Using headset as microphone only - Hardware Hacking General

Hello,
So basically my phone's mic isn't working (HTC Sensation XE). The problem is that the port pins on the motherboard are broken. No easy fix for that.
I would like to cut some headset and make it only a mic that I will fix to the back case cover. however, is there a way to make the phone use only the mic and not transfer the sound as well? So I can speak to the headset but hear from the phone as regular.
Thank you!

There is an easy and non-destructive way to test that. If you're interested pm me , i'll explain on skype or something.

Im interested in knowing this too

[Q] Can't take a call with headphones through 3.5 mm stereo jack

Anybody verify that when headphones are plugged in to the 3.5mm stereo jack and a call is either placed or picked up that you can hear the person on the other end through the headphones but the person on the other end cannot hear you?
The mic is essentially disabled when the headphones are connected.
I have confirmed with Blackberry, HTC HD2, & Mytouch Headphones that you can indeed talk to the person. I did have a problem with pushing in the headphones in all the way, & when they weren't in all the way they couldn't hear me so make sure it is fully contacted with the jack.
Well it definitely looks like this is a proprietary issue. I took my phone back to verizon to check whether or not the phone was defective. Brought my handsfree (both Ifrogz and V-moda) to test on in-store fascinate. Made a phone call and the sales guy couldn't hear me. Put it in his storm2 and it worked just fine.
Went back and used a co-workers samsung's handsfree, and it worked perfectly. I wish they would've included the handsfree in verizon package. Unless somebody has tested out another handsfree brand to let us know, I'm thinking the 3.5mm jack is customized to samsung accessories only.
Interesting find!
Keep in mind I'm not trying to use a handsfree headset - I'm attempting to use my Bose In-Ear headphones.
I used to be able to take calls on my Incredible (and other phones) with them if I was out trail running, walking, just listening to music, etc.
You have an excellent good point with regards to a proprietary 3.5 mm port due to the fact that it also supports video out.
get a cheap nokia headset controller ad-54 on ebay.. the changes the wiring so calls can work through headphones.. ie one of these
http://cgi.ebay.com/AD-54-HS-45-Han...464602?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2a0a6bd19a
I also can confirm that this doesn't work with the Fascinate. On numerous occasions, I have been walking to class on campus while listening to music. I assumed I could just answer the call and speak, because I could do that on my Droid X, but the caller wasn't able to hear me.
I'm assuming Bose headphones do not have a microphone, so how do you plan on using those for calls?
You need to use headphones with a 4 prong jack, which has a mic, such as the OEM ones

Plugging in the headphones disables the main microphone on the phone though, even if there is not a mic on the headset. Normally on other phones I've had, I could answer while on the headphones and just speak into the phone's mic, but that us not possible with this phone. I don't know if there is a remedy for this that doesn't involve using a special set of headphones...

I used my old blackberry headphones from my Storm and doesn't work but I noticed my friend had a spare headphones for his HD2. I should asks him for them.i doubt he needs a spare since he rarely uses a headphone.

So I figyred how to use my blackberry headset on my Fascinate. I had to unplug after making a call and then plug it back in.
Why does every cell phone with top notch hardware specs get released with all these tiny little software glitches.

I'm not sure if it was just me but I also had something odd happen. I used to use my iPhone for navigation and music in my car so, naturally, I use my new Fascinate the same way. I received a call while using my bluetooth headset and the phone routed audio to the car stereo instead of the bluetooth headset. I could hear the caller but they (obviously) couldn't hear me. The audio source on the screen was set to bluetooth too. Fairly annoying.
Anyone able to solve this?
Are you on a stock rom or a custom one? I believe this has been fixed with the Super Clean rom.

I'm using SC 2.9.2 and the receiving end couldn't hear anything.
I've run into this same issue. My wife's car has a bluetooth phone connection, so when in her car, I have my phone plugged into her stereo for music. When a phone call comes through, the call is picked up through the bluetooth, but the other end can't hear me unless I unplug the cable from the headphone jack.

[REQ] Phone Call: Route internal speaker sound to headphone jack when plugged in

Hi all,
When i'm driving, my phone is always connected to the headphone jack, so i can listen to spotify over my car's radio ^^
But when i receive a call, the phone always routes the audio output to the internal speaker, which is rather useless in this situation
Is it somehow possible to route the sound to the headphone jack, when receiving a phone call? Maybe some kind of a kernel patch?
Would make a good replacement for a hands-free kit

Yes, this is something I should implement soon in Voodoo sound.
In skype, I could make voice calls using a headphone without microphone. Skype all automatically uses the built in microphone.
Now, how do we make dialer the same?

What I do to fix this problem is to use a Nokia headset adapter since Nokia uses the same 4 pin configuration as Samsung and it works.
I don't really think this can be fixed software wise... I would be pleasantly surprised if it was

Thanks for your fast response . I would also donate for such a feature. Maybe you can pm me, when it's available.
Btw, thanks for your great work. Love the Voodoo Kernel

earphones headset issue

I have already tried 2 different headsets with my i9000.They were working fine in the beggining but now the left one works in a VERY low volume.I tried with voodoo but nothing changed. Can someone help me with Service Mode.I think there is the problem and the solution .thanks!
U broke ur head phones, simple as that.

I already said that i have tested another pair and they work fine in listening music etc. When the audio jack is a simple 2way then the music works fine. When i insert a 3way(with mic) audio jack, samsung & 3rd party earphones with mic, one speaker doesnt work even nearly as loud as the other.
Maybe low battery, u may have not noticed low battery.

