OK guys- here is my issue. I have 4.1.2 and I am rooted. Should I use motopacolypse and unlock first? I can not upgrade to the new kit kat- it fails during install as of right now. I imagine because I am rooted? All the recoveries I have seen are for stock kitkat only. A little help is much appreciated.
I don't think motoapocalypse works with 4 1 2 does it?

Nope, I think it was 4.1.1.
What is your system version? You can update to 4.4, root, and unlock.

Apparently I'm a new user so I can't post links. It's okay though because Google is your friend.
Yes, you can. I just did it on my phone. (I bought a new one from Amazon a few days ago.) I started in Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (System version 98.30.1).
Here are the steps I took to unlock my bootlader. Most of this is duplicated from other forum posts.
Download and install RSD Lite.
Enable USB debugging on my phone.
Download whatever Motorola drivers and things and Android SDK. (This might not be important for some of this, but I also do it just to be sure.) I downloaded the SDK with Eclipse included because the download button was bigger. I'm sure any of them would work.
Download the 4.4.2 ROM. I heard that you have to use version 183.46.10. I WOULD NOT use any newer version.
Extract zip file.
Open the .xml file and delete all lines that mention "var" or "oem". There were 3 lines for me. Save the file.
Open RSD Lite and browse to the edited .xml file.
Click "Start". It should start flashing 4.4.2 onto your phone. Don't do anything dumb like unplug it if the battery's about to die.
Once your phone boots up, enable developer options (press the build number in "About Phone" a bunch of times).
Enable USB debugging. If a prompt comes up tell your phone to always allow your computer.
Download and install towelroot. You probably have to tell your phone to allow you to install apps from other sources. All kinds of security warnings will come up. Ignore them. Live life on the edge.
Run towelroot and root your phone.
Download the motopocalypse apk file. (I couldn't get the computer based one to play nice for me.)
Install and run motopocalypse. I pushed the unlock button a bunch of times. You probably don't need to do this, but it is satisfying. You'll probably also be asked to give motopocalypse root access.
You can double check that your phone is unlocked with Fastboot.

Could you elaborate on how you updated to 4.4? My bootloader is unlocked with cwm recovery installed. Im assuming I need to revert to stock recovery?
I am completely stock and haven't gotten it yet.
ok here ya go
so since no one else answered yet. go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2452246
and grab the system dump but dont follow his instructions they didnt work for me. if you keep reading thorough it you will find all you need to do is download the system dump and place it in the root of your storage. after that give the phone a reboot and click check for updates. it will find it and ask you if u want it moved and installed and will do it for you.

I would stay away. Everything I've read on the other thread points to you will soft or hard brick the phone. It basically needs to be stock everything, and possibly locked bootloader, for this to work and not brick. I might be a bit off, but I do know that those who are stock and locked haven't seemed to have any issues.
For all of you still waiting, I just had the following chat with a Sprint Rep:
Ciera B.: Hi
You: Hi, I have a Sprint Motorola Moto X and the I know that an update to the Android Software is being pushed out since last week
You: Would you know how long it might take for it to show up on my phone?
Ciera B.: A software update to 13.11.3Q2.X-69-3-8 will roll out for the Motorola Moto X (XT1056) beginning Thursday, 12/12/13 for 1000 users.
Full Client and Network Initiated Updates begin Wednesday, 12/18/13.
You: Does that mean that by tomorrow everybody should have it?
Ciera B.: All Moto X users will get it beginning Wednesday, 12/18/13.
You: So from 12/12 through 12/18 only 1000 users, the rest are getting it from 12/18?
Ciera B.: Right
You: thanx!!
Ciera B.: You're welcome.
Ciera B.: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Ciera B.: Thank you. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to you !

Unlocked bootloader is fine you just need to flash the camera update via toolkit to restore stock recovery then put the 44 update on the root of your card and check for updates so it updates the phone then you flash twrp or cwm and apply root again

Thanks for posting this! I was unable to update to Lollipop over Wifi/OTA. AT&T was of no help, the Samsung rep at Best Buy just looked confused when I asked if they could flash my phone (He said he'd download the latest version, but didn't think 5.x would be available yet). I had ever used Odin before, but installation was easy, and my phone seems much faster. Battery life seems a little worse tho.

This thread is an extension to that where it removes kingsroot and applies SuperSU

I got it to. I honestly may never root my phone again. I had so much trouble getting back to stock. Now instead of it saying "Locked" in download mode, it says "Re-locked" which I hope doesn't affect my chances to update to 6.0. But I did get the same update yesterday as well.
if you can update normally you can always use RUU
If not that I will upload fresh working rom for you

Since you're rooted, I'm assuming you probably have a custom recovery like TWRP installed.
Any official update (OTA) will work only with a stock Android recovery installed.
This means no, you cannot have an OTA update once you root. However, there is a thread on this forum somewhere which has a very reliable but slightly complicated method of getting OTA updates even of rooted.
You may refer to that. And ya, welcome to the XDA family!
