Xiaomi MiPad – Review
Xiaomi is one of those brands that is always in the headlines. As time has gone by the phone maker has expanded their device lineup and also started a massive global expansion. In addition to their phones, their MIUI software is also well known and sought after. Why all the hype around this company you might ask. Well, it might have something to do with the fact that they release high spec, dependable devices at less than half the price of the big brands.
Over the last year or two there have been rumors of a Xiaomi tablet but it just never happened. Then out of the blue the MiPad was announced and soon hit the stores. Obviously Apple inspired the MiPad looks like an iPad mini but is all Android inside thanks to the MIUI ROM. I was curious about the tablet but also curious about the Nvidia K1 processor so I figured I could kill two birds with one stone. So let the review begin.
Unboxing
I ordered the Xiaomi MiPad from 1949deal and the tablet was shipped within a few days by EMS. When it arrived it was very well packaged.
The box for the MiPad is of a plain brown variety. While it’s nice to see cool packaging for a device I really don’t care when it’s not there. It’s the device that needs to be amazing not the box, right? Inside was the tablet, some instructions, a micro USB cable, and a wall charger.
You can check out the unboxing video here.
Specs
7.9″ 2048 x 1536 display
Nvidia K1 quad core clocked at 2.2 Ghz
2GB RAM
16 GB storage
expansion slot that will support up to 128GB cards
5MP front and 8 MP rear cameras
6700 mAh battery
You can check out the full video review here.
Physical Features
The Xiaomi MiPad measures 202 x 135.4 x 8.5 mm and weights 360 grams. It’s quite comfortable to hold due to it’s thin design but you do need to be careful when holding it. The back of the device is very smooth and I could easily see it’s slippery surface being the cause of the device hitting the floor.
On the bottom is the micro USB port.
On the right is the volume rocker and the power button.
On the top is the 3.5 mm head set jack.
The top center is the location of the front facing camera.
Looking at the back the camera is in the top left corner with the dual speakers being at the bottom.
Display
The 7.9 inch display of the MiPad has a resolution of 2048 x 1536 for a 324 ppi pixel density. The screen feels solid thanks to the Gorilla Glass 3 and is very responsive.
The viewing is equally as good as the angles are good and the picture quality is fantastic.
Software
The Xiaomi MiPad is using MIUI which is their version of a custom Android ROM. It’s based on 4.4.2 KitKat and offers an appearance much like iOS where the apps are all dropped onto the main screens. Included are lots of customization options but if you still don’t like the look you can always use a launcher from Google Play.
Looks aside the software is stable and runs very well. The only drwback I’ve found is the Wi-Fi drains the battery fairly quickly even when the device is sleeping. The only fix I have found is to change the Wi-Fi setting to only engage when the device is awake.
Google Play store came on my device but that was put there by the reseller. Regardless, it’s an easy fix as you can just use the included app store to search Google and install the Play Store. When it asks to install other files like frame work, allow it and you’ll be all set in a matter of minutes.
The boot time was 25 seconds.
Wi-Fi
The MiPad comes with dual band wi-fi. I tested both the 5 Ghz and 2.4 Ghz.
My house has a basement and a main level. The router is located at the center point of the basement so I took readings at the router as a baseline and then tested it’s range by venturing upstairs.
5 Ghz
Router= 72.7 mbps
On the basement level the results remained around 70 mbps.
Main level= 10.06 mbps ( As I worked my way toward the far side of the level the signal dissapeared completely)
2.4 Ghz
Router= 68.05 mbps
Main level above the router= 20.58 mbps
Far corner of the main level = 19.7 mbps
As you can see, the Wi-Fi for the Xiaomi MiPad is quite good and the 2.4 Ghz signal easily covered my entire house.
Speakers
The dual rear speakers on the MiPad are perfectly located right on the curvature of the tablet. This makes them harder to muffle when holding the tablet sideways watching movies or playing games but allows the user to put it down without experiencing any problems with the sound.
Overall I was very impressed with the sound quality as the speakers were very clear and reasonably loud. They performed well with all genres of music and picked up a good amount of bass without sounding muddy.
Video Playback
The GPU in the Nvidia K1 is a real powerhouse allowing it to perform well in any situation, video playback included. I used the stock player as well as VLC to try a variety of HD online video clips as well as HD movies in different formats. Everything played very well and combined with the excellent display and quality speakers watching media on the tablet was a great experience.
Web Browsing
I used Maxthon browser to test out surfing the web and everything went very well. Pages loaded quickly even if they were image heavy and overall the device was quite snappy when online. It seems like the Nvidia K1 is the real deal.
Cameras
The front facing camera on the Xiaomi MiPad is a 5 MP unit and works very nicely for video chatting as well as taking quality selfies. The rear 8MP camera really impressed me. In general I’ve found the cameras that are used for tablets are rather poor so I wasn’t expecting much. The main camera focused fairly quickly and took some rather nice shots. The only downside is there is no flash, so make sure you have lots of light.
Benchmarks
Nvidia talked a big game regarding their new K1 processor so let’s have a look and see if it really is a threat to the current market technology.
Antutu
38,080
Antutu 5
It appears to be at the upper range of the current devices. Let’s keep testing.
Nenamark 2
59.7 fps
CPU Prime
8994
Very nice score. The MiPad is the first device I’ve personally come across that beats the Nvidia Shield in this test.
Vellamo
The MiPad thanks to its Nvidia K1 gets top marks in all tests. If you are looking for a powerhouse device the Xiaomi MiPad gets the nod.
Battery
The big question about the Nvidia K1 is how much does it take out of the battery to get those awesome benchmarks. I put the tablet display on auto and used VLC player to create a video loop. The tablet lasted a respectable 8 hrs 23 minutes. Performance and efficiency. Very nice.
Gaming
Nvidia heavily promoted the GPU on the K1 so one would hope it performs well in the gaming tests. I started with Into the dead and gameplay was very responsive and smooth. As I upped the ante by loading Dead Trigger 2 the graphics defaulted to the highest settings and gameplay was very nice. same scenario with Asphalt 8. I even opened a bunch of apps to run in the back ground and everything remained buttery smooth. If you like your video games, the Xiaomi MiPad delivers.
Final thoughts
Pro’s
Quality device
Good display
Great performance
Good speakers
Cameras are better than expected
Cons
Battery drain when in sleep (caused by Wi-Fi), hopefully this will be fixed in future software updates
No flash on main camera
I can’t really find fault with much on the Xiaomi MiPad. It really is a quality tablet that delivers on performance. The Nvidia K1 does a great job and makes this device one of, if not THE tablet to beat. I like that Xiaomi included an expansion slot and that it will take up to a 128 GB card. Add in the fact that Xiaomi are getting to be one of the larger players in the mobile game so you get software updates, lots of accessories, and tons of forum support if you need it.
Bottom line: reasonable price for killer performance.

