[Q] New OTA Verizon update? Will I loose hotspot? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I started getting a notification today that I need to update, I believe it's to 4.4.4. Will I loose the hotspot via foxfi? I'm still locked into unlimited so I need this to work.

Not sure what you are afraid to loose but you can make a backup and restore after the update.

I am grandfathered in to an unlimited plan, so If I want to be able to use the hotspot with out pay Verizon an additional $30 a month I have to have a work around, wondering if I will loose the only work around that currently works.
As of now, the phone can't be rooted with out going to an older kernel.

Well I answered my own question. Accidentally his update, wifi hotspot is still working.

so, your S5 works with foxfi? is your phone rooted or not?

My S5 is not rooted and I can use my hotspot via Foxfi. They found a loop hole in the software, they use your VPN to make it work with out being rooted.

Yes.
Solution is to search, read, read some more. Then search and read.

Without rooting to install a custom ROM, or to install the hotspot mod, I suspect you can't get free hotspot. You may be able to use foxfi to tether one device - not sure if it works with the 4.3 update.

Let me know if FoxFi works for you. I am going to go trade my iPhone 5 with someone who has a GS4 on my lunch break, and I would like to continue using my free wifi tethering while I'm at work today with my iPad, since I have to wait until I get home to Root my new phone. I hope this GS4 has a compatible verision of JB that works with FoxFi, fingers crossed.

If you are going to root your S4, you can just install the hotspot mod and get free wifi tethering that way - no need for FoxFi

PSA: Capture the VZW 5.1 OTA so we can edit the 5.1 image for root with MOFO

Title says it all. Before flashing the download, take a look in your /cache folder and see if you can save it.
EDIT: Can you tether with your non verizon sim card?

Or use adb and grab a logcat.
The update has already been posted as the soak. Now a full files are needed for mofo to be tested.
And I was happy to have that soak file, Shane!
No problem. Now I think if someone who has taken the update did a system pull of 5.1 I think that'd be helpful for the developers. You might need root for that though :/ I can't quite remember
We need the FXZ in order to get the full system.img to use with mofo. Right now the OTA only patches the existing one.
Why not just use the soak? Same build

Yes but our copies of MoFo won't work if you upgrade the bootloader on your device.

Yeah
My current plan is to flash everything except motoboot.img and gpt.bin from the new update and see if it boots in order to preserve the ability to root. I've been checking MDM (finally got it to work!) though and they haven't pushed it out yet.
I hope mofo gets working with 5.1
I'm dying to try it, but I need tether now that I have it.

Me too but I hope that the boot.img will flash with the 5.0 bootloader and partition table not upgraded.

Just be careful, because the minute MDM downloads and then uncompresses the files, it starts to install them on your device. If you disconnect your device from your computer during the download, I am pretty sure that MDM just stops.
The reason Im dying for root now, is that before when I had my ATT sim card, I could tether just fine, was enabled and everything, without root. As long as I didnt run a verizon sim I could tether. Now, it stops at communicating with server. I dont understand why they would now block other carriers tethering as well. This was the reason I didnt care much about root, was I figured I would be unaffected. Am I ever regretting buying a verizon device. Never again.

So when you put an AT&T SIM in a Verizon Moto X 2014 running 5.1 it won't tether on AT&T? But it would tether on AT&T on 5.0 with tethering enabled? What AT&T plan are you on?
Have you tried the app HotSpot Control?

Correct, it will not tether on other networks now. I have a Straight talk ATT sim. LTE / HSPA+ I have not tried it, but I will as long as I can without root

I think this is one of the issues with using Verizon devices on GSM carriers. The build.prop file is set up for Verizon, not the other carrier's system.
If the bootloader is unlocked then you can mess around with the Verizon settings.
With iPhones, Apple can control Verizon but with Androids, Verizon controls the phone manufacturers and gets them to do things Verizon's way. If you can unlock the bootloader, you can take control back. If not, then you are at the mercy of Verizon and their policies.

Hopefully maiko1 will be able to crack the 5.1 bootloader.
I too have learned my lesson with these locked down tight phones. I bought my Moto X 2014 on Cyber Monday but it sat unused until April when we got MoFo. I can't live w/o tethering so I will never buy another Verizon phone until a root method exists that can give me free tether. The problem is that it is getting harder and harder for the devs to find ways to do that. I really want to stick with Motorola but if there is no Dev Ed for the MX15, then I won't get it. I worry that there won't be any other options though.

