Making Calls on the Note 8 With Hangouts 2.3... - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

As you probably know, Google just released a Hangouts Dialer that you can use with a new version of Hangouts (2.3) to make VOIP calls. I was curious to see if I could use it with my Note 8 (Wifi). Unfortunately, while I was able to download the Dialer, the Play Store said Hangouts 2.3 was incompatible with my device. So I downloaded the official apk from Android Police and installed it on my device to see what would happen. To my pleasant surprise, it works perfectly!
You do not need to be rooted for this to work. You may, however, need a Google Voice number and GV installed on your Note -- I'm not 100% sure about that. I clicked through the various prompts without paying close attention, but I remember approving some kind of integration the GV.

I can confirm that it is also working on my N5110 with the 2.3 version of the Hangouts apk from Android Police. You also have to install the new Hangouts Dialer app and that can be done through "Help and Feedback" in the main Hangouts app or by installing the additional apk from Android Police.

Thanks guys,
Downloaded 2.3 and dialer but now I'm told I need credits to make calls? How do you get credits and what does it cost.
Thanks,

Weird... I haven't seen anything like that. Are you located outside the U.S. and/or trying to call internationally?

Thanks, ramjet73 and bigmout,
Sorry for responding only now. I was in an area where reception was poor, something obviously unheard of in the US!
I'm not from the US or Canada - Thanks for the help I'll look at Google.

Won't work cause the Verizon version uses Verizon own voice connection to handle the call. Also the app dials a specific Verizon number when you make a call. So it will never work on anything but Verizon phones

Just unzip it and get the *.apk to the phone. Then you can install it. The app is working great for me but will it work over WiFi? When it asks for your phone number, is that supposed to be your cell or Skype DID?

I have a skype apk and it works, its a BETA but it still works you can chat and call, I kept the apk for awhile, there is another that you can only chat with this one you can make calls. I can send to you if your interested.
It is awesom BETA Skype. I through I was dreaming.
I was about to start hating Skype but now it is all changed.
All i wanted is to be able to use Skype while at home or work and chat with my family abrode skype-to-skype.
I have a question, it asks for the phone number when I login?!
Should I enter my cell number when I do that?
Like for example +1858 and mobile number?
What is this number for?
Is it for caller ID to be displayed if you call land line or mobile?
My second question is can you make land line or mobile calls from this version or just skype to skype?
When I installed it asked me if I wanted to all Call IN and that it would use my Skype Credit minutes for it?!
How does that work?
could you send me a beta skype thingy? Would really to call my family overseas
(does it work over wifi? or minutes)

Its your phone number that skype people can call you at but you will have to pay for these calls. Skype works for free only between registered skype callers so the first think you need to do is register online at there website, during this time you will need to create a "name", its like a member name this is how skype people call other skype people not with an actual phone number although you can buy a phone number so you can call non members and non members can call you through skype. I will send you an email with a link to down load the apk. You do need to enter a phone number when logging on I just put my real mobile number, actually its my GV number. But when first running the apk you will be asked who you want to call you, choose "only skype members", unless you buy a number but like I said you will be asked to fill in a phone number.
I just tried the app and unfortunately it totally sucks ;-(
It is trying to imitate Google Voice with the call back number.
Basically it uses your voice service and does not work on wifi or 3G to make calls even skype-to-skype totally lame. What is the point?!

no,the vibrant has it because tmobile has a contract with another company which is providing their voip. you cannot do the same thing with verizon unless they create the same kind of app. the one on the vibrant was created by tmobile.

I keep hoping that with Google's (somewhat) recent inclusion of the ability to make phone calls via Gmail, and that combined with having a Google Voice number...maybe /some/time in the near future they would get off their lazy butts and improve our Voice app (so that we can make calls too).
This would be great because many of the computer labs at school have perfect WiFi reception, but no cellular signal can seem to penetrate those terrible brick walls.
I have the same problem with some of our computer labs. By the way, there is sipdroid which you can use right now and I think it has some free voip provider you can use with it.

