[Q] Rom/Kernel for battery life? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hallo all!
I've rooted my phone, and I believe I installed clockword mod a while back. I can't remember exactly how I did it, so Ill have to find some guides etc... again
Any way, the phone is becoming a little slow, and battery life is becoming a bit of an issue....
And Im looking at putting a custom ROM on it, that is a balance between battery/power, as well as a suitable kernel - if any one has any ideas?
I guess I want to put Android KitKat on to it, and then Android L at a later date (unless Android L is already available for the nexus 4???)

The ROM won't have much to do with battery life. The kernel has a bit to do with battery life, but the real culprit is all your apps and how you use your phone. As time goes by, you install more apps. More apps means more crap running in the background. More things that need to sync, check for updates, push annoying useless notifications, etc. I won't tell you not to install a custom ROM/kernel (btw, check out HellsCore), but improved performance will be largely placebo.

XDA is a development site not a support site. As such members are expected to do the research, read through the development threads and decide what is BEST for them. The only results that would be posted here are what each member has found to be BEST for them by experimentation based on their phone/usage/setup/apps/signal strength. Please take the time to read through those development threads to learn all about the software you are about to drastically alter your very expensive device with.
Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.

Why do you use a custom ROM on your SGS2?

I got my S2 yesterday and so far, am very pleased with it. Before it, I had a ZTE Blade, which was my first smart phone.
With the blade, I was still on 2.1 when 2.3 came out, my network provider put a load of garbage on the phone that really slowed it down, not to mention taking up valueable space. Bascially, there was an endless list of problems that needed addressing. As a consequence, I started trying out custom ROMs almost as soon as I got the phone.
With the S2 however, I ditched the standard launcher, put on ADW EX, switched in a number of apps instead of the Samsung defaults, but I can't say I've found any significant bugs yet that make me thing I need to go custom.
Everything just works (let's hope it stays that way!), which is a world away from where I was with my old Blade.
With that in mind, why do you use a custom ROM? I think it can be split into two areas, bug fixes, and nice additions. From my reading so far:
Bug fixes:
Shutter lag on the camera?
Nice additions:
Bettery battery life through new kernals
ICS! (ok this is a big one, if Samsung is slow with their update and there's a custom ROM that works well, that will probably be enough to tempt me)
Notification lights (I don't understand why all phones don't have this by default, I fell in love with it on my old Nokia 6300 and the blinking red light is ever present on my work Blackberry)
Deeper theming - I do miss my circular battery indicator
I'm sure you guys will help me add to the list. The thing is, what is the cost? With my Blade, I craved a phone that was fast and reliable. I seem to have that now, and if the custom ROMs introduce their own bugs or decrease stability, I don't think it will be worth it for me.
Let me know your thoughts, I'm not trying to start a flame war. This community is a lot bigger with so many more projects and ROMs going on, I'm struggling to get a handle on it all. Hopefully this will help!
I wouldn't buy Android if it wasn't for customisation through roms...that's what makes Android special!

If we had not way to change roms, probably I had not bought an Android's phone.
I like to do it, i'm curious like every us!
Same as the answer i gave to the same question six months ago .
I want what i want not what you want on my phone .
Why is a question and therefore in the wrong forum .

Just a few months ago I bought myself an iPod touch... I was thrilled with it! it was my first "real" mp3 player since my sony NW-HD5...
I Jailbreaked it... but it wasnt enough..
I waited to see how the iPhone 4S would come along.. and when it did I suddenly realized something..
People who buy Apple products are often ready to feel their products are outdated the next year...
Sure enough, Apple's hardware specs are "inferior" than most of the high end android devices.. but as we know their iOS is optimized to squeeze the most juice out of it.. until it gets unsupported...
So thats one of the main reasons I bought and Android phone, and customize it to its fullest... Today my hardware works.. OK.. but in the future, with better ROMS, more optimized to the specific hardware.. my device will be more alive than ever..
So basically... Apple devices just get worse with time... Instead.. Android can only get better.

most of the mods in your list can be achieved by jkay super awesome work. You dont need an entire rom for it. I can understand a kernel affecting battery life but how does a rom do it? (apart from swapping a few apks out?)