I still confused. So, if I have ATT phone (locked bootloader) on T-Mobile network, will tethering be working if I update to 5.1? I am on KK 4.4.4 now and tethering works with no issues.

I was able to tether an ATT sim on 5.0, updated to 5.1 OTA and now cannot.
Im on 5.1 and i could tether just fine! I have T-Mobile. Maybe if you disable as many Verizon apps as you can it could work? (and clear their data) That's what I did.

Has anyone tried this mobilego root on S5 OG5 yet? It successfully rooted the latest Verizon S4 5.1 rom so it might work on the S5. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3254434

I tried it. Initial connection popped up some error messages in Windows, but I was then able to browse my apps files contacts etc from MobileGo. The "OneClickRoot" button, unfortunately, did not work. Threw an error and then my phone rebooted.

Rooting Questions and Purpose?

Hello,
I have not rooted a phone since the Galaxy Nexus....
Back then I could still receive OTAs but it looks like this has changed? I am receiving my nexus 6P today and am wondering if I should root or not?
The main reason I rooted before was to get tethering... I've used Foxfi on my Note3 (current phone) for that and only use it sporadically since I am always around wifi unless going on a road trip. I do also have unlimited data on Verizon so I should stick it to them as long as I can though... ;p
So my questions...
1. Do I have to re-root and install images manually now instead of getting OTAs
2. Does the re-root process mean I have to re-configure everything? -- Do I lose any data?
3. What are some of the main reasons for rooting now?
4. Does Google handle the OTAs or does it still go through Verizon meaning I still have to wait forever to get them?
Thanks!
You don't need root to tether

Depends on your carrier, I thought most US carriers had tethering blocked on the 6P? I know it works on Verizon though.

He mentioned Verizon so I'd think it's safe to assume he's on Verizon. But yes, I'm speaking only on behalf of my experience tethering on Verizon UDP

I didn't see that, my bad! Yes, tethering works just fine out of the box on Verizon.
Free Tethering?!?
I don't need to root to tether on Verizon? Since when? Did I miss something? Where do I do this?!? What other point is there to rooting other than having the latest and greatest a little earlier. Does Verizon handle the OTAs or does Google? In other words, if lets say 6.1 comes out today, I know I can flash it right away, will Google get it to me in like 1-2 weeks or does it go through big red and take 1-2 months?
Thanks,
There are less and less reasons to root. However, you should unlock the bootloader, so if you ever need to root, you won't need to wipe your device .
another reason to unlock the bootloader : you can always flash the google factory image if you don't want to wait for the OTA (without "-w" to avoid wiping userdata) or if you something bad happen
I do it for Xposed. The customization in Gravity Box, YouTube Backround Playback, and YouTube Adaway. Then also to install Adfree. Not much else though.
So I can unlock my bootloader and it wont affect OTA updates or anything else? I won't need to flash a rom every time I want to upgrade?

I didn't realise you had double-posted this when I answered your questions in my guide thread. Please don't double-post, it's against the rules. Anyway, I've answered your initial questions in my guide thread. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't affect OTA. Root does though, you can't flash an OTA with root or it'll fail. The easiest way to upgrade is by flashing the factory images via the instructions in my guide.

Sorry about that. I should have deleted my question in your guide -- either way thanks for the update! I think for now, I am just going to unlock my bootloader and in the future if I need to root / flash I can w/o having to wipe my entire phone and start over.

[Q] Nougat 7.0 Hotspot unrooted?

I am part of the Samsung beta and running 7.0 version G935PVPU4ZPLN and wondering if there is a way to use wifi tether being unrooted, even if it is a paid app. I am currently using FoxFi with PdaNet to tether via USB and it works well but would love to be able to use it as a hotspot. FoxFi tells me I don't have a Sprint subscription when trying to use the wifi function. Any other away? Or is there a way to root and accomplish this?
Anyone?

I dont believe there is any way to do it without root!? Every way has been patched by sprint unfortunately.
So can the beta Nougat 7.0 be rooted in order to use a hotspot?
