[SOLVED][Q] battery charging problem - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Solved. The surgery went fine, actually just unplug/replug the battery
and now tablet is charging fine, but only when on. If I turn it off and plug the power cable
I have the onscreen b&w animation of a charging battery but not even 1% increase over the night.
Might consider finding a replacement sooner or later.
=============================
Hi every body
My nexus behaves strangely regarding battery charging, I've tried different cables/chargers same result. I've emptied cache, no result.
Actually here's where I am: When the nexus is plugged with original cable+charger, Battery Monitor says plugged, discharging.
The flow shows a negative mA value. I tried charging the tablet while it's turned off, full night.
Sometimes I managed to get a full charge, sometimes only 5% increase during the whole night.
The usb port seems ok, I can plug it on a computer, copy files both ways, speed is ok. But still no charging.
I've read lots of forum posts concerning battery problems with nexus7, my understanding is that I'm facing
a hardware problem, not software. I have to open it and clean/check the link beetween usb port and the battery charging circuit.
Is there something else I can try before trying surgery?
thx

atom battery not getting charged

My atom is not getting charged. When i put it on ac adaptor it shows charging but even after 10 hoiurs the battery is empty and after removing from the power the phone shows main battery very low.
I tried charging thru laptop and same problem.
i have changed the battery also still the issue remains.
advice.

Yeah.. Atom behaves strangely sometimes.. In my case, some times when I switch on the bluetooth and try to charge it, It does not charge. But it seems to use the power coming from the charger to stay alive and operate normally (even if the battery is completely exhausted).
any suggestion how to make my atom charge
my xda atom started doing the same thing, I would plug it in and it would say that it's charging for about 5 seconds then the battery indicator would say full. Then I would unplug it and it would die out. I tried both charger & usb and the usb wouldn't work at all. So what I did is, I removed the battery let it sit for a minute. Put the battery back on and plugged the charger back in (without turning it on) and it's working. I was actually doing a search on this issue for the past couple of hours since this is the first time I've encountered this problem, but the phone seems to be charging now. I'll give everybody a update tomorrow to see if I have to keep taking out the battery everytime I want to charge it.
My problem is a bit different.
My Atom Exec charges with the USB cable synced to PC, and with one specific wall charger (specs: Input: 100-250V, Output: DC 5.5-12V, Max 1000mA, Min 150mA)
But it won't work with any other charger I try it with, even Universal charger I used to use with my HP iPaq. Is there some kind of trick to charging the Atom?
I as well have had this annoying problem happen a few times. I have a second battery and it happens with that battery as well so it has to be the Atom not 'reading the batteries' properly. As posted I have also found taking the battery our for a short time them putting it back seems to fix the problem untill it happens again
Try WM5torage. It will make your phone appear as a card reader in windows. Now pc will supply power to your device. Nice software trick.

After 100 days HD couldn't turn on Need Help

After have Touch HD for 100 daysI, have got a problem with it, it is about battery charging.
When HD turns on, it shows battery is low, then HD turns off automaticlly.
I tried charging battery with AC or USB, the Charging light is on but after hours, when turn on the devices it still shows battery is low, then turns off.
I changed a battery, it goes well, the device is on with all the fuction running well. and the previous battery is working after change the battery again. and it shows the battery is 90%.
But after a day. the problem is back again. and this time no matter what battery I changed, it still shows battery is low. and won't charge. even with the full battery the problem is same.
If you have the experience with this, please I do need your help.
BTW, The rom is from the factory.
Maybe the battery is fine, people have experinced problem with the actual charger. Have you tried charging through the computer?
Yes, I have tried charging with Computer, AC adpator and even Only charges the battery.
But the problem is not solved.
I suspect the HD's battery chip which manages the battery charging maybe broken ( if there is a battery chip)
Disconnect the HD from USB/Wall outlet. Remove the battery. Short circuit the pins in the HD battery compartment with a wire/metal piece. (never short the battery - it may explode!).
This helps in most cases for this problem. If not then warranty is the way to go.

phone thinks it is charged.

I dont know what caused this to happen, because i havent flashed anything new on my phone or made any changes for like a week now, but today when i got home from school and plugged in my phone, a few seconds later i get the messaged telling me that it is fully charged, even though the battery on the status bar says it is at 20%. i tried wiping the battery stats in cwm but it didnt fix it.
Possibly dirty usb port/connector. Otherwise, turn the phone off to charge it. If it still doesn't charge right, it could be that the battery went bad.
oh lol i cant believe i didnt realize this. i just got a new keyboard and i had my phone charger plugged into the usb port that is on the back of they keyboard, i shouldve known it cant charge off of that i was being stupid hah. plugged it into the computer and it works fine.

