They were a little hard on the screen it seems...especially given the fact that color levels are adjustable.
Yes they thoughtfully provided some suggested settings though that may be worth trying out.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty cool of them! I personally like things a little bluer, so I'll probably do something like:
Red 200
Green 140
Blue 0
I am a bit worried about the headphone volume output for the phone. My primary use of the phone is as a music player when commuting such that I enjoy high volumes levels. The comparison to other phones like the One M7 worries me this phone may break my primary purpose, despite appealing to all my preferences. I hope there is a sound mod similar to Sound Control that will address that otherwise I feel this would break my decision to buy.
You could also use Equalizer to increase volume.
As soon as it's rootable, there'll be plenty of sound mods available :good:

nice!!
I hope the colour accuracy issue/tint was just on their one handset.
If not....anyone on here with the requisite expertise have any tips on a good technique for doing a self-calibration using the r/g/b/ sliders etc??
It's something that's been discussed. A couple of suggestions were:
Red 250
Green 190
Blue 0
Red 200
Green 140
Blue 0
I guess its a case of trying stuff until your eyes are happy with it. At least Sony gave the option to be able to adjust it, other handsets you're stuck with what you get.

SO.......done some more looking around on this. If you guys head on over to Expert Reviews, they have a review of the z3 (full size). In that review they say the display has an unusually blue tint which they had to correct to achieve acceptable results. Thought that might be useful info. I know its the compact we are getting...., but I'm sure it wouldn't be crazy to presume the display calibration is the same.

Hardware Info:
- There's no specification of the screentype in the manual or on the box. It looks better than de Touch HD in brightness and colour, but i can't say for sure it's an SLCD.
- Compartment for SIM + SDHC is nicely finished and apparently a lot more resistant to dust and stuff than the Touch HD. (Cover here is fine).
- The camera does come out pretty far. Not really annoying, but it is a bit like a pimple.
- The sound from the build in speaker is good. It lacks some bass, but what else is new. It doesn't have a great max volume, but it sounds overall beter dan de Touch HD. (much less schrill)
- The piece around the flash is a patch of rubber/plastic from the same material as the battery+sim cover. It's just a little thicker, so it sticks out a bit. Very little though. It's properly attached and doesn't come loose.
Additional info (speed and such)
- To sync with my Google Apps it does need Google Talk? Never heard of, let's find out.
- The link to the HTC Sense site works well and the lag between them is really minimal. Click on the site to make it ring, and the DHD starts ringing immediately.
-Surfing is (with 3g) a whole whole lot faster than with the Touch HD. On the THD you'll have to wait for it to render the page and the pictures, on de DHD it's all done in a second or so.
- The Sense skin (and Android ofcourse) provide a far better user experience than the THD on WinMo.
- The rendering of the windows is instant, just as the browsing and the animations. I'm not yet familiar with Android, so I don't know what's normal.
- There's no CD in the package, only a small quick guide with the insert-battery stuff in it. The phone isn't on the support site from HTC yet, so the full manual isn't available yet
-Important: if you're going to use the phone to synchronise with Google Apps or go to the marketplace (or in fact to anything whereby you need a google account) you need to enable the service 'Chat' in your Google Apps dashboard. Else the phone rejects your account and gives an error about google talk or so.
-By default the languages are limited to: English, Francais, Deutsch and Dutch. You can get a keyboard in Turkish and many, many other languages (including arabic as far as I can see)
-The power off (hold powerbutton and choose power off) takes some time (measures:....5 seconds). The powerup then takes 1 or 1,5 seconds. Very quick! All apps are closed during the shut down.
-The restart (really a power off and a cold reboot) takes about 30 seconds.
Results:
Quadrant
Desire HD - 1879 points
Nexus one 2.2+ - 1300 points
Samsung Galaxy S - 800 points
Nenamark1 gives a score of 33,6 FPS.