You can do all of the tweaks that you can think of without a custom ROM. But the beauty of using a ROM instead of doing it yourself is that you get a full package of what the developers could think of and all the feedback from the users. So its a base to proceed your modding from. You also don't have to deodex the ROM yourself for easier modding.
Regarding battery life, it comes from bloatware and excessive logging that has been removed. Often ROM makers will also replace some of the stock apps with more battery efficient ones. For instance swapping apps that through a bug keeps the phone awake.

I get bored with stock Android and I was looking for something new. Since SGS2 is still the best phone available, I flashed custom roms and I am sorry I didn't do that before - it is much better now.

i fail fo understand what do you find ****ty in a samsung rom?
yes they could have made it more customizable like sense but thats about it. All custom rom chefs do is customize the sammy rom more. look at the features
mms removed from logs - i am sure most of us dont want it but there are some who use it. Understand samsung is creating this to please everyone.
I can give more examples. Moral of the story is lets credit the super devs here but lets not take credit away from samsung. They have done a decent job with this phone in all departments.
good question
I use custom roms on my SGS2 simple because I can...

[Q] Most Stable ROM?

EDIT: MODS don't take this as a best thread ROM please, im not willing to ask this due to everyone having his own experience and preferences, im asking for STABLE thank you hope you understand and if you are going to delete pm me on what is wrong so I can change it
Hello, I've just read the Best ROM post it, but I think im not asking the same as the best ROM
I actually want a ROM which is stable for my girlfriend, I have tested loads of roms out there, and in my opinion latest rom are the best because of new features but they can have problems in speed or bugs (which is obvious ^^ now its to your choice if you want to keep updating your rom or stick for a stable one some time)
Everyone has his favourite rom and for X reasons, I'm not asking this...
I want a stable rom for someone who doesn't want problems with his phone (sometimes I think to only reflash and leave it like that so she doesnt wine)
Im actually thinking about few roms..
1. MSGINGER4.0 (I used this rom for about a month and I didn't find any bugs and excellent battery +720p, just the problem about 2g/3g toogle which in gingerbread is impossible to make it work + cm7 settings not working make it very little customizable - for ex. disabling in notifications the bluetooth which some people never use)
2. CM7 ROM: I know there are many out there, I've tried skanwich ones and Quarx on the good old days, I think its very stable but it has a higher battery drain than the msginger4.0 but maybe its worth it for the customization
about POINT 2 I would like to get some feedback, I've been reading WhiteRabbit 1.8 edition and maniacs build, I find them very interesting but I would like to know your views after testing them, some people report bugs and this is the last thing my gf wants XD ¿could you guys tell me more about these 2 roms and why they are more stable or less than cm7 skanky?
3. MIUI? Good interface 0 bugs from my experience BUT highest battery drain out there
I know I should test myself and see, but I did that with cm10 2nd boot last quarx build (tested for 4 days).. It was the most stable rom + the best features (since it was latest build) and I decide it to put it on my GF defy... after 1 week I got the ext4 bug (didn't boot, my fault for formatting to ext4 since it was a experimental feature) so I went back to another rom but now my GF has commonly force close, freezes and data connectivity drops
SO... Don't take this a thread of what is the best build out there please, since I'm not asking for this.. Im asking for a stable rom for someone who doesn't like playing with this kind of stuff
P.D: Don't take anything I've said about all the roms badly please, I love them all and it has been my experience with them and I know maybe you have different views due to different experiences.. (I didn't believe 2 exact phones could give different bugs since I had 2 but this actually happen)
so, what is the most stable ROM out there? (thinking also about battery performance + features (this last one must be the least important when telling me your opinion ^^ thank you!))
30 views and nobody could give a short awnser
I have tried a lot of roms (CM,MIUI..etc)on my phone and there is always that one moment in the day when i feel like having the stock rom back . Unfortunately i cannot go back to the stock rom even if i wished too since i blindly flashed defy+ rom on my defy and there is no way to downgrade from BL7. Mobile companies spend a lot of money in R&D while preparing the stock rom keeping in mind a variety of users . Believe me a lot of people i know give me confused looks when i ask them if their phones are "rooted.". Thus mobile companies try to strike a balance between noob and the tech savy users and by no means are stock roms useless (yes some find them bloated) . I respect all developers for their knowledge and work and it is only because of communities like XDA can i run a JB based rom on my defy ( almost a dream) . If you are looking for a bug free rom with a good battery life i would suggest sticking to the rom that came along with the phone .
mariosanoguera, I read your assertion that this is not a "best ROM" thread, but the fact is it's close enough. The point behind that rule is to avoid debate about which ROM is good at anything....whether than be "most stable", "best for messaging", or whatever. What you're asking will cause a variety of responses, then one poster will disagree with another, then controversy starts, then arguments, and on and on. The admins of XDA have been doing this a long time, and you're not the first person to start a "best ROM" thread while trying their hardest to make it sound like it's not a "best ROM" thread. They will always be closed and always have been, and for good reason.
So please don't take this personally. This is a development-oriented site and we do whatever we can to foster an environment that promotes development. Threads which try to determine which developer's work is better than another's never turn out well, and therefore are never allowed, without exception.

