Ok so I understand the general idea of CWM and love that I can do updates (rom and OS) and backup my entire system with it. I do not however understand a few things. If I for example backup my entire system while I am on 1.57 and then flash back to 1.26 or upgrade to 1.83, will I be able to restore my backup? Or will it restore my backup and throw me back to 1.57?
I really like wiping the entire sd card and starting from scratch ever so often with a clean install. I had many problems on the iPhone when doing fresh installs then restoring settings. It seemed that along with the settings would come anything bad or not functioning correctly. I am just worried that if I keep updating and flashing and loading different roms all the time, that my main partition will start to get loaded with unwanted junk and my filesystem will become "unclean".
What I would like to do, and I don't know if its possible, is to do a nandroid backup right now on 1.57, update to 1.83 and wipe everything so I have a clean install of 1.83, then restore my nandroid backup of all my exact settings and apps as if nothing ever happened. I am thinking that its not possible and the only way to do what I want is to flash to 1.27, wipe everything, update to 1.57, update to 1.83, then manually install every app again and set all my settings. <------Long, tedious, and stupid.
I also do not want to use TB because of some complaints I have recently been reading.

I don't think this will do what you want. I have never had to use one of my nandroid backups, but my understanding is that they don't just back up settings they back up the entire install. So if you do a nandroid on 1.5.7 then update, then recover using your nandroid backup you will literally be back on 1.5.7 where you started.
what complaints have you heard about TB? I swear by that app, and it has never caused me problems and is one hell of a lot simpler a process than what you're suggesting. also I don't think that's how nandroid backup works. it makes an image so if u restore, you will go right back to the firmware you had when you backed up.
TB will save both your apps and your user settings. try it before you write it off.

I can vouch for TB being awesome. If all your concerned about is User apps, TB will back up all of that PLUS the settings for each app. You also get the choice to save the backup on your sd card, ext sd card, OR DropBox (recommend using it on WiFi). I currently have backups on all 3 hahaha

Unfortunately I don't remember where I read the info but on one of these forums there was a whole thread where people were complaining of force closes on apps that were backed up and restored using titanium backup.

interesting. well i don't know if that would be really TB related because TB doesn't modify the program files in any way. maybe it has to do with freezing certain processes to get rid of bloatware.
for what it's worth, i've done full batch backups and restores onto fresh SBF flashes, and i haven't ever run into any problems.

Ever?
If I do a full backup with TB what EXACTLY will it restore after I flash the stock sbf? All apps and settings for the apps? Will it save my game progress or system settings for the phone?
I was told that the market should restore all downloaded apps when you log into the phone for the first time. I've also been told that blur saves the system settings and restores them. I haven't found either of these to be for me.

This is because people are doing what you've proposed. TB backs up programs and settings. But if you do a drastic change and then try to restore programs with settings for the old framework, it can cause really unexpected challenges which result in the Force Close error messages.
CWM takes a snapshot of EVERYTHING so you definitely wouldn't want to do a backup and try applying it to a different SBF flash. It wouldn't even boot most likely.
When backing things up in TB I just back up the app and NOT the settings. I'm also sure that when I do a batch restore of apps (and NOT their settings) that I don't introduce apps which aren't compatible with the new ROM I'm running.
We don't really have many options for the Atrix at the moment, so not lots of people should be encountering challenges like this. Both programs do exactly what they should. People just don't understand them. Hopefully this helps to clarify things because it can be a big frustration when you think you've backed things up but are really left either stranded without a backup, or you've applied a backup which completely obliterated your phone lol

I love that last sentence and want it in my sig LOL
what's your explanation for just backing up the apps and not the settings?
Sent from my Atrix using XDA App
Just a word of caution: Be extra careful where you store your backups. With how the atrix names phone sdcard and actual sdcard-ext is confusing to apps not updated recognize this. I've lost everything twice now because full backups go missing. Use the cloud or another computer to store them to be safe.
Has anyone restored a nandroid backup...with what results...does that just do the firmware, or do you get apps/data too? I still would like something similar to spb backup for WM...it took EVERYTHING into 1 self extracting, self installing file...I never lost anything with my years on WM and spb backup.

yes, i haven't ever. which i should have just said "have never" had any problems.
have you used TiBu before? you have options. you can batch restore app only, app + data, or data only, and when you do each you can select which apps to exclude/include. so if you want your savegames, your settings, etc, then you can restore the app data.
you can also batch backup/restore system settings separately, which I do not recommend if you are going to a new firmware as it may mess up settings since they will be from different versions.
if you do a whole batch restore of EVERYTHING without paying attention to what might be incompatible in a few firmware, of course you will run into problems. but a nandroid backup will not solve that either because you will just be re-imaging your phone with exactly what you started with in the first place.