Thanks for a great review, hopefully I'll have my hands on one in the next couple of weeks

Not a problem. It really is a nice tablet that will get better with further MIUI updates.

wow, the review is very impressive, i like to have a try!

There are some bugs come with this Mipad.
The tablet always get warm and the battery drain by "Android system".
The screen is good but the ratio cause some errors with some app.
And with 2K screen, it get only 2G memory. That's not enough.
The MIUI OS is buggy, I hope someday there will be CM11 for Mipad.

The MiPad is really awesome, however we the users have complained a lot in Xiaomi forums. The software was buggy from the very beginning, unfinished at its best, and while now most of the problems are solved, the MIUI version it runs is far from complete, not comparable at all to the phone version.
Hope some developer stands up and ports AOSP to MiPad, since most of us have the feeling that with MIUI it's impossible to use the tablet to its full potential.

great review ;;I wanna this mipad on my hands,,,,

Is there a custom ROM like CyanogenMod for this device. Im planning on buying this. It'd be nice to have Lollipop on this.
The hardware specs on this is similar to Nexus 9 but cheaper. Many good reviews about this device.

Is there any forum which speaks about Mi Tab- usage how tos - i tried to use shareit app to share files - but Mi tab does not allow. Please assist.

I know this isn't the right place but not sure where else to ask but while playing asphalt my car keeps veering to the left. I presume it's a problem with the gyroscope but don't know how to calibrate it. I tried several apps but didn't manage

Nexus S 1st day report from N1 owner - 2nd report up

2nd Report here 12/19/10: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9939308&postcount=43
Hi, I know many of you are considering or at least curious about the Nexus S. Admittedly one day is hardly any time to play with a phone properly, I don't even think a week is enough, but here are some things that I would like to point out.
1) Screen is beautiful. I can't even explain how good it is. I've played with a friend's fascinate before, and playing with it vs having it for a whole day are 2 different things. I've had my N1 with me the whole time and I have to say the screen is just a night and day difference.
2) I've not noticed *any* speed increase in any possible way on this phone. I use Enom's ROM on my N1 which as you know is a stock based ROM, with Launcher Pro, and nothing is faster on the NS as far as I've noticed. Going from app to app, going to home screen, swiping between home screens. Which may be moot because nothing opens "slow" on my N1 that I've ever had a problem with.
3) Browser has not improved a BIT! I was thinking with the hummingbird processor and the amazing GPU that the NS has that there would be significant improvement in browsing. None whatsoever. Pages don't load any faster than on my N1, and more disturbingly Flash content also doesn't work ANY better. On high quality flash content, it still chugs just as much as the N1 does. This is the main reason why my phone may be going back before the 30 days are up.
4) NoLed is a life saver, but it's no replacement for trackball notifications.
5) Battery life and signal strength do seem to be a bit better on the NS.
6) GPS doesn't have any problems as far as I can tell. I've used it twice today and it's obtained a lock in the same amount of time the N1 takes.
7) Tried 2 games, dot2 and angry birds. AB seems to run a little smoother on the NS, dot2 seems to run worse :S
Overall, the lack of any real performance increase (save for the app drawer, which is the ONLY place I've noticed it), I'm most likely going to return the phone to Best Buy and just get it used when it's a lot cheaper on craigslist.
I hope this information is helpful.
Man, I was really hoping the NS browser would be better. Having Flash content on Android is great, but still has its issues.
How much better is the multi-touch? Thats my main complaint with the N1. I get a lot of miss touches and double hits, especially when using the kb at times.
BTW, could you post some shots of the N1 and MS screens side by side, or maybe a video of them running the same apps where you see increased performance on one or the other?