[Q] HTC HD2 - Rom.... stuck on choice!

Hey guys and girls,
Firstly, 2 apologies. 1. I am new the scene and apologise for my limited knowledge and ignorance. 2. i tried posting this in a different part of the forum and wasnt allowed.
I have a HTC HD2 and have been running Jellybean 4.2..... The ROM itself is great, however the phone is too slow and far too laggy for my needs.
I use social networking and text apps more than anything else and the transition from one app to another and the time it takes to refresh an app such as facebook is crazy. Not to mention the battery life is shocking.
I know there are several Rom's available and i just tried installing (succesfully) ICS on a Native basis, only to realise, i cant install apps directly to the SD card, so that throws that option out of the bag... which is a shame because it appears a lot faster than JB.
Can i have some input here please? I can search all day long but if i dont understand half of what i read, it seems pointless.
Many thanks in advance.
Wayne
There is no best ROM that will suit you. I suggest flashing a few different ROMs (some ICS, some JB, maybe even a GB ROM) and figuring out which one's best for you.

Your current ROM

We all know that Devs put a lot of effort and time on their project's. therefore their creation is often constantly changing.
I literally flash and test all the roms along with those major changes that Devs bring.
My current device is n910t.
I lke to note that i never sell my older devices, when i retire them i pass them down to friends and family. And before i do that, i make sure that the device has the most stable rom.
Devs put a lot of time and energy into this, and want to thank all of them for giving me something that i like and enjoy.
This is for users like myself, that consider this a passion or a hobby, and want to leave a quick and short opinion to what's best for them at the moment.
Hopefully that will help other users to make a quick decision on trying a rom without going to a thread and annoying the OP with questions like "how is battery life" or often directly or indirectly, comparing one OP's work with others in their own thread.
No matter how many roms i try, something that I love doing is to read all the threads and specially hearing the addicted flashaholics talk about anything, or the veterans with all their wise answers helping everybody
I know talking about roms in general in a single thread, is walking a fine line on the rules, in this forum. But, if we are educated enough, or at least try to be nice and respectful to each other, and specially to the devs and their work, we probably can keep this thread open and interesting, like it's meant to be.
I spend a lot of time testing touchwiz roms and lately aosp ones to.
If you asked me as far back as one week ago which one you think is the best and worth the daily driver for the moment, my answer would have been completely different than now.
I am unbiased, and that i guarantee, but i have to admit that sometimes i speek a little to soon, without meaning anything bad, but that eventually defeats being unbiased, so i do sound bad when that happens.
You have to realize that there is actually a way to say what you like about a rom, without offending others.
I am not going to give my review or my current opinion about the best rom right now, but with everyone else i will talk and discuss along the way.
Interesting thread. Let's hope no one gets butthurt.