I THINK I am understanding that Nandroid will take a picture of the phone - apps and ROM - and backup and restore the entire phone - which is EXACTLY what i am looking for.
If I am correct i assume there are directions somewhere here on how and where to do a full backup and also how to restore just in case.....
thanks for any info
So I didn't root my a500 right off, cos I wasn't sure I wanted to keep it. And now I have a bunch of user data, game progress and such, that I don't want to lose when I root. Is there any way I can back up app data before I root? I'm on 3.2.1. It seems like I should be able to just adb something, but I can't think what. (It's been a long weekend and I'm not braining well.) Would /data/data do the trick?
Yes, /data/data is where it's all at. I'm not positive but I think you could copy it to your external SD and then back it up on PC if you want. Then after the timmyDean root, copy some of the folders back. But just the ones that you need. None of the com.android.* folders for example.
I did the method 2 root, where you flash an unstable downgrade update.zip. It actually left my data intact, so I was able to titanium backup my stuff!

Oh good. I couldn't remember what actually formatted /data originally but knew something did at some point. I love all these ROMs that just have manual format instructions instead of doing it in the update script. It saves so much time!
What the title says really. It has been working fine since I installed ACA march 8th but 2 days ago, for no reason i can see, it stopped acquiring root access. It appears that SU is suddenly automatically denying the permissions but i have never told it to do such a thing for TB. All the other programs i have that require root (Root Explorer and Rom manager to name 2) are working fine.
I have tried, fixing permissions both in Rom manager and CWM more times than i can count, I've done reboots, power offs, soft resets, cleared the caches for both Superuser and TB, reinstalled both, upgraded and downgraded SU and obviously searched my ass off and i just can't get the damn thing to work again.
It's a little important that i get a good backup because the one i have is 2 days old and in the morning I'm going to be picking up my new Endeavour (One X for the uninitiated) and I'll need to transfer everything over.
I know there are a bunch of these threads about but i wouldn't start a new one unless it was really needed. So has anyone got any ideas?

Yeah i tried that. I even rebooted the phone once i had. SU just doesn't want to give the correct permissions.
I have my One X charging on my desk and my brother has agreed to pay me for my Leo so i need to get this sorted pretty quick coz i can't give him the HD2 if it still has my data on it. I will be honest though and say that i'm starting to think the best solution will be to restore the good backup i have from [now] 3 days ago and then work on the leo. If i have to lose the sms messages etc i have for the last few of days then so be it but i am going to blame the rom for the fault if i do.

Maybe it's something to do with ACA? Try this:
1. Backup everything in CWM
2. Flash a new ROM (not ACA)
3. Restore the data partition in CWM (through something like advanced restore, cba to boot into cwm to check it)
4. Load Titanium Backup and see if it works
5. (Assuming it works) backup your apps and enjoy.
Hopefully that might work. Also you don't need to worry about using a ROM with the same partition sizes as ACA, it won't matter (from what I've read, never actually tried it before).

Ok i will try it and report back. i'm in the middle of installing HTC sync for the One X, unlocking its bootloader and flashing a custom rom to it.
To be frank, i wouldn't have kept ACA on it to give anyway for the very simple reason it seems to be far buggier than most of the other CM7 roms out there for the Leo
Thanks to an odd series of events last night (i managed to lock myself out of my flat/apartment) i didn't get to looking into this further but the scheduled TB backup ran at 2AM as normal and it succeeded. Although when i open TB it still says unable to gain root access. So this gets wierder but atleast i have a current, good backup to put on my Endeavour and now i can flash the Leo with a new rom.
I won't say problem solved but i will say crisis averted.

Good to know, hopefully all the backups are good rather than corrupted. I don't know if it overwrites the old ones when it does a new backup, but if I were you I would have copied the old ones to my PC before the scheduled backup. That way, you have a fail-safe, but now if something went wrong you've effectively lost all of your app data.

