[Q] Android L: Available Without OTA Update? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. First off, I'm new (this is my first post) so if I say/ do something wrong, please be considerate.
So I read somewhere that the new version of Android, Android L, might be coming out as early as December for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Earlier this year I got a Galaxy S5 and as it is my first Android, I wanted it to be the best it could. After a while I decided that it would be a good idea to root it, but as it is a Verizon model, it didn't look like I was going to be able to since the bootloader is locked. Luckily once towelroot came out I was able to root it, thankfully.
A month or two later, an OTA update came out, for Kitkat 4.4.3, and after several tries at installing it, I figured out the hard way that once you root your phone, OTA updates don't work anymore.
With all this being said, I'm a little concerned that I wont be able to get the next version of android on my phone. Even if it does come out in an OTA update, I know I wont be able to install it and since the bootloader is locked, I wont be able to flash it onto my phone.
Is there any hope that I'll be able to get Android L, or am I going to be stuck with Kitkat 4.4.2?

I don't know anything about L coming out but you can get all the updates you want. All the info you need is in threads here and in the general forum. You can always odin back to stock and take OTA updates. Or you can install which ever version you want via odin and then root from there.
Edit: In reading an article a while ago over @ techradar, I think we'll be seeing L sooner than you think. The thinking seems to go that when the Note 4 drops with L on it, Sammy will push it to their top tier phones right away after that...

Confused by the correct order of updates: OTA, Root, Froyo?

I'm sure this is somewhere on the forum but I've made a best effort searching/reading for the past hour, and am now more confused. I rooted my incredible a few weeks ago in order to get the tethering feature to work, and this was before the OTA update from VZN came along. everything works, no complaints.
Since 1) I did not get the OTA update, and 2) I eventually would like Froyo, I have a few questions:
1) Do I need the OTA update?
2) Will I need it in order to get VZN's Froyo update whenever that becomes available?
3) If so, should I wait until that announcement is made?
4) If I unroot and get the OTA, can I simply re-root in order to get the tethering feature back?
5) Would I be able re-root by following the same instructions as when I rooted the first time (unrevoked3)?
6) If I unroot/install OTA update/re-root, how do I get VZN's Froyo when it is released? I assume I would need to un-root again, and then wait for the update?
7) Am I just as well off unrooting/installing OTA update/re-rooting and getting an unofficial version of Froyo? I am in no rush for froyo and do not want to risk messing up the phone for it.
I assume some of these questions are answered on the forums but like I said, the instructions I found on various threads seemed incomplete. Would greatly appreciate answers/links to answers for any of the questions.
Thanks
if your happy with the way the your phone is right now than just wait till the official update comes out.
You'll likely be told the update is available on your phone, but if you want root, you won't want to apply that right away.
Hopefully some magic like Evo update is done for us... the Evo update has already been rooted and pulled apart.
Thanks binny and k_flan... So I'll just wait for VZN. Can I install the VZN update (Froyo) directly or would I have to un-root first? No way to know this I suppose, but will the VZN Froyo allow wireless tether or will I have to pay extra for the feature?
My plan
My plan at this point is to wait for the OTA and then for unrEVOked to see if they can root it. If they can, I will RUU back to a stock rom, and apply the official update. This will guarantee [1] VZW to handle if I brick, and [2] that I am running the real radio and the real 2.2 (instead of the buggy beta which is making the rounds).
If they can't then the decision gets harder. I suspect that my desire for the 2.2 will outweigh my need to still be rooted.
What I know i WONT do is jump through these hoops just to install a beta radio/OS combo. If the radio wasn't at issue, it would be a different story.
np OP. You won't want to install the VZW update, it will likely not work with unrevoked's reflash tool.
I also have to correct what I said earlier, it doesn't appear it is the final build that was rooted for the Evo, but the radio was pulled from the final build and used with a rom.... Either way, it seems they've got the official radio (at least, that's how it looks for now), hopefully that happens for us, and official radio img.
Fair enough. still getting up to speed on terminology.... i assume reflash means un-root - is there any way to reset the phone to be able to get the VZ update/froyo?

[Q] I've become an Idiot. (For Sprint)

Alrighty then, I've been gone a good while, and now no longer know what I'm doing, which I know is dangerous.
I'd picked up an S4 for myself and my mother last Black Friday, and that same night, rooted both our phones. I also know that within a good week, an OTA update had been put out, but I'd blown it off, as I couldn't get it going and finishing up my bach and getting into grad school took over my life. That said, I recently got my father's line upgraded to an S4 (it was a dollar and he wanted it, so eh). It forced me to remember my own phone and it's horribly outdated self, and so I have returned.
As it stands now, I do not know what or how to go about getting this puppy up to speed, or even how to really explain where I'm at software wise, so I took a couple snapshots of the phone info, hoping I could get a hand with it.
Any help you guys could give would be appreciated.
Also, not sure if this means anything, but the System update it says I have downloaded will not install.
You have android 4.3 and the latest version is 4.4.2.
Upgrade to 4.4.2 for your phone and then you can flash the latest custom roms for android version 4.4.2 if you are out of warranty and do not wish to use knox.
Youre not outdated. Just a version behind. There are not many changes in 4.4.2 stock rom.
Thank me if I helped

Google Play Edition 5.0 - will 4.4.4 ota work for it?