Flash still has desktop issues, how would it ever get good performance on a 4" inch device. (For example, a certain Wendy's Advert makes my cursor blink in an annoying fashion until I close that page) Flash is just lucky the alternatives are not nearly developed enough.
I have a feeling Google is going to regret the Nexus S after they see the LG Optimus X2. There is just no reason to buy a Nexus S when you could have had a dual core, better GPU based phone.
I think flash being slow has mostly to do with adobes crappy flash not htc or samsung. And I find it hard to believe there is no performance increase. This is by far the fastest / best android phone to get. Not sure if it's worth the upgrade for me being a vibrant owner.
Guys... if you have done any research u should know that the GPU in the Galaxy S phones is faster than the GPU in the LG Optimus X2...
If anyone is on the fence about this or waiting for Tegra 2, Flash works amazingly on the Viewsonic gtab with Tegra 2. Despite the fact that the device is very young and unoptimised it plays every flash video I have thrown at it perfectly smooth. Even fast paced action videos like surfing and downhill mountain biking. Full screen or embedded in the webpage at any zoom level and at higher resolution than the Nexus S too (1024x600).
The same flash videos play at about 12fps on the Nexus One and Captivate. The Captivate with JPU rom is a little faster and smoother at everything else at the moment though.
The browser in Galaxy S JPU rom seems far smoother than the one on the Nexus S from all the videos I've seen. Strange they haven't ported the improvements over to it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the browser on the gTablet isn't any better than the N1 aside from Flash.

You should remember that not all the apps/games have had the chance to incorporate all the new APIs yet. The devs need to update their apps first.
Thanks for the hands on summary. Wouldn't blame U if deciding to take it back...
the nexus s sounds totally like something i should skip
heck ... i imagine later on xda would get most all the Ns googles into all the galaxy line up except NFC ...
Watching Amazon Video on Demand with my N1 was always choppy. Watching it on my OCed G2 is actually pretty smooth most of the time.
Here are some hard facts about NexusS performance:

I like to skip one generation at a time. To me the nexus s didn't advance far enough for me to abandon the 1. Besides. Mine is in flawless condition (although its my 3rd)

by a slim margine but the benefits of a dual core far exceed a single core along with SD slot and should be on 4g.

The multitouch is perfect. I've used the "yet another multi touch" testing app and it can notice 5-6 touch points (from what I've tried) and not have any problem distinguishing them or mixing them up during movement.
There really is no need for me to post any video of anything because like I said, except for the app drawer, I haven't noticed ANY performance increase in the phone.

Great link, man. It's nice to see the numbers like that. I think any individual test doesn't mean a whole lot, but looking at them in total... I'm glad I didn't get the S lol.
Your results from flash are pretty disheartening.
Can you try www.engadget.com/video ? Are there really no performance differences?

Hmm, you might not notice it, but that doesn't mean the performance increase isn't there necessarily. Perhaps it's subtle, or perhaps some apps take advantage and some don't.

GLBenchmark 2.0 Released - Modern SoCs Benchmarked
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4064/glbenchmark-20-released-modern-socs-benchmarked

We're constantly on the lookout for new benchmarks to use for benchmarking the latest SoCs in devices. Today, Kishonti Informatics released GLBenchmark 2.0, the latest version of its popular GLBenchmark suite for measuring 3D graphics performance across a host of platforms: iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile, and Maemo. We've been testing it out for a while now and have some numbers of our own and from the community results. The end result is yet another look at how 3D performance stacks up between nearly all modern SoCs.
GLBenchmark 2.0 - as its name implies - tests OpenGL ES 2.0 performance on compatible devices. The suite includes two long benchmarking scenarios with a demanding combination of OpenGL ES 2.0 effects, and individual tests such as swap buffer speed (for determining the framerate cap), texture fill, triangle, and geometric tests. GLBenchmark 2.0 also leverages texture based and direct lighting, bump, environment, and radiance mapping, soft shadows, vertex shader based skinning, level of detail support, multi-pass deferred rendering, noise textures, and ETC1 texture compression.

We've been testing devices for a little while now and have a decent enough spread to make for some interesting comparison. The only extra consideration is that all of these were run at the device's respective native resolution. There's no way to change resolution, and likewise numbers cannot be scaled linearly because we may be memory bandwidth limited on some devices. GLBenchmark will join our benchmark suite for devices going forward.
First are the resolutions (native) of the devices themselves:
Code:
Device Resolutions - GLBenchmark Native Resolution
Google Nexus One 800x480 WVGA
LG Optimus One 320x480 HVGA
T-Mobile myTouch 4G 800x480 WVGA
Samsung Fascinate 800x480 WVGA
Google Nexus S 800x480 WVGA
HTC EVO 4G 800x480 WVGA
Apple iPhone 4 960x640 DVGA
Apple iPad 1024x768 XGA
Motorola Droid 854x480 FWVGA
T-Mobile G2 800x480 WVGA
Nokia N900 800x480 WVGA
Apple iPhone 3GS 320x480 HVGA
Thankfully, comparison across devices running Android is easy thanks to the relatively standard WVGA resolution guidelines for high end devices.
GLBenchmark 2.0 - Egypt:
GLBenchmark 2.0 - PRO:
The first benchmark, Egypt, tests OpenGL ES 2.0 and represents the newest and most demanding benchmark. The second - GLBenchmark PRO - represents a suite that tests OpenGL ES 1.1 performance. Moving forward we will report these whenever possible on smartphone reviews.
Gallery: GLBenchmark Scenes - Egypt and PRO
It's pretty apparent right now that PowerVR SGX 540 still holds the lead, though the new 45 nm Qualcomms with Adreno 205 are a huge jump forwards from Adreno 200 performance wise. It's interesting that it looks like we're GPU or memory bandwidth bound on those new Qualcomms, as evidenced by the similar results the myTouch 4G and G2 post despite a 200 MHz CPU clock disparity.
http://www.youtube.com/v/C61xvxsUcTY?fs=1&hl=en_US&rel=0&hd=1
Overall, GLBenchmark is designed to showcase some of the OpenGL ES 2.0 features that developers may potentially use in future gaming titles. There are a lot more low level tests which we'll be playing around with in the future and using to test in much more detail.

