I am currently a G1 owner on the fence about rooting my phone, as are many others. One of the first issues I've come across is being overwhelmed by forum threads. Unless I have missed something (and if I did, please point me in the right direction!), everything is posted in forums here, requiring people to pour through tons of posts and pick through the right information.
Is there an official wiki or something where all the latest news, guides, FAQs, etc. are being updated? If not, I'd love to start one, but unfortunately I don't have the knowledge to do so (yet, at least). I'm thinking of a super simple, jargon-free site for users to find answers to their questions, and a simple outlined "official" process for how to begin and where to go from there.
For example, some FAQs..
Can T-Mobile/Google "cut me off" in any way if they determine I have rooted my phone?
If I change my mind later, can I go back to original firmware and leave no trace that I ever rooted the phone in the first place? Future over-the-air updates will install with no issues?
Let's say I mess up during the rooting process. Is there always a way out, or am I screwed?
How safe is storing apps on the SD card? What can happen to my phone, and how do I avoid problems?
What are the JFvX.XX firmware releases? How do they work? Are they required? Are there other alternatives?
What if a future OTA can't be hacked, will we miss out on features?
I've seen various different methods of rooting the G1, which one is the most popular and why?
etc.
This is just an idea, but there's all these questions like this that I know many people have. While these questions can easily be answered in forums, I'm looking for a more convenient solution for the community. As official answers are nailed down, it would be great to have a reference to check with rather than flooding forums with questions.
Anyway, thanks for all the hard work from the developers here. It's really exciting to follow, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for the G1!

Thanks for the link, but unfortunately this doesn't seem user friendly (it's filled with unexplained links and jargon), and seems pretty outdated. I'm thinking about info aimed the average n00b end-user here, not developers or people actively following the forums and progress made.
I'm not sure if you understand fully what you're asking. Keeping your phone updated without "actively following the forums and progress made" is a simple task right now, just wait until Google pushes an update for you. If using the search function is too hard for you, I think root access is biting off more than you can chew. All of your FAQ's can easily be found in the development section of the forums. As far as step by step guides are concerned, read the stickies, use the search function, and then ask. It's not complicated at all.

1) as far as i'm aware no. They can remove apps from peoples phones (allegedly) but i can't see how they would know you have root, or even care. It's good publicity for the phone if anything.
2) Yup, you can easily un-root your phone and the updates should work correctly.
3) Once you have the hardSPL bootloader loaded it's pretty much impossible to brick your phone, see this thread for details.
4) Not sure about this, so i can't comment
5) the JF firmware releases are essentially hacked firmwares, created by JesusFreke, that allow us to get root access (among other things ). they are incredibly easy to install and they are required for certain things such as, multi-touch. as far as i know, there are no alternatives.
6) They will be as everything is open source. I imagine xda will have a firmware hacked within hours of it's release
7) personally, i find this way the best. nice n simple and easy to follow.

I am perfectly capable of handling root access. I am a Linux system administrator (among other things) by profession. I admit, this would be my first attempt at "hacking" a device and thus voiding the warranty, hence my hesitation and "noob" questions. Using the search function is not my concern here, but I can appreciate where you're coming from.
What I'm talking about, and what appears to be misinterpreted, is an information source for common end users, not developers or tech-savy users. If I have questions about rooting the G1, certainly those less technically inclined do as well. And unfortunately for them, they don't necessarily even know where to begin looking. I'm talking about people like my brother in law, for example... who probably never used a forum in his life, but wants to have multi-touch on his phone, or change his themes, or find a solution to his constant "low storage" warnings. People like him don't care about hacking into the phone and getting all this flexible access for himself. They just want to take advantage of what's already been achieved, but unfortunately require root to do so.
I agree that it is pretty simple to root the phone, but face it you have to be somewhat comfortable with technology first, even just to obtain the information.
Perhaps now isn't the appropriate time to wrap things up in a bow and give to the general G1 user base in a tidy little easy-to-digest package. As things develop further it may just naturally come about, perhaps via installers or something. I just think it would be helpful to many to have a source written for the common folk with jargon-free information... considering the more people get their hands on it, the more successful the platform can become.
And to Metlus, thanks for being receptive and answering my questions kindly without making me feel judged for asking what I assume many think is a "just search for it" type of post.