My brother is using Google voice on his g1 running cyanogen rom as his primary dial out number ....its weird, my Google voice on my fascinate has three options, use Google voice for international calls, don't use Google voice for calls, and ask for international calls. His has an extra option, use Google voice for all calls....I'm not sure if this is a mod of Google voice from the cyanogen team or what...also, fwiw he's on T-Mobile, but T-Mobile has no coverage above edge in our area so....he typically dials out over wifi...

Google Voice/Sprint Integration

Screenshot says it all...
I've been counting the days until this was to be.. Now I know...
HELLS YEAH! Thanks for the info!
I just logged into my Google Voice Account, (I had a previous Google Voice # separate from my Sprint #) and now there is a Sprint logo next to my cellphone number that is linked to my Google Voice Account.
If I click edit, under my sprint cellphone number it brings up a new menu
You can now see there is checkbox where I can select if i want my text messages to come through google voice.
Old Functionality
That 'send text message' is old functionality and only gives GV permission to send various texts to that specific cell phone.
Once the integration is available to everyone (jealous of those in Beta, BTW) you will just click the 'Change/Port' link next to your current GV number.
Hope this helps!
I can't wait for this to happen. I want GV integration soooo bad.
@azyouthinkeyeiz you rule!
Be careful! As of today, if you call Sprint tech support, they'll walk you through the "sprint integration" by getting you to PORT your number. They assured me it wouldn't port - but everything on googles site was saying "are you really sure you want to cancel your cell contract..." I bailed. Glad I did, as many others fell for this and lost their lines.
When you have the option in your account it will look different than what we see now...

When I try to do it, it tells me there will be a $20 charge payble via google check out.
If you get the $20 charge warning, that is the path to PORTING your number... DO NOT PROCEED.
Apparently some accounts are, in fact, active with the integration tools (beta accounts). They have an extra set of options that the rest of us don't.
Mojo, can you describe the options you had (or post some screen shots)?
They sent me the beta invitation about a month ago. As soon as I logged in, a screen popped up asking me if I wanted to use my existing gv number or use my sprint number. From what I've read on the net, it should be open to all sprint customers on the 26th.
Before the beta, I got that same $20 mesage to port my number over. Just wait!!!! Everyone should get the option soon.

I got an invite a couple weeks back and tried it out. I didn't like it at all. SMS kinda works but mms attachments don't. That's with the stock messaging program too. Until google fixes call routing, lag during conversations and adds the ability to send AND receive attachments in both stock and gv apply, I will keep everything separate. IMO it's not all what it's cracked up to be.

Google Voice is a call routing scheme. Basically, you'll be able to port your Sprint phone number as your Google Voice number. GV will then be able to take any call made to your Sprint number and route it where ever you wish - you can have it ring both your home phone and your mobile, your mobile and your work phone, your wife's phone too, etc. You can even set it up so that if certain people call you it will route differently. Also, all voice mail is stored on the GV servers and automatically transcribed (although typically not well). In theory it's very cool - kind of like a personal, virtual PBX. Sounds like there are a few technical hickups though.
Speak of the devil...
Hello,
You have been invited to start enjoying the benefits of the Sprint integration before anyone else! We are interested in your feedback as we roll this out to the entire user base and have listed a link to a form where you can send feedback and/or questions.
There are two ways to enable the integrated service:
1. Option 1: Keep your Sprint number (all the benefits of porting without the need to). In this case, your Sprint number becomes your Google Voice number so that when people call your Sprint mobile number, it rings all the phones you want.
How to enable this: click on the "change/port" link next to your GV # in the settings page, choose the option to use your existing number, enter your Sprint number and select the Sprint option.
2. Option 2: Replace your Sprint number with your Google Voice number (all the benefits of the app without the need for one). In this case, all calls made from your Sprint phone will display your Google Voice # natively (same for SMS).
How to enable this: click on the "enable Google Voice on your Sprint phone" link next to your Sprint forwarding phone. If the link does not show, click on edit and use the link to verify whether your phone is eligible.
In both cases, Google Voice replaces Sprint voicemail (pressing one on your phone links you to your Google Voicemail) and international calls made from the Sprint phone will be connected by Google Voice. Integrating your account with Sprint means you will still get the benefits of Any Mobile Any Time if that is included in your service plan.
Important Notes:
The integrated service only works with a valid Sprint mobile number.
For this early release, Sprint support channels will not be available for support, including Sprint Retail Stores, Sprint Customer Care, Sprint Telesales, Sprint Direct Sales Reps, etc.
If you need support, or have feedback, please fill out this form
If you use the Google Voice app on Android, you will need to log out and log back in to make sure the app stops using call interception.
Thanks,
Vincent Paquet, on behalf of the Google Voice team

