When I go in Google Maps, and I try to do navigation to a place, it says "No GPS Hardware - Turn-by-turn navigation is only available on devices with GPS hardware." I have my phone on high accuracy mode, and it even did this in battery saving mode. I run Cyanogenmod, so could this be the reason? I recently updated it, and then once I saw the error, I tried updating it again to the latest nightly, but I still have the error today.
Oh yeah, and I tried downloading another map app and it doesn't seem to be working either. When trying to locate me in Google Maps, the location is sort of off, by around a mile.
I have the same problems ,had to go back to m10 version and it work again

Hi.
I played around with some applications using GPS and noticed that my Xperia was pretty warm a few hours after I closed down the last GPS application and the battery was drained a little bit faster than usual.
I then tried to start Google Maps and instantly(!) got a GPS fix.
So my theory is that the GPS remained ON since last time it was used.
Is there any way to see if the GPS is active or not and how to prevent the GPS to remaining being ON after the application isnt using it anylonger.
I doubt it was GPS. GPS alone would hardly warm the device (IMHO). It must have been some program running, or something preventing standby. Wasn't whole google maps running ?
if you havnt changed ur location after the deactivation of GM, thats quite normal behaviour.
it (other GPS SOftware aswell) seem to check if the last known location is the same and if it's the same, u get an instant fix.
my n95 behaved the same
I didnt use Google Map.. I used AmazeGPS.
And My Xperia gets a little hot when running GPS. =)
No applications was running at all after i closed AmazeGPS.
a small note.. after opening google maps, enabling GPS and then shutting down GPS and closing google maps again my xperia is getting colder.
So my guess is that AmazeGPS enabled the GPS.. and then the GPS was constantly on until google maps reinitiated and closed the GPS again.
So.. Is there any application(for the today screen maybe) that can show if the GPS infact is enabled or disabled?
Hi everyone,
still having problems with GPS.
on eclair i could not get it to work at all.
flashed to froyo 2.2, went out side, started iGO and BAM...
was working great, satelites found in under 20 sec. navigation was fast.. all good.
turned off gps for the night to save battery.
went outside this morning, turned on gps, and no satelites found...
waited for 15-20 min, turned off the phone with gps on, started it, result the same.
no satelites .
any ideas on why is that?
I have been using galaxy 3 gps foe some time around...
even i had the same problem on eclair...
googled like hell and found out this...
dial this code...
*#*#1472365#*#*
its for galaxy s but
works for our phone also...
i try to make some changes in the setting and den run gps test
you can download the gps test app from the market
once the satellites are found on gpstest, i run brut maps..
ie hacked version of google maps..
then navigation works well.... worth the trouble
pls suggest any improvements in above method of finding satellites.. i am also having problem regarding gps..
On FroYo, the correct code is:
*#*#3214789650#*#*
Did you tried GPSopt ???
Search on Market for "octy" or GPSoptimization...
Yeah,
after running gps test for about 2-3 min, jump to navigation app, it works great.
but it kinda sucks to do that every time you want to use gps, or just to leave it running and suck the battery dry in a few hours.
also,
i tried octy's GPSopt some time ago from the market, but it didn't do anything significant for me to notice, and it's not free, but have 3 free uses... so i guess it's not a long-term solution.
Hey guys I am new to the community and just recently picked up a vibrant for being a loyal T-Mobile customer haha.
Anyways I just wanted to point out something that I noticed while trying yo fix my GPS issue or non-issue. I have detailed my steps exactly so please read below:
1. Got vibrant out of the box and after 5 tries connected it to mini kies and updated to 2.2.
2. Applied GPS restore from market. It did not work at first, but after stepping outside it worked.
3. Tested the GPS and it works, I am amazed and thought the issue is fixed.
4. Went to my other residence 50 miles away, tried GPS, big fail.
5. A week later I remember the GPS issue and try it again at my place, fail again.
6. I became curious and tried Google sky, with GPS on. Google sky reported longitude and latitude. I am in shock because I thought the GPS was broken. I turn on Google maps and bam, location is found again.
7. I become more curious and try the same approach 50 miles away at my other residence, bam location is found again.
My conclusion is something is up, can any of u guys explain and/or try my method?
Thanks!
I've found that google maps doesn't like a cold GPS start, that is, the first time used after changing locations or waiting a few hours. But if I use another gps program, like gps test, wait for it to lock (which is usually pretty fast), then close out and open google maps I'll get a near instant gps lock since it's a warm start. Something about google maps doesn't seem to want to convince our phones that it should get a gps lock.
Google Maps is terrible with cold starts. The solution is to use GPS Test to lock into more than 4 satellites and then open Google Maps. You were basically doing the same thing with Google Skymap, but Mike Lockwood's GPS Test is better because it keeps polling the GPS while you check Maps.

+1 I found this to work the best as well. I use Ulysses Gizmo though
Either way, with the New KB1 modem (you can flash that by itself) this REALLY improved the GPS
thanks guys your input helped me clarify alot because i always thought my GPS was broken because of google maps didnt show my position.
The iPhone I had and my mytouch 4g and g2 both do not have this problem, this is vibrant isolated, correct? I mean the cold start to the GPS from Google Maps.

