, it'd just take a long time and no dev who knows how to do so has done those specific roms.

The hardware in the phones are different which means different drivers, bootloaders, system images, recoveries, etc.

So it is possible but it just hard?

It is hard to port Samsung's Touchwiz to other phones because Touchwiz requires a Samsung kernel and a bug-free kernel may not be possible. Same goes for the lg ROM.

So we can use the ported launcher from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2773621

Sometimes, you can get your ROM to visually resemble Touchwiz by using custom launcher such as Nov and applying Nova-compatible themes. Theming is good but not always a perfect replica of the original interface.

So there's no hope?

I doubt it. The developer would also need source code, preferably the original phone, and nexus 4.

Just install CyanogenMod 11 on your device and apply this theme:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thomassafca.theme.touchwiz&hl=en
And this launcher:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.epic.launcher.tw&hl=en
Also you can look for some touchwiz or LG apps here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2335530
And there is themes for LG phones for CyanogenMod too.
Greetings.

Which Roms feature the Samsung Camera App?

I don't want to lose access to the Samsung Stock Camera app. The HDR feature is incredibly good. Which roms actually include it, or is it easy enough to put back in if a rom doesn't.
Thanks

Any touchwiz based ROM will have it. I don't know if it can be implemented on any AOSP ROM's since some TW apps only work on TW framework.

I'm confused which roms are touchwiz based, does JFLTE mean that?

No, JFLTE is just a device/variant name of the S4. Touchwiz is the software running on the device. Usually just look at the rom title and it will include "TW" or "Android 4.xw/TW". Also if you read the features of the rom it will usally say based on Samsung Touchwiz or whatnot.
The other software versions are: AOSP, CM, GE/Google Edition. (Which would mean they are not Touchwiz roms)

[Q] What custom ROM to keep Samsung features?

I'd like to know if there are any ROMs that keep most Samsung features like S-Pen functionalities and multiwindow?
Looks like X-Note does that. Not sure. Omega? CM?

Omega http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470441
Ask in the question section next time.
Literally anything that's based on stock firmware (Touchwiz).

Samsung features and its bloatware, can only be found at Touchwiz based ROM, as this ROM is from Samsung itself.
CM & AOSP or AOKP is not TW-ROM, therefore, if you need those samsung features & bloatwares, you will not see them on these 3 types of ROM by default.
Just go into development forum of Note 3 of your device, and find any rom which TW base, you should be fine.
cheers.

new rom, new style

You won't get a complete ROM ported from lg or xperia devices, but you would get themes or flashable mods if u search a lot.. If you are really interested in experimenting.. I saw Ubuntu (alpha) you could try that out, google for link! ✌
thanks, but i dont know how to make my own rom and this unbunto thing hehehe....ill check if there is some mods....THANKS

There is also a Sense 5 Port:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2402208
The only rom that would be very nice to have is a full S5 Rom Port like for the Note 3.
AOKP maybe?
try themes (look in my signature)
the sense 5 port is not complete, its full of bugs and many things doesnt work, aokp is not bad although because i have i9500 it still have some bugs, like camera, call quality....i guess i have to wait to see if the sense 5 port gets better...THANKS

ycd rom is the better
ycd rom is for i9505 not i9500, and i have ozcan rom which have s5 ui and apps and its a very good rom, but tw remains tw...
i wanted to ask something, the developers did port the miui for i9500, and coloros which is oppo ui to our i9500, why couldnt they port lg, sony, htc ui?? i know that every ui is different than the other and it maybe hard, but it should still be possible, right??

Looking for a rom that still has S-Pen functionality but on stock Android?

Hey,
been a while since I been here(from back in the days of my Galaxy Nexus). I just picked up a Note 4. I like it. I somewhat dislike the TouchWiz and hate how out of box it's using 1.8-2GB of ram on start up(assuming because of TouchWiz).
Is there any roms out there that run practically stock Android(pref. 5.0 Lollipop?) but still have the S-Pen suite enabled, including the part when I pull my S-Pen out it notices it and gives me that "Air command" menu.
One last plus would be something that gives me the ability to still use fast charge 2.0.
I looked up a couple of roms but unless I missed something they don't offer these features.
Any help? I have the Canadian N910W8 model and use it on Band 4 AWS/UMTS(3G) and LTE on various freq's so the radio would(should, preferably stay in-tacked)
Thanks!
I don't think this belongs in this section man, maybe ask it in the Q and A. It will probably get moved.
On answering your question, at this stage there is no stock aosp rom that supports spen functions. It's a little bit of a dream for most users. Although I hear that lollipop will be faster than stock, that's what I've read.

