I asked this question in a Rom thread because I'm not sure if the VPN is not working bc of the specific ROM or bc my device is rooted...
Has anyone tried using a vpn on this rom? I use witopia, and when connected to my vpn, I'm not able to access Internet at all. Just trying to figure out what's going on.
More info: the folks over at witopia said that some roms may be incompatible for vpn use.
When using WiTopia, I went to their instructions for Android following this method:
IPSEC VPN Setup
Go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> VPN -> ADD VPN
Set the following:
Name: (Any Name You Want)
Type: IPSec Xauth PSK (MUST BE THIS)
Server Address: Click Here for Server Names
IPSec Identifier: WiTopia
Pre-Shared Key: witopia
Save
Connecting
Click on the name of the VPN to which you wish to connect.
Enter your VPN Username*** (will usually be W\YourEmailAddress)
(example: W\[email protected])
I have done this exactly, the VPN shows connected but I can't access the internet at all. Anyone have any ideas on this?
Here's a few places to look:
The "Use Encryption" box should be checked in the VPN connection settings on the android device, when using IPSec
Try getting the Android device connecting to the VPN server (by IP address) over the local wireless network first, before you try it over the Internet. Your router may be blocking it.
On that point, make sure that the appropriate ports are forward on your router, TCP Port 1723 and GRE Protocol 47 must be opened/enabled and for L2TP ensure UDP port 1701 is not blocked also UDP ports 500 and 4500 if using IKEv2 for the VPN tunnel.
Hope it could help.

