[Q] Factory Restore S4 ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello.
I want to factory reset my ATT S4....
i tried installing a recovery with TWRP...did not worked...then tried with Safestrap....this caused my phone to get the recovery messed up..when i do into the recovery it goes to could not do normal boot odin, odin mode......
thing is i want to know how to fix this....
i want to factory restore my phone so i can upgrade to kit kat...
the firmware version is a MK2

You need to get into Odin mode and then I'd flash the nb1 tar in Odin. Pull the battery, put it back in and then use the key combination to get into Odin mode.

[Q] Can't go into recovery. May have softbricked.

Hi there. I think I soft-bricked my phone. I am running mf3 firmware on my i337 galaxy s4 and i tried to flash Graviton. I was using safestrap and I, like an idiot, didn't use a romslot and did it over my stock. Seemed to work fine until I actually booted the phone. It can't access wifi and therefore wont go past the find wifi screen. I try to enter recovery but it just keeps going to the download screen. After trying every way I could find I still cant either wipe my phone or flash the stock firmware. I have tried kies and odin but nothing works. Can anyone help me out or am I royally screwed?

as long as the phone can go into download mode, you can use odin to reflash the stock firmware (and factory recovery). Check samsungupdates for your model/region and stock/official firmware. You'd have to re-root after. I did the same thing a while back, lost my recovery and this is the method I used to bring my phone back to life, was just sitting at the samsung logo and had no recovery (but had download mode).

Does Odin recognize the phone? Also, when you say it won't go past the "find wifi" screen, does that mean it booted to the "Welcome" screen?

Sorry should have edited the first post. I actually fixed my original problem and am now having a different one. I got all the way through nd did a restore of my stock rom. I then tried to flash the graviton one to a different rom-slot in safestrap. So now there is a completely different partition in the storage and the flash didnt work so I'm now completely stuck in download mode. I have tried to flash the tar files in odin and it fails every time. I should have all of the necessary files for mf3.

If you have the 16GB Galaxy, try flashing this file in the PIT slot in Odin.. Don't put any other files in the PDA slot, etc. It's worked many times when phone would only boot to download..

Hey Nerdyblonde, what does this pit file do?
I softbricked my phone when trying to flip from CWM to TWRP. (Thought I could just wipe phone and odin flash on top of CWM... VERY WRONG). Now I can't get into recovery and my phone is telling me to use kies recovery *shudder*. So I tried kies when I couldn't Odin flash to stock rom and still nothing.

Sorry it took a few days to answer.. The Kies screen was the same thing that happened to me... I have the MF3 version, so I can't install custom recovery, but I couldn't boot into recovery period. I flashed that pit file in the pit box on Odin, it restored my recovery.
Do you have MDL or MF3? If you have MDL, I would be really careful not to flash MF3 unless you want to stick with basically stock until one of the geniuses here figures out how to unlock the bootloader.

[Q] So many issues... (Kies, Recovery, Firmware)

Hello.First post here.
I currently have been using CM11 for a few months now but miss some features on stock. (multiwindow, air view) so I installed Sacs ROM.
Everything was working great today except a known problem is wifi will not work due to radio opbstructions (i believe). So i attempted to change the baseband to MF9.
At first, Odin started then immidately it failed. The error read 'Fused 4 Binary 1'
So i assumed it was a connection error. I loaded back into download mode and tried again. Failed.
At this point i thought screw it, and took the battery out. tried to reboot and stuck at the soft brick "Firmware upgrade encountered and issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again"
I installed Kies. Plugged in my phone. Drivers installed but Kies will not connect. Try to do 'Firmware Upgrade and Initialization'
However Kies will NOT accpet my S/N number. i tried everything. writing it all out or with a space every 3 numbers or with 'DEC' at the front. nothing worked.
I even called sprint to double check S/N (ESN/DEC)
so basically I'm soft bricked and Kies is screwing me over. Any ideas?
Have you tried to odin back to stock?

Yes but it takes all but about 30 seconds to root again
You could go straight to sacs after rooting.

If you flash a full stock tar you won't have to flash radio.
Do a search please for the tar.

i searched around and eventually found a working .md5 file. its apparently is stock. got my phone to start booting but it got stuck at the yellow sprint screen. im going to try to boot into safe mode. any ideas how to access my recovery file? i have one form CWM and one from Ti Backup
which tar did you flash through Odin? MF9, MK2 or NAE?
IF you were on MF9 and flashed the full MF9 tar you can try and flash again. Just power off phone completely, go to download mode, attach and run Odin. (same for MK2 or NAE) BUT if you tried flashing MJA/MK2 or NAE you cannot go back to MF9. Things you should have read about already.
If it hangs on boot after flashing, power off completely, boot to stock recovery and do a factory reset and then let it restart first reboot can take 5 to 10 earth minutes.
You can then root via CF-Autoroot or Saferoot, install goomanager to grab a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) OR Odin said recoveries (Philz, TWRP etc.)