i was just about to post that! It does look really good compared to the other phone which is using LCD i presume.
However in picture 5 it looks like that black patch around the flash is about to come off. Is it meant to be like that?
look at the screen next to the touch hd, Im sold...that screen looks fine to me, the camera looks like its going to get some serious table damage though, still, I feel much happier now and maybe I wont be going on and on as much....mmm then again

i actually dont think the lens will be damaged because if you look closer at that pic, the lens is slightly beveled in. The edges are protruding very slightly so the edges might get scratched, but not the lens.
I know this has been covered a number of times in the reviews and such from Anandtech and other personal reviews but does anyone else feel the contrast on the Xoom is lacking?
I just came from an iPad1 (and still use an iPhone4) and am a total Android newb. I find that playing movies on my Xoom leaves a lot to be desired in the color department. The contrast really isnt super and leaves a lot of colors looking very similar in the movies I've tried so far.
Is this exclusively a screen design or is there an ability with the Android OS to tweak some of that as Honeycomb gets further along.

The tweaks might have to be made or enabled from within the kernel. I haven't seen this type of dev work on motorola devices in the past but I've seen a ton of it done for Samsung android handsets such as the Galaxy S phone line and the Nexus S, of which I am currently running a modified kernel which allows me to adjust the color settings to the Super Amoled screen aka Voodoo colorfix. With this kernel, I can literally change the red green and blue gamma settings and color adjustments as I please using the Voodoo Control app from the market.
Hopefully, we could see some thing like this done for the Xoom.
Good info ryan562!
I was killing time in the Motorola forums last night and ran across this:
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/342735#342735
"XOOM Picture Quality is WORSE than iPad2 [Sadly]
Just wanted to drop in. We are reading all these threads with interest. It really helps to get this kind of detailed feedback.
There are some things that can be done via software to try to meet the expectations of more Xoom owners. So, we're not sitting on our hands. I've been told there will be adjustments in future software updates to address at least some of the concerns you've expressed.
(And no -- I have no information on timing or what enhancements to expect. )"
I read that as well, hopefully something can be done in software to squeeze a little more performance out of the Tegra 2

Check the screen for dead pixels, lifting, ghosting, backlight leakage, etc.
Run some intensive games, watch a hd movie, for 30min or so to heat it up. See if it's stable.
Check connection like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.
Check speaker at highest volume.
Open as many apps as you need, see the performance.
These are in mind now

dead pixel =>as i know there are some apps on android market to test that or should i do it manual ?

lifting + ghosting + backlight leakage
General rule of thumb... If you plan on buying electronics, you should do as much reading about it before you get it so that you can hit the ground running when you get it in your hands.
A lot of what you are asking has been described many times over in the threads with lots of detail.

One question I do have in mind: I have read that some people got a washed-out screen with dull colors. Though, the examples I have seen on the net is a lot worse than the display I have! Mine seems quite normal at first, but the contrast is low and the colors seems muted. They don't sparcle, and white seems overexposed.
Is this a defect? Or is this "normal" among Nexus 7 users?
I've read that the calibration is way of, and if so this should be more or less a common problem.
Other that that, I've been very lucky it seems

Okay so I've owned this device for about 4 hours now and I love it and hate it... I am finding miniscule issues that my previous phone (Galaxy Nexus) did not have. So if you have time and knowledge on tweaking the device, read further. Okay first off the resolution is 1080p, but the size of everything is gigantic even for this huge screen. Nothing feels proportionate. Lets start with the notification drop down list, the remote is huge and takes up almost 1/2 the screen, the shortcuts take up at least and inch, as well as the qslide apps another inch. That leaves 2 inches to view actual notifications... Next the phone is fast, so why should it be lagging whatsoever? I have a feeling its Verizon and their 20 preinstalled apps which likely run nonstop. The navigation buttons are integrated into the screen the background changes clear when on home...and when changing from any app back to home I can visually watch the color changing...and it shouldn't be so slow on a brand new high end device which is supposed to be the best... Again I blame Verizon and I probably won't have that issue later after rooting and finding a suitable rom without bloat. Okay now lets talk about the keyboard and how it takes up 1/2 of the display. Couldn't 1080p be capable of running a much more compact keyboard? Between the large keyboard and text input box you can see bout 1 1/2 inch of the text or webpage when the keyboard is open. Its just so ugly. The status bar has oversized icons I guess to boast how large the screen is but it's ridiculous the Nexus had great graphics and small icons on the status bar so the user could utilize the space for notifications and save actual screen space. Same with the navigation buttons...they could take up half the space. I'll continue playing with the phone and post more issues as I find them and maybe someone who knows more about this phone will be kind enough to share their insight. Thanks very much.
Oh yeah, also volume level. Didn't they resolve low volume issues a couple phones back? I think its a marketing scam, they give us almost everything we could ever want, but leave the volume low to piss us off enough to buy the next phone...which will have loud speakers but a 720p screen...or a lower pixel density...