Plus 1 - KB1 has great GPS.. I did however have the hardware problem. So the combination of fixing the hardware problem and KB1 has my GPS running better then ever.
i picked up a focus 1.3 for my wife for a replacement because she broke her phone. i cannot get the gps to work. would not work on 7720, i forced update to 8107, still would not work. just installed the clean rom 2.0 (8773) and still will not work with maps, nokia drive or garmin street pilot.
i can't figure out why it's not working, but my wife really needs gps. are there any fixes?

Try GPSInfo. I used to recommend GPS App (has Bing location), but now that is paid. GPSInfo gives you info about:
- GPS State
- Mode
- Accuracy (H/V)
- Course
If GPS State doesn't state "GPS Started", you have a HW problem.

it states started, but it's only using a-gps for location. which will not allow me to use on any navigation apps.

It should say "Full GPS mode, satellites data" when fully working.
Make sure you turn off ALL data connections, you waited at least 10 minutes under a clouded sky and you are not in (or very near to a building) You do need to see the sky to get satellites.
If after 10-15 minutes under a clear sky you still see "A-GPS Mode" your hw may be affected
LE: A possible cause I can think of would be wrong drivers/firmware issue. As a possible way to fix that you can try flashing a stock rom or a custom rom. Normally I caution people away from custom roms as I've seen several "stuck at boot/samsung logo" through out the forum, all tied to custom roms. A stock rom is the firmware meant for your phone and even if you start from scratch at least you know it's the right thing for your phone. If you want to try that, see the post in my signature.
even with the 7720 update through zune, i had this issue.
i did revert back to stock, turn location off, then did the updates. all the way to 8773, and the gps would lock after a few minutes outside.
however, while driving, with the garmin app, all of a sudden my "vehicle" went shooting about a 100 yards off the road, then it never was right the rest of the trip.
so the gps seems to just be working intermittently, or whenever it feels like it..

Considering 8773 (Tango) was not yet officially released/tested for Focus, I need to ask: is your phone a Focus (i917)? If so, it might explain some if the issues you're having. I would suggest staying with stock 8107 for the moment, but ultimately it is your choice. Also, make sure the phone's drivers are updated properly, 'cause if they don't, what you're going to get is issues...
like i said though, it was the same deal from 7720 on up with the updates from zune. i'm going to try to to revert back to 7720 and install the samsung drivers for mango cab that i have.
GPS
Had similar GPS problems on Focus 1.3, tried different ROMs, etc. Only decent fixes I've found are pulling the battery out for ~30 minutes and turning on find my phone in settings. Not sure why battery thing works, but have seen the same suggestion for a lot of other phones.
Problem is my fixes have been temporary; GPS works for a while, then gets flaky again in a few days, even after reflashing.
Other Samsung phones that came out around the same time as orig Focus w/ similar HW specs had people tearing their hair out with GPS problems (Captivate, Galaxy S). Unfortunately, general consensus in Captivate forum seems to be problem is 75% hardware. Those guys tried endless SW / OS tweaks; some helped a little. Unlocked mine to try to find similar tweaks, but haven't solved the problem yet
I'm not sure how much of this, is the phone or the ROM or google maps. I'm using MOAR ROM.
Any way first issue:
1) If you are Navigating and receive a call after a few minutes it will squawk that it can't find your location !!! This never happened with old google maps (prior to V7) on my HTC M7. Nor this phone with old google maps. Why would the GPS stop locating you while on a call. I thought it might be this phone, in how it works. But my wife just got the message on her M7 today. I know all about assisted GPS. That is for getting initial lock. Once locked it should be just GPS tracking.
2) It's been hoping location like crazy. The route will take you say on a exit ramp but the Software assumes you didn't take the ramp. Reroutes, then reroutes back when sees it's way off. It's been really bad lately that I almost don't want to use it. I swear it's Google MAPs though. Your location isn't always accurate enough to know what lane your in and it should assume you are on the route. I've seen it jump to parallel side roads while Navigating on the highway. It shouldn't do that and your location isn't always accurate enough for it to differentiate that and should assume you are on the route it gave you.
By the way I have been running the old version for quite some time. But past few months it's been having different issues, like search not working well because I think it was getting too old to work anymore. My wifes M7 was having the same issues. I actually like the new version now, when it works. I finally talked her into switch and she saw issue #1 today. Don't know yet if she has 2nd issue or not yet.
Anyone else have these issues.
I wasn't sure if there are some hidden setting or specific ways I should set my location settings.
I had "High Accuracy" on and I just switched it to "GPS Only" and see if that helps.
I have been experiencing #2 since the last few app updates on both my GS5 and my GS3. So I've been pretty convinced its not device dependent.
I see this #2 on my S5 and my S3. It also makes Waze not find my location until the Google Maps force closes itself. Then it all works. Prior to the force closing, an app like GPS lock will show that it has a very good GPS lock despite what Google Maps thinks. It's google maps and just keep reporting feedback through the google maps app.
Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you did a full clean wipe before flashing? I once dirty flashed on v1.1 and that is the exact problem I had.
I mean....no offense, bro. Even if you did a full wipe before, do a full wipe again. Always TiBu your apps, it'll take less time to set back up.
Version 2.1 does seem the best yet. Also remember to set up everything BEFORE enabling Xposed Installer. Less chance of any FC's.