Titainum backup overwrites or deletes older backups as per user preference. I personally only ever kept one. The backup itself is ok but it turns out the contacts and sms databases in GB are not compatible with ICS so i had to move most stuff the long way round anyway.
It's a good job i keep like 5 backups of my contacts in 5 different places. That would have been a pain otherwise.
Using Skyrocket here but I found this thread because my TiBu failed to get root access after flashing a new ROM.
Solution:
-Go to Settings, then Applications
-Find "Superuser"
-Press "Clear Data"
-Go back to Applications
-Find "Titanium Backup"
-Press "Clear Data"
Close all apps and windows and go to your home screen. Open Titanium Backup. It should then request root access. Allow it.

Got the same problem after 4.1.2 OTA with Galaxy Nexus. Can't resolve following the steps.
I just RESET and rooted my Infuse, added Titanium Backup, and it fails to gain access. Everyone who has this issue seems to have done some ROM install or some other thing. I can't find any report of someone just installing fresh and having this problem. Also seeing mention of hitting the problem button and getting something...I get nothing but a troubleshooting page that tells me to go read a wiki... Then I see people talking about accidentally disallowing titanium in Superuser, What does that mean? There is no Titanium in Superuser.
I just tried the above quoted solution, that did nothing as well.
Nothing on this thread makes Titanium work for me.

Guys, you're wonderful. It just worked for me too, just a minute before I decided to kill myself. Thnx:good:
Took me a long time to try everything specified here. Nothing's worked for me. It happened after I have installed Lollipop ROM on my rooted TMO S5. Finally I have uninstalled the TB Pro 6.1 I had before, and installed a non-Pro version from the Play. Now all works!
So probably the Pro has "incompatibility" with the Lollipop.
The thread is a bit old, but I just wanted to give one more tip if somebody else has similar issues. I encountered after one of the recent TB updates the same issue. I open TB and it does ask for root privileges, but for some reason never obtains them. Tried every possible proposal out there and in the end the only thing that actualy worked for me (although this is a bit of an unsecure setting) is to change the "Default access" setting in SuperSU to "Grant" instead of "Prompt". This is actualy telling the SU to grant acess to every app requesting it w/o prompting the user.
I was having the exact same issue on Titanium Backup 7.2.4 with SuperSu on the Samsung Galaxy SIII (AT&T SGH-I747). I looked at the access logs and discovered that Titanium Backup was getting an error when attempting to load busybox (not su), in spite of what the error says. I installed busybox, and the problem was resolved.
Edit:
1) My signature is really out of date.
2) Problem probably could have also been resolved in the TB preferences -> Troubleshooting by turning off "Force use System Busybox"

Hello!
I've just decided to start experimenting with custom ROMs on my new GS4, and I've been trying to begin by backing up all the crucial stuff on my stock device.
When it comes to backing up my 'efs', however, nothing works for me at all. I've tried doing it with Terminal Emulator and a bunch of different commands, all of which come up with errors, and I've tried doing it through custom recoveries like CWM and TWRP.
When I try to do it with the custom recoveries, the process ends almost instantly and it's impossible for me to find the backup files anywhere when I connect my phone to my PC - according to the custom recovery menus, the backups also have virtually no filesize.
My phone is currently running stock TouchWiz 4.2.2, it's rooted and I'm also using Nova launcher. In the past I installed PACMAN ROM but returned to stock by re-installing my old stock firmware with Odin.
Any help would be appreciated - I really wanna let loose and keep experimenting with Android!

I think I've made some success! I can now see my TWRP efs backup files when I connect my phone to my PC... but they're very small. An entire backup folder is only 50.9KB in size. Is this typical for an EFS backup?
Search for EFS Professional on xda. It's a great application that backs up your EFS folder and stores it on your computer where you can restore it if necessary. Simply download it, make sure you have root and busybox installed, along with the Samsung drivers, when it loads, select backup, choose the i9505 filter, choose the partition block which has EFS on the end, and click backup, job done!
The file you may have backed up might be alright, but I've read about the permissions for the folder not being correct, this application ensures everything is ok.

Thanks for your quick response. I'll give that application a whirl now and see how it works for me. On the side, though, I've noticed that each efs backup I've done with TWRP has a slightly different size (deviation of around 3KB each time). Is this, and the fact that each backup is only ~50KB in size normal?
Thanks again for you time!

