[Q] Downloaded cyanogenmod now I can't go back - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I have a problem with my Canadian Samsung galaxy s5
I installed cm11 onto it (unofficial) and the battery life was extremely poor
I tried reverting back to default firmware and I looked at guides
All I did was install the default firmware from a website file was around 1.5 gb
Then I installed it through odin
Everything worked great except that the WiFi would not turn on
The slider would move but just stay grey
Second some apps kept popping up and saying this app has stopped working
I got cm11 back on my device but can you guys help me figure out what is wrong
With the WiFi once I revert back
Thanks a lot

CSC = Consumer Software Customization
You can obtain info about the CSC with Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app.
To download stock firmware for your device: Open Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app > Menu > 'Firmware Browser'.

My csc # just says rwc not sure what that means and I'll download the firmware asap

RWC is Rogers (Canada), I think (?).
Just open Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app > Menu > 'Firmware Browser' and select the firmware to download.

So I downloaded and flashed the correct version however it still having the same problem with the WiFi I went back to cm11 because I need my phone for my work any other suggestions?

From recovery are you doing a "format system" first? And then a wipe data & cache? And a wipe davlik cache? This will ensure absolutely that nothing is left over from the previous OS interfering with things.
So basically you want to completely wipe your phone first then install your new OS.

I'll attempt that after work and I have a question is it required to install gappa with this rom?

The stock ROM? Absolutely not. If it is actually a stock Samsung ROM it will come with more google rubbish than you'll ever want or need.
If you're asking about Cyanogenmod. Then absolutely yes. They are no longer allowed to include GAPPS in their roms so it needs to be installed separately.

I'd say neither. I'm certainly no genius. Just a user that has been frustrated by similar issues in the past with a tad more experience. And if you're not told/taught/stumbled across these things you aren't to know so I certainly wouldn't call you an idiot .
Glad it helped though =). I'm now in the habit of formatting /system/ when flashing a new rom that isn't merely an update for the one I'm currently on.

[Q] Major problems with Google 4.3 ROM! Please Help!

Hi,
I flashed the Google 4.3 S4 Rom and used TWRP 2.5.0.2 and Goo with instructions I found on the boards.
- I am a Canadian (Rogers/FIDO) S4
- I used the 4.3 ROM Deodexed
So now the problems:
1) I originally installed it and it was constantly stuck on 'Samsung Galaxy S4' Screen, couldn't proceed barely got into recovery and reflashed; this worked and it booted google and i realized why this happened is because i accidentally erased my data.
2) The second time, I simply turned off my phone and turned it back on, again i was stuck on 'Samsung Galaxy S4' Screen, no way of doing anyhing except turnging off the phone and trying again and again to get to recovery, I then flashed to 4.3 again off the external.
3) I simply tried to open facebook and the phone booted and went on to the 'Samsung Galaxy S4' Screen and is stuck again! Even when I reboot through Team Win Recovery v2.5.0.2 to System I get the same boot loop.
I am super frustrated with this, what can I do and at this point I'm getting to the point where I would like some help to go back to stock. I would also like some input as to why this is happening if anyone has any suggestions or help it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You.

Which google rom 4.2.2? there are a few, meaning where did you get the rom?
Which kernel did you use?
you say you have this...both roms require a certain kernel. Depending on whose rom you flashed.

Ok, now we're cooking, thanks for the info...
I haven't tried that rom yet, I am going to d/l it and give it a shot. Be back shortly.
ODIN back to stock, and start over from there, and take care to flash/erase properly. backup user apps/data if you can (there are non-root options) and restore when you finish flashing 4.3 and are sure its stable.
Ok..back...I flashed this rom I booted with the kernel supplied in rom. Hmm..it is kernel related for sure. Have you posted the issue in that roms thread? May want to give that a shot.
I'm on canadian S4 aswell and I also flashed the 1.3 Google edition but flashed faux kernel. Works like a charm.

Proper wiping steps is key when changing ROM bases. Do a factory reset, wipe both caches, format /system, and if coming from TW, format the internal also.
Here is a post by TeamWin on wiping for Roms. Formatting Data is not part of "normal" wipe process. It wipes your internal sd.
http://teamw.in/whattowipe
These guys are far above me. But my preferred method is to "Wipe" System/Data/Both Caches. I actually do it twice. I know many say no need, but I do. I did this for many years on previous phones and never had issues. If on Nightlies or incremental updates did not wipe unless OP said to.