No I am sure that there are significant performance increases in terms of graphics for games and whatnot...but I'm saying that I haven't noticed any in daily use. Opening or closing apps, swiping between homescreens IS laggy once you put a lot of icons and stuff on there (unlike Launcher Pro..more on that next). Viewing websites, typing, scrolling is a little smoother in some places and some places it's the same...
Interestingly, once I installed launcher pro, the home screen swiping is now back to being as smooth as should be, but the app drawer on Launcher Pro is MORE laggy than it is on the N1 lol. If there was a way that when u hit the app drawer, LauncherPro would open the stock app drawer which is extremely buttery smooth, that would be awesome.

What are your thoughts on this? If we're GPU-bound, dual core Snapdragon's won't help much. If it's a memory issue...is that solvable with the Adreno 205? I don't the S as a decent upgrade (despite some advantages, which I admit exist). I was leaning towards the LG Star or the new Moto dual core, but I see some advantages to sticking with HTC and the Qualcomm chip sets. (First, I've only used HTC for the last 5 years, despite purchasing other handsets for family/backup. Second, I was told the Snapdragon is held back by the GPU, and actually posts better FPU than the Hummingbird. Now that the 205s are present, I was seriously considering waiting for a dual core HTC device...)
Anyway, let me ask it this way, as this is the bottom line for a lot of us (though feel free to address any of the technical specs and reasons why): Which manufacturer do you think is better suited to kick out a killer device over the next 4 to 6 months? Is it Samsung, should they go dual core Hummingbird? (and we'll leave cheap plastic out of it, speaking only of internals and performance.) Do you feel it would be HTC with dual core Snapdragons and the 205s? LG with the Nvidia Tegra2 (unsure of their GPU and respective performance)? Moto? Someone else?

[Q] Which Win 8 Pro Tablet/Laptop Hybrid?

First off, I apologize if this has been asked, I could only find a relevant thread about RT versions. Also, I was not sure if this should be posted in the Windows 8 general forum or the Microsoft Surface forum (I figured it was only for the Surface, not all tablets), and if I placed this in the wrong place, please delete it.
So on to my question: does anyone have a suggestion as to which Windows 8 Pro Tablet/Laptop hybrid to get? I would be using it to replace my old laptop: I'd like to do the standard stuff (watch videos, browse the web, etc), use it for notes in class, play the occasional game (nothing serious, probably just WoW, the real gaming I do on my desktop), and code in Visual Studio. I definitely want one that comes apart, like the Asus Transformers, so I'm not even considering sliders or all-in-ones.
I've read a bit about some of the tablets, but I honestly have no idea which one to get when they come out. I wanted the Microsoft Surface, but the kickstand instead of solid base kinda kills it for me (I want to be able to type with it on my lap), and I just can't weigh the pros and cons of the other tablets. I love the build quality of Asus, but I've heard bad things about atom processors. Samsung has an i5 version, but I'm not so sure about the build quality (I've never cared for plasticy laptops). I know the Samsung has 4GB of RAM, and I heard Asus has only 2GB (which would be abysmal, if they don't offer higher that will probably make my decision for me). I don't want to go anywhere near Lenovo, and I haven't heard much about any other brand (where are the specs for HP, Dell, Sony?).
So unless I'm missing something, I'm looking at the Microsoft Surface if I suck it up and embrace the kickstand, the Asus Vivo or the Samsung Ativ. The Asus will probably have better battery life, but the Samsung will (I believe) be far more powerful. Battery life isn't that big a deal to me as long as it can last around 6 hours or so on a charge (side note: do the docks have batteries in them like in the Transformers?), and I don't really know how the atom fares for what I want it to do. I know there is more to be seen from the other companies, but I have heard little about HP and Dell, and I don't like the design of the Sony Vaio Duo 11. Not to mention I don't want to wait for several months for the Surface or any other tablet coming out later (my laptop is really starting to crap out... Thanks "best friend" for convincing me to get a Macbook Pro a few years ago ).
So anyway, my mind is all over the place and I really have no idea what to get. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Sorry if it seemed like I was rambling, I just really can't put all the factors together to make a decision.