For notifications: In the top "settings" bar there is one called "q-slide" (if it isn't there, add it to the bar). Simply de-activate it and you now have 1/3 more screen for notifications. Made a HUGE difference for me.
Swiftkey for the keyboard. IMHO, nothing comes close to it. It's $3.
Nothing to do about bloat until the ROMs reach a more mature level.
It's not a perfect phone, but I think it's the best one currently available.

As far as the stock messaging app and seeing so little of the conversation, you can install the cm aosp MMS.apk that another person posted in the forums. I just did it and it works great, I also installed the aosp Google keyboard which is quite a bit smaller than the lg keyboard.
As far as the speed goes try debloating if you're rooted. If you're not rooted just go into application manager and click on all the vzw apps you don't want and uninstall the updates, delete cache, and then disable them. Works almost as well.

VZW Clean Rom 1.0 is great and debloated!! Most of the issues you have are easily fixable, but no phone is perfect. I have zero lag 99.9% of the time! Where is this great lag that you are getting??

Want a monochrome display on your phone? Think kindle paper back display, its kind of cool and saves some battery life, and here's how to do it.....
Step 1: go to "settings"
Step 2: go to "about phone"
Step 3: go to your "build number" and tap it about 7 time it will say "you are now a developer"
Step 4: go to "developer options"
Step 5: go to "simulate color space"
Step 6: select "monochromacy"
And bam you're done, your phone will now display in black and white only, to undo this just go back and follow step 4&5 and then select "disabled" have fun
Glad to see I'm not the only one who loves greyscale. It's odd in a lot of areas but fun none the less.
Yea I think its really cool, and a good thing to set it on while at work or out for the day and not really on the phone so much, but have a phone that gets poor battery life, it helps.
awesome! there are also other color modes
Yea there are 4 options for other color modes
I wonder how much battery it actually saves
Hmm interesting for reading books.
I would rather enjoy the full potential of this great phone. pedal to the metal and no slowing down is how I like it ?
is it possible to know the "simulate screen colour" antivity and make a shortcut on homescreen for easy on/off
i have been trying to know how to find current screen activity name for this monochrome feature, but in vain
can anybody help????

well i dont know if its possible but if you can combine it with buildin battery saver option via a tasker or iftt shortcut maybe you can simulate touhwiz battery saver feature, which mean if you have amoled display in your phone this could really help
i have been trying to do this.but i need to know how to get simulate screen colour>monochrome activity name and make a shortcut for it
does this make nexus 6 a little laggy for any one else? and i read somewhere that it stresses out cpu as it is doing extra work to simulate monochrome.
---------- Post added at 10:54 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:51 PM ----------
also can anyone confirm if it makes battery last longer. because when i last used it it was all laggy and i was getting battery drained faster than the usual 5-6 hours SOT i get without any issues.
why would monochrome save battery? all pixals are still being used, and differing shades of gray do nothing. sure, pure black helps, but grays do not(grays are most common in monochrome).

Troll? Why do you say that? It's a perfectly reasonable comment in reply to someone who buys a very expensive device with a superlative display and then neuters it for the sake of a few minutes extra battery time, and even that proposition is questionable.
Try again. Why am I a troll?
