Remapping MENU and RETURN touch buttons - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Hi,
My L720-S4 is experiencing a failure of the touch buttons (menu and return buttons next to the home button). I've researched and tried various programs, such as Virtual Button Bar and Button Savior. With these programs, the return function works well but the MENU button does not work.
I've done Xposed but that didn't have the options for the MENU button that I could find.
So after further research, I rooted the device to edit the /SYSTEM/USR/KEYLAYOUT/GENERIC.KL file to change the volume down button (114) to MENU. Unfortunately this also does not work.
Can I get some advice or suggestion as how I may go about reprogramming on of the keys to act as the MENU button ideally or have a menu button GUI overlay like the two software above? Device is currently on stock ROM @ 4.4.2.
Many thanks in advance for those that can help save this S4.
Cheers!

The Sprint S4 boot loader comes unlocked, and since youre already rooted, just flash a stock ROM or ODIN back to stock and re-root. All of this assuming you just want the buttons to work like stock.

It's probably me but what you suggest seems to be where I'm at right now. Flashing back to stock then re-rooting is the same as me rooting the stock ROM. If at all possible, I'm trying to map the volume down button with one press to work in place of the defective MENU button and a long hold of the volume down button will lower the volume.
Again, maybe I miss understood your suggestion so my apologies if that's the case and hope you'll explain in more detail.
Cheers!

Can't get to recovery image [Android with warning sign appears]

Hi everybody,
This is my first post here and I seriously hope someone can help me.
I unlocked my phone and was attempting to root it and flash Cyanogen's MOD. I flashed Armon_RA's recovery image into recovery partition using fastboot, but when I try to access it I'm getting an image of an android with a warning sign, which I can't post yet because I'm a newbie and mod's have to check my account... Once there the only thing I can do is remove the battery.
I've downloaded Armon_RA's img twice and from different sources and the same thing happens.
In terms of what I did, I tried to follow a step-by-step guide at androidandme.com, combined with Cyanogen's official Wiki.
I appreciate any kind of help,
Thanks!
BTW I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, in case it helps.
Took me like 4 times to flash the recovery before I got the care bear screen. Just keep flashing!
I just got it working right now and was about to post it had been fixed.
Thanks anyway!
Sorry for undigging this thread, but this thread is the first one which shows up when I searched for "android recovery warning".
I have spent the entire day trying to fix my Nexus One's recovery (I got stuck on the screen with a warning sign as well), with no success. Trust me, I tried (almost) everything possible to flash a new recovery/restore stock recovery.
What did work, though, was running fastboot flash recovery recovery.img 5 times in a row (remember to boot your phone in fastboot mode before sending these commands). That did the trick, and now I'm able to boot in recovery mode (Clockworkmod, by the way).
Thanks!
That warning ! IS the stock recovery.

This.
Some people seem to be confused about what the recovery looks like.

So how can I do a hard reset from this stock recovery when there's no menu commands, how do you use the stock recovery?
I have an unrooted S On nexus one that I need to hard reset because it boot loops for some reason, but didn't want to have to root it.

Push the power button and volume up buttons at the same time
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App
Two buttons together ...
It is a common misconception that you have to push two buttons at the same time to activate some features. Trying to push them at exactly the same time is hit and miss and causes people to have issues.
In every case the combination is always hold one button down and then click the other button once ... much easier than clicking both together.
In this case I believe the combo is hold down power and then click Volume-Up once. (I may have it reversed).

It most likely is reversed. At least when you want to access the bootloader you want to hold down the volume down button (or maybe it is either volume button) and then turn on the phone. And with fastboot, you hold down the trackball as you turn on the phone.
I believe the volume up and powerbutton at the same was to "ok" the phone to apply an update.zip that was stored on the card (I remember doing that when I was running the Froyo build leaks from google).

OzCDN is correct, it is: hold down the power button and press volume up (the reverse does not work), but pushing them both together still works

[Q] Alternate Clockwork Navigation Buttons

I"m sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, however I am having issues navigating Clockwork. My camera button has stopped working. The only way I can get into Clockwork recovery is through rom manager. The problem is I can not select a file to flash without using the camera button. Is there an alternative way to boot into recovery without having to hold the camera button ? Also is there another way to select a file to flash without using the camera button? Thanks !