What do you have against Lenovo? They make very good hardware, even if the design leaves something to be desired. But in your situation it might be ideal. The digitizer would help you with note taking, although I'm not sure how the Clover Trail processor will hold up to WoW or Visual Studio. I'm personally going to get one as a netbook replacement. Might be worth a look for you.
Yea I was going to say, right now its a decision between the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet 2 and the Microsoft Surface.
The Thinkpad has a keyboard that can support the weight or the screen, active digitizer, legacy application support among others. The Surface RT is lighter, will probably be cheaper and comes preinstalled with onenote.
Had the Surface RT come with a digitizer I would have been all over that.
Thanks a ton for the replies. I guess I've just heard a lot of bad things about Lenovo from friends, I'll look into it though. And I guess I'll have to wait for them to come out to see how well the processors fair, I think I'll end up going with an i3 or i5, but if the others aren't too far behind I may go for them instead for a cheaper price and longer battery.
Get a tf book...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
I hadn't heard of the tf book, but now that I've looked at it it really seems like a contender. Do you have any idea when it's going to be released?
I am in very similar situation to yours.
I am trying to follow information regarding upcoming devices. I used to have Asus 1201N (Atom [2 core] 330 + ION platform) and was very happy with size, weight, screen, performance. I do web/mail browsing, movies (downloaded or streamed) plus quite a lot of writing for some websites.
I got rid of it because it was very hot device with warm/hot air constantly blowing out of it. I swapped it for an iPad bo it is just a toy not someting I can use to work.
So... in my case I am looking for:
approx 11" device (10 is definitely to small to work... 12" not mobile enough - tablet itself would be to big)
I think I will go with Atom. I dot suppose it will be worse than current range of Atoms... if I can get smooth playback of 720p mkv out of it I am settled.
One more issue I see regarding i3 and i5 CPU's are battery life and heating. From what I have seen hybrid devices with iCore processors will have an active cooling system (fan) unlike ARM and Atom based devices
Screen resolution - 1366 x 768 not more. Why not Full HD screen? Two reasons.
1. Atom could struggle in this resolution.
2. Since all I watch (I do not have a TV - no time) on this device will be either downloaded or streamed Full HD screen will make those films look bad when compared to HD ready resolution
decent battery life, reasonable weight of the tablet part of the device (if I can stay around iPad 1 weight it would be cool)
As for now my focus goes with 2 devices: Asus 810 and Samsung Smart PC (PC Pro will have iCore CPU).
Have a look a this...

It seems that we'll have an assortment of models, but are prices mentioned somewhere? All I've seen its the Vaio Duo with a price tag of $1200 and all I can shell out is two thirds of that.

my cube iWork 10 chinese win 8.1 tabet review

I was fortunate enough to be able to buy and test the new Acube iWork 10, a Chinese windows 8.1 10.1" tablet. So here is my review on it if anyone is looking for a win 8.1 tablet at a very reasonable price.
Full Name Cube/ACube iwork 10 U100GT
Specs:
10.1-inch IPS capacitive touchscreen of 1280 x 800 px resolution;
1.8GHZ Intel Atom Bay-Trail Z3740D Quad-core Processor, Intel HD Graphic (Gen7) GPU
2GB of LPDDR3 RAM
Windows 8.1 (Need to be activated by the user themselves)
32GB of SSD built-in Storage
2MP front-facing camera/2MP rear-facing camera
Back-mounted stereo speakers
Wi-Fi 802.11
Bluetooth v4.0
USB 2.0 host (adapter required which does not come in the box)
Micro SD card slot
Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
HDMI V1.4
8,000mAh Li-Po battery
Pros:
- Very quick boot/ Shutdown. About 1.5 seconds!
- Price around $400 (with the case) shipped to Australia from sites like Ali Express
- Build quietly is amazing
- fast and responsive
- The Keyboard case (needs to be bought separately)
- Micro SD card slot
- Battery life- I got about 7-8 hours of usage from this with which is pretty awesome!
- size is impressive compared to other 10 inch windows tablets out there. 258 x 173 x 10.4 mm
- at 604g it is lighter then most windows 10.1 inch tablets out there including the surface tablets.
- Acube will be releasing a Android ROM soon so you can dual boot!!!!!
Cons:
- No USB 3
- No full size USB port
- No full size HDMI port
- 32 GB memory only!
- No use charging and charger seems like it can break pretty easily
- Win 8.1 Pro needs to be activated separately (some might come with it but mine did not)
Screen:
The IPS screen is pretty good, 1280 x 800 px resolution does well. and viewing angles are awesome!. good for watching movies, doing work etc.
build quietly and design:
The build quietly is better then expected feels solid in the had and really nice to use. design and size of the tablet is pretty awesome as well. Does not look cheap! at 604g it is lighter then most windows 10.1 inch tablets out there including the surface tablets. The tablet has a 2-megapixel front camera and 2-megapixel rear camera, both of which can take pictures or interact with Skype sessions. The tablet has accelerometers, G-sensor, and vibration feedback (particularly when you use the Start button), three features that are almost must-haves for this type of product.
Battery life:
The battery life could always be better but for the size I guess its pretty good. I got 7-8 hours on charge which pretty good and compared to laptops this was very welcome. only thing is it does take a while to charge.
The Keyboard case (sold separately)
The case is very well made and really easy to use. It connects to the tablet via a magnet like the surface tablets which I think is pretty cool. It works well, the only thing is the touch pad does not seem to have the gestures which i find annoying (even it it does they dont seem to work for me). the case also turns into a stand which is nice and very stable on a bed etc. I would defiantly recommend get the keyboard case because personally im not use to using windows without one and the windows on screen keyboard does not like to work well with firefox (no auto pop up and takes up most of the screen and this gets annoying very quickly!).
Price in Australian $: As I said above it is about $400 with the case from sites like Aliexpress but I am sure you can find it cheaper from other places.. the actual retail price is RMB1,699 ($281USD). So in saying that we can can compare it to the major brands.
Some points to note
- Pretty cheap for a 10.1" win 8.1 tablet even at $400 but then again you can get a ASUS Transformer Book T100 for around $500-$600 with double the storage space of 64gb with the same processor and specs
- 8 inch tablets like Asus Vivo Tab 8.0 or TOSHIBA Encore 8 for the $400 but then again they are 8inch which in my opinion are a bit small for windows.
Overall thoughts.
I am always weary (as you never know what to expect) about Chinese products yet I always seem to keep buying them and let me tell you they have been getting better and better day by day! I bought a Teclast p98 mini tablet running android and let me tell you it is awesome for the price i paid and running the intel chip. You can read that review i did here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2611057.
Price is a bit high for us in Australia if you get it from sites like Aliexpress but in saying when the dual boot android rom is released you will essentially get 2 tablets in one which I guess this worth it! the main disappointment was no full size USB which can get really annoying at times, specially when the adapter did not come in the box so that is an additional cost. Also you need to activate windows on your own but some might come with it (this you will have to confirm on your own).

