[Q] I9500 Battery temperature related to sim card help - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, so I have a strange problem, both official and custom roms work fine without a sim card installed but when the sim card is in the battery temperature reads at a constant unfluctuating 70 degrees (which it really isn't because it's not even warm) according to temperature monitoring app, this causes various problems. Without the sim card installed the readings are around 40 degrees which seems accurate.
I've tried using another sim card and it has the same issue.
On official 4.4.2 the battery temp reading means that I can't charge the phone while it's on, it gets the "charging paused, battery temperature too high" popup as soon as i plug in a the usb cable via charger or pc, but it charges when the phone is off. All other usb functions work normally, file transfer, adb. I would assume this is because the software thinks the battery temperature is 70 degrees.
On other roms as soon as it connects to my phone network while booting it then shuts down presumably because of the same temperature issue.
I haven't seen anyone with this particular problem, i've seen a lot of charging paused because temperature is too high or too low issues but none of them mentioned the sim card thing and they either fixed it by changing the usb board or they changed it and the issue still persisted and remains unsolved.
It's quite frustrating and the only solution i could think of is to somehow manually set the temperature reading so it wouldn't think it's overheating, is that even doable? Has anyone ever encountered this or has any advice?

I have now replaced the usb charging board and battery and the problem still persists, any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

Phone doesn't charge when screen is off

I'm having a strange problem with my phone where it won't charge when the screen is turned off. I've been monitoring the charging status with a battery stats logging app, and the charging current drops 0 whenever the screen goes off and then jumps back to normal values when the screen is turned back on. The phone doesn't seem to charge while completely turned off either.
I have tried multiple chargers and cables. The most powerful charger I have access to at the moment is only 1.5a, I hope to try a 2a tablet charger when I get the chance. I have also tried factory resetting the phone as well as switching from CM10.1 to Omnirom, neither of which affected the charging.
Has anyone had similar issues in the past? I find it very strange since a complete wipe and changing roms had no effect, which suggests a hardware problem. However, I don't understand why the charging would stop only when the screen is turned off, that doesn't seem like a hardware issue to me.

Battery Drains While Charging!!

I have the T-Mobile version of Galaxy S4, purchased July 2013, stock ROM, latest update.
Recently, while connected to the charger, the charging icon showing on the screen, the battery percentage number goes down, until it finally runs out of power. Not only does it not charge while charging, but the power depletes.
I have tried it with different chargers and cords, same problem, so the issue clearly is in the S4 itself.
Fortunately I have an external battery charger and extra batteries, and that is the only way I can keep my phone running now. (The problem occurs with different batteries too, so the issue is clearly in the phone.)
What can be causing this problem? Any way I can fix it? (Of course it is out of warranty, so send to warranty repair is not an option.)
Thanks in advance for your help.
Well from what you say, it obviously is the charging port on the phone that is faulty.
Unless it has a software bug whicj limits the current.
It won't give the battery enough current. This also happens if you charge the phone through the usb port on a pc.
Changing the micro usb port on the phone would be an option. You can take it to a repair center or do it yourself, if you have the technical know-how.
Althoug, this won't guarantee succes. Some people said that even after changing the micro usb on the phone, they still had issues. Probably due to incorrect mounting.

Overheat and not working properly (or not at all)

My Galaxy s5 g900f overheats with anything i do, it overheated in recovery while i was trying to do a nandroid restore, it overheats while charging (turned off), it overheats when i turn it on, i see the samsung s5 animated logo altough very laggy, and when it turns on i enter my sim password and all i see is the notification bar and the rest is a black screen nothing works whatever i do.
When i say overheat i mean the screen and the upper back of the phone are hot, it all happens in a matter of a few minutes.
The CPU got upto 73C while i was doing the nandroid restore.
I got the stock charger and cable, never changed any hardware inside the phone is everything is genuine.
I am running Xtresto lite ROM for the past 4-5 months with no problems. (So i guess it's not the rom?)
Please help.
Thanks in advance.
edit: i've got it on the charger now and it's off and just noticed that the phone is discharging although it shows that is charging, it only charged up to a point i guess and now it is falling while on the charger on the wall
charging will be hotter than unplugged actually, also in my experience within TWRP with its temperature on screen, i also reached 70 degrees simply going through menus... which means there is no cpu idle state without a kernel/rom
so... are you able to run a temperature monitor (maybe with kernel adiutor) or is the whole thing going to freeze or shut down? there is supposed to be thermal throttling depending on kernel & if some parameters have been turned off (you can see them in kernel adiutor)
hopefully it's just some app failing or malware, not a hardware failure... is the phone allowed to turn on while usb plugged in WITHOUT battery? are you willing to wipe the OS? i'm not sure you got your nandroid backup completed (also i have no experience with that... i used TWRP to backup but never tried restoring when i moved from CM12 to CM13, my internal storage was untouched anyway)
edit: just reread your off+charging situation... is this a 2A charger that you know has been able to quickly charge in the past? (like, 0 to 70% in only an hour)
have you inspected the battery, its metal contacts, & the phone's metal contacts for the battery?