Have you tried using the keyboard?
I have, when I press the enter or return key it displays "Return key Not Allowed".

What about the home key?
The Keyboard Home Key does nothing, Touch Screen Home Screen makes the screen go blank/black.
As far as I know koush didn't build it with any alternative buttons this would have to be taken up with koush to have fixed I would think.

You sure nothing got corrupted in your installation? what kernel are you using?
I'm pretty sure there isn't any corruption. There is a physical problem with the camera button. It is stuck and I tried to force it out but to no avail. I am using Baked Snack 1.6 w/ his ultimate kernel.

I understand but if something is failing and its a hardware issue...then taking it in is the best thing you can do as you don't know what else will start failing in the future...
I have used both the keyboard arrow keys with the Enter key and the volume rocker with Camera key. They both work fine.
you could also search for or ask if anyone still has cwm 2.5.0.9 or whatever the one previous to the final release was. that one worked just the same as far as function but the buttons was i think smiley to move up and down and "k" was select (camera button). you could just one click flash it from your pc, might hold you over til you can get the hw fixed. although, taking it in to sprint, wouldnt you be odin-ing back to stock anyway? they might ***** about your warranty if you're custom rom/kerneled.
ROM Manager Pro will let you have access to newer and older CWM's.

[Q] (SOLVED) Home and notification panel not working

I tried installing this mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2789666&page=97
But my phone got a bootloop, so i flashed the stock firmware 4.4.2 Gt-i9505 via odin and it worked..sort of.
Now the home button, notification center, the settings icon in the pulldown menu, the button next to it,my lockscreen and long pressing the wifi to the multiwindow button doesn't work. Power menu only contains reboot and power off, used to have airplane mode and volume buttons.
Menu, back, volume keys and power button are working. And home button wakes the screen if its of.
Please help :crying::crying::crying:
PS I don't like to do a full wipe
Also tried replacing framework-res.apk with another one, another bootloop, so reflashed the same rom again.
Do a full wipe
There is nothing like I dont want to

Back button softkey broken after Odin flash

Has this ever happened to anybody before?
I performed a clean flash of N900W8VLU2DOD1 through Odin (pulled battery, booted straight into Download mode).
The menu softkey works, but seems to register as hitting/long pressing the menu button, so S Finder opens.
The Back button does not respond to touch, but will light up when the Menu button is pressed.
All of my softkeys are working just fine when I am running a custom Touchwiz ROM, or Temasek's CM12.1...
Does anybody know how to fix this?!

Tab 4 SM T230NU Question

Hi to everyone, great forum love reading all the different Threads. I need some help trying to make a decision. I just recently bought a used rooted T230NU from a reseller that claimed that the Physical Home and Volume Buttons have been disabled by testers so they loaded an app or soft keys to give me use of those buttons. The unit is rooted I did check with root checker and Dom's Diagnostics, it currently has Super SU and Busy Box on it. The Volume up key was disabled physically because someone modified the toggle so it couldn't depress the switch which I have now resolved so toggle is good. When in diagnostics and checking keys I do get response from all buttons. Return registers as return, Volume up and Volume down register as up and down but the Recent key, Power button and Home all register as UNKNOWN thus they are all physically working. The unit also doesn't go into sleep mode after the allotted time it just shuts down if there is no interaction with the Tablet and the Power button does not bring it out, you have to hold power til it boots again. Hopefully this is enough info for my next question. I want to restore it back to the factory Rom because my wife is going to use it, will flashing it remap the keys to their original settings provided I can get it into Download mode for Odin or do you think my flashing it could potentially Brick the unit. Any advise would be grateful.
Thanks
John

Flashing the stock firmware with Odin should remap the keys to their original settings, although I can't guarantee it

Thanks ...took the plunge all is good, keys did re-map. Tablet is all up to date via Kies after the Odin unroot.