I have a I545 verizon galaxy s4 and am thinking about throwing the google play edition version 4.4.4 on. However with 5.0 lollipop around the corner I wanted to make sure I could do an ota update easily since I am not very knowledgeable about performing updates myself. Anybody know if it will work as a ota update?
Never
@feraay is right. All the Google Edition ROMs available have been "tweaked", in order to make them work properly with the different variations of the Galaxy S4. So while you might be able to download the actual OTA update, it will not work properly with your device.
Though, installing updates manually is not particularly hard. You can use Titanium Backup to save your apps, and then download the update yourself once it's available for your S4 edition. That said, you might as well then just wait until 5.0 is out.
thanks and that makes sense. Shouldn't be too long from now for it to arrive. Unfortunately I have been hit with a terrible verizon update that makes my phone restart all the time and want to root and flash it, but with 5.0 coming out so soon I would rather do it once so i'll wait

Update PG2 pushed, install or wait?

I was just pushed the PG2 update and I'm on official stock rooted PF4. When I look at the update.zip it says its build G900VVZW2DPG2 at around 108 MB in size. Let me know what you guys think [safe to install directly or not and wait].

Wait. Last Friday, I put the file in the existing update to thread and mentioned the two main people who have been making rooted versions for a while now. They haven't said anything last I looked, but I have yet to check for anything today.

Sorry about that. I tried doing a search for PG2 in the threads but didn't find anything. I see your post now. Hopefully they can get something worked out soon.
It doesn't say PG2, most of the threads update their names once they have put in a new way; but no one has done that for PG2 yet. Most people were not expecting us to get another update so soon; so I am guessing they haven't checked it yet.
Im debating whether to mess around with it since my phone is just plain jacked right now. I think my PF4 update didnt go well or something cause I only am getting about 20 minutes of battery life when I was getting over half a day. Now that we are 2.5 phones away from this one, I doubt there will be much support to root the updates.
Downloading full PG2.
I will build new rom flashable via twrp/flashfire.
Update
I upgrade from version to G900VVZW2DPG2.
The update addresses any errors Stagefright the probe and all this norrmal. I am now in version Saturday the G900VVRU2BPB1 aver if I can make root
Hello friends I installed the update PG2 and I have not noticed changes that can be noticed and the security version only came up to September one, if they know of any other changes please share
In case you haven't found it yet, here is the thread to upgrade your rom to rooted PG2. If you wish to upgrade your bootloader to an unlocked PG2 bootloader, the first post also includes a link to the thread which deals with that.

So its not just me. I've had my phone sitting at my desk, untouched, streaming spotify for the last hour, its at 20% after a full charge. I had it in my pocket Saturday at a basketball game, it was down to 50% after about 25 minutes without touching it.

[Q] Nougat update UK (wifi version)

Hi All
Hoping you can help as i am struggling to understand how this all works with this manufacturer. I got this tablet yesterday and love it so far ... upon starting the tablet i was greeted with an update notification that i initially figured was for 7.0 - turns out this was a patch for 6.0.
This is all great except i noticed in another thread that someone with the same version and based in the uk received the update. Mine wont find it. I tried the PC software to see if this would work as it used to on other manufacturers (Sony for example) but it said i was up to date.
I would prefer to update the official way if possible (not my first BBQ, have had more android tablets than you can poke a stick at - have resorted to all sorts of ways to get the next software before)
Any ideas anyone ? least possible effort as i don't want to corrupt this awesome piece of kit !
From what I can tell they roll it out in waves based on the device's IMEI. I also haven't received it in Italy when some people in neighbouring countries have. I guess all you can do is wait. By the way, corrupting the device is not that easy, if you want to test Nougat right now, you can get it using Firmware Finder, then you can roll back to the regular version using a rollback package you can find on Huawei's website. Worst case scenario, you will have to factory reset, but it won't be a big deal I guess since you just got it. I was able to roll back from a failed flash of Nougat just fine, then reflashed the correct version of Nougat and used it for a while, then rolled back again because I heard the official ota is coming, and it always worked just fine.
Ok great thanks for confirming. i almost went for the galaxytab s2 again (my wife swindled me out of my old one ! ) but glad i didn't - this one runs better on 6.0 than the s2 on 7.0 i noticed.
