[Q] Nook Color & Cyanogenmod 11 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running 10.2.1-encore and gapps 20130813. I'm trying to use the auto updater to update to version 11 however when I do it says theres no gapp installer. I'm installing (rather trying to)to a 2gb sd card in my nook. I have no clue how to update to version 11. I've looked on here, and one guide in particular seemed helpful. It actually helped me install the current version I'm using but the auto-updater won't install 11. Apparently I'm to dumb to figure this out, could someone help me get 11 on my nook color and the new google apps version?

You cannot autoupdate to CM11. CM11 requires entirely different CWM, rom and gapps.

Yea I kinda figured I couldnt use the auto update but how can I can about removing 10 from my sdcard and updating it to 11?

Start over by putting the newest image (rev8c) on an SD. It is required by CM11. But that image also requires at least a 4GB SD. If you want to save your apps and settings, use Titanium Backup.

[Q] Rooted CM7, no market Missing Apk(s)

Hi.
My nook color was on 1.4 (latest bn update), I dual boot it with cm7 following this set of instructions - youtube.com/watch?v=OxDEZ1Fc6iE
when started, the android guy didn't appear and it didn't ask to log in to my google account. in the menu, there's no market.
went to settings - manage applications - there's no google service framework nor market.
I then rooted it instead with cm7 again following - youtube.com/watch?v=lmmmm8cBpe0
same thing, no google service framework, no market.
I've dual booted, rooted, unrooted to 1.0, rooted, over and over again but no luck. I doubt there's something wrong with the files, is it not reading/installing it properly? I downloaded the files through the right links multiple times.
since then, I tried all sorts of ways to try to download the apps but nothing works as well. I also tried installing the files individually (google service framework, onetimeinitializer, setupwizard, talk, vending) but it keeps saying "Application not installed."
Once I did manage to download market, but when I open it, it just gets out and crashes.
Is there another way to root it with a sure way of having market on it? or what am I doing wrong?
Please help. ): I'm not an expert with all these things so if you could explain it in simple terms.
So are you running from an SD card? Did you download gapps.zip and put it on the boot partition?
Sent from space
yes, I rooted from an sdcard. I followed the exact instructions on the video - (youtube.com/watch?v=lmmmm8cBpe0) Is something missing? Am I suppose to partition the sd? By my understanding, partition is something like splitting the memory on the sd? is it?
Sorry, I'm a real beginner on this.
Well the video you followed on Failtube has you installing to your internal memory. Did you flash the google apps zip while in clockwork?

My connection is horrible for video right now so please forgive me for not watching the video... did you include the latest GApps.zip and install that too?
Put the latest GApps*.zip on a sd card and install using ROM Manager.

yup I tried doing that too. the files still didn't appear.
Okay, I managed to install CM7 and market! I followed eyeballer's guide at forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227&fb_source=message through Koopakid08's link on his/her signature.
There was market on it and it opens. but doesn't start dowloads. I did the usual of delete the caches, reboot and now, it downloads fine.
I then overclocked it with www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mvwmx9qSZY guidance. not much of a guide but i managed to find the files and installed. but it overclocked to 1.1ghz, not 1.3. I don't really mind, but just wondering what I did wrong.. I'm thinking of trying it again but using the latest phiremod 7.1. I used the old 6.1 yesterday instead because I wasn't very sure.
So, now my question would be do I have to revert it back to cm7 then overclock it again? or can I just do it over what I've already done? or must I start from scratch, unroot, root to cm7 then overclock?

You can just install it as an update using ROM Manager and not lose any data. Just make sure the only boxes checked when you update are wipe dalvik cache and backup.

I was about to update it, but now, my google account keeps saying my password is wrong, and I can't sign in. What can I do now? I tried updating the rom from rom manager but it says there's no updates available.
if I were to do it through recovery, I need to burn the clockwork on the sd, put the files in, and just install zip? or do i need to format system and data first?

Go to download a rom to choose the rom you want.
You should install clockwork to your internal memory using rom manager and then you won't have to fool around with SD cards. If you want to update manualy through recovery then you need to wipe dalvik cache and then use the install a zip option. To boot into recovery hold volume up on boot.

I went - Rom manager - Download ROM - Error occured while processing the ROM list/Error occured while Developing Download list
How do I continue? ):
If I do update it manually through recovery, I need to install the phiremod v7.1, do I need to install gapps_phiremod_7.1 as well? the instructions are gone since phiredrop deleted his website. I can't find any other instructions for updating from 6.1 to 7.1
I still can't sign into my google account, keeps saying my password is incorrect. Any way to fix this?
"install clockwork to your internal memory using rom manager and then you won't have to fool around with SD cards."
so thats how it works. hahaha, that'll be great and less of a hassle for me. I've been repeating the burn clockwork, install, flash all sorts of roms too many times.

