Didn't even flash or root yet and my 32 grey GT died last night. It had been working great and was getting ready to flash pershoots kernel this weekend. Last night I plugged in after shutting it down like I do every night. Today when I went to turn it on nothing. I tried holding down the power button for a while and still nothing. I tried holding down volume buttons with power for extended period still nothing. I even tried plugging into different outlet to see if something happened with outlet and maybe drained the battery overnight. Luckily I got it from Fry's two weeks ago on Friday right when they came out and Fry's has a 15 day return policy but this makes me a little concerned... and that's cutting it a little too close.
Has anyone heard of things like this happening with the GT? I'm thinking I may need to see if they'll still sell me the extended warranty. I babied this thing and hadn't even flashed anything on it yet. I'm a little concerned about the reliability of the hardware... I'm not usually the one with the needle in the haystack device that goes bad but who knows... I'm already in withdrawal without it.
Is there anything else I can try before I take it back? Maybe try plugging it into the computer instead to see what happens? I can't really see what else I could do since this thing doesn't have a removable battery. If it won't power on I can't imagine there's much I can test with the SDK dev tools from the PC using the usb cable?

I do hear the sound of a device being plugged in on win7 when I plugged GT in and got the driver message in tray. GT still won't turn on. When I hold down the power button every about 6 seconds my windows machine machine makes the same sound you get when plugging in a usb device in addition to an extra sound at the end.

You got the sleep of death. This is a honeycomb bug that i have personally experienced in the xoom, transformer, and the GT. The way to fix it is to unplug the GT, press the power button down by itself and hold it until the you see the screen turn on and startto boot up. It may take 15 seconds or more.
If that doesnt work, plug it into the wall outlet and try the process again. If that fails also, unplug it again and try the process once more.
That combination seems to work for everyone. The only exception would be if the battery is completely drained. You would need to plug it into a wall charger for a few hours and let the battery charge, and then try the process again.
I dont know why this hasnt been fixed by google yet, its really annoying. I thought 3.1 would fix it but it didnt.

I chatted with a rep from Samsung last knight and he told me that I needed to leave the Tab charging for at least 6 hours and then try again... so I'll let you know if that did the trick... hope it does...
I've actually had this happen on two different 32GB Galaxy Tabs (the original one I purchased and its replacement). After powering the device down it would not boot up.
In both cases it happened about 3 days after receiving the tablet and with 80-90% battery charge remaining. I tried additional charging, holding the power button down for an extended period of time, and attempting to boot into download mode - everything failed to bring it back to life.
I'm not sure what triggers this condition my only suspicion was that it may have something to do with enabling encryption on the device. On the second tablet I didn't have time to do much customization or install many apps but it ended up dying shortly after enabling encryption.
Wow. This happened to me yesterday with my 16gb from Sprint. Had come unlocked,yesterday 3 days in, died. I tried all the suggestions above to no avail.
Took it to corporate today. Now waiting on replacement.

ok, the nook im using has had a tough life, and for 6 months I thought it was completely dead.
Then it came back to life and seemed to be doing well for 3 months then it started going down hill
bottom line issue: The NC seems to be turning itself on during the night while I have it plugged in and charging. Then when I unplug it in the morning its less than 50% charged.
I had cm9ICS on it and other than poor battery life everything seemed ok, someone here suggested I go back to mirage to haelp the battery so I did.
I went all the way to a full format (cache apps, everything) then started building with Mirage, everything seemed to work just fine.
Then when I went to shut down it just reboots.
So I try pressing and holding the power button in all the way, until it completely powers off, and it looks like its ok, but then this morning I got up and went to unplug it, it was already on and the battery was down at the 50% mark
I really like the NC I have 2 others at home, one fr the wife one for the child, plus I have given 3 more as gifts to friends. BUT it just is not looking good here...
any ideas would be appreciated.

same thing on all of them.
now I have noticed that it only completely powers down about 1 out of every 4 tries.
If I use the soft power off option (press and hold for 5 then select power off then yes) the other times its just one big reboot
anyone had THAT?
To power off the nook when charging... attach to charger... press power button... select shut down from menu.
If you hold power button in to hard shutdown with it connected to charger... it is going to power cycle.
That is normal... and functions the same way if you put B&N stock rom on it.

Are you also using the stock wall adapter? In addition to the cable you need to have sufficient output from the source you are plugging the cable into. Most older usb ports only have 0.5A output and the Nook needs ~2A usb port (usually say iPad compatible).
If the Nook is running on a low charge it will have start up and shut down issues until it is sufficiently charged. It sounds like you may have issues other than that but make sure you are getting a full charge after plugging it in overnight and go from there.