Hi, thanks for the reply
No, i cant run any app because as soon as i get in the os its just the notification bar and a black screen, my apps flicker for a second once in a while but there is no way of using the phone, not even in safe mode.
No, the phone can't run without a battery and am pretty sure every phone is like this. You need the battery plugged in for it to work whatsoever.
I have no choice but to wipe the os and reinstall it i backed up everything i could and possible.
This is indeed a 2A charger, it's the original samsung charger that came with the phone. The metal contacts seem fine and the battery is fine. It's not the battery that overheats it's the rest of the phone. When the phone is hot i removed the battery to check if it was the source of the heat and it wasn't.
edit: the battery is draining fast! i can't even charge it, it loses battery while on charger too (the phone is off)
edit 2: i made it until the wipe, then i went to install my rom and it turned off before i reached the point of flashing (thank god) and i guess its draining so fast i cant charge it
Maybe an external battery charger might help to at least give it sine juice to install stock. I'm sure the kernel is linked to charging while powered off. So fingers crossed its a software issue, though this those sound kind of worrying behaviour. External battery chargers can be bought quite cheaply of eBay. I bought a USB battery dock and a better quality male to male USB cable as provided one is crap, and use it with my original Samsung charger. Don't trust the wall plug in types as their all made in China... Best of luck.

geeze, well it does sound like 100% cpu usage... like those bitcoin mining malware
i would try to flash a fresh replacement or stock kernel+bootloader+baseband with root disabled using odin or something, we need to prove that the software is clean
as for the temperature, if it's winter where you are... get the phone some cold air (edit: by the way, lower temperature means lower wattage... only problem is battery capacity might also appear lower, so it's only good for being wired)

I will have a look into an external charger or look if someone can lend me their battery to test. Happy to know that the kernel is linked to charging, i still have my hopes to software!

where do i find those files for odin? sammobile? yeah it's winter my issue now is that it is completely dead it's not responding when i connect it to the charger at all. I tried 2 original samsung chargers. 3 different cables. my gooood! its driving me nuts.
anything i can do without sourcing a battery or an external charger? not sure i can source one here and dont want to wait for an ebay one really.
Could be a dud battery at the end of the day. Dodgy batteries can cause all sorts of issues. One test is to try spinning the battery on a flat surface. If it spins, its expanding and faulty. Though this isn't the only sign of a dud battery.

already did that, not spinning. lets hope it is still a faulty battery

Very slow charging - Low temperature error - Sometimes no flash on camera / GT-I9506

Before around 10 days my phone began to face a number of problems. First of all when i plug in the charging cable the notification led light (red) doesn't open. Also the phone doesn't shows that it charges. My cable is the original one and also my battery has also no problem! The phone is charging but very slow. It takes for example from 35% to 100% 12 hours! When i use the phone during charging and it became hot then the led light is opens after some times and th phone detects that its connected to a Base of connection something like that but when it shows that message the phone is starting to charge normal for sometime. On the other hand sometimes when i try to take a phone and try to enable the led light its shows me low temperature, led light can not open even if the temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius. And the last problem is the connection with my pc. When i try to install a rom from downloading mode with the odin, the connection works. When the phone is opened the usb connection is not recognized. But I bought an external battery charger and a second battery and i dont wast my time for waiting the device to charge and also i close the phone and open again to avoid the led low temperature problem, and as for the connection to tranfere files music photos etc i remove the sd card and i have an adapter usb to sd card so i tranfere files easy! But i want to fix those problems. Does anyone understand if the problem is comming from usb flexible connector or from the IC chip of the motherboard? please let me know. I want to fix my phone and use it as a second device! (Btw its not a software problem i try 3 different official roms from samsung)

Phone refuses to connect to PC

Hello,
I have been trying to connect my S10 Plus to my Laptop for a while now, but to no avail. It just keeps showing the charging logo on phone then it goes away and comes back right away over and over again.
What I have tried:
- Cleaned lint from port
- Reinstalled USB drivers from device manager ( and in safe mode as well)
- Reinstalled Samsung drivers
- Tried a different cable ( Samsung Original)
- Tried a Cheap 1$ cable
- Tried to clear Cache from recovery
- Tried the power option for USB in Windows 10 ( Selective suspend setting)
- Tried different USB ports
So, if someone knows a workaround for this problem, please do help me
PS. phone no longer shows fast charging after one UI 3.0
Thank you
Had the same problem on my Mac a week ago. Started up my pc and got the same problem. No matter what I did it didnt connect. I activated developerfunctions and then turned on USB Debug and turned it of a couple of times while connected to the PC. Suddenly it worked and has since then

nope, not even through developers options. Even factory reset didn't help x.x
This is a better pathway to use.

Thanks for the info.
Doesn't show up there at all.
Something weird happened for like 10 minutes and it was back to normal and could fast charge, but then it stopped. Seems to be something wrong with One UI 3.0

Did you try the rescan option? Unplug the phone and try again. Check phone for the permission to connect popup on it's homepage; without that being granted with each connection the PC can't see the drive.
Any errors showing in event manager?
Try battery recalibration if you normally don't charge to 100%. Allow to discharge to auto shutdown, charge to 100% and leave it on charger for another 2 hours after at 100%. Repeat.
Apparently if out of calibration it can cause erratic fast charging. Over time with partial charge cycles calibration is lost.
Saw this on my 10+
Fast charging varies throughout the charge cycle depending on battery temp and charge level.
Fast charging will not enable if battery is too cold, if so will continue slow charging even if battery warms up during the charge cycle (they may have corrected this).
Fast charging will not engage if temperature is too high; it will disengage around 100°F
Charging is an electrochemical reaction so for optimum charging sufficient temperature is necessary. Charging below 72°F Li plating can occur which will permanently degrade the cell.
Ideal battery temp is 82-90°F at start of charge cycle. Try to keep it from going over 99°F or under 85F during the charge cycle.

Thank you much for being helpful.
I usually charge it when it is 40 and only let it go up to 92 max.
Will try recalibrating the battery. Hopefully, this works.
purchased new, qualcomm, i run down to 15-20, then to 100% fast charging, 3.0/a11.

Sorry for taking too long to answer, calibrating took much time x.x
Now, it connects to pc on one side only which is nice xD
The other side says check your charger connection. I guess some copper pins are shorted out or broken IDK
Thank you so much for helping

Sometimes temperatures and humidity can lead to such a thing, if it's not just a broken port. Do try the things people and I mentioned above, might just work for u.