1. Try pressing menu- clear download cache and see if that changes anything.
2. Yes you should flash gapps again seeing how you are having problems with your google account.
3. I've never used phiremod so I am not sure if that is a problem. I would suggest that you go with just virgin CM7.1 but I'm sure phiremod will be fine too.

Okay, after all the trial and errors, my nook color is finally up and running awesomely on cm7,phiremod 7.1 at 1.2ghz.
Went to rom manager - download rom - phiremod - v7.1 - reboot after that, I had to do gapps again because some files like market wasn't in the menu, but on the homepage. rom manager - download rom - phiremod - gapps - reboot.
so everything is working well so far.
thanks to all the help I received, especially koopakid08!
If you want to easily overclock your nook to the Max, along with adjusting voltage to handle it and adjusting speaker gain and other stuff, look up Nook Tweaks (icon is a nook outline with gears inside). The process is very simple, just make sure you install it to the device not SD (I made that mistake), because otherwise it won't set the CPU speed and voltage settings on boot (even with the boxes checked). I am able to get my nook running smoothly at 1300MHz, but the option goes up to 1600. So wherever your nook's Max is can be found with this app. No need to readjust your kernel, just install the app and go. If you want to make sure that it is working on boot, download autostarts, which shows what starts during boot.

True but you will not gain any performance by going over 1.2, only worse battery life and the chance of overheating.
Sent from space
Well I certainly don't think I know any better than anyone else, its just that I recorded a pretty decent increase from 1.2 to 1.3 when I ran a benchmark using Quadrant Standard. That's the only basis I currently have, but I figured since Quadrant Standard got good reviews that it was creditable... do you know of a better benchmark?

Oh, sounds great but I think I'll keep it at 1.3 rather than 1.6, I don't want it to overheat it or something. I've already downloaded the app and tried to change it to 1.3, but what is the CPU stepping 1,2,3,4,5? I changed it to 800, 900, 1000, 1200 and 1300. Is that okay?

[Q] NEW Nook Color rootable? article...

hey, I am new to the tablet world, I tried to search for this and look in the recent post and didnt really find the answer I was looking for....
So if I buy a new or refurbished Nook Color right now from B&N... will I be able to root it?!
this article is old... so I am not sure if this is the case?
any advice Please
WARNING - READ THIS FIRST: Barnes and Noble has introduced a new hardware revision which bricks your unit if you install their official 1.0.0 Firmware (A step needed to root). As of right now, Nooks with serial #s starting with 1003 (running firmware 1.5) cannot be rooted, and should NOT be attempted. First.... those may be Nooks and NOT Nook Colors... The newest firmware for Nook Color or Nook Tablets is 1.4.1 and you reference FW ver 1.5.
Also, I don't know of any NC's or NT's with serial numbers below 2000 first 4 digits.
Additionally, with the newer rooting tools available, you don't need to install anything prior to 1.4.1 to root them.

I am aware the article is old... So short answer...
A new bought nook can be rooted?!?

Short answer, yes.
My base FW is 1.0.0. I'm running the 20120217 build of Mirage-Kang from eMMC.
I can't imagine how it could get much more rooted than this unless it would be to follow the directions to root it to the letter but if I did that then I wouldn't be much of an Asshole and I am a journeyman Asshole so there you have it.
Oh, and I don't feel terribly compelled to take it out of the case to look at the serial.

Which rooting do you wish to do? If you want to run the stock B&N apps side by side with apps downloaded from the B&N market, then first register the refurbished system with B&N, then go to NC developer forum and look in "[NC][1.4.1] ManualNooter 5.02.19". That's a couple of minor version steps past the one I used, but it looked like its got it all pulled together from the three different sources of info I used last month.
I wanted to keep Nook Comics support in the stock ereader, so I opted for the manual nooter.
If you want to do a CM7/CM9/MIUI root, which installs alternate firmware for the system instead of modifying the existing firmware to allow Android market apps ... well then, I dunno, as after experimenting with a CM7 sd sidecard, I opted for the manual nooter approach. I'd look in the developer forum for the most recent thread with detailed install instructions for the firmware I wanted to install.
Pretty off topic, but this helped me when I needed to exchange a nook color that I had lost the box for. If you need your serial number, it is inside the flap that covers the micro SD slot.
There are other ways to find it, but if you are on the phone with support and a rooted nook, this is a useful thing.
I also just bought a refurb Nook Color. It is running 1.3.0 out of the box. I want to root it then install CM7. However I can't find any clear posts on how to. Either they are all for earlier FW or 1.4. Should I update to 1.4 before Nootering? If so which MNooter should I use? Or is it recommended to just Nooter 1.3? Again which Mnooter should I use for 1.3?
Thanks

