___ BATTERY LIFE THREAD ___ Being raped by Android OS! - Shield Tablet General

Who is having issues with battery here? Android OS is killing my juice! I have gotten fed up and rooted my sheild and frozen most everything possible to try and get the OS down. I will lose like 30-40% overnight. I was thinking it was the shield or nvidia services tied into the android OS but that doesn't seem to be it. Blake_wavelock seems to have a lot of the activity and deep sleep isn't Happing as it should. I haven't tried WiFi off when screen is off and I'm going to use that tonight. I have all the location setting and Google setting inactive. I'm using optimized for battery.
Let me know what you think. I come from a posse of Samsung devices and get great battery life on them.(of course they are all rooted and ROM)

Have not seen that. Do you have a shield controller connected? I believe that blake is related to the controller.

I don't. I actually have frozen most all the gaming processes. So far looks like it doesn't like the WiFi and having WiFi off when screen is off seems to be working. I'm going to keep tracking the battery cycle and see. Will repot back. Thanks for chiming in!

I am running stock Android OS and I can run a full day on it with a single charge. Though I don't use the internet on it much and other services other than texting and calling. I lose about 10-20% over night.

Have you checked under WiFi advanced settings for keeping WiFi off while screen off and WiFi optimization? (Sorry if these settings aren't there, looking at settings on my phone, as I don't have this tablet, but I am considering purchasing one).
Also, is your WiFi signal poor or strong? Because that plays a big role.

I have this happening with airplane mode on. Only seems to happen when I'm home though.
Weird.

Check out today. But haven't been wondering around apps and such. Lol
Yesterday all was well til I messed around on chrome and a few other apps before bed. I was pretty sure I had skinned the cat until I woke up with 2% battery life and it was 35% before bed.:banghead:

Those with bad battery life should check what apps they have installed and use wakelock to find out what's keeping your tab awake over night. I have had many android devices and unusual battery life like many of you report is virtually always due to a user installed app or combo of apps. I get 3 days use on one charge MINIMUM. This is with WiFi on 24/7, and I use it for homework for several hours a day and some light gaming thru console mode (maybe an hour a day). I use a custom power mode with 50% cpu clock, 2 cores and 30 fps. I never take it off this power mode cuz I never see any difference in performance. Il post pics from next cycle.

Yea I'm not seeing bad standby either, battery overall isn't great but OK. I get about 5 hours screen on but most of my usage is android games.

Twice now, I have gone from 70-80% to dead in just a few hours with the screen off. I have a few background apps with push notification (facebook, appy geek, mighty text) but they are all the same apps as on my oneplus one, and it only drains 1-2% per hour. Same with my Xperia Z Ultra (which I had set up as a tablet, no sim installed)

I have the tegra note 7 and this shield. I pretty much just got both about a month ago. I have figured out that the WiFi hardware is not as good as most phones. So it will cause a wavelock and drain the device (which is labeled under android OS). So make sure under settings<wifi<advanced you choose WiFi off when screen is off or only when plugged and not to search for WiFi networks if you don't need. I have also seen that if you root then you can use titanium backup or whatever you like to freeze all the apps that cause harm or excessive battery drain. Also, with root you can use app called wavelock detector to figure out what app is draining you down. I have just about everything frozen except for updates and a couple other services. Good luck report back on what's causing it if you can. Blakewavelock got me, lol.
Here is this cycle from yesterday (still going) What wavelock detector looks like

tried airplane mode , didnt help.