Windows 8.1 Driver pack
I'm with one "No-Brand" U100GT for about 2 months. Finally find a kit with all extra drivers needed in one package. Now I've managed to install my Win 8.1 PT-BR version and got everything functional. The next step is search for a dual boot Win / Android solution. Bluestacks runs very slow on 3D games.
Just google "Cube iwork drivers" (I can't post links yet)
The installer is in chinese, but it's easy to guess where to click.
Click OK on the first dialog and wait.
It will unpack the drivers on a folder on the C:root and then run a bunch of .bat.
It's no need for reboot. You can delay it until the end of the install.
You may want to archive the folder for easy re-installation.

Review
Introduction
This is the DIGGRO DI06
Part of the nowadays common rebrands, this DI06 from DIGGRO features the same hardware you would find on a low-end 3G smartphone, mostly for power-saving reasons. Together with the MT6580M chipset, there is only 1GB of RAM and 16GB of Storage, all packed in a Metal Chassis and an AMOLED screen, probably the most interesting feature of this device.
Unboxing
A pretty basic set of accessories in included in the package: 1x Charging Dock, 1x Micro-USB Cable, 1x Screwdriver, 1x Kit of extra screws, 1x Manual and the Smartwatch (of course). Unfortunately there isn't any spare screen protector even though one is pre-applied.
The charging dock looks nice, but in reality it comes with a pretty important flaw: almost inexistent magnet. It only sticks to the back without holding the smartwatch in place, and the magnet is so weak that even the lightest movement would cause it to detach. A bit disappointing.
Design & Features
Something really premium about this device is the front glass. It is 2.5D curved and perfectly inserted in the metal chassis, similar to the implementation you get on a smartphone.
Quality-wise everything feels premium too thanks to the Metal Chassis. No imperfections noticed. Its weight is decent, only 63g, not much considering the material.
On the right side there is only one key that works as a back/power button, with a nice tactile feedback. Just below the key, there is a mini 2MP camera (i call it the Spy Camera considering the position) and the main microphone.
As regards the left side, there is only a grill (not bear...) for the speaker.
The whole back side is made of Plastic, with a removable cover for the SIM-Card Slot, the Heart-Rate Sensor and 4-pins for the Magnetic Dock. I was not able to notice any corrosion on the pins after ~1 month of usage.
Luckily, even though i do not like OLED screen too much, this model features an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 400x400 pixels. On a smartwatch this is a must feature for power-saving and real blacks, and i can confirm its quality. Also, it is really bright, but due its limited size i was not able to measure the lux value.
I have been testing lots of smartbands and smartwatches since i started to review tech. devices, and the band used on this device is actually pretty good. It attracts some dusts just like most rubber-bands, but it doesn't get dirty neither it causes the wrist to sweat/fell hot. Let's say a stress-free band. Unfortunately it isn't replaceable, or at least not with something generic since antennas are inside the band.
Software and Usage
Sadly, the software isn't "premium" at all. It runs on a heavily customized version of Android 5.1 with June 2016 security patches. Still, it runs really really smooth with no lags, something i wasn't expecting considering the custom OS.
In order to show you all customizations made to the OS, i made a video that, hopefully, is enough to provide an overview of what i am talking about. The video doesn't feature any voice, so you can mute it or just listen to the included music.
The OS recommends to install an app called "WiiWear" to sync all notifications with the device but it literally sucks, so, as recommended by the company itself, i switched to another app called "Watch Droid" that works perfectly, with no connectivity issues, plus, it allows to reply to messages with personalized templates.
V AVOID THIS APP! V
Instead, install this on your smartphone: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lumaticsoft.watchdroidphone
and this one on the smartwatch: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lumaticsoft.watchdroidassistant
Just some screenshots about the Watch Droid app and the Bluetooth Connection.
Something that impressed me is the built-in mini camera, it is made by SuperPix and provides some great photos considering the low resolution. Sure, it doesn't support auto-focus, but it is way better than most spy camera available on the market. Really impressive.
Here you can see some samples.
Finally, as regards the Battery Life, the 350mAh built-in battery doesn't help much, but at least i was able to reach 1 day and a half of usage without any SIM-Card inserted, but with both BT and WiFi turned on and no battery saving options active. With some software customizations it should be possible to reach at least two/three days of usage, coming later
Conclusion
I don't know how other models released by DIGGRO are so it hard to say whether this is an upgrade or not compared to a previously released model. This DI06 is a solid piece of hardware that requires some software improvements, or at least provide the Watch Droid app by default.
The AMOLED screen together with the impressive build quality definitely make it a step above others i tested, but it is still far from an Android Wear Smartwatch.
Honestly, i can recommend this smartwatch to those who can't spend the extra for an Android Wear model, just consider everything written above and keep following this thread for updates and possible improvements that i will provide. I promise to not abandon this model ^^.
Pros:
Excellent Build Quality
Bright AMOLED screen
Decent built-in Camera
High Quality Band
Cons:
Unpolished and not updated Software
Terrible Magnetic Dock
Slightly outdated hardware
Pricy (based on the official pricing)
Rating: 8.2
Packaging and Accessories: 6.5
Design and Materials: 10
Performance & Usage: 9.5
Screen: 9.5
Sound: 8
Battery Life: 7