Pretty self explanatory. It was dead for a couple of days, I put it on the charger for almost the whole day, now I get no picture, but the backlight is on when I hold the power down a minute. I bought it at walmart, doubt I have the receipt, and didn't get any extended warranty. Is there a way to fix this issue?
I've got the same issue. I was playing Tupsu, when suddenly my n7 rebooted and there was no picture, just semi-strong backlight. When the tablet died, the battery was about 45-50% and I was charging it through notebook's usb port (original n7 cable). I tried to turn it off, but pressing and holding the power button only made it reboot once again (i assume it was rebooting, since the backlight was turning off and on in a second). I've tried it many times, with tablet plugged into wall/usb charger, and even with the power+volume up/down combination, it would still behave the same way. However sometimes after rebooting there was not only backlight, but also thin, mostly white, horizontal lines, appearing in random places of the screen (appearing and disappearing after like 50-100 ms). It would stop only after a reboot, and happened every 5-10 reboots.
I've decided to let the battery die to see if it changes something, and as you may guess - it didn't. It died estimately after 2 or 3 hours. Now it's all the same, except for when I plug it to the charger, there's only a very low backlight (still no picture) and it's blinking... It also makes this continuous "electricity-related" (sorry, I don't know what's the word to call it ) sound. After I press the power on, or let it charge for 1-2 minutes it boots up, and there's just a semi-strong backlight, like earlier.
It's a refurbished 8gb n7, which I got 5 days ago from the polish Asus online store. Oh, and the speakers weren't 100% fine, if it changes something. They were fine at first, but after i plugged headphones in and out, they were making cracking sounds when the volume was over 50% or something like that. Is there any hope I can fix it myself?
edit: the android ver. is 4.2.2, not rooted
the device is getting warm on the left side when being charged, or just turned on...
Have you tried pulling the battery for a couple of minutes?

Nope, i don't want to mess with the hardware since i've bought it only few days ago... I'm afraid it may leave some traces of being opened, i'm not willing to take the risk.
You won't leave a trace pulling the battery. Just use a guitar pick or credit card and run it round, the back comes off very easily.

I've got this too! Pulling the battery does nothing. Last time it just fixed itself, now nothing.
Worried I'll have to take mine back.
How did that 'fixing itself' happened to you if i may ask? And how long did it last?
Your tablet has gone into sleep mode to protect the battery from further damage due to its low level of charge. What you're seeing is by design, as complete discharge of a lithium based battery is bad for it. You should never, ever, let it sit dead for a couple days. If you do discharge it to the point of shutdown again, immediately put some sort of charge on it, as waiting to long will cause the battery's protection circuit to fail completely. Best practice is to not let your device go to the point of shutdown, but rather to plug it in when not in use. Your battery will have a longer lifespan.
Plug your N7 into the charger and immediately press power and volume down to get into the bootloader. Once there, use the volume key to scroll to Power Off Device and then press the power button. After it powers off, unplug it and then plug it back in. It should then charge normally.

It suddenly rebooted and there was no more picture, just the backlight - and it lasted for like 2-3 hours (maybe even longer)! Can a completely discharged battery power the backlight for this long? After it turned off at last, i put it on charge and i've tried the power+volume method and it didn't do anything (btw. i already wrote about it)... then i let it charge for like 5-6 hours and it didn't change anything except for the fact, that the battery was evidently charged, because the backlight again lasted for few hours.

Actually, I was addressing the OP without realizing that this was a zombie thread.
To answer your question though... yes, when in sleep mode the battery can still turn on the backlight and keep it powered for some time due to the low power requirement of a black screen. Many users that have found themselves in sleep mode actually have their tablets enter into a prolonged cycle of bootloops. From the sounds of it, your device seems to have, for reasons unknown, put itself to sleep.
Anyway, I digress... I know you've stated you've tried various combinations of the power and volume keys. Have you attempted holding all three buttons for approximately 30-40 seconds while the tablet is plugged in? If it that will force it into the bootloader, you can follow the steps that I posted to get it up and running again. If not, then it seems your best available option is to seek an RMA from ASUS. Given your speaker issue, I'd send it back regardless- you shouldn't be expected to deal with battery and speaker issues after only five days.