That's because the 3 way audio jack is meant for apple products, I had this problem before until I realised that you had to hold down the mic button. If you want these to work you can buy adapters on ebay on the cheap.
i have the same problem after installing cm 7.1 - earphones works with any other device, but not with my sgs. holding down mic button doesn't work. I tried to use adaptors added to my urbanears headset (dedicated for nokia / other devices) - still the same issue.
well isnt there any way the Service mode can alter to balance the speakers?I have used voodoo with great results in normal earphones 2way-jack,but on the 3way it becomes a little loud but not as the other speaker!Abput the adaptors i have noticed people who worked for them and people who didnt. What adapter is the most <trustworthy>?
If you are using headset (earphone+mic+remote) for Apple or HTC, get a 3.5mm male to female TRRS adapter.
This will solve your problem.
No i am using the original samsung headset and another headset to check if the samys if faulty!i am fooling around inside service mode but cant find anything. How do i revert any changes back to stock in the Service mode?
anyone get to the bottom of this - driving me mad !
original headset - v low volume - increases when you push mic button
very weird
Original Sammy-made headphones (3 way) work fine on sgs. I had problem like this because I was simply not plugging 'em down and now headphones work normally. Since 3-way female 3.5mm is unified for all devices, you have to try to blow out all dust out of the phone 'cuz audio port isn't covered like usb or this plug in as far as possible.
I am also facing same sort of problem, most of the headphones don't work during call but do work on music
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
I have tried everything - phones are definitely pushed in properly - port is clean , as asrafw says phone volume on headset is fine for music - just rubbish for calls . Asra does your mic key on headset being held increase volume ?
I have found the opposite - do not push them all the way down then they work fine !
Headphones
You have to buy an iPhone-Nokia adapter, or switch the ground and data pins on any other headphone, which is designed iPhone-style.
To verify that the headset is that kind, if you press the middle button, then you should hear the music clearly.
Or buy headphones made for Nokia or Sony (Ericsson) products.
Even Samsung have changed to the new style with Galaxy Tab, so no proof that if it works with newer Samsung products, then it will work with our phones.
Have you tried a neutral stereo adapter. I got one with my UrbanEars headphones and they work well with it attached.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA
Yes, the middle button (mic) does improve volume - so what you are saying is that these headsets never worked properly ever !
Do you have a photo of the adapters you 2 are using - just want to make sure I get it right ,
cheers
This is a pic of my cable. I noticed last night that the headphone plug itself is a little different than the neutral stereo plug in that the neutral plug on has two coloured bands whereas the headphone plug has 3. This must be the difference between I pods and earlier androids.

thanks - I presume that is 2.5mm to 3.5mm convertor ?
Hmmm think its a 2-way / 3-way thing rather than a size thing.

so boths end of jack are 3.5mm ?

Haven't you heard the news?
You can't make audio/video calls on Skype yet, no microphone is supported as of today.
You can only use it for IM.

It has been said a lot about those mics in that thread, but the OP made 2 different opinions about using skype. The other users only used those mics with Voice Recording(Tape-a-talk app I think), nobody was able to make a call with skype.
Could you please share your experience with the 3 pins microphone? (I haven't got any of them so I can't try)

Crashes for me as well. I was hopeful given the threads about 3 pin mic support. I have extra headsets--if you dm I'll send you one.
I only tried voice calling the Echo / Sound Test Service, and it doesn't crash. However, it does just hang up after it rings.
I was able to launch the Skype apk attached to this thread successfully. It allowed me to make an outgoing call with the Fire and using the Edutige EIM-001 mic, but it disconnected the call a second or two after I picked up the call on my cell. I wasn't able to hear my voice when I called my cell since it disconnected so quickly. Unfortunately this is a mic only with a TRRS connector so the speakers are disconnected when it is plugged in. I am going to do some tests to see if I can rig the mic to work without causing Fire speaker disconnect. I still have to test with Google Voice.
I would be interested to know about it very much. So far I have no luck to make a call using mic
I been working on the mic problem all night. So far I think this tablet is missing something. Skype loads but wen making a call it does not see a mic at all.
Changing settings I have got the mic to work with a recorder for a test done a 20 min voice test no problems at all. But other apps like talking tom so on give error of no mic found.
Still working on this but not seeing what the problem could be.

I have a successful call using Google Voice but unfortunately only one direction
I mean I could make a call and the other party could receive this call. The problem is that I could hear what that party talk but I can't get his voice. It looks that it works only incoming direction ... but it looks to me that mic itself is ok.
Anyone has has better experience?

What are the changes that you made? Were you using a standard headset mic?
Sounds promising....
I did no changes. I used mic: Universal 3.5mm In-Ear Stereo Headset w/ On-off & Mic for , HTC myTouch 4G Unfortunately I don't have enough technical knowledge to resolve the issue although it sounds promising

Can i listen to calls via headphone jack in car?

It should work right since it is possible with the headphones that come with the iPhone. I know this is completely different since one is a car and the other is earplugs, but it should be possible right? Instead of using the nexus 4 speakers on calls I can use the car speakers. And use the phone's built in mic to talk. I appreciate your input dearly and thanks for any input!
Yes, that's exactly how it works. If your phone is still plugged in when you answer the phone call, the audio will come out of your car's speakers.
I can confirm as well. It works well and I leave my phone in the cup holder while on a call and people hear me just fine. No one has complained about hearing themselves either.