Edit - my EFS partition is only 36KB, whereas the backup on my i9100 was 135KB. The application said the backup was completed successfully, so I'm happy enough. It must be that small.

I'll check my backup on my computer now to see what the file size is. As far as I can remember, it may be around that size, and I noticed that the partition is a lot smaller than the i9100 partition.

I'm attempting this method now using EFS Professional 2.0.46 and the instructions here (http://www.galaxys4manual.com/tips-backup-and-restore-efs-folder-in-samsung-android-devices/). I've installed BusyBox and enabled USB debugging, but EFS Professional keeps giving me this error:
"readlink: applet not found. Please install a BusyBox binary that contains the required applet. BusyBox v1.20.2-Stericson is recommended for compatibility."

Download the busybox installer from the play store made by Stericson, open it, give it root access, when the install busybox option comes up, select the version EFS Professional application suggests, then try again.
Also, I did post the file size for my backup but it clearly didn't work, it was only 36KB.

Thank you yet again for your help. I've now got the correct version of BusyBox running and EFS Professional seems to be interfacing with it happily. At this point I realize that the site I linked gives incredibly poor instructions on how to run the EFS Pro program.
I've screencaptured my current situation: http://i.imgur.com/CgHZdiM.png
Do I want to tick only the box with the 'efs' partition name, or do I also want to include the three below it with 'efs' included in the middle of a bunch of other letters and numbers?

See I wasn't sure either, so I've asked on the applications thread on xda here. For the record, I didn't even notice the other three had efs in them, and I only chose the one that has efs at the end. I'll update if any news comes back from the application thread. Also, a simple click of the thanks button is appreciated

Well it turns out you select all of the partitions and then back up. I've never done this, and I clearly have never been doing this right. Time to make another back up haha.

Looks like we both got something out of this, then! I appreciate your time and input - I was losing my mind over all the obstacles I was running into. Gave you all the thumbs up I could.
Cheers!
EDIT: Oh, wait! Do you mean that you have to select ALL partitions or just those that mention efs in their names?

For some reason it doesn't seem to work. When I look at the play store reviews, they say that Titanium Backup doesn't work well restoring apps with 4.3. For me it just hangs at 0%. 4.3 has been out for a while, what have people been using?

Hi, andrewdroid...
Yes, I've just been looking at the reviews you mention, and I must admit, I'm puzzled.
I've been running Jellybean 4.3 (recently updated to build JWR66Y) since the beginning of August, and I've had no problems with restoring apps from Titanium.
I recall, during the first few days of JB 4.3, there where issues with Titanium, and the recommended advice was to change the backup path (where you're backups are stored) as follows...
Go to... Titanium>>Menu>>Backup folder location...
...and navigate (using the back button) to /storage/emulated/legacy/TitaniumBackup ...and select 'Use the current folder'.
And at the time, this worked for me. But subsequent updates to Titanium fixed the problem, and my backup path is now the more technically correct /storage/emulated/0/TitaniumBackup.
Titanium will offer to move the files to the new location, but in the event, nothing actually gets moved, because the locations are actually identical... just different ways of specifying the same location.
So, you could try modifying your backup path location in Titanium settings as outlined above, using either of the two 'paths' I've given. I've just tried both, and in both instances, my backups restored flawlessly.
I've no idea if this will work for you, but I do know there was an issue back in the early part of August, and the 'legacy' path fixed it for me... maybe it might for you.
Hope this helps... and good luck.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Just completed my first root and flashed my tablet to cyanogenmod. I'd like to thank this community for making it so simple. It seemed like a lot of reading but every instruction had a purpose and i understood it more as the process went along. I had no problem throughout the process due to the very detailed instructions here on this forum.
However, I seem to have made one mistake. I used TiBu to backup my apps and data. However, i failed to make the update.zip folder as i didn't think about losing the app when i flashed to the new rom. When i check my device, there is a huge titanium backup folder.
Is there a way i can restore my apps and data from the tibu folder, or did i lose it all by not creating the update.zip folder?
Im afraid to just reinstall TiBu in case it overwrites the old folder.
This is the only problem I had with the whole process and appreciate any help or suggestions.

Rename the huge titanium backup folder, install TiBu, delete new folder and rename huge titanium backup folder back to original name.
