Hi! This particular and weird behavior has been happening on my phone for a while now.
Whenever I put my screen brightness on the lowest level, a yellow, flickering, transparent bar appears overlaid on the dock area. No matter where I navigate on my phone its present on the screen. I think it has to do with the screen hardware because I cant take a screenshot of it. Maybe something to do with a screen controller. The yellow tint is simply present at low brightness.
When I raise the brightness again it simply disappears. I have no idea why this could happen. Anyone else had this happen to them before?

Try changing kernels. Example. Going back to pure stock. If the problem persists just put it to full brightness, watch a long video and put the brightness at low again. And see if that works. If not then it is probably a hardware problem.

I would like to have my screen brightness turned all the way down. This is my 2nd epic (1st one's menu soft key wasn't sensitive like the other soft keys) I go into the settings and set it that way as well as in the browser. I've tried having it setup with and without the power saving mode option selected, but no matter what, the screen brightness always changes to a higher setting on its own. I cycle through the power control widget and dim it back to 0 all the time but it doesn't remember the setting. I also notice that in some apps the brightness is raised i.e. market. What am I doing wrong? My bet is Samsung has an annoying glitch that they need to fix ASAP!

I noticed mine does that too. It will randomly be at a higher brightness setting. Also, the lowest brightness is WAY too bright! 0 on the epic is equivalent to 35 on the EVO.
Maybe when your pulling down the notification bar your sliding across on accident just enough to make it change brightness. Remember the brightness changes in your bar.....
i've got a vibrant but mine's doing same - hasn't done it that often, but does it
i found a small app for screen brightness control that displays the brightness percentage running as part of the icon, - just yesterday it had jumped from 11% to 52% on it's own
have no idea what gremlins are at work here

Coming from WM I was not aware of this gesture. I did notice sometimes when pulling the tray down it would do it. I need to read an android for dummies book and see if there's any other hidden jedi mind tricks that can be done.
I compared my brightness at 0 to an iphone4 all the way down, EVO, G1, Hero, BB Bold, and my former WM phones and the epic is way too bright at 0. I wish there was a way to keep the brightness set to the same setting when the screen dims in some apps, that would be ideal.
Good to see I'm not the only one with this issue and definitely getting a screen brightness icon in the notification panel will be very helpful to track samsung's shiesty shenanigans!
P.S.
The screen brightness increased on its own while typing this message from the xda app....

Yes but sometimes that's too bright, I'd rather have it set all the way down and stay down and raise it as needed on my own.

This is when a custom rom will be handy... no other way to get around it I don't think. I use adw and have my swipe down gesture for notification bar. That way I never have to reach all the way up.

There is a setting under Sound and Display > Display Settings, called Power Saving Mode. I disabled this along with the automatic brightness control and my screen brightness hasn't changed since. Not sure if this is your issue but couldn't hurt to try.......

He did say he have used this setting before.
There's the power saving mode AND there's also the automatic brightness control. Two different settings. I turned both off and I haven't really seen the brightness change since.
Incidentally, disabling the automatic brightness control (in the brightness menu) has greatly improved my battery life.

Fixter, you beat me to it.... We need to find a way to get the phone to stay dim like when the XDA app is searching/refreshing. This would be ideal if that would be the baseline for 0% brightness. I hate how the Eclair browser's brightness 0% is one tick higher than using quick settings to turn the brightness down. Too bad I don't know how to develop, as this would be the first thing I would fix!

I think that it's easy to accidentally change the screen brightness when pulling down the notification bar.
Once I realized that...I haven't had any problem keeping my Vibrant at minimum brightness.

I have figured it out been having the same issue since I got the phone was driving me nutsbut I have noticed two things one if u slide notification bar down a lil then slide left it lowers and right it highers and two sumtimes when sliding the notification bar down I sumtimes slide over light senson snd if hand is oily u produce a smudge over it causing it to lower brightness or higher
It really annoys me , is there anyone that have a real solution ? I tried every widget on earth to configure it to disable the "auto" and the brightness keeps playin up and down that is really getting on my nerves I sometimes want to throw it throught the window
I want the brightness to be fix from a level I choose, is that too much to ask ? instead of that the screen brightness keeps playing once up the other time shaking
please someone give me a true solution if there is one
Extended Controls??? Works fine for me
You may also try OneClick Widget.

Dont think mine has auto brightness, no tick box in the settings just a slider, and it stays where it tell it to, currently on 30% and it sticks

Nope the only thing I have noticed about the screen is that the sensors at the back of the screen are quite noticeable in sunlight on the Arc.