So, I plugged my Nexus 4 into a generic car charger and it went black instantly. The battery was at about 92%. With the hope that a proper AC or computer USB charge connection would bring up the white battery icon and fix things, I stopped by an out of town T-mobile. The manager tried the button battery-reset (up volume + power for 60sec) and I googled alternatives and tried the - enter recovery by pressing those buttons for 15sec off the charger and connecting while still holding down the buttons - trick. Neither worked.
The manger seemed familiar with that and the other button pressing tricks, and said that really, my only real hope would be to reset/replace the battery, but that would void my warranty. However, although the T-mobile site claims my Google bought phone is under warranty (and I've been paying for it each month), technically, it isn't. Under them or Google (any more). So, I purchased the tools to open the phone, as well as a replacement battery. In the interim, I tried to use all the button combos and various charging connections to get it to come back to life. I *did* manage to get it charging the old battery. I know because the blinking red light turned constant for an hour or two, and the battery got warm. I can only guess that the battery was too damaged to keep the charge however, because I could never get it to turn on during or after. My best guess is that the software battery reset allowed the phone to send a charge to the battery - at least once.
After getting my tools and replacement battery, I managed to get the phone open (with great effort - I think there must be a difference between batches there). I removed the old battery connection and looked to see if I could get the charge icon with it unattached and on the charger. I couldn't. Reconnecting the old battery didn't seem to make any difference.
I was about to go through the process of prying up the old battery when I realized that you can actually connect the new battery to the board connector without getting the old one out. So I did that. Leaving it charging like that for awhile didn't do anything, so I decided to do another software battery reset and I'm letting it sit on the charger overnight. All of this has been without reattaching the back.
So my major question is - does anyone know for sure if the phone actually charges the battery with the back off? I know there are important circuits there - which seem to shut down the phone after the battery or google image when not detected (at least that's my deducement after reading posts). But are those connections also used in charging? The Qi goes though the back to the charger function, so perhaps that connection has to be there? I would like to try and find out though beforehand. It took 2 hours and two mangled guitar picks to get it open the first time, and the second may be just as trying. (And believe me, towards the end, I was not concerned with being gentle.)
I am also curious about the four prong battery connection. I've seen the post about charging the battery using external sources by connecting to the two outer pins. Does that mean the two inner pins constitute a second circuit between the charged battery and the phone? And if I find another 3.8v battery fully charged, I could perhaps connect that to the phone instead by wires and get it booted into recovery? As to why I'd want to do that, I don't recall the last dated CM version I had installed, so finding that in their folder plus pulling off everything from /data... assuming I replaced this with another Nexus 4, I might be able to save myself a lot of setup hassle.

I RAN INTO A SIMILAR PROBLEM
I found that holding the power button for a while allowed my nexus 4 running stock Lollipop 5.1 to boot back up.
Have considered that you may have a faulty USB port ?
Just pop the old battery out install the new one plug in the charger and it will charge. You can boot up without the back on. The back contains the antennia.... and the NFC circuit board.

Well, still no luck. I ended up putting the new battery in and closing it up to try the Qi charger, but all I can get is either 7 or 10 red blinks followed by a short solid light. No white battery charging symbol or anything else.
When you say a faulty USB port, what are you referring to? The cable works (though I've also tried my Nexus 7 one too) and even though it won't boot, my computer does recognize that something is there when I plug my phone into it (it just can't figure out what's plugged in - which is normal). I want to say that it's trying and failing to charge the new battery. At this point, I think the charger messed up more than just the battery.

My Nexus 7 (2012) turned off(not properly) when the battery level was low and won't power on. I tried a battery from a working tablet and tested my battery in another tablet. It seems like the issue is somewhere else.
These are the things I tried:
- leave it for a couple of hours charging (no battery sign at all)
- hold the power button with/without the volume levels while it being both connected and disconnected.
- tested my battery in another tabled and put a fully charged battery from another tablet
- made sure that the battery is connected
There was one more thing I tried - to press the Power button with no battery inside but the tablet being connected to a laptop via the USB cable. One could hear something like a boot noise coming from the tablet (doesn't happen when the battery is inside)
In December, 2015 I installed a Custom ROM with android 5.1.1 which I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/development/android-6-aosp-grouper-t3268172/ (the thread was renamed and is now about the Android 6 update) The tablet worked fine for these 3 months but one day when I was checking my email it went off and won't respond to any actions.
Could you please help me to fix it? I'm just not ready to give up on this tablet. Thanks!
Both you and i, same model, essentially, the same circumstances. I also tried every method you mentioned as well. Even down to the flashing of a rom. Same results. I even tried "jump starting" the battery. Not wanting to give up on it. It sits in my closet like that boy in A.I at the bottom of the ocean, waiting... I know that is not the reply or help you were looking for. Just so you know, you are not alone..