I'm very surprised!
I have X3/K9 and in airplane mode with occasional time checking it lasts about 6-9 days. And 2-3 days with 3G on, but I mostly have it off.
But after 1-2 years with it I'm looking for new watch with AMOLED.
How long it stay in airplane mode?
5 hours at most...
Did you try to examine what is battery hog in Battery Usage History option in Settings?
Maybe it is some process or app?
App Scaling
Thanks for the review. I am actually using a similar watch (DI01). I installed the Watch Droid and it works very well. I have 2 questions for those who have similar watches.
1. The Watch droid actually draws over my clockface when i unlock the watch everytime which is annoying as I unlock to see the time.
2. How do you scale apps full screen. My apps appear as square boxes and tiny.

Hi,
I have the DI07 and the o/s looks like the same as mine. To go full screen hold the button to get the turn off option and at the very top you'll see a small white square. This is the option for letterbox or full screen. Tap that and you should get full screen on your watch
Awesome. That fixes one of my problems. Thanks.

So are there any similar (or better) spec to this full Android watches with decent battery life? What brought me here was the D101. Its form factor looked great.

The MOST important question EVER? Can we get AI Upscaling for 2015/2017 SHIELD TV's?

As the title states. We have been seeing just how incredible the new AI upscaling is on the newer 2019 models and I am wondering if we have any Developers here up for the challenge to bring this impressive feature to our original SHIELD TV models please? Below are just two of the reports on AI Upscaling.
Can it be done? Or is this impossible?

Yes me too. Wait I'm already rooted, haha. But yes lets bump this thread every week as much as we can please just to keep the title of this thread visible. I have never seen such a feature like this before. I want this bad, almost bad enough to sell it and get the newer device, which I'm sure is Nvidia's intention, lol. Well I hope they bring it to the earlier devices because my SHIELD TV's Geekbench scores are higher than the new Shield PRO's, thanks to the overclock kernel. It should have no issues, and neither should all the stock devices.
Hope someone will do it because the new shield pro is horrible 16gb of internal storage and no hdd/ssd.
Maybe some developer can port the 2019 rom to work on older 2017,2015....
Yeah Nvidia was smoking crack when they designed the new Shields. If they weren't planning on upping the ram and storage sizes they should have at least left them the same. They have pretty much guaranteed that I won't be upgrading to a new one. My 2015 model is looking better and better as it ages, lol.
With that said, with the new 2019 model having better newer software features I find myself wondering if the 2015/2017 has become EOL for software updates.
Hello everybody, I asked the same question here.
wxy.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/325195/ai-upscaling-on-shield-2017-possible/
The answer is unfortunately no.
Well Nvidia wants to sell the new shield yes and that would be for me the only reason to buy.
I hope it is possible with a costum rome also with the 2015/2017 model.
Is AI upscaling a pure software thing or is it only possible with the new Tegra chip?

Its probably nothing more than a software thing considering it is using NVIDIA servers to use the power of Cloud computing to do the heavy lifting. This AI feature probably would work on even the weakest of devices, so long your internet latency is low enough. With that said we need more info about the feature before passing judgment.

AFAIK you don't have to be online to use the AI upscaling. I've read somewhere that the shield is using a pre-trained model to do the upscaling, that is presumably delivered with nvidias software.
Would be strange if the upscaling wouldn't work without internet, and i can't imagine everyone streaming their videos to a server and back all the time.
Someone to port 2019 Rom to older version... The devices have the same base ..android 9 .The drivers are not the problem...For AI upscaling you no need to be online

That's my thoughts too, but NVIDIA is advertising it as AI Upscaling using the power of NVIDIA's own cloud computing servers. But I too have difficulty seeing that as the case. But then again, just about everything will eventually be moving to the cloud and there is nothing we can do to stop it. One day all our Operating Systems and Software will be run from the cloud. Its inevitable, especially after Quantum computing becomes a thing and fiber speeds are everywhere at a minimum, lol.

yes, but i'd just assume that their cloud computing servers were the ones that pre-trained the model, as that is what's so computationally intensive. The shield then just uses that model, and nvidia can still use the fancy new buzzwords for marketing!
But as i said, i don't know these things, they're just assumptions

My good friend just got his 2019 Pro today. He wants to figure out how to dump the entire OS image so someone can figure out if its something that can be ported over to our current devices. Meanwhile I'm going to ask him to test AI upscaling without an internet connection by using a 480p local file. I'm thinking 480 would be much earlier for him to notice the differences right away. Makes it easier to spot the scaling tech at work, if you know what I mean. The only reason he pre-ordered it was for this AI thing, lol.