Great post meltus!
If and when you do decide to root g1 take your time and breathe, really isn't too hard just nerve racking the first time. I did it and im not a pro at all so you will probably breeze through it! The advancements made so far are unreal, auto browser, themes and many more make rooting well worth it in my opinion
I'm not sure if it gets any easier than this, but gizmodo today posted what looks like the easiest "recipe" yet for rooting the G1:
How To: Hack Android For Multitouch Web Browsing on the T-Mobile G1
There's so many different ROM's and Kernels and whatnot I'm lost.
I have an untouched 4.4.2 SM-N9005 and I want to get a Note 5 ROM or something new and flashy.
I want to keep the stylus functionality and a new camera would be neat too.
Could someone give me a quick rundown of what I need to do? (Root method? Bootloaders? Kernels? Which ROM? Patches? Xposed?)
Sorry, I'm so lost.
PS. I don't care about knox.
Would be better if you ask, if somebody can come to your place and flash your phone for you.
What you're asking for, is really the minimum basic knowledge you should have to flash your device.
And if you didn't get it from the numerous explanations and tutorials on the Web, will you get it now ?
I'm sure, someone will spoon feed you with the information, but will you then manage not to brick your device ?
You have some serious reading to do to catch up.
Good luck.
Actually as you can see I've been a member here for many many years and have rooted many phones and mod all kinds of electronics as well as many many other things.
It's not a matter of not knowing or bothering to do the research it's simply a matter of not having time at the moment. I have so many other things taking up my time I just thought someone could save me and anyone else who has been waiting for a good rom some time with a brief rundown on what they've found is best.
I'd love to try out all the different recoveries, roms, kernels et all but like I said, no time.
Android Development Darklord port .
Sorry no time for further .
Thank you that's the one I'd been watching but it's been on 2.1 for a fair while, perhaps with camera issues (op says so but people in the 1000+ page thread seem to say it's fixed? ) and every second post seems to mention some new fix or kernel required. Also I noticed there are some other note 5 ports now.
I've rooted every phone I've owned and was expecting to do the same with my new s7 Edge (Snapdragon on android 6.0.1). After much google searching/reading I want to confirm that not only is there no root but there likely will be no root because of a locked bootloader?
Are you able to root the S7? I may switch to that if so.

Here's a link for you to go explore the xposed forums that you failed to read.
Xposed has been around quite a bit longer than the S7. And simply because you are "in disbelief" or "denial", doesn't change the ability to read all the threads for xposed, and all that has been posted quite a bit before the s7 was mentioned.
ENOUGH! Unless you want this thread moved to the Asperger's section you guys are way off topic.
OP, you have your answer. There is no ETA for root. There probably won't be root at all.
My opinion which was inspired by my own perspective is that if you were able to find the forum, you could have taken at least FIVE minutes to read on the progress of root. It seriously would have taken less time to search than to start a new thread. Most of us on here are hoping, wishing, begging and even praying for root access. We've been following the results closely and some of us are even risking our own devices out of desperation to acquire to what has only have been complete failure so far. So with that being said, we're all a bit edgy. So on behalf of the forum, please just accept this as our excuse and most formal apology for any "rudeness" or "inconsiderate" responses to your inquiry. For future reference, all XDA members are encouraged to search prior to starting a new thread for the very reason of avoiding situations such as this. You've been a member for five years and so far have had 50 posts, 10 threads and two of those (threads) are the EXACT same.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/external-usb-keyboard-mouse-htc-10-t3406812 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/external-usb-keyboard-mouse-htc-10-t3406655 posted about five hours apart. (How do you even do that?)
So in conclusion, it's unfair to be defensive when in all honesty all of this could easily be avoided by using the forum for it's very purpose which is to gather and share information to each other, not to have everyone research for you.
Sorry if this was long winded, but I felt that it was necessary to say.

To answer your question I had no idea I double posted that thread, I don't even know how it happened lol
I actually did a lot of searching on this forum before posting, honestly there's just no obvious post title's that talk about root for the s7 edge snapdragon. Go check it out, search "root access", "root", "s7 edge root" on these forums and see what you come up with, the thread titles definitely do not indicate that root is discussed within them (for snapdragon).

If there was root then there would be a "HOW TO ROOT" guide. It's how it's always been. But stating that you searched and somehow didn't pick up the obvious that it isn't possible (yet) is only going to get you flamed. Members only assume that you're either trolling or at the very best too lazy to search it out. There are several threads and comments regarding lack of root. There are petitions and bounties for it as well. So you still defend that with all of your searching you didn't see ANY of that? That's what most of us find hard to believe.

Your post really drives my point home.
I was looking/searching for s7 edge root information. The only logical place for me to search these forums is in the "s7 edge" forums. Many of the links you gave below are in the S7 forum; why would someone search in the s7 forum for information on the s7 edge? They wouldn't...But here's the actual issue, the rest of the links you gave either do not show up when you search the forum for "root" or they are buried so far into the search it's not practical to find it. Again, try it yourself. go to the S7 edge page here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge
and do a search for "root" and see what you get. Can you honestly not see how these search results do not lead to a definitive answer? To prove my point even more, I actually typed in one of the titles you gave below, "Root and unlocked bootloader update" into the search box and it didn't even bring that thread up after searching the title directly. Maybe the search is broken. Try it yourself, it doesn't work.