The internal wiping isn't necessary, but it does get rid of TW folders that you don't need if switching to AOSP.
I think you could delete them individually as opposed to formatting entire internal with other rom backups/kernels/gapps etc. I also have music/pics on internal too. Also, I like some will go back and forth btwn aosp and tw. So, I would want to keep them. I never did that, but read about some having issues after Formatting Data
All IMHO--

i9505 XXUAMDM, want to go to 4.3 - can you help?

Hi all,
I'm currently on Android 4.2.2 (rooted, UK version, SIM unlocked) and would like update to 4.3.
My Baseband version is I9505XXUAMDM.
Does anyone know which rom file I should use? I'd like to retain root permissions if possible and to use an original (or close as possible) Samsung rom.
Many thanks

Yes I was on the I9505XXUAMDM version (see attached image) and just followed the instructions EXCEPT I didn't use ClockworkMod, I'm using 'TWRP Recovery'. I downloaded the 'GALAXY S4 Google Play Edition 4.3 v1.3 CoOoL_BoY.zip' file, placed it on my memory card, booted in to TWRP, wiped the parts as instructed, then ran the installer. All worked nicely!
I backed it all up first (mostly using titanium backup pro), then restored the programs/program data from it after, so I was up and running pretty quickly after.

Thanks, I shall give that a go then
Philz recovery is basically CWM, so as far as I'm aware you can also run the zip from within philz, However can anyone confirm this?
Sorry to hijack the thread by the way!

Also when you backed up with titanium pro did you choose to do the batch operation and backup system settings and apps or just the apps?
Thanks

I backed up the apps and their settings (but ignored the system apps). Good luck
So I installed the rom and it is more stable but is still crashing alot!
In Philz recovery when you wipe/factory reset there are two options:
Wipe/factory reset
Clean for a new rom
In guessing I should have chose the clean for a new rom option? I mean the phone still has some of my old data on it so I'm sure something went wrong.
I'm debating just flashing to stock rom and giving up! cab anyone suggest anything?
Cheers

Yeah you should have chosen the 'Clean for new rom' option. It's likely crashing as it still has settings/files left behind that aren't compatible with your new rom. Mine has been very stable since the upgrade, so it's worth trying again with a proper wipe

So it turns out the battery is ruined on the phone, I thought it was the rom initally and I will give it a fresh install when I can.
In the press samsung have stated that some S4 batteries are faulty, Mine has swollen up and the phone no longer lies flat!
Also it only holds charge for about 20 mins!
Anyhow, I have spoken to the local service centre and I can get a free replacement, good news, however will I have to flash my phone back to stock firmware? Or is my warranty still good?
I can borrow a friends battery and flash back to stock fw but will I need to do this or can I just go ahead and flash back on my rom of choice?
I'v never overclocked the phone or played with any battery voltage settings etc, so I think it must be a genuine faulty batch.
Any suggestions?

Nope you can leave the phone software as is, it's only the battery that's at issue. If they want to see the phone just say it's private and you don't want them looking at it. Maybe even take the battery out in front of them as you're talking at the counter so that the phone is turned off, and they have the battery to instantly look at. Should be an obvious / easy swap out for them...

No worries, good luck! It does have the default Google 'People' app, which is the same as the Contacts one. And for music I installed the Google 'Play Mucic' app which isn't bad. The only thing I miss from the Samsung 'TouchWiz' rom is their camera app.

I didn't know the People app was the same, cheers for that
I went for winamp but tbh its layout is awful and I found it very buggy that and my phone battery was already swollen up! haha.
Will report back with results!
thanks once again.
Got a new battery and not had any issues with the rom at all, only issues I did find was that having my SIM PIN enabled got the phone stuck when it booted, I had to take my sim out and put it in my girlfriends phone to disable the sim lock, after that no issues.
I'm in two minds of if I should reflash it or not tho as it now has a **** ton of my apps, I have used titatnium backup before but I find it to copy my buggy software and back it up then reloading it on my new rom hahah!
But a fresh flash might set it straight for longer avoiding me any future headaches... hahah
Anyhow thanks for all the advice.
Peace

