My S4 (GT-19505) cannot read SD cards (SD card blank)

Hi XDA Family.
I recently flashed Omega Rom on my Galaxy S4 and everything went well. The next day I played my music from my SD card then there was an error "cant play this music file or something like this" after that my S4 was displaying that my SD card is blank or has unsupported files. The phone recommended that I need to format it using the phone. I formatted it like my phone said but it did nothing. Phone still displaying that SD card is blank or has unsupported files.
The next day bought a new SD card (8gb Scandisk) and the phone read it no problem. I transferred all my music to my new SD card and after playing my music the error appeared again and now both SD cards are showing that the SD cards are blank or has unsupported files.
Re flashed stock rom and stock kernel but still has the same errors on my SD card
Borrowed a memory card reader from a friend and formatted the SD card using my PC formatted it with all know file system. FAT32, exfat and NTFS but everything is not working.
Lastly I tried my SD cards with another Galaxy s4 and they worked without problems, formatted it using the phones formatting capability inserted it on my S4 but still has the same errors.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated guys.
Thanks in advance.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
I have The same problem.
Pls help

Hi! Thanks for replying, I was beginning to lose hope that anybody would reply. Tried your suggestion. Downloaded 3 scanning SD card apps on Playstore but none of them worked. Both of my SD card still shows up as blank in my S4.
This only happened after i flashed a ROM, anything I still need to do to go back to stock? Already flashed an official softwas and kernel.

Hi Good Morning!
Tried that last night still the same problem. Tried the chkdsk on CMD still the same problem. I can buy another SD card but I am just afraid that maybe a week or two the sd card will mulfunction again and I cant forget the fact that my PC and other S4 can read my SD cards.
Two possible reasons. Sandisk SD cards supposedly fail easily but yours is 8gb so it should be ok.
Next reason is Omega Rom bug, I personally don't have this issue but I have a similar one. My Sdcard does not mount as r/w automatically.

Thanks for the reply lamstone, I have read somewhere that disabling the automount helps. Can you help me on how to disable automount? and can I do it if I am on stock firmware?
Thanks
Just use the card reader and adapter and attach it to your computer and format the card using exFAT file system. Then use it in phone. AFAIK the current custom recoveries already support exFAT. So you should be fine for anything. I had similar issue with my 32GB Sandisk Ultra card when I formated it using phone. No issues since I formated it as exFAT on PC.