Maybe some developer can port the 2019 rom to work on older 2017,2015....

if someone can find and upload the firmware ill definitely try
Hi
The up-scaling isn't that good or anything remarkable. I can achieve the same thing upping the sharpness and resolution enhancer controls on the TV to full, which I would never do as it just makes things look unrealistic.
I've turned it off and everything looks more natural and pleasing. Remember you can't add detail that isn't there in the first place. It's all an illusion to our brains that gives the impression it has more detail, but really it has less detail due the processing.
I really wouldn't worry about upgrading 2017 or 2015 Shield just for their "AI" upscaling, besides it only works on 30 frame per second content or less anyway, presumably because it is just a software function that they can't run fast enough for 60 fps, whereas all TVs have dedicated hardware silicon for their sharpening algorithms and cope fine up 60 fps.

Phil
Yeah this has been becoming apparent with the more reviews we have been seeing. Looks like the 2019 is more of a money grab than anything else. There's no way I would be upgrading to the 2019, just like I didn't upgrade to the 2017.
I have tried over a dozen different Android TV boxes in the last 5 years or so and the Shield TV comes in #1 with the absolute worst picture quality. It's video output is far far far too soft for me. I was just hoping it was finally fixed and had managed to catch up to the other SoC's. That's all. I already have my TV's sharpening filter at maximum to compensate for the shields crappy soft PQ.

They didn't even bother to change the case for the "new" Pro or anything. It's exactly the same as the old 2017 Shield, with maybe the exception of the Tegra X1+, which functionally runs at pretty much the same speed as the standard Tegra X1.
What Nvidia is essentially doing with this "upgrade" is charging everyone for the Dolby Vision license by making us buy the same exact hardware 2x!!! They knew their biggest customer request has been asking for Dolby Vision for years and was too cheap to offer it to us for free or at a nominal cost to the end-user.
To hell with the upscaling- it's all software based, and anyone who cares about PQ is going to play back video in native resolution with Kodi and let their TV handle it anyways. I'm much more interested in Dolby Vision (which is also all software based) and Dolby Atmos on Netflix (which Nvidia is purposely locking older Shield owners out of). If someone figures a way to rip the firmware off the 2019 models and get Dolby Vision working on the 2015/2017 Shields, I really don't care if I have to root my 2 Shields to do it. Frankly I'm pissed that Nvidia is forcing us to pay twice for essentially the same exact thing just to get something they could have easily offered as a software upgrade.
FYI- Yes, the Shield's PQ is awful- you're not going to get much improvement with any sharpening filter (AI or otherwise) if the base hardware output is crap. Since Nvidia hasn't appeared to change the 2019's hardware at all, you really can't expect much from it. Just buy a $30 S9xx Amlogic based Android box and install CoreELEC on it for Kodi. You can turn off the built in filtering and it looks AMAZING. You still get lossless audio, etc, etc. I might even spring for a S922x based box when they come down in price.
Hi
The AI upscaling isn't very good in my opinion, doesn't do anything you can't achieve by ramping up the sharpening controls on the TV panel, which we don't do as it just makes for an over-processed and fake looking image. We've turned it off and everything looks better for it. The marketing is the only thing that has worked with AI upscaling, and the demo slider looks good, but all that really demonstrates is what a lot of over-sharpening looks like!
It's all marketing.

This info has been well known for a long time about the shield tv's PQ, which is why I already went through more devices than I care to admit. But I wanted to find ONE box to rule them all as I only have 3 HDMI ports on my TV, one for the PC, one for the Sat box and one for the Android box. And none of the Amlogic based machines have the grunt snappiness that the Shield has, which is for me the most important of all the features. However, I was thinking of waiting for a S922X device myself just for our local content and youtube but I hate switching inputs constantly.
In order of importance for a single Android box
1. Performance, especially for Emulation gaming and overall snappiness.
2. Widevine L1, because most of my content comes from Netflix, Prime, Hulu and possibly Disney+ soon.
3. Picture Quality out of the box because my TV doesn't do a good job of upscaling on its own.
4. Android TV, because I ONLY use the Smart YouTube app so I have full control over the resolution, bitrates, codecs and adverts which in turns means I am looking for better PQ from my hundreds of subbed YT channels.
I'm hoping to see MINIX release a S922X streaming box (with L1 hopefully), that would be enough for me to try amlogic again, but I am certain it will under perform on other tasks. Like you said you really have to care about PQ to do something like that, and apparently I don't care that much because I'm willing to keep my 2015 shield because of its performance with everything else. I just got tired of the constant purchasing of amlogic devices only to be let down by the UI and gaming performance. Our 3rd gen MiBox in the living room will be my last S9xx device I believe. And for my bedroom I do not see my Shield TV leaving for quite some time unless someone else surprises us with a must have device, or I do a DIY build using the Snapdragon 855 (dead screened 2019 phone) and my brothers incredible 3D printer for a custom Android TV case. Lol
Just to say, a good trained ia can realy be powerfull to bring out detail from a low resolution picture.
Some time ago i processed all the ff7 graphic with an ia named esrgan and here's a sample:

As you can see it's not an advanced sharpen at all, it's much more powerfull
