I am yet to receive my SGN (Friday fingers crossed) but I am not a fan of the 'iPhone style' interface ofTouch Wiz... I will definitely be installing Launcher Pro or GoLauncher but will the S-Pen still work on the home screen (gestures etc) I am not too bothered about the widgets as long as I can get access to notes via a double tap and navigate the screens with the pen
The pen works with everything and the samsung widgets can be used in other launchers...
Im using and testing out LP at the moment and it seems to work fine.

Excellent! Thanks
It also works with go launcher. S-memo and screenshot also working fine.

ADW and Go Launcher = laggy on the Note
Launcher Pro = smoooooth
does anyone have a clue how the s-pen works?
How is the feature with the button realised etc???
I would like to hack any other stylus with this button feature.
or does anybody know if i could use a wocom stylus together with the Note.
Any hint is welcome.

iv'e seen on a youtube vid i don't remember which one, that you can use a wacom pen, and even use the eraser! (turn pen upside done...) and erase!

Check out my thread on the subject:

And please let us know if you find anything new!
Man, I tested a demo set and the pen was SERIOUSLY off. Whatever I wrote was like a 2-3 pixels off. The only thing the staff could tell me was to send the set for repair if I ever got this issue. They quickly removed the demo set after I showed them the problem. I am pretty sure Samsung is not going to replace the WHOLE screen just for this issue, anyone discovered anything yet?
i have the same problem.
i cant write with this poor precision...
need to recalibrate the s-pen... or the screen, i dont know...
Me to... i hope there is such a thing because if i zoom in a screenshot and draw something the offset is over 3 mm for me
Have none of you realized that this is intentional as a result of left and right hand mode so that you can see the line you are drawing? its not a calibration issue at all.
maybe...
but it's stupid.
i want a perfect precision, not at 2-3mm....

As was mentioned above and in another thread all Wacom tablets/pens behave this way so that you can see what you are drawing, not just the note. It takes some getting used to but after a bit of practice it'll become second nature to you, just like the first few times you use a keyboard in your life and you have to search all over for half a minute for a single key
All that said I would like more options exposed for the pen/digitizer just like you get with a Wacom tablet such as tip feel and tilt sensitivity and calibration. Perhaps we should all send Samsung an email requesting a settings app for the pen, and/or ask Wacom if they intend to build an app for their pens for Android since they might appear on more that just Samsung devices now.
Or maybe we'll have to wait for ICS for proper pen settings. Then again someone crafty on XDA might manage it.
I use a lenovo x220T tablet PC with a wacom. On the computer, it will show a little dot wherever you are hovering over the screen. This dot makes a 1-2 mm offset easily usable. Does the galaxy note have this little dot when you are hovering over the screen? If it doesn't, that's the problem...
Maybe once the SDK is out we can create an application to make this dot visible.

Haven't seen the hovering dot for pen in apps I've tried so far
I also use a x220t and wish the calibration capability was available on the Note.
have you noticed that you can switch the screen from switching off by keeping the stylus about half a cm from the screen.. the stylus seems to have a method of interacting with the note without touching..
I am not sure how others take notes and avoid this issue, but when I attempt to take notes on the Note, almost always my palm touches the "Menu" or the "Back" capacitive button and the note in progress either gets saved or cancelled.
I was looking forward to writing on the note extensively for note-taking, but it seems impossible with the palm touching the capacitive buttons. Would a developer with know-how on this subject look into disabling the capacitive buttons while taking notes with the S Pen and the palm placed on the screen, or devise another solution? Thanks for exploring this issue in advance.
Please note:
Anyone commenting on this thread, I appreciate your intentions, but please DO NOT suggest ANY OTHER APP. I am purely focused on the S Note and Memo apps.
Well there is a way to disable the buttons on many roms already. Are you talking about a way to do it while unrooted? And are you trying to keep the touchwiz interface and use the smemo app??
No, You can turn the light off, but the button sup works. I think he wants to disable then completely.

Yes, I was wondering if the buttons can be disabled completely while taking notes, regardless of the ROM. Taking notes while the palm is lifted off the screen is just not natural and am not sure how Samsung saw people writing like that.