[Q] Disappointing Battery Life

I got a Nexus 4 yesterday, and so far it has been excellent. Really fast and has all the features I want. The battery life is pretty poor though. I am at 28% with a screen on time of only about 2 hours. The total time is about 8 hours. I haven't been using it a lot. The main thing consuming battery seems to be Nova Launcher for some reason. I have it on my Nexus 7 and it doesn't decrease battery life at all, but it seems to use a lot more on here. It was at 24% according to GSam Battery Monitor.
I just followed a bunch of instructions for increasing battery life from various websites so I will see how it goes. I now have all the Google syncing disabled, location services off and brightness on auto.
Is there anything I should be doing? Why is Nova Launcher's usage so high?
Thanks,
EDIT: Could it be the widgets I am using? I have two Gmail inbox widgets, the messaging widget and the circle battery widget.
Same here though I'm not sure its nova, my battery got as bad as yours when i rooted to stock.

it could, or any other apps you have working in the background. it can also be how you use the device. but before you assume anything about your battery life, give it 3-4 battery cycles before it normalizes.

Alright. I have minor OCD kind of thing so I always close the active apps through the task manager as soon as I exit them. I'll give it a few more days and then pursue the issue further.

im ocd about that too, lol. the back button to kill is one of my favorite custom rom features. also, autostarts and greenify are both great apps to make sure that you have mich less ctap opening in the background. anyways, im a heavy user normally, battery life on the nexus 4 id never call bad. usually i get 3.5-5.5 hours screen on time, depending on use. but then again, i use a custom kernel thats optimized for performance and battery. but, stock rom/kernel isnt bad on battery.
I too Force Close all the social networking apps before sleeping and turn wifi off. And i daily get around 4 hrs of OST. Will attach pics later to show. So to get 4 hrs OST you need really need to have a custom kernel. Just optimize your usage and you are fine with the stock kernel.
Phone is totally stock. Not rooted. And i got 6 pages on Apps installed.
I even used to clear RAM every now and then but I just stopped doing it as I couldn't find it doing anything better.
The battery life is much better now. Yesterday when I got back from school it was at 40% or so, and today it was at 68%.
Gets better after a few battery cycles. My battery life was average, so I rooted and with matr1x kernel it's snappier and better battery.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
i'm stock and my battery life was shockingly bad on the default settings until yesterday when i tried some fixes and they have made things much better.
looking at my N4 right now, i'm still on 58% after 22 hours. that's after several voice calls, some browsing & reading emails, GPS navigation using Maps, a couple of skype video calls, wake-up alarms etc.
basic fixes as follows:
- screen brightness right down to maybe 10-15%
- data off when not being used, ditto location services
- NFC and BT off.
- i've left wifi on as it doesn't seem to take much battery if it's not being used.
that's all! after charging last night, i woke after 6 hours or so and was amazed to see it had dropped only 1-2%, so apparently nothing is waking it from sleep.
One thing that really improved my battery life (when I had a Nexus 4) and something I tell to anybody with poor battery life, is to go into maps, go to settings, location settings, and uncheck "report from this device". If you've got the app "wakelock detector" just watch the wakelocks from maps almost entirely disappear. It nearly doubled my battery life at the time.

Hey thx man that didn't work but it did start me down the path to fix my problem.
I found out it had something to do with my GPS options its in settings and location access WiFi and GPS location options i checked it off and now i am getting 1 hour screen on time for every %10 if you do the math i have about 8hours of screen on time! I also have setcpu app which is giving me about 48hours of standby time, i will upload some screens after a bit more testing.

My battery life is brill and i never turn owt off or force anything to close, it is only bad when i play a 3d game or something but what do you expect. over night it only drops about 1% every 4 hours which is a bit bonkers.
(screen on auto, fully stock with Nova and not rooted)

still haven't charged my N4 since my last post on this thread.

If you would like to risk such things as unlocking bootloader, rooting, installing custom ROM and kernel, then it'd be easier for you.
Personally, I've found codefireX ROM and faux123 kernel to be battery friendly and very responsive, but of course you've got to be a bit fixed on such things as playing with your devices and getting fun from it to do that

after 20m browsing/ emails this morning and a couple of calls, i'm down to:

HTC One 4.2.2 Update UK

I just updated my HTC One yesterday and the battery drain is ridiculous. I took my phone off the charger at 6am today and watched some of a film listened to a bit of music and sent texts as usual and phone went dead at 2pm !
Usually it would last till 6pm with heavy usage but since the update the battery life has deteriorated.
My phone is less than a week old and overall really impressed with it till now.
Anyone else having this issue and can suggest a fix?