That would be cause a lot of them might of forgotten to take the midol this morning lol. People need to get a grip that people will like others better and may not like some things a dev does or how certain devs just blow you off when u have an issue. It not till everyone says the same that the devs says oh geez let me look into that. It sad what xda has come to but I give the op credit for stating his opinion.
Post the scores for each category. I think if you rate them on a bunch of categories and say which ones are best at which categories, it might be a good way to not make this thread be about the "best rom" otherwise it will be closed in no time.

If you are wandering about comments above, The OP has been modified and changed prior to this post.
All devs have personal preference and individual set of skill and time. Likewise, users with personal preference and time. Some get what is more stable, some get what they really want and find time to ask others, to fix and tweak, to make the rom more stable, customized. Sharing the end results with devs and users. In reality best rom I think is the one, oneself could make themselves. Each rom has pros and cons. Each user uses their device differently, so even pros and cons can shift from one user to the next. I myself find any kitkat roms more practical by design. A more efficient way to use the device visually, with features and settings more organized and faster to recognize icons visually rather reading the icons labels. Lollipop has some new unique features, seems faster and smoother performance wise, but on the most part priority seems to be the color of things. If we lived in a perfect world with no time, I wonder what the hybrid of kit Kat and lollipop would be, or if all devs were one team. I think the best rom would be to have all the possible features/customizations with on/off switches. But that would probably require a lot of time and memory space, to also not have one feature conflict with another. Interesting place. Appreciate all devs and users with useful information they share with others.
Right now i have a backup of pretty much all the roms out there. The one that i always have when i am working is poprock because of battery life and overall stability. At home i mostly have TeXoDUs because i love customizations and the looks of it. When driving or out with friends i have aosp CmRemix has been the go2 lately, love the speed and gets me out of TW world for a while
Went back to kitkat/Firekat with bioshock kernel. Ran tw lollipop since it's release and every rom had issues. Not any developers fault, just unfinished, unrefined product from Google. I had way too many issues with camera not focusing, unexplained heat, wake locks, crap battery life, signal problems with new modem, random app force closes, etc, etc.

Maybe be a little more patient? ? Give it a chance, play around get yourself used to LP and you will realize that it's not so bad. If the problems that you described were persistent, there wouldn't been so many roms and users making the switch.

Will give this a shot and report back. Have you tried other roms to? Or did you stick with this from beginning? By saying more about this rom, in my opinion you advertise the devs work, and there is nothing more the devs want. They don't sell their work, it is a gift for us, the good words and popularity of their rom is more valuable to them then anything else.

If i just wanted something decent and never look back, i would have done the same to. But the truth of the matter is that i love NEW even if that is something that is not perfect yet. I love CHANGE, i like being curious with every update out there, and love flashing.
Lol i remember myself when i first bought a computer and would spend countless hours on IRC or going for days exploring programs, downloading torrents, and shiitte load of viruses along with them. Factory reseting windows weekly, and repeating the same thing over and over.
now these days i have settled with wiping and flashing. To old for anything else

Nice, thnx man!
Don't forget RAPTURE by ib4bested, that's rock solid to, and very fest with the most minimal bloatware than any other rom out there
And i can tell you right now, if TEKXodus was a little more organized, and what i mean by that is that if he had al the mods and themes in one place, something similar like Brians rom DynamicPop, where he has incorporated a settings icon with all his mods and tweaks (CM has that to) and had a little less unnecessary bloatware, made it more compact. That would be a dream rom with twice the user base. He is always there with a lot more work and updates than anybody else, his rom has the speed the battery life and the customization all in one.
Let me give an example.
When i flash his rom all i wanna see is the speed and the looks that he has right now. Everything else including samsung, google, tmobile, optional aps (bloatware) lmt all themes sound app, tweaks, themed sms, pull down notification tweaks, status bar etc, all into one single icon as a user choice mods. Thats a lot of work i know, but thats something that he certainly doesn't lack.
This way he would give every single person what they exactly want. With one stone he would kill countless birds ))

What Custom ROM would you suggest for my needs?