You're just making excuses. You failed to search and read. We're not going to open more threads discussing how rooting is NOT possible when it should be clear for anyone with common sense would see that if it WAS possible, there would be guides to do it. You don't need to post a thread asking for something that doesn't exist when it clearly isn't otherwise there would be guides, roms, kernels, recoveries, themes, mods, etc. You don't see any of that because they don't exist. They don't exist because there's NOTHING TO GIVE! Not sure why the concept is so difficult to grasp though. The S7 and S7 Edge (Qualcomm) is almost identical with the exception of the screen. Neither of which has root.
But I gave your search a try. Under S7 Edge forum. I searched for "Qualcomm root" and resulted in:

lol, seriously man. You really think someone who just bought an s7 edge looking to root would know to search for the term "Qualcomm"? That's the first I have ever heard that term, I searched "root" and even knew to search "snapdragon". The search you used is only obvious after you know more than the average person about the s7 Edge.
But anyway let me make sure I have everything straight now:
Searching "root" in the S7 Edge forums may not yield the results you are looking for because the S7 Edge is also known as the Snapdragon and may at times also be referred to as the Qualcomm or Qualcomm S7 Edge but can be more commonly referred to as MODEL TYPE: SM-G935P however depending on the locale of purchase it will be referred to as the Exynos which is the international version MODEL TYPE: (SM-G935T) of the snapdragon QUALCOMM s7 "edge" SM-G935P and contains a Samsung processor instead of the Snapragon but may be confused with the identical model (except for the screen) which is the s7 and also has a counterpart in Europe and like it's edge sister model has a locked boot-loader which prevents it from gaining root access unlike the overseas version which is currently unlocked and is able to be rooted so when you see threads talking about the SM-G935T Exynos root then you should know that it's not necessarily referring to the version of phone you have although it may be if you purchased it online through a third party with an unlocked sim card.
It's all very obvious to anyone with common sense.

Yet you still made this thread. For what purpose though? Did you expect your thread to remind us, "Oh! That's what we're missing! Let's create a 'How to root' thread so that people can figure out how to root it because we all know how incapable the forum is without a guide."
For one thing, the forum is very capable. This is how we acquire root access in the first place. Smart ones acquire root and make a guide for the rest of us (dumb ones) so that we can have root as well. If the "smart ones" haven't created a guide for us "dumb ones" (ie the rest of us) then clearly it's not available. But like you said, you're in denial. So in your eyes, we should definitely have root but for some reason it's not being shared with the rest of us. So what do YOU do to fix it? Post a thread to remind everyone that there isn't a root guide. That. That right there is what perplexes me and I'm 100% certain that I'm not alone. Now I'm not trying to be rude but please search, research and read prior to starting a thread. ONLY create a thread if after a LOT of searching and posting in relevant threads you still come up empty. You've created 10 threads with 50 posts. Two of which are duplicate somehow. No including the threads started or your defensive responses here, that's 40 posts. That's a 20% "I can't find it so I'll ask the forum to give it to me instead of searching more" ratio. I'm a retired forum moderator, former developer, regular contributor and I only have 51 threads to my 5,600 post count. since 2009. That's a 1% "Let me start a thread for this" ratio for a moderator / developer. On average, that's 5 threads a year as a moderator / developer. See where I'm going with this? There is almost nothing new that hasn't been mentioned or discussed somewhere within this forum. You just need to take the time to find it instead of just jumping to start a new thread. This is actually a forum rule. Number #1 to be exact. I'll post the link just in case you can't find it either.

So with that being said, please take time to search and read prior to posting new threads.
Again, I'm not trying to be disrespectful. Simply acknowledge that you should spend more time searching, reading, researching and participating in other threads prior to creating new ones. We're trying to reduce clutter and needless threads such as this. Moderators are constantly trying to clean and close them when they should be focusing on more important issues within the forum. We're all doing our part to help out in this forum but while I've spent at least a collective helping you for something that you really could have done for yourself, I could have been focusing on more important issues. I simply could not go without trying to give you sound advice before getting majority of the forum upset at you. Which WILL happen if you're not careful.
Best wishes and good luck. I'll be reporting this thread for closing if that's okay?

I've rooted every phone I've owned and was expecting to do the same with my new s7 Edge (Snapdragon on android 6.0.1). After much google searching/reading I want to confirm that not only is there no root but there likely will be no root because of a locked bootloader?

TL;DR confirmed.
THREAD CLOSED as it's run off course and become pointless.
@OP, don't start another one like it. Feel free to read up on the currently open threads if you still have questions.
Picked up the S7 Edge from TMO after sadly surrendering my Note7. Wondering if there are Roms and a root method. I've searched the threads and don't see much. Any help is appreciated!!
TMO S7 Edge Root/Roms?