You may need to give it a few days and a couple of battery cycles to settle itself down again. Try installing Greenify to 'hibernate' running services in the background and BetterBatteryStats to monitor kernel wakelocks and what's using your battery in general..

For me the 4.2.2 update has improved my battery life.
Everything completely stock, get about 35-40 hours battery life (100% to ~1%) with 2 to 4 hours on screen time. Obviously depending on what you do with that screen on, will dictate just how much battery life you use. But for me, usually browsing, reading, watching YouTube. Dont really game or do anything massively intensive.
Also everything on stock normal, (locations, gps, auto sync, blinkfeed, etc).
As I said depending on what you do with your phone, your battery life with on screen time will increase/decrease. Also whether you use it as a smartphone (all sync etc on) or reduce it to a phone (2g, power saver, screen dimmed, etc) makes a huge difference.

I'm working in dark rooms so why keeping display brightness not at minimum? And on most places I only got 2G network, so why not forcing the phone to only use this?
And sync... Yeah... I don't need the weather to be updated every hour... Or news... They're appearing on my BlinkFeed anyways...
And I'm using my phone as a smartphone as well Over 6 hours screen on time is mostly Facebook, WhatsApp and browsing.

I though we moved on from doing all this crap.
Why can't android manage battery like windows does or even better htc work with Google and sort the issue.

100% agree with you..now the phone charges quicker but it discharges quicker too.. yes i did hard reset, autosync etc etc.. no change of my usage patterns, i now get half the usage..
dont know why htc just didnt go straight to 4.3 as this significantly improves battery life..4.2 acrosss the board was a bad update.
Anyone tried the Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru app?

Note 12.2 Battery Life

Hi,
Now that the Note Pro 12.2 has been out for a while now, what kind of battery life are you getting?
How much Stand By and On-Screen Time are you getting?
charge time
I would also appreciate if people can share how long it's taking to charge from 0-100%. Thanks.
I used mine quite heavily on Friday night and Saturday. Probably 8 hours in total. I still had 65% battery left. I did root and removed a lot of bloatware.
From my usage so far, looks to be about 6-8hrs screen on time.
This isn't very specific I realize but battery life seems considerably better than my old nexus 10 and recharging is also much faster.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 3 using Tapatalk
What about charging it?
It is time for my old original LTE tab to go.I want an LTE, but like my old tab, Verizon is picking it up, and development on the verizon version might be sparse. My factory Tab, will only charge with a certain voltage. The Devs wrote a script to override that on it.
Does it charge in the car? If so, what amp is it? Do you have to have special charger or will it work on one of the 2 amp chargers, say for an Iphone? Have you tried it?
Thanks
standby is fantastic; as is video watching (dont' have exact total time but I think 3 hours of video watching used approx 30% battery).
-
however this game I was playing, symphony of eternity, really kills the battery. 2 hours used approx 45% (wish I had exact figures). Mind you the game has gotten old but I want to finish it (I play a few hours on trips - so started it approx 1.5 years ago; but finally near the end).

I have the sm-p905 LTE version and i’m very impressed with the battery life so far.
on time screen that the tablet actually was on is right now 9h59m and battery still on 20%
watched in the 10 hours about 4h15m video's
transferred about 6 gb files with wifi direct
transferred about 19 gb files from my portable hd to the tablet with usb 3.0
then browsing, facebook, chat, ....
i must say all the apps i don’t use i have turned out permently.
4G was always turned on during the session, total time off the ac now is 1 day an 1h
my device isn’t rooted.
when the battery is completely empty, i’ll charge it and let you know how long it takes. First time i charge it .
I'm also very impressed with my Note 12.2 battery... I would say it can do 1 hour screen time per 10% of battery. I replace my third generation Ipad with this tablet... I the only thing iPad is better right now is battery life on stanby... Apple has done an excellent job on this side because it's way better on the iPad, even if I keep the sync on all the time for emails, contacts, calendar and other apps.
On the Notepro 12.2, if I keep the wifi off while on stanby, it's good (not excellent)... but if I keep it on all the time, I have to charge my tablet every 2 days. While it's off, I can get 3-4 easily when my regular weekday usage.
I've watched a complete film of 2 hours film on my tablet a few days ago... streamed from my Plex server to the Android Plex app on the tablet... and I lost around 20% of battery only... which is excellent.
By the way, I have the wifi only version (Exynos CPU).