Well, that's a good start, at least I am not the only one!
Have you tried to connect your device via USB? My laptop can see a connected device but it can't recognize it and I hear some sounds coming from the tablet when I try to hold the `power` button. This made me think that it can be a display/screen related, so the device works but we can't see it due to the broken screen/display. Don't know how to check that though.
Same here, stock Nexus 7, won't turn on, just switched off one day and won't come back on, have tried everything as suggested above, can't get it to flicker, doesn't even register the power connection with a green light or anything

Try replacing the screen, just to check. If that doesn't fix it, at least you have a brand new screen!
I'm currently having the same issue, haven't used it in 6 months and when I tried to turn it on, nothing happens

I fix mine,
let it sit on the charger for a hour, then hold down the button for 20 sec
same issue here as well ive had it for about a year and im not able to access anything via my pc google help forums had no answer either, looks like we may be screwed..........

After that no response either from charger, holding power button for 60+ seconds didn't work either, tried re-connecting the battery, still with no signs.
And then, I tried to plug in the charger and then pressing VolumeDown+Power immediately after connecting the charger. Suddenly got some response, that battery charging icon appeared, and it shows my battery charging, but from 0%. Still waiting to charge a bit until I can try to boot it.
I'll update this post with any news.

After 15 minutes of charging I managed to boot my Nexus7 with 7% of charge in it a that moment, It seems to work for now.
Summarry of what I did to solve my problem:
1. Opened the back of the N7 (I used a guitar pick for this) and re-connect the battery.
2. Then plugged in the charger and at the same time pressed VolumeDown+Power, battery icon lit up but went out, repeated step 1, and then step 2 again gave me animated battery charging animation which showed up for like 10 seconds
3. Waited for 10-15 minutes and tried to boot normally. And it works now

Thanks mine was taking forever to charge so I unplugged the battery waited a few minutes and then it worked it charged faster

2. Then plugged in the charger and at the same time pressed VolumeDown+Power, battery icon lit up but went out, repeated step 1, and then step 2 again gave me animated battery charging animation which showed up for like 10 seconds
3. Waited for 10-15 minutes and tried to boot normally. And it works now

My Nexus 7 (2012) turned off(not properly) when the battery level was low and won't power on. I tried a battery from a working tablet and tested my battery in another tablet. It seems like the issue is somewhere else.
These are the things I tried:
- leave it for a couple of hours charging (no battery sign at all)
- hold the power button with/without the volume levels while it being both connected and disconnected.
- tested my battery in another tabled and put a fully charged battery from another tablet
- made sure that the battery is connected
There was one more thing I tried - to press the Power button with no battery inside but the tablet being connected to a laptop via the USB cable. One could hear something like a boot noise coming from the tablet (doesn't happen when the battery is inside)
In December, 2015 I installed a Custom ROM with android 5.1.1 which I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7/development/android-6-aosp-grouper-t3268172/ (the thread was renamed and is now about the Android 6 update) The tablet worked fine for these 3 months but one day when I was checking my email it went off and won't respond to any actions.
Could you please help me to fix it? I'm just not ready to give up on this tablet. Thanks!

I have done same, Mine is , My son had it and ran it to 0%, charging port was iffy, put new one charging port in this morning, nothing, not even battery DEAD sign, nothing tried power, button / volume trick , I did notice on the power/volume button, there is a 4th, anyone have a clue, cannot find what im looking for to answer that.
I have a smart young co-worker looking at it for me right now.

Honestly, I do not think it is the battery, I can see the Charge signal, and the Battery is showing 1,784 VDC tested unplugged and disconnected, my smart young co-worker seems to think POST is failing, I still never see a "Charging" indication.
Does anyone know , Is there a fail safe, say the battery is disconnected, and usb charger is plugged in, will i just see all 5VDC at the sub port, ?
I never see a screen flicker, DEAD battery sign, nothing.
co-worker, tried some things that made sense when he explained what he did, I would have to agree with him.
Now it is rooted, 4.x something I forget, Never went to 5.x did once early and did not like it, Back stock, ran 2 days no issues, Rooted again, 4.x still do not remember, worked great 3-4 months, Sons ran it to DEaD and that was it, put it up for 90 days or so, wife got new tablet, kids have Fire each, and here i am tabletless, CRAP, did not want to throw to much $$$$ at this thing, nor did I want to buy a new one.
Samsung Tablet here we come.