There are few apps in the market that have palm reject feature. This will disable the capacitive buttons.
Even the standard s memo should have this feature.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24989757&postcount=4537
here is a script to disable the capitative buttons, it works perfectly on stunners rom ( haven't tried on any others ) and with the euphoria control you can disable the lights so those buttons are gone forever
I think this issue has been addressed in the new ICS stock ROM. For example, if you use your finger to press the capacitive button in S Memo, the button will work as intended. But if you place your entire palm on the right-lower part of the screen (including the capacitive button), the button doesn't respond. I just tried writing a long note with my palm resting on the screen and the capacitive button, and the app was working fine.)
I don't know if it makes a difference, but in the S Memo settings, I had set the screen to only respond to S Pen edits. Just FYI.

Setting the screen to respond to just the pen helps a lot actually, but as you slide down while writing, the palm becomes less of a palm surface and touches the back button and the note gets saved. So it would greatly help of someone can disable the capacitive buttons altogether until some action is taken to wake them up.
The script suggested in the post above seems like an option but a simpler solution would be great.

It will be nice if someone can help to disable this annoying button.
There's no way to detect the palm everywhere - it would require quite a few painful changes in AOSP.
There is obviously a way to disable capacitive buttons totally, but you'd need to reboot to toggle.
As I said before since the later releases of GB rom , when using s memo , there is an auto detect feature which rejects palm and also disables the capacitive buttons.
Try pressing the capacitive button with the s pen close to the screen.

I confirm. I'm on official ics and the capacitive buttons are disabled when the pen is too close to the screen (and it's anywhere not only in smemo)
Now, I got the trick. Usually I put my palm before the pen reaches the screen.
User should put the pen then they can put his palm wherever he wants, nothing will happen both buttons are disabled.
TEST in ICS official LPY.
Thanks a lot.

I understand what you and alupatti are saying but when I am writing on the screen, the palm will slide down and it's not always you can focus on placing your pen first on the screen.
Thanks xplodwild for your input, too, as a developer. It just seems like a case of poor design which we are stuck with, unfortunately, until there is a real solution.

The pen need not be on the screen. It activates when the pen is a few mm away from the screen
It might look silly but consider taking notes with your phone upside down. That way the evil capacitive buttons won't get in the way
Disable buttons
Check my sig....flashable zip to disable and re-enable the back and menu button.
Doesn't affect the lights, just the functionality of the buttons.
@tremeron. Do you think your disable buttons flash zip can be adapted like a on/off switch on toggle bar or somehing like that?
they are times when I don't want note to zoom in because my palm registered before my s-pen did. It's only and I can't believe this wasn't a default option on ALL S-PEN. The s-pen gives unparalled accuracy so I like to use it non-zoom and write small.
There's an option to enable 'palm check.' At least on my Note 2, which I assume is similar. Waiting on my N8000.

Yeah, I agree. I think I will just buy a glove though that covers my palm. I still want the ability to zoom, but I Just don't want it happening when I'm trying to lay down lines for art.

I'm not quite sure what you're meaning by palm check, there is a function for "SPen only" but that one only disables the one finger touch that is for drawing etc. Disable the multitouch for zooming and pan however, isn't possible in SNote at this point.

Anyone having problem with SNote, please contact Samsung and tell them about it and demand a solution. Hopefully with enough people complaining, Samsung will realize that the new SNote isn't any good and change it. Preferably allow us to downgrade SNote to the precious, working version.

I agree. Samsung keep developing the device and they have not look into their most important application. Are they even serious with their consumer? Sigh..
agree! I found it really annoying everytime I use it to take notes. There should be a lock zoom mode in the s note setting.
I agree that S-note could have a few features like locked zoom and hide toolbar... those would be great. I like the new snote though. I dont think you guys should call Samsung to complain, just suggest. Maybe someone on xda can release a downgrade apk?

Or just a two finger zoom that actually worked and not recognized the hand, just like the old version. Just of curiosity, what do you like better with the new one? Do you maybe have a different version of the new SNote that actually works?
That's what I'm hoping as well but there are a couple of different threads around an so far nothing has really come out of them.

I have the snote that came with jb 4.1.2 US n8013. The UI feels alot faster, the spen button to switch to eraser is an awesome feature. It also switches from formula match to eraser and then Back to formula match which is very good since id always make the mistake of going to pen and losing my formula. I cant think of anythinf else atm but i can tell you that apart from the zoom, i havent had major issues with it.