That's a bit odd. I am not using mine much at all at the moment, maybe half an hour a day and it's now on day 8 and still 30% left. My Wi-Fi is off when in sleep and I don't turn it off when not using it.

Hi. Sorry only just got this. Annoyingly I put it on charge overnight as I'm back to work today. Battery stats have reset. No idea what the screen time was.

The battery is good, if I dont use it, I just turn off to save battery. Otherwise i need to charge everyday (wifi on, sync, games, web, no sleep mode), now I can use few days in a row on single charge, depends on what I'm doing on it. This is not a smartphone/cellphone, so he dont need to be everytime on

Battery Woes - Help and ideas welcomed!!!

So I have had my S5 for a week now and my batt life is aweful. Yet I hear everyone saying its awesome...
Here is my setup. Nova Launcher, Wifi always on, but disable scanning and set it to only keep on while sleep if plugged in. Bluetooth always on, I use it 3 hours a day. So need it....
GPS always on, High accuracy...
Brightness in the middle and set to auto.

There's something wrong with the camera on these phones. After I open up the camera or snapchat, my battery drains fast. The phone doesn't go into deep sleep after closing camera apps. I restart my phone multiple times per day, but my battery drains at 2-4%/hrs with a couple hours screen on per day.

Last 100-8% took 40 hours with almost 5 hours screen time. Neither power save modes were on. I had WiFi 70% of the time, with a decent 4G signal otherwise. This is 2-3 times what I get if I use my camera without restarting my phone.

I have a similar set up as you. I keep BT always on and GPS always on w/ high accuracy, turning BT off doesn't do much to the battery life imo.
The absolutely biggest difference for me was to go into location settings and hit Google Location Reporting and turn off location reporting and history. Also turn off geo-tag for the camera, and locations setting on FB.

Maybe I am nuts... But does the charging cable matter... I'm not using the OEM one, never bother to take it out of the box... Using a basic microusb cable from my previous phone that was already there. Maybe that sounds crazy...

It shouldn't matter. For what its worth, I'm not seeing anywhere close to what others have posted in terms of battery longevity. I use bluetooth for everything. Car stereo, bathroom speaker, gym headphones, etc. Wifi is always on, but connected 80% of the time. GPS rarely on. Screen time doesn't push past 2 hours and I can BARELY get about 1 day of battery life. I do use the stock charging cable, but I use others as well.
It seems like a big variance, even with drastic use differences.

Battery life is ok for me I guess. It gets me through a day. I am not impressed by the battery life at all, probably because I was spoiled with my old MAXX. I still expected at least a few more hours but something in the background sucks battery. When root comes, I'm sure battery life will improve a bunch. Its also not that big of a deal because the back is removable. What stinks is this is my battery life with power saving enabled for over 1/2 of the day. I really do not understand how people were getting over 10 hours of screen time and this day and a half battery life. The only way I get that is if I charge it before bed and count those 12 hours towards my battery life and I still wouldn't break 24 hours.
Maybe I'm missing something?
GPS is battery saving, print services are disabled, screen timeout at 15 seconds, screen is at auto brightness with adapt display, power saving enabled most of the time, wifi and 4g bounce between whichever is better, network mode is LTE/CDMA and I have disabled a ton of bloat. Maybe its because I have ART enabled.
Definitely not impressed by battery life but I am a heavy user and I love that you can swap batteries.
What does 'power saving mode' do? I can clearly see what 'ultra power saving mode does', but I was wondering if anyone knew what regular power saving mode does? I tried searching the Q&A forum but didn't find much and Googling it just led me to a bunch of pages touting the ultra power saving mode. Thanks in advance!