Hi guys,
I don’t know you guys can help me or not well My problem is
I’m trying to connect my I-Mate PDA2k to Senao Wireless Assess point my access point connected with my network switch .My access point showing WAN light and on my mobile also showing “W” its mean PDA getting signals but I can’t access internet from my PDA.
I don’t know how to configure access point I took access point without catalog and serial cord I don’t we use serial cord or not.
In simple words I want 2 access internet without GPRS.
Information:
SENAO
2-port switch wireless router printer server
SL-2511SR PLUS(F200)
MAC 005018578BO
I-Mate PDA2k Microsoft
OS windows 2003 CE
Local network
IP Class Local = 192.168.0.XX
Internet Sharing = ON
Look for help on configuring your the Senao web site for configuring your wireless router: www.senao.com.tw. I have an access point and it's working like a charm with my Blue Angel.
If you don't have a DHCP server or you have not configured your wireless router as a DHCP server, follow these procedures on your PDA:
Tap Start, Settings, Connections (tab), Network Cards (icon), Network Adapters (tab), tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Etherne....
Then check: Use specific IP address. You'll need to set values for IP Address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway. You IP address should be (quoting you) something like 192.168.0.xxx and subnet mask is probably 255.255.255.0
Also be sure to tap on Name Servers, and fill in the info there, you'll need a DNS address to access the Internet.
Finally, to configure your proxy server, go back to Connections, Advanced, Select Networks, and create a new connections and configure the proxy server accordingly, if it exists. If you're supposed to connect thru SecureNAT (ie Default gateway), you can simply ignore this step, or create a network profile that "connects you to the Internet" without specifying a proxy server.
Hi all,
I live in a property next door to the company i work for, and the network is linked into the apartment. I have a Wireless Network Access Point in my apartment.
The thing is....DHCP is deactivated on the whole network, and everything runs through proxy servers.
To do this, I need to choose the option that my wireless access point (called scanthor) is used to connect to Work right?
Also, I have gone into settings, connections and modified the proxy to be correct. However, where can I set a valid IP address for the connection??
I'm guessing in Network Adaptors setting right? But which one is the wifi card, there seems to be about 5or 6 in there!
Hope someone can help, thanks in advance!!
Ben Kay
p.s. Using O2 XDAIIi
Try | Start (menu) | Settings | Connections (tab) | Network Cards (icon) | Network Adapters (tab) | tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Etherne... | Then check Use specific IP address. You'll need to set values for IP Address, Subnet mask, (most likely 255.255.255.0) and Default gateway. Also be sure to tap Named Servers, and fill in the info there, you'll need a DNS address to access the Internet.
Still not working..... I've set my IP address under tiacxwln Compatible Wireless Ethernet Adaptor. Also put in gateways, dns server etc as taken from ipconfig on my desktop work computer.
Then, i have set the wireless network to connect to "Work" and in Network Adaptors, under the box ..my adaptor connects me to...work is selected there also.
Finally, under connections and "My Work Network" I have put the proxy settings in correctly (just Http and socks)
No luck though. Sometimes it works but unbelievably slowly, sometimes nothing...very annoying.
The proxy server is AVM Ken! www.avm.de
Is this the problem?
Ben
into teeny weeny little pieces.
I feel so much better now!!
Anyways...I have a wireless home network up and running and would like to connet the xda to it.
I can connect to the router no probs but IE cant connect to the web. it says "the page you are looking for cannot be found".
Any ideas why I can connect to the router but not to the web?
Cheers folks - thanks
I know how you feel. There are a couple things you have to do.
First check that you have selected to connect via "work".
Then ensure that the IP address shown is in the range of 192.168.0.X
had no problems with my wifi on my home network, as ale210p said, I think it's with the way your connect via "work" or "ISP" is configured
hiya folks
thanks for coming to my rescue..hopefully i can get this thing on the road.
- in connections - advanced - select networks. both selections are set to "my work network"
- in configure network adapters - network adapters. the "my network connects me to" dropdown is selected to work.
- where can i check my ip address on the device?
Alhtough I am connected to my wireless network as that what the wireless LAN manager says?
any ideas guys?
many thanks
Is your internet provider checking the MAC address? my provider checks for the MAC address and hence I had to register my MAC address first with the provider.
I'm pretty sure my ISP isnt checking my MAC address as my PC and other computer on the network work fine with regards to internet access and I never gave the MAC addresses to the ISP.
However, my modem router does have mac filtering enabled. I have copied the MAC address of the xda to the allowed list. However I've also tried to turn this filter off and the result was the same....I still could connect to my home wireless network but had the same error message when trying to surf through pocket IE.
Any other ideas on why I can connect to the network but IE wont let me surf?
thanks again
I'm having exactly the same problem as Richard. What I don't understand is, I can drive around and find free residential wireless hotspots and surf the net , but I can't do it on my own WLAN!
IP info OK?
These symptoms could indicate that vital IP info is missing on your XDA.
Does your XDA get an IP address + gateway address + DNS server address from the router's DHCP server? Use vxIPConfig to determine this http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html
I know for a fact that many times (not always) my QTEK 9090 does NOT get the required IP info from my SMC Barricade 2804WBR b/g wireless router, so I started using fixed addresses on my QTEK.
If I use DHCP, many times I can connect to the router but am unable to access the internet... Because the QTEK has not received an IP address/gateway address/DNS server address in those cases. Fixed addresses always work.
whoa
thanks for the advice. i installed the app. rubbed the sticks together and there were sparks i tell you!!! but what does it all mean?
the ip address is 169.254.84.245
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
dhcp server 255.255.255.255
im no tekkie so am not sure what the above means? does it provide any clues?
thanks for the advice so far
just an update
i manually inputted the ip address assigned to my xda by the router as i have dhcp disabled on the router.
nonetheless it sill doesnt let me connect to the net but i can connect to the wlan?