[[SOLVED]] Process system isn't responding

Hi,
I rooted my phone 2 days ago and installed custom ROM everything went well, except for today my phone start to lag too much, so I decided to flash back the stock ROM that I have downloaded from Sam-mobile using Odin 3.08, but now my device not responding to anything and even I get "Process system isn't responding" in Samsung wizard installation also the sound disappeared and when try lunch any app like camera I get message "camera failed" and keep getting "Process system isn't responding".
[[The Solution]] for Process system isn't responding follow the steps: ((ONLY SM-N9005))
1-Unroot your phone if you are rooted.
2-Factory rest your phone and clear cache. .
3-Flash the Stock rom for your device.(if this fixed the the problem stop here if not continue to step 4)
4-Download this ROM and flash it by Odin 3.04.(this rom somehow managed to restore my EFS files and fixed the problem)
and that's it.

This sounds a lot like the issue I've been having (see details in the thread I posted here).
Any insight would be very welcome.
Yup bad root (it can and does happen the odd time!), clear cache etc in download mode, then reflash the new Stock ROM, then wipe cache etc again in download mode. See if that helps.
Similar issue I had previously after I originally rooted was apps kept closing and saying stopped working. When I wiped the ROM and updated via KIES to MJ7 with wiping cache etc, it seems to have done the trick.
EDIT: Also try ODIN 3.07 rather than 3.08

Unfortunately I've tried all of this too (except using Kies, it won't recognise my phone though I'd never tried it before now) to no avail.
I might try a warranty swap, but I'm concerned because the system status shows custom and I'm unsure there's any way to reset it. I suppose my only chance is to try for an on-the-spot swap for a new phone, because if it gets sent back to Samsung I expect they'd reject it due to the system status.
Still can't understand why the issue persists beyond reflashing the stock rom...

Can't Enable WiFi after return to stock

I downloaded the SGH-i337m stock firmware from: http://galaxys4root.com/galaxy-s4-stock-firmware/
It loads just fine, but I can't seem to enable WiFi. I'm thinking there is either a problem with that ROM, I don't think it's actually true stock firmware, and actually custom TouchWiz rom, or maybe something else.
I need to get this phone back to stock asap. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks

I would boot into recovery & go down & choose "Wipe cache partition" then once it's finished I would go to "Wipe data/factory reset." It worked for me when I flashed stock Nb1 tar file on my i337. Yours is i337m, Won't be 100% sure if it'll work for you, but it did for me. Goodluck

Help, lost my sound!

Hello fellow romers!
I recently decided to go back to Touchwiz but I failed. So then I went back to Temasek's CM12.1. Everything was fine until I decided to go full wipe and go v.15 (I was previously on 12.4 I think) and then I did something wrong. I went and did a full wipe on System (don't ask me why, I'm just stupid). So now I have no sound! Everything works as it should but the sound is completely gone.
I have tried reinstalling the phone to complete stock via odin but nothing works. I tried go back to a previous working backup that I have saved but it didn't solve the problem either.
So, to me it sounds like my drivers to my sound is gone or corrupt. Can I reflash it or something? This is really screwing me over since I really don't have the money to buy another Note 3. Help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Thought maybe you flashed a lower version.
Why don't you give it a fresh start? Absolutely cleaning whole internal memory. With latest cm12.1

Well, that's what I'm trying to do right now. But ever since I installed the stock firmware my computer refuses to connect to my phone. So I can't do a backup of all my files. This is just getting weird now. The phone is extremely slow and it keeps saying "Music has stopped working." and it won't let me do anything because of that window... I am seriously thinking about breaking the phone in half at this point. I don't even know if my modem works, and I'm going back to work tomorrow! Damn, I'm getting really stressed out because of this.
Alright, I am in deep **** here and I really need help! How do I do to go back to complete stock?! Like, totally cleaning out my device and reinstalling it?! The phone is absolutely useless and I need to go back to a working state with everything working.
How do I hard reset my phone using odin?
Just got it to work. Apparently I had a bad version of Odin which made it impossible to flash a rom. After I redownloaded Odin to 3.04 it worked perfectly.

Yeah, everything is working now. I flashed the stock firmware with the right region code and everything went back to normal. Why I couldn't flash it was because of a bad version of Odin. Felt kinda stupid for not trying that before I posted here. Thank you for the replies!