MOD EDIT:
Questions belong in the Help section, not How-To. I've moved your thread there.
Rooting Procedure

Roms
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-s7-edge/development
literally on the page i found by googling "tmobile s7 edge xda", i found a guide for rooting, along with two rom threads. and that's without even searching.
Root removes samsungpay permanently and is a bad battery drain last o checked
and also causes the phone to overheat and consistently lag/stutter even after changing kernel peramseters. root is just not worth it on the s7 edge. we need aosp/cm on this thing.
Thx for all the input guys. Much appreciated

Wasn't asking for a root method just Roms. I've been away from root for about 1.5 years when I moved form my G3 to a Note 5 so it's been a while. Had to surrender my Note7 so I was looking around and didn't see much for the edge device and especially the snapdragon model. After some looking I'm seeing more posted in the S7 section but thanks for saying so.
I'm in the same boat, waiting to receive a S7 Edge. I can't believe the state of root with this phone, I mean the Note 7 has root and it doesn't really lag , stutter or effect battery. (it can blow up though!)
Anyone try the 2 roms? Do they help bring it back to normal?

actually, it says in your topic name and first post that you are looking for a root method and roms. both of which are found on the phone's XDA page without searching. also, you keep saying you were "looking around" and didn't find anything but literally all the information you need is in the guides section, which is where you should always start when you have extremely basic questions like this.

Always someone lurking in the rafters waiting for the highlight of their day, which seems to be repetitive condescension disguised in the form of a response to a question, whether it's been asked and answered already or simply something they've decided is beneath them to read or simply just pass over (and yet not so much so that they can't pop in to dispense that oh so productive and about as necessary as the offending inquiry itself complimentary condescension) Not passing judgment on said question itself, since it doesn't bother me either way. XDA has been a complete congestion zone of information for several years now and I've seen bigger offenses handled with much more patience and maturity than this one (by those who were posting in threads for cheaper phones in need of much more help than this one js). Instead of repeating your amazing accomplishments in the area of Googling (which is always my first stop, unfortunately my next is almost always XDA where the Mods are Gods and everyone thinks they're too cool to pass along some of that precious wisdom they were clearly so preoccupied with acquiring they didn't have time to brush up on some proper grammar. Or punctuation. Maybe even a quick refresher course on basic manners, a better attitude and some other fundamental social etiquette) :fingers-crossed: ok, ok, ok for the sake of not appearing to be "bullying" or "targeting" anyone in particular...and because this unnecessary rant just ate up my Red Bull and cigarette break time, the time for my digression has arrived  Yfw kiddies. Now play nice or I'll come back and taunt you a second time. Because your father was a hamster and your mother smelt of elderberries NOW HUG EACH OTHER!

Lol I agree with you... I think people get tired of answering the same questions though. Especially when the answer is like 2 posts down lol.
Tmo S7 Edge
Hi there. I have 4 Tmo S7 Edge running ECHO Universal G935 Rom. First download the QUALCOMM SNAPDRAGON FILES From MAX on HIGHONANDROID for US SM-G930 and G935. Big thanks to MAX and the DEVELOPERS out there who create these things. Create a folder on your computer for all the files you'll need. Download the flashfire APK file, then ECHO Universal Rom from Verizon S7 Edge Forum. Put on your phone SD card. Watch MAX video if you don't understand, flash the modify tar file, then run superSU, then install flashfire apk. I do this process under 2 minutes, I tried different Roms from Verizon, Sprint and ATT root and unroot many times. Once you get a hang of the process it will come like brushing your tooth and putting on your jacket at the same time. Good ? luck Buddy

Anyway to get Grace UX apps from the Note 7 on S7E without root?
It's been a long journey trying to find how to Root the Verizon S7 Edge, I'm seeing so many methods and so many problems. Can somebody please give me an updated and working Root?
search works wonders.
use it

I'm new to the Verizon S7 Edge Stuff. I did search and yes, I saw threads about rooting but I'm asking which one is recommended and I should use. Most of the root threads are old threads with replies.
What... do you think anyone else here has hidden threads or methods they are using?
really?
if you searched... you would find what you are looking for.
OP, this is the method that most of us use for rooting this phone and it works fine:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-s7-edge/how-to/root-method-nougat-t3566978
All I can say is that I have software update (QK2) from Big Red (Verizon) and the root works fine for my needs. The phone will be sluggish at first but with some tweaks it should run fine. Keep in mind that each phone is different, each user has a different mentality and different equipment, and in the end what works for some or most just might not work with others or a few. It is a curse we bear with these phones.
While I agree that a "search" will yield tons of useful information, unfortunately, combing through tens and hundreds of pages of useless opinionated replies and hand holding posts can be quite tedious and often detracts from the useful information one seeks.
Hope some of this helps.