Fixed IP address is good, but have you also put in the gateway address and DNS server address? Normally the gateway address + DNS server address = router address.
If your routers IP address would be 192.168.1.1 (quite common address), then your IP address could be 192.168.1.2, gateway address would be 192.168.1.1 and DNS server (name server) address also 192.168.1.1.
BTW; this:
the ip address is 169.254.84.245
subnet mask 255.255.0.0
dhcp server 255.255.255.255 <========= !!!!
means that DHCP didn't work!
I suppose that when you state "connect to the wlan" you mean that you can 'see' machines on your local network? Or what? That would make sense because you wouldn't need a gateway address and DNS server address for that normally (broadcasts).
siliconaddict....you're a genius!
finally it works, it works i say.
fantastic.
thanks to all for the advice and feedback - much appreciated.
can i stoke the fire and ask how i can sync via wifi as well?
never done it myself, but here is a guide
I have never synced over WiFi myself, but here are some guides:
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/WM2003/ActiveSync/WM2003ActiveSyncConfiguration.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=132820
Please note that the next version of Activesync, version 4, doesn't do syncing over Wifi anymore...
Good luck!
Sorry to be a complete noob, but:
1. How do I find out the IP Address of the XDA (Is it in Wireless LAN Manager, under "current config" and "IP:"?)
2. My Netgear USB WLAN is showing an IP of "0.0.0.0" (on command prompt >> ipconfig) How do I change this?
Thanks
Q & A
A 1: On your PDA use Use vxIPConfig for this http://www.cam.com/windowsce.html. Unfortunately the OS doesn't have a standard utility for it, like 'ipconfig'.
A 2: Does your router hand out IP addresses at all? Or: is DHCP enabled on your router? If true, do you have the correct drivers loaded for that USB NIC? In Device Manager how does it look? Yellow exclamation mark? Can you post the output of 'ipconfig /all'.
Hey Folks - maybe somebody can shed some light on VPN setup WM5/6
HTC-AT&T tilt / HTC-Tmobile 8125
I can't get either phone/network connection working for L2TP - I'll set up the connection on the server for PPTP, but for now let focus on L2TP
First - my Openswan server accepts L2TP connections from my laptop, so I know that the server side is OK
Second - I have used the Settings/Connections menu and added a modem under My Work Network, same settings as the modem for the Media Net(default network)
Modem details:
Name: Number
VPN1 wap.cigular
Select modem: Cellular Line(GPRS,3G)
Access point: wap.cingular
no user/pass/Domain
server assigned IP address
added a VPN with the same setting I use on my laptop
and try to connect by 'manage my existing connections' clicking the connection and 'connecting' it opens a 3G(At&T) connection I see the timer ticking if I check the connection. I don't think the network connection is right on the T-Mobile connection - no timer for a connection.(anybody have the T-Mobile network settings)
VPN1:
name: test
hostIP:XX.183.105.172
vpn: L2TP
preshared key
username & password
server assigned IP
But I get no data in the browser URL http://192.168.30.30
I see in the browser a info msg saying locating, and then it says opening...
but nada on either phone.
PC pops the web page up with no problem,
Third - yes I do have data plans for both phones ;-)
Lastly - yes my PC address is NATed, and I don't THINK that the AT&T address is NAT'ed (anybody??)

I ran across this : http://www.tutorials-win.com/PocketPC/PPTP-Issues/
which details entering dot'd addresses as an exception or it will drop the connection, which is what it looks like it is doing for a straight IPSEC connectio via TheGreenBow sw(which does not pass data either)
Here are the logs on the server from the laptop:
Feb 3 18:29:18 fc5 l2tpd[9768]: Connection established to 74.166.195.61, 1701.

I think that the compression control msg is MPPE but it should not be...
Any and all thoughts are welcome - I'm pulling what little hair I have left out...
Many Thanks