Hi thanks for the reply.
Tried Fat32, Exfat and ntfs and all of the still has the same error. Actually bought a new 16gb sd card earlier I popped it in my s4 and still has the same problem.
This started happening when I flashed Omega rom. Is there anyhow I can check if I have a stock everything? My kernel, recovery and firmware?
thanks for the patience.
BUMP!!!
Anybody who can help me??
Another update is that I installed CWM recovery Philz Edition and tried hooking it up on the UBS cable and mount usb storage. My computer can now see my sd card inserted on my phone. Tried reformat while my phone is on CWM and connected thru USB cable and formatting goes thru but phone still says SD Card is blank or has unsupported files.
One thing that is strange though is that when I try to copy things to my SD card while my phone is attached to the USB cable my PC freezes like it cant copy any files to my SD card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I bought an 16GB class 10 Kingston SD Card and inserted in my phone . Nothing. THen I disabled Developer options and it appeared. Then I though I will reformat it using directly the phone. Ok. Tried to use it bam "unexpectedly removed " and nothing. Then I tried another SD Card and the same happend first good then removed and so the third one.
Any updates on this thread ? Did you manage to make it work ?
This phone is pissing me off. I am having same problems with stock music player and Goohle Play Music app giving errors on any tracks in my Sandisc 32 gb class 6 micro SD. I have started to wonder if it is related to me using the Samsung Smart dock with a 500 gb external HDD to watch movies on HDTV. It mounts the drive and works great but following day I was try to play music that worked day before and now I get unsupported file type error and other error.
I tried avg to check for a virus(which is unlikely imo) and it shows no virus. I just tried this SD on another android device (Nabi 2 tablet running 4.0.4 and all songs play PERFECT without error. This must be my At&t galaxy S4. Any ideas anyone? I really dont feel like reformatting the sd since it seems to work fine on tablet. Also: I already wiped both music player apps in settings and eventually uninstalled and reinstalled the apps (and another musiv player also) to see if it was cache related. This made no difference.
Edit* oops. After rereading OP... I think I posted this in wrong thread.lol. But my issue with S4 and SD card error with music playback is similar so Ill leave my post unless mod wants to remove it. FYI I fixed my issue(somewhat). Ths SD card is fine as I suspected. The phone has an issue having stock music app, play music and mx player. Either one of the apps was running in background or the system was running sound in background. Hope to not have problem repeat itself. I bet custom rom would fix this if AT&T hadnt locked phone with sneaky update.
You can try flash Rom Cook MH8.
I think your problem will resolve.
Thanks
i think you need to try this.. Get your SD card and try to put in another phone example Blackberry (im not sure if it will work on HTC, alcatel etc. except samsung).
then format using other phone. after formatting ffrom other phone. reinsert the sd card on your samsung unit. then check the storage and try reformatting again using your Samsung.
still nothing
Well. I still do not know how to fix this and I searched and tried almost everything. Only thing that I think might be wrong that somehow the "auto mount SD " does not work.
Because the card is there. The phone cannot see it . Other phones do fine. And in CWM even I can see that there is indeed an SD card but cannot acces the files.
So... I really do not know
i am also having this problem but nothing seems to help have tried alot of thing but yeah :/ sp i have given up on it ! it is a 32 gb sd card loved it.. now i almost got anxiety cus i have so little storage xD hehe well well might buy a new sd soon
My class 4 32gb sdcard too stoped working properly these days.Sometimes it gets unmounted randomly or it doesn't get detected or it shows blank sdcard.I don't know what cause that but the best I could have done is to backup my data and buy a sammy 32gb class10 micro sd.I heard that S4 has problems with sandisk ones.

UPDATE:
My SD Card problems has not been fixed until now!
I just flashed the leaked 4.3 firmware and I tried to insert an SD Card just to try it and BAM! it worked!!! I am now afraid of rooting my phone because maybe the SD Card will not be working again but as long as my SD Card is working I am good!
Anybody who has problems with their SD Card should try to flash this:

Micro SD Card Unexpected Removal causes TouchWiz Home to have problems

Hi XDA,
I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE I9505. Sometimes, after I formatted my micro SD card to exFAT, about 2 to 3 days later the dreaded "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" error shows up in the status bar. It's kinda annoying to see that message as sometimes the phone will not remount the micro SD card at all. That's when I have to re-plug-in my micro SD card back into the SD card slot in my Mac using the micro SD card adapter that came with it. Then I have to go through the formatting process again.
Before that, I backup all my files that are stored on my micro SD card to my external hard drive via my Mac. Following which I format the card. The same problem surfaces again after 2 to 3 days, like I said in the first paragraph. Is there a permanent solution for me to solve this issue? I am planning to replace my micro SD card with a Samsung SDXC 32GB class 10.
Also, I would like to add in that, when the micro SD card is unexpectedly removed, sometimes that issue causes a "software glitch" with TouchWiz Home. After about 2 seconds the TouchWiz Home launcher refreshes itself (NO REBOOTING INVOLVED) and this happens until I power off the device. When I boot the phone again the problem is solved. However, 40% of the time the "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed" pops up and if I'm lucky, the phone will automatically detect and remount the micro SD card within 10–30 seconds. Other times, I have no choice but to take the card out from my phone and re-format it.
I need my micro SD card to be in exFAT as some files I have stored in the card are larger than 4GB. Can an XDA expert help me with this issue?
(I do not want to perform a factory reset as that wastes a lot of time. I've tried that and the issue keeps on coming back.)
MANY THANKS! WILL CLICK ON THE "THANKS" BUTTON IF SOME XDA MEMBER IS ABLE TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE! :good::good::good:
UPDATE: There are compatibility issues (I had) with the SanDisk Ultra 16GB Class 10 SDHC card.
There seems to be an issue with Samsung's latest phones (i.e. Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4) using SanDisk's micro SD cards. Every 4 hours or so, my Galaxy S4 would show an error in the notification bar, saying "SD Card Unexpectedly Removed", and then "Preparing SD Card" (or sometimes "Preparing SD Card" does not even show up!) I always had to plug the card in to the SD card slot of my Macbook Air using SanDisk's micro SD card adapter and re-format the card. I've tested both FAT32 and exFAT and both posed problems. I gave up on the micro SD card and decided to buy a new Samsung Plus 32GB SDHC UHS-1 class 10 card. No issues for now (I tested FAT32 so far for my new Samsung micro SD card, will test out exFAT). Will report if there's a problem again tomorrow.
My advice: for those who are having problems with their SanDisk micro SD cards, please switch to Samsung's very own Plus or Pro series of micro SDs.