Simple trick to Lock the zoom
Hi,
When I'm writing using S Note, I lock the zoom by using my other hand's 3 fingers to touch the screen.
when you write the usual way, you will notice that it will not have any annoying zoom anymore.
hope it works for everyone too.

So if you're right handed. You use your left hand's 3 fingers and hold the screen while write with your right hand? That sounds like a pain. When I take notes I just make sure the spen is sensed before I put my palm down and no zoom. Takes some getting use to or make it a habit.

I discover how to dont zoom with hand on display
When you want to write with hand on display, you must first do this: put your thumb to the corner and THEN you must start write and put your palm on display in one time! since that your moves of hand display doesnt recognize and doesnt zoom, you can go to another list but you must have your thumb on display all the time or do it again (put hand and write in one time). Its not 100% but usually works and have thumb in corner isnt so annoying. . .
It requires root, but I added 'Disable finger input' action to my spen control app. It disables all finger touch (and capacitive buttons on Note 1 and 2) until you execute this action again or turn screen off. I implemented this after I got tired of accidental zooming on Note 10 and hitting capacitive back or menu on Note 1. My drawing experience is completely different now. Needless to say, S Pen is fully working in this mode and it disable finger input in all apps, not just S Note.
Do you think its worth making a separate application just for this? It would still require root .

That would be a blessing. I purchased your Gesture Control app and is really helpfull to hide the Nav bar and prevent the annoying Notification bar from showing every time I'm writting within SNote. Maybe you could make a setting within your app to block any hand touch within the S Note app. The only issue I have is that I have to add S Note to blacklist to prevent gesture control from executing accidentaly within S Note. I haven't got the Spen app yet. Do you think the S Pen gesture app would add a convenient way to go back to home screen without having to turn the screen on and off, in order get the Nav bar back?
I really recommend Gesture Control and S Pen Control. Those are one the top 5 five apps we must have for our Galaxy Note 10.1

I have the US version of the N8013 too. I had mine just rooted before the update, i did the 4.1.2 update and haven't found a way to configure the S Pen button to work as an eraser within the S Note app. I even spent $40 to buy the S Pen with eraser so I wouldn't have to click back and forth between eraser and writting mode from the top bar. Pardon me if I've being a Dumb Ass!!! If a press twice the button it goes into brush mode, if press it once thereafter, it goes to marker mode, and after that if I press the button once, it switches back and forth between brush and Marker mode, but never goes back to regular pencil mode unless I reach the top bar and change it back that way. I checked for pen settings under S Note settings and general settings, and I just can't find anything to configure the S Pen button to perform a particular action.
I didn't do a factory reset after the update. Do you think this could be the reason, and maybe I'm just having bugs due to it?
Maybe I have do a complete factory restore, any suggestion on Stock base rom with full S Note functionality?

You can download spen control (trial) from thread in my signature and it has 'disable finger input' action. I don't want to expand on other features as this is not the right thread, but spen app allows you to execute all actions similar way to gesture control, just gestures are executed with spen. I'm just wondering if it is worth making root app that just does this one action - disable/enable finger input.

the problem is pen function guys :\
Jay, i mustve misscrolled when i quoted you, i was trying to reply to the OP. I;ve used to beta test SwiftKey and really loved it, but weirdly i dont feel comfortable at it on the Note 3.
@OP, even though i use the pen lightly, with the Google Keyboard, before you activate it (text input), hovering above the text box with the pen opens the small button pen input. No idea if that is Google or Samsung (TW), dont know if the Pen Input is recognizable as a keyboard. Soft Keyboard wise, the Google one feels very good.

If you guys still wanna use the s pen with any non samsung keyboard I'd highly suggest you download the Spen board switcher...search google or xda and you'll find it...what It does is allows you to choose any keyboard for the keypad the as soon as you pull the s pen out, it switches to Samsung keyboard s pen pad. I personally love the note 3 keyboard, as I am super fast and accurate on it, but i use my script stylus vs stock pen pad, as my script is the base apk that samsung use for their keyboard handwriting recognition and I feel the stylus beta is much better than Samsungs version. Anyway the board switcher allows you to use whatever keyboard you want and not lose s pen.