What's wrong with my note 4 ?

Hi everyone,
I have a Note 4 (SM-N910F) running android 5.1.1 (build LMY47X.N910FXXU1COH4) for about 1 year and a half now and i'm so surprised of how the performance have decreased, plus i have some weird things happening every now and then such as :

Having no internet connection, but i'm on wi-fi. This doesn't come from the network i'm using because it happens even when i'm connected to a different one.
My battery life is really ****ty... Plus when i'm around 30%, my phone shuts down and when i turn it back on again, i'm like at 1%.
I'm not root.
I really don't know what to do. Is there any information i can give you that will give you tips on things i'm maybe doing wrong causing my phone to have weird behavior ?
The thing i want to know is if flashing a new rom was a good idea, and maybe if you have advices to give me on roms.. I'd like to be as up to date as possible, and a light rom. Doesn't care about touchwiz feature. I just want my phone to be reactive, fast, and working normally.
Thanks for your answers.
Change your battery. Some posters claim to have lag when their battery are nearly dying as well.

Do you update regularly (Apps & OTA update)?
Try to turn off WiFi & then turn it on again.
As for battery....it's degraded to only 70% of its full capacity.
Usually when it reaches around 40% your phone will stutter + lagging heavily, so make sure to charge at around 50% if you are still considering to use that "broken" battery.
My Advice is to buy a new OEM battery or any good 3rd party battery.
It is a little similar with my 2014 Note 10.1. It also shuts down on its own at right arount 33%. But only sometimes. And yes, it also stutters. I can not vouch for other branded devices. But, I have heard similar stories from friends on their Samsung devices. Definitely get a new battery. Like another post staited. OEM is a great choice. Or, at least a very reputable 3rd party. I purchased a battery for my Note 10. And even though it was new, it was not the same. I found that the circuitry in the cheap aftermarket battery was sub par. The seller sent me a free replacement battery. And it also had issues. So, make sure you get a reputable battery.

Batteries aren't linear though. Its voltage drops off in a curve. (e.g. 4.2v = 100%, 4.1v = 90% and 3.7v = 20%)
Same problem on my 10 months old Note 4 N910C. And it was started about 2-3 months ago, so the battery lasted about 6 months!? Also, there's a burned-in damage on my screen (notification bar)! Yes, warranty is still valid, but anyway... NEVER AGAIN Samsung phone!

Hm... You right about signal. I never looked at this, because whenever I use the phone (at home) and I'm always on 4G internet (unlimited plan), signal meter is on 1-2 bars.I don't know why is signal so bad, when phone is off. Power saving is always ON. About wake locks... I believe that they are from my smart watch (bluetooth),but Bluetooth version on Note4 should be low-power (connection is lost when I'm 4 meters away (in my department)), so... This days I can't reach 2h of SOT (4h-5h when it was new).

Interesting. I'm curious about the power saving if that actually reduces your signal by keeping it in a lower power state. I have never used power saving mode and my rom doesn't recommend it. I wonder if running in normal mode would effect it.
Might look at what apps are using the bulk of your battery as well to see if something rogue is running.

Before Note my phone was Sony Xperia Z and power saving on that phone did a great job. That's why I still use this feature. I also put many apps into the "optimizing mode"... There's no any special app which uses battery. There was Facebook, but I uninstall it.Battery monitoring apps are useless for me because phone is not rooted (still under warranty). Maybe I should try hard reset.

I know it's old thread, but anyway... Last week I finally take my phone to the service, because it's still under warranty. They changed the screen because it was burned-in, they changed the battery (sudden power-offs) and strangely - they changed some faulty system connector. Phone worked and charge befor the repair. I always use only original charger, so how can be some system connector burned??? They changed it for free under warranty, so I assume that it must be some factory fault. I know few people with the same "sudden power-off" problem on different Samsung phones, so...