[Q] N4 on AT&T - possible to get visual voicemail?

Coming from an iPhone on AT&T, I'm looking for any solutions for visual voicemail on the N4. Does it only work on phones officially supported/sold by AT&T? Any solutions without redirecting my voicemail to another provider such as Google Voice?
I don't see at&t's visual voicemail app in the play store but you might be able to side load it just fine (if your on the LTE data plan that includes visual voicemail). Or, just go with Google voice. Why don't you want to use that? I've used it on many phones for a few years now and it works just fine. Never had an issue with it.
There's also apps like youmail, etc. but behave like Google voice AFAIK

+1 on the G Voice. I was in the same boat as you (iPhone 4 on AT&T) and switched to G Voice with the Nexus. Haven't looked back. Also, if you used Voice on iOS it's completely different and integrated tighter on Android.
Ah, there's an AT&T Visual Voicemail app... It didn't occur to me to check the play store first. And there's also an AT&T Messages app too that cannot be used at the same time as the AT&T VVM app. I'm not sure what plan exactly I'm on, when I called them I told them to provision my SIM for 4G/LTE (APN: phone) even though I know the N4 is not an LTE phone, but wanted to make sure LTE is available if I move the SIM to a different phone.
Based on the reviews I'm not sure I want to mess with either of these 2 apps
I'll try and live without VVM for a while and then consider using GV if I must have it.
Just use GVoice. The att VVM app doesn't work well on non-specifically supported devices. I have a vivid right now and even though the vivid is a supported device, the custom ROM I'm running doesn't like the VVM app. GVoice works great though and has so many options like setting different greetings for different groups/people.

I decided that I can live without VVM, I just do it the old school long press 1 now... At some point I think I will port my mobile number to GV and get it over with, which will also get me ready for the rumored Google cell service late next year.
The N4 is not officially supported by the AT&T VVM app, but it may or may not work. You'd have to find a recent apk from someone and just install it on your N4. Then you have to call AT&T as they have to enable the VVM feature for you. If you already put the correct N4 IEMI on your account they will probably not do it, they will say your unknown device is not supported. If they don't pay attention, they might enable the feature anyway. If you go through the pain, let us know what you found out.

Good news is that I have not added the N4's IMEI on the account, it still has my GS3 listed. I will give AT&T a call and have them add my IMEI and the VVM feature to my account and if all goes well, they will get it done. I saw a .apk floating around here a few months ago, not sure if that is still the current package or not but I'll report back and let you know of my experience.
I'd look for a very recent apk, the LG Optimus G is a supported device for VVM so chances are it may also work on the N4.

Upload the apk to the phone and then install the apk on the device. Once installed, reboot device. Once rebooted, open the ATT voicemail app so it can call home and configure itself. I'm using an international version of the motorola razr hd and ATT VVM app works just fine for me.
Just note, you won't be able to get the apk from google play. you'll need to search the interwebz for the apk.
One thing to note, if you're not using an AT&T branded phone, you do have to use workarounds for installing ATT VVM app.

Google voice/hangouts integration going live?

My buddy on his oneplus one texted me with hangouts and i'm getting it from his google voice number. I had him text a random friend of mine and the number shows up as his google voice number as well. MMS not working via hangouts for google voice. it just sends it via the phones number instead of the google voice number.
Can anyone test this to see if google voice/hangouts integration is working?