Yes.. when the brightness is set to abt 50% and when the screen is displaying mostly white (Facebook etc). Currently, i managed to reduce the flicker by setting the brightness to abt 70%. Kinda annoying.
Hopefully SE will fix this in the next update or let us just disable autobrightness.
Hi everyone, im having issues about Brightness on my S4, It goes down automatically for a few seconds and it's really annoying, im not using Automatic brightness, screen mode is on "Standard" not even on "Adapt display" and I already unchecked "Auto adjust screen tone" too...so...I don't really know if this is an Omega ROM issue or just the cellphone itself...can anyone please tell me if someone is having this same issue? It happens everytime and on any app...
Thanks a lot!

Nop...I dont have those things either...is like the screen is dimming but is not, bright goes low for a few seconds...idk...
Bright goes low for just a few seconds and it goes up again if you are touchong the screen? For me it sounds like timeout. My screen is also dimming after a few seconds.

UPDATE: The official Lux plugin for Nexus 5 is out now. Please use the official plugin instead. You can get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vitocassisi.lux.plugin.nexus5
So what does this plugin offer?
Higher quality astronomer/night modes and subzero adjustment
On screen buttons are adjusted
Screenshots are no longer discoloured
Improved contrast
No more screen overlay means slightly less cpu usage
Instructions & important information
This plug-in can only be used on rooted Nexus 5 devices using Lux Auto Brightness v1.3 or higher!
You must enable plug-in support under the Advanced section of Lux preferences for it to work.
Should you decide to uninstall the plugin, it's strongly recommended that you reboot your device.
Notes
Astronomer/night modes require kernel RGB display calibration support (Franco Kernel R37 and newer and maybe other kernels. Check with your kernel developer). I have only tested this on Franco Kernel R37. Backup your ROM before installing.
Download:
Removed. Please use official plugin.
Nice plugin, testing it now.

When my screen is close to timing out at 30, screen dims until screen turns off (which is normal). But the screen stays dimmed even after I tapped it before the timeout. Have to pull down notifications and either add or minus brightness to lux for it to go back to its supposed brightness.
Edit: not sure what happened, but its working normally now

My screen keeps flashing like the brightness goes to max for a split second then back down to where it should be. Weird. Running on Franco's r37
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Edit: it seems to be connectet to screen dimming before it automatically turns off. If I interact with the screen during this time period the backlight turns on and stays on and I have to manually turn brightness down.

Mine was completely the opposite but it's still tied to the screen dimmer. I'm sure this problem is fixable with a line of code.

Same thing, fixed after a reboot.
However my night profile doesn't seem to work. It doesn't go to a sub-zero value.
I'm on r38. The color balance is a little different from before the plug in, probably due to switching to rgb. The colors seem cooler.
I too also have my screen turn suddenly bright when the phone does the auto brightness reduction when it is about to time out. Maybe that's a Franco kernel thing. I would love to use this plugin with r36 because I had much better battery life with that kernel compared to r37 or 38, but I guess the plugin doesn't work with the kernels that don't support rgb. I haven't tried it yet though.
Lux also has to often times before manually reset to adjust the brightness even if I have it set to auto and dynamic. In other words, I'll have to go to the notification panel and either hit the refresh button, or click on the percentage and once the pop up window appears on screen, the light sensor picks up the ambient light and adjusts as usual. maybe this is a sensitivity thing? maybe it wont trigger the change unless there has been a large enough change in lumens?
I have a tasker profile that turns off lux temporarily and sets brightness to 100% when using camera and gallery, and turns lux back on when closing the app. This is a little buggy with the n5 plugin installed I have seen. The phone sometimes can't decide to stay at full brightness or go back to almost illegible screen when the cam app is open. It seems to falter back and forth for some reason?
Once I close camera, lux kicks back in and it usually works at adjusting the brightness to respectable levels, but I wonder if that wonkiness inbetween is lux, or the kernel I'm using?

I think that's a bug of Lux. Basically when you tune your brightness to a sub-zero value lux adds a semi-transparent overlay to your screen to make it darker. However when Lux detects a plugin is installed, it removes the overlay and so sub-zero values won't work.

I'm currently looking into this bug. It's caused by a work around to get the plugin to work with nexus 5. Otherwise your backlight stays on even after you turn your screen off, which is way worse than the fluctuation

I have this with the stock rom. No sub-zero values and no color temperature adjustment.
Awesome work! I wish I could help test but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place in that I'm using the CM11 nightlies, which apparently don't work with the Franco kernel right now, but I really want the Lux root features! Anybody know if the CM kernel supports colour changes?

I'm not sure that is a bug of Lux. Up until a couple of days ago I was using a Galaxy Nexus with the Lux root plugin and that let me use sub-zero settings just fine.
The plug-in is in the playstore now. I use the carbon rom, with the kernel it comes with. Is 3.4.75-Slim4.4.2-kk-build4.1-beta a faux or Franco kernel?

Your question doesn't make sense. If you're asking what kernel to use try them both and see what you prefer.

Screenshots never show hardware issues (i.e dead pixels, red screen issue, etc), as they are generated by software. You should take a shot of your screen with an external camera instead a screenshot.