The phone will say it is charged when you plug it into a USB port with too low of a current rating.
I do not know what the cutoff threshold is, however I have a variety of USB ports and adapters that I charge my phone off of and some of them work great, but a couple of them have extremely low current ratings and the phone just says "charged" because it is not seeing enough power go into the battery.
This might be considered a bug, if there was a way for the hardware / charging drivers to measure the strength of the USB port the phone is attached to instead of solely looking at the current flowing into the battery.
Hrm. Weird that it would report charged when it doesn't get enough current to properly charge.
On a related note - I would also recommend doing a deep drain / charge cycle about once per month, to calibrate the battery charge sensor.
- Charge your phone to 100%.
- Then discharge it down to 0%.
- Then charge it back up to 100% via the OS.
- Turn the phone off, and keep it plugged in to the charger. A green battery icon will appear, and indicate when the battery is fully charged to 100%.
- Reboot the phone into recovery, and wipe battery stats.
Doing this about once per month for any Li-Ion battery will help calibrate the battery charge sensors on the device, giving you more accurate battery charge stats.

X10i not turning on / charging

Hi guys,
Suddenly facing a strange problem since last night.
My x10i was running out of charge & i connected to the comp to charge while i was working. I noticed the charging speed was extremely low, so i restarted the phone to see if it would help. Did not.
Thought there is some problem with the cable, used a different cable as well, but no use.
The slow charging had stopped and eventually the phone died.
Tried connecting to the socket & charging, still no use.
The red led blinks when i connect the phone to a charger via the usb or the socket.
needless to say the phone does not even boot up now, obviously for no charge...
any ideas wat maybe wrong or wat i could do ?
please advice
Have you tried to let it charge for some time in off mode? As long as your battery is not dead, and the phone get the right voltage through the USB connector it should charge in an "emergency mode". This is a slow way of charging, but allows for charging without any electronic circuits to monitor it, it is not the same as the charging screen that usually displays when you connect the phone while it is powered off. Usually when a phone is completely discharged it needs to be connected at least 15 min, sometimes a lot longer, before the electronics kicks in, and starts the speedcharging.
My best advise would be to connect it to the mains charger, or a USB port you KNOW supplies power. Some laptops cut down on the powersupply to the USB ports when they run on battery. Let it be connected for a long time (several hours), and then try to power it on again.
If that does not help three things can be wrong
1. Somewhere the USB connection is broken, either in the cable or in the connector on your phone (or on the PC's connector, but that is less likely).
2. The battery is dead, modern batteries contain circuits that actually disables the battery when any given parameters gets outside the defined limits. This is to prevent the battery catching fire. On some batteries this renders the battery useless, and you need a new battery.
3.) The mainboard of your phone is dead, and hence nothing works, can be ruled out if you can borrow a battery from someone to test if your phone works then.
I hope a good and long charge can sort out your problem, that is the easiest fix, and it is free.
Hi O_K,
well, i have been charging (or trying to) the phone since it died last night.
i have used different chargers & different modes of charge (through the system & the wall socket) - no joy at all.
the LED blinks red a couple of times when connected.
Very occasionally, the SONY ERICSSON logo (startup) shows on the screen & it switches off again, back to the blinking.
So charging for a long time & through different chargers has not helped.
gonna try a different battery now to see if that can help.
Thanks for your response!
well, tried switching chargers & batteries.
The problem seems to be with the charging unit on the phone (USB)
with any charger or battery, wen connected the led blinks (like wen the phone is charging), but there is no charge happening.
eventually the phone dies, even if charging
any ideas?
There is a thread some where in this forum for fixing the same problem you have...I don't remember the exact name of the thread..if I find it I'll post the link here..Anyways what the guy did was
-Pull the battery out and connect the charger till the led turns green.
-put in the battery now and charge the phone...
and I think that was it.
Hope it helped..
EDIT: Found the link.

[Q] Critical battery icon showing when powered on.

I left my phone charging overnight via the wall charger. Battery registered at 1% when I started the charge.
When I woke up this morning I had a large low battery icon on the screen and the phone won't turn on. I disconnected the charge, tried charging with another charger but everytime it shows the SAMSUNG logo, then the large low battery icon.
I tried removing the battery, cleaning the charger port terminals, swapped out different USB cords, everything but a hard reset.
No matter what I do the phone will not start up.
Has anyone experienced this before, or possibly no how to resolve it?

Happened to me several times (on both my focuses Rogers and AT&T), and I came to the conclusion it's a bug somewhere in the phone or the battery. I'm not sure exactly where the problem is (software, hardware) but I can tell you how I fixed it.
What happens is, the battery is almost depleted, it actually is 1%. The phone incorrectly reads that thinks it's charged fully and doesn't allow further charging the battery. So, you're not able to charge the battery correctly.
Now, as I previously stated in some other posts, I recommend having a standalone charger (Samsung i9000 ones are compatible are very cheap) as well as a secondary battery. The depleted battery gets charged fine in the standalone charger and when it passes 5% charge, it can be charged fine (again) in the phone.
This doesn't happen often, I believe it happened 5 times in more than 300 charging cycles (2 phones x 150 charges, I have them for over a year) so it's not that common.
I also found that it *may* work if you charge the battery in another phone.
As a general thumb rule, it's important not to leave the battery to completely discharge, and connect the charger/usb when it reaches about 40% (when you can, ofc). Please refer to my post here to see how you can preserve battery life.