I think i fixed it.
Problems resolved.
The issue was i had Sacs v4 which didnt support wifi and i read that it needed MF9 firmware.
i had a lapse in judgement and without thinking tried to go back from MJA. didnt catch it until now.
I eventually found the correct stock file. eventually got into the phone. rerooted and in the process of install the proper sacs ROM (v5.6)
this was a simple error that i shouldve caught thanks guys!
hopefully this ROM will work with wifi...
BTW, all my backups were wiped
Your backups weren't on your external sd? Ooo, that sucks. Glad you got it.

Soft brick without recovery mode, can't connect to pc

I had been running cwm on my i7337m s4 and decided to change to twrp because I was having problems flashing cm11
twrp did not work to flash cm11 either so i decided to go back to cwm using the app. I tried to boot into cwm recovery using the app but each time it went back to twrp recovery. So I thought I could use mobile odin pro to flash the cwm .tar file. When i tried to flash cwm using mobile odin my phone soft bricked. I think it's a soft brick at least, I can get into download mode but not into any recovery mode. I have tried to connect to 2 different pc's (both recognize my other s4 and s3) using the usb that came with my phone and several others but nothing works
Any advice is appreciated
Have you tried Odin? You're probably going to have to Odin the stock firmware and start over. As a last resort download flashify and flash a twrp or cwm .img file

use another PC. install Kies for the SGH-I337 driver and try it again. see if the odin version is compatible. i would get odin from deadly venom kitkat magic tool.

problems with booting up

So, I'm having a big problem with my S4 at the moment. After having some problems with several apps, being that I couldn't properly open, restore, or uninstall them (I think it has to do with Foldermount), I decided to format my external SD card, and perform a factory reset. Everything seemed like it was working well, and when it rebooted and asked if I wanted to repair root access, I said 'yes' (not sure if that has anything to do with the issue). Then, after some time, it went on with the boot up. However, it was stuck at the samsung logo. So, I tried to go into download mode, like people were suggesting. I held down UP volume, and the power button, but all this does for me is turn off the device. I can't seem to get into recovery mode to perform another reset, and I can't even get into download mode. Also, when I try to turn off my phone using the power button, while it's in the seemingly infinite boot up, it instantly turns back on. The only way I can turn it off is by removing the battery. So, any help would be greatly appreciated, I have no idea what to do. Thanks in advance
To get into download mode hold vol down, power, and home buttons. You might have to flash the stock firmware in Odin at this point. What recovery are you using?

Huh, well, download mode works. Could've sworn I'd already tried that combination. I guess I'll try using Odin. Sorry, what do you mean by 'what recovery'?
Update: Just tried the flash recovery with Odin. I think I did it right. I then went into recovery mode (turns out was doing it wrong), and cleared the caches, did another factory reset, then did the recovery reboot. Even after that, I still can't get past the infinite boot up load screen. Any suggestions? Thanks

What recovery are you trying to flash in Odin? And do you know what firmware version your device is on? my guess is that you're on a firmware version that you can't use a custom recovery other than safestrap. You're most likely going to have to flash the stock firmware in Odin to get your device to work.

I'm currently trying to find a proper download link for the stock firmware for my phone. My version is 4.4.2 by default. I was trying to flash the wrong recovery at first, and then I tried a clockworkmod touch recovery, which hasn't helped. Unfortunately, I can't find a legit download for the stock firmware. I337MVLUFNI2 – TLS, it's the name of the stock version of my phone, while using the latest 4.4.2

Help me recovering from this boot freeze

Hello.
I was having trouble with my phone so I decided to return to stock so I could make a clean install over it.
My phone is the N9005 (european unlocked) with previously the N9005XXUGBPB2 modem and bootloader and I was trying to flash via Odin this file: N9005XXUGBOK6_N9005OXXGBOJ2_N9005XXUGBOJ1_HOME.tar
Which version of odin do I use? What do I tick/untick in options, should I flash another file? I really need to get the phone working.

It's successfully flashed but hangup at boot animation?. Factory reset from recovery.
Sent from my SM-G925F
I always use Odin 3.07. Open Odin, uncheck everything except f reset time, select the ROM in the PDA box, connect phone in download mode, flash ROM, when flashing is finished, remove USB cable from the phone, remove battery, replace battery, use buttons to boot into recovery, factory reset/wipe, reboot.