That's wrong. There is S-Pen functionality in cm12 at this moment. All you have to do is download and install one or two apps from Play Store. This apps are even free.
It is CM S-Pen en Note Buddy. I have installed them myself and S-Pen does work.
Found this the other day https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.steadfastinnovation.android.spenlauncher&hl=en
Im running cm12 with the following
s pen launcher
cm s pen add on
note buddy
papyrus
this gives me basic s pen functions but is more than adequate for my needs

You are not entirely right either. There are free versions of this apps, but for full functionality you have to pay, not that there is anything wrong with it, just stating the fact. Also you have some s-pen functionality, but not all of it, and in my opinion CM12 s-pen functionality is somewhat less fluent and intuitive then TW one. Regardless, I still prefer CM than TW
I would also like to know how is this thread relevant to Development section

Be careful throwing around the word 'wrong'. I did say as far as I know, just trying to help someone out. There is apps you can use with cm or some other aosp roms, but it's nothing like the spen features you get from within TW. Not that I'm a big fan of it myself, I have quite a few gripes myself, *cough* performance... But for the multi window and spen features, presently if you use them all, TW is it for now.

I have the same phone as you. So far LiquidSmooth and the Unofficial CM-12.0 are the only Lollipop builds that can even use the S-Pen (Unless you know of others). You won't get the TW features of course. I'm very slowly looking into building a AOSP Lollipop rom that is custom built for our N910W8 devices. I've never built my own before so it is a lot of learning.

It *should* be doing that. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. It's caching stuff for speed so that the next time it needs to load up something, it can check if it still is in RAM already. It's not a TouchWiz thing.

You can still install it on other versions of the Note 4. Just expect some things not to work. If your running the CAN version of the Note 4 I don't recommend using LS atm due to very poor battery life on this model.

Not a problem!
Has anyone tried converting all the original s-pen apps to user apps with titanium backup, and then doing an app and data backup of them from the stock ROM, installing CM12, and then try to install them?
I'd try it myself, but I'm asking on behalf of a mate, not for myself. I think there's a possibility that it might work. It's gotta be worth a try..
I've got CM12 on my S4, and it's awesome.

imo the best rom and all features would work like in stock.

Base roms

So I searched the whole rom recoveries kernel section, did not see any base roms. If there isn't, where to info about pulling system to make one? Trying to get a custom OOS rom going as AOSP can suck it lol. Original software is always more stable IMO

What is a base ROM for you?
Normally pure AOSP is considered as the reference as it's Google code without modification. But people don't like pure AOSP because it's lacking many features people are used to. So even AOSP labeled ROM have some non AOSP add-ons.
If you want a 'pure' AOSP ROM you'll have to compile it.

Back in the days someone usually created an optimized stock Rom for different devices based off the OEMs software so that others could flash it or use it as a base for custom ROMs based off of stock.
I believe that's what he is referencing if I am not mistaken.

There is no base ROM for the OnePlus 6T. Its so AOSP like almost everything is done from source. I thought about posting a base ROM, as that is what I used to primarily use (and usually posted). I wasnt much into Source.
Another cool thing some devs due are make mods that can be flashed in magisk, and so long as you have the stock oos you can enjoy there version of stock oos with whatever tweaks they have done to it such as custom settings apps, etc.

Nailed Scott as usual. This device and how android handles files is extremely different than other phones we've both worked on as well (pretty sure that's android specific) I'm gonna have to look into the magisk thing. Never did the from source thing so that might be over my head. Don't have Linux set up on my machine either so a lot of time would have to go into just getting a stock flashable to work with.
I want to get some of the mods and themes I always post for this phone, but this might be a hurtle as I usually got a base to run with. I always try to show some love and since developers are jumping ship (because the money's not there, let's not lie and say that isn't what it's about) I know my work would be appreciated