So there's a myriad of ROMs out there for the SM-G900F. So far I've tried only CM13, and while I love the looks and feels of it I feel it isn't stable enough. I want a ROM that is small/clean, stable and fast with as few apps as possible (just enough for it to run properly). I don't want to flash every single ROM available (as I'm really bad at this and might destroy my phone in the process) just to test them out.
So I am asking on here, do you know of any ROM that is minimalistic, clean, fast and stable that would suit my needs? First and foremost I want my phone to work as a phone, but I want most features to work properly. Preferably recently updated too Fast and stable being priorities.
I am thankful for any advice I can get. Currently running my stock rom, but it's freaking 3.8gb big... O_O
Also; I am sorry if this is against the Forum Rules. I skimmed through them before posting and it does not seem to be a conflicting question and the search function will not answer my question as all threads with similar questions are personalized and outdated.
XtreStoLite although it is a bit old, it's still great. (All GS5 apps flawless and lite )
CM12 AOSP, lite (near stock but high customization )
Blisspop Have not tried it but heard it was great.
Galaxy Project, I am going to be flashing to this soon.
These are just a few off the top of my head, as always there are amazing people and rom makers on this form,
so just look around.
Try new kernels to get different functions (double tap to wake) or just for better battery (handle wakelocks...etc better) or faster (overclock gpu and cpu)
I'm also looking for some info on this because the Samsung Galaxy S 5 forums are a complete mess and very difficult to find info relating to ALL aspects of flashing, including rooting and recoveries! It never used to be like this.
So far I have tried these two roms and I'm now tired of the issues, lack of updates and fixes:
- Galaxy Project
- PhoenixROM
Both of the above are nice but the galaxy project has a known bug where you can't send SMS to legitimate international phone numbers such as +61xxxxxx using the default messaging app. So this was a waste of time for me
Phoenix ROM I've found that facebook integration with the phone has restricted contacts sync to the phone. I think this FB sync issue is due to the custom rom but repeated posts asking for comments / help has got nowhere.
Both of the above ROMs are laggy and slow down. There's no comment on this either. Pheonix ROM also doesn't continue playing music where it left off like the stock rom did. To explain further, I have the phone bluetooth with the car. I play music through the car from the phone. I stop the car / exit eg going to a shop. When I get back in the car, the music starts from the beginning of the 2 hour mp3. Pain in the bum. Phones shouldn't be a pain in the bum.
I don't want a ROM where I have to spend weeks customising it. This is boring.
I was going to check out Shohat ROM but reading the comments there's a bug with bluetooth audio streaming.
I'm too looking for a minimalistic (no bloatware!), clean, fast and stable ROM. Bonus would be extra enhancements to fix current problems. Not an easy task.
Just the fact that there's no response to my previous post shows the forums for the s5 is dead. Time to buy a new phone i think.
Shame really since htc development continued well after the phones were outdated.

Well this is a reply.... The S5 is still a great phone tho, but its your wallet.
And yea, some people make those question threads, but never reply unless they need help, or they screwed something up.
Either way, this is still a supported phone by many developers and staff. Enjoy your life.
As for a recommended ROM try Blisspop, if you want stock TW you could always go back to TGP.

Thanks for your help. The frustration is the lack of updates to ROMs when there's bugs. Lack of information. And difficulty in finding ROMs suitable.
I'll look up Blisspop, thanks.

TGP == The galaxy project.
Of course there are many Roms that I have not mentioned, also if you really want barebones android try cm 12, it's the closest to stock (AOSP) AFAIK. Just browse the forms.

Ah ok thanks. TGP is too buggy and laggy for me, similar to PhoenixROM. I do prefer touchwhiz though.
Currently using OmegaROM. It's fast and smooth. little customisations so thats good. I thought NFC was not working, but it turns out bluetooth being on and connected to my smartwatch was causing NFC not to work.
Facebook contacts sync still not working in this ROM though. Contacts sync works with Stock Samsung roms, but no others apparently. . Facebook has blocked contacts sync, not sure why.