I had this on my original s4 (i337) when using Touchwiz. I installed GPE on it and the problems went away. If I were a betting man, I'd point more towards TW than the SD card itself. I sold my i337 and am now on the i9505G and using thee exact same SD card with zero issues.

I had this same problem before, but after I rooted my phone and installed custom rom this problem is gone. I have the Sandisk 32gb and s4 I9505.
I have the same problem. I have an i9505 with Android 4.3 (which updated yesterday to I9505XXUEMK8 baseband). I've had the problem from new when it was on 4.2.x but thought it was the card (cheapo from HK). Now using a 64gb Samsung with same problems. Did it 3 times today and it's getting tiresome now.
It's still under warranty so I ponder whether to do this root thing and update to KitKat/or other PGe or wait for official KitKat or a fix. Or speak to Samsung for an idea.
The phone isn't locked to a network.
Anyone offer some advice?
Thanks
Mike

SanDisk 32GB Ultra card here.... I made a similar thread recently.. My issues where similar yet somewhat different... However I fixed it all by uninstalling DropBox updates and disabling the bloatware version with Root App Delete.... Sounds completley unrelated, I know, but seriously try it out, it worked for me, and others in another forum too...
Same problem with my San disk ultra 32gb, constant unexpected removed sd card error so my apps r useless most the time as I have most on there,
I've got a lot more issues with my s4 as I posted today I was thinking about ringing samsung up

I know this thread is old but when I had the S4, my 64gb card would give me fits.
I used the sd card formatter from sdcard.org to do a full overwrite format. Then used the S4 to format the card after installation and voila. .... no more issues.
I got the idea from using that tool for the sd cards i use in my Raspberry Pi.
Hope that helps.

128GB MicroSD card - Disappearing files/folders

Hi all,
I have a Galaxy S5 (SM-G900W8) Canadian model. I purchased a 128GB sd card and I'm running into some issues. My S5 can detect the card, and I can copy files to it. But it seems that one I hit roughly 8.08GB of used storage, anything more I add disappears after my phone reboots.
The card was formatted in FAT32 originally. I have tried exFAT but the phone is unable to read the card in this file format. I have also tried NTFS but same results as exFAT.
I have done some research and have seen others with issues regarding 64 and 128GB sd cards with Samsung Galaxy models, but no fix yet (or at least from what I've seen/read).
This card only seems to work in FAT32, but I am unable to use the full capacity of the 128GB sd card in FAT32.
I have a 32GB sd card that works just fine without issues. Not sure what file table the 32GB card is formatted in though as I did not know of this issue until recently when I discovered it so never bothered to check.
Is there a fix for this that I have not found yet? This is quite annoying.
Thanks
Probably a fake.
i dont have problem with Team MicroSD 64GB
you have to format it in your phone (ExFAT), use file explorer in your phone, do not format using PC

What sd card is this because it seems like it's a fake and may not really have all that storage. I've never had any problems with my 64 gb SanDisk micro sd card which I'm currently using.