Hi Bob
Ok
First thing do not create a modem under the my work network section it needs to connect using the internet modem. If you have a modem under my work network it will try to directly access your work network via this modem and not start the vpn connection.
You should only have the modem section filled out for the connection for the internet. So Under settings connections you should have wap.cingular setup for internet. You can then setup the vpn settings in the my work network under edit my vpn servers. In this section you can press on the vpn and select connect.
Or you can make it connect automagically by adding exceptions for intranet addresses in the settings/connections/advanced section. ie *.my.domain.com/* or */* for everything etc.
One other problem if the wap.cingular is using the same nated address range as your internal network you will also have problems. ie if cingular use 10.x.x.x and you internal network is 10.x.x.x.
Regards
Stephen
PPTP VPN connections will not work on the wap.cingular APN. wap.cingular uses a NAPT to generate your IP address. NAPT does not support GRE packets which are necessary for PPTP VPN connections. However, I have read it is possible to setup an IPSec VPN across the NAPT server, although I have never done it.
I am able to connect to my home router's PPTP VPN server from my Android phone's PPTP client. I can even see my remote LAN devices; and, my remote LAN devices can see my mobile phone on the LAN.
The problem is when I connect my phone to wifi Internet.... BEFORE connecting to my PPTP VPN server... I can't see the remote LAN; and, the remote LAN can't see my phone. The only thing I can do successfully is get a new public IP (my home Internet public IP).
What can I do so that I am able to use my local wifi Internet connection to connect to my VPN at home?
It might be a route problem.
When you connect to WiFi, some static routes are pushed to your phone.
Those routes might not be refreshed or conserved after a VPN connection.
If it is not a route problem it's a default gateway problem.
Yes, that's what I suspected. I already tried adding routes; specifying the gateway via command-line; however, I didn't have any luck; probably because I didn't know exactly what I was doing.
One thing I noticed; when I use my wifi internet hotspot, I noticed that it gets a private WAN IP.. 10.x.x.x; which then NATs to a temporary real public IP; which no connections instigated from the outside world can make it So, even if I do port-fowarding on my wifi hotspot router, it doesnt help any since the incoming connections are stopped dead in their tracks.
I'm using PPTP VPN; which depends on a TCP port 1723. If that TCP connection is instigated from my remote VPN server into my mobile Internet wifi hotspot based LAN devices, it wouldn't work for the same reason explained above. I didn't see a PPTP VPN passthrough option for my wifi hotspot; only for IPSEC; which I dont have a server for. I'm guessing that if I had a real-world public WAN IP for my mobile Internet hotspot, maybe I wouldn't have this problem for PPTP.??

First, are you talking about a free internet hotspot or from private internet hotspot (@work for example) ?
you'll never gonna get a public IP from your internet hotspot. 1-public-IP-for-1-client on a hotspot is just inconceivable, due to IPv4 exhaustion.
I think you only have to try to do port forwarding on your hotspot.
Your assumption "it doesnt help any since the incoming connections are stopped dead in their tracks" is wrong I guess. If your hotspot has a built-in firewall, it might be stateful. As you are initiating a connection to your server, the returned traffic flow shall be allowed.
If it doesn't work after port forwarding, try to look at firewall rules on your hotspot router.
Problem resolved.
My Verizon wireless hotspot (890L) doesn't support PPTP passthough. More specifically, PPTP's routing protocol: GRE (value 47). Verizon does offer another wireless hotspot that does offer support for PPTP; at least via a firmware update.
This issue actually pushed me to install and configure OpenVPN server on my router; instead of using the existing PPTP server which I already had. OpenVPN is fantastic is working through firewalls.
Great !
Yes, OpenVPN is a delight.
me too
I have the same problem,
but I usually change another ROM until there's no bugs

have you tried to configure the wi-fi gateway to match your vpn router?
settings / wireless & networks / wi-fi / long press your vpn connection / modify network / scroll to show advanced options / select static ip /scroll down to gateway and put the gate address in / save
I run a vpn through a 2 router setup, and even though my phone connects to the vpn router, its gateway by default is always the non-vpn router. changing the gateway to the vpn router allows the vpn to connect to the phone. you can verify the vpn connection by going to ip-score.
That why i can't see my phone using wifi in VPN network..
cant connect if theres no mobile data or load
Hi please help ..when i have load i see its connected..but if i have no load its not connecting please ..anyone can explain this?