You do not need to root the B&N firmware before loading CM7. You do need to decide whether you want to run CM7 on internal eMMC or external SD. If you plan to install CM7 to eMMC, you will over-write the B&N firmware, so rooting it is pointless. Once you've decided that, we can point you in the right direction.
There are also guides here on rooting B&N firmware that you can locate with a bit of searching.

Yes, as I said, that's the setup I was using when I decided I prefer a manual nooter. Among your choices, you can:
(1) Replace the stock firmware with an alternative, such as CM7
(2) Run CM7 off a booting SD card and run stock B&N from internal memory
(3) Root the stock B&N system and then load and run Android market apps alongside the B&N built-in and B&N store apps.
I wanted to keep the features of the 1.4.1 ereader, including Nook Comics support, so for me (1) was out, and I only needed a few apps from the Android Store, so I finally settled on (3) to avoid having to boot back and forth between the two systems. But first I did (2) to try things out and get an idea of whether I wanted to root the B&N firmware or replace it with something like CM7.

It think I wanna go for option 2&3, can I not root the B&N internal system and also run CM 7 from SD card?
Do I have to take the SD card in and out depending in which one i wanna boot!?
Also another question... The whole reason this rooting is done if I understand correctly is to have access to all the systems in the NC, where do I get the Apps from ? Do I still have to get them through the market? Or can I download them somewhere!?
Got a question... Git my nook today, and it seems to be lagging quite a bit sometimes... Is that normal? Sometimes tottaly unresponsive... Is this normal?!

Taking the SD card in and out depending on which one I wanted to boot, then full power off and power on was the way I did it. Don't know if there's a better way, but never saw a better way mentioned.
You can indeed run CM7 from an SD card and root the B&N internal system. That would allow you to use Nook Tweaks in the CM7 side to, for example, run a keyboard off the USB port and overclock the chip ~ neither of which you can do with the stock kernel ~ and still have the use of the 1.4.1 ereader for Nook Comics or media-enhanced ebooks.
Get a main microSD card for the CM7 SD card install. Follow the CM7 SD card instructions to do the CM7 SD card install on the big card.
And then get another microSD card (2GB Class 4 is plenty) and follow the 1.4.1 manual nooter instructions to root the stock B&N kernel.

If you follow the CM7 SD card install directions, you will have access to the full Android Market on that install. Same thing if you follow the 1.4.1 manual nooter instructions ~ you will have access to the Android Market via the Nook Color Application Manager, and if you want can put the Android Market on the B&N Home Screen.
Its best to have a gmail.com account already, for the Android market registration, so sign up for one of those before starting the process if you don't already have one. And from the Android Market, you can also install the other markets (Amazon, 1mobile, GetJar) if you prefer one of those.

It can be laggy, especially if you have too much load on it. Sometimes I'm surprised at how many windows I have open in the stock browser. Turning it all the way off will shut down apps that you may have left unclosed, free up RAM, and its normally back to its normal self.
Mind, the gurus have Android apps that can be used to shut down individual apps, but the brute force approach seems to work for me.
thanks for the quick detailed reply...
for the LAGS, well I dont have hardly anything open... the only thing i installed and bought was from the market. Angry Birds... and it seems sometime it will not respond to the throwing of the bird, but just scale the screen... even to exit the game and after the game is closed it seems to not respond properly... having to tap a button 5 times until it responds... and than it works fine after a reboot... and than a couple hours later same thing in the game... ..
also it seems like internetpages like nick.com seem to load forever and are very laggy. I ahve a 10 MBIT Internet connectio over wifi, so that shouldnt be a problem....
To teh dual Systems...Do I also need a second 2GB card for the rooted internal stock system, or is that just for the installation of it!?
I actually do have a 16 GB and a 2 GB at home already...

Same thing if you follow the 1.4.1 manual nooter instructions ~ you will have access to the Android Market via the Nook Color Application Manager, and if you want can put the Android Market on the B&N Home Screen."

That's just the stock Android Browser and an 800MHz single core system with 512Mb RAM plowing through a site with all the bells and whistles and targetted at a PC. Try the Dolphin HD browser (its in the B&N store, and its free so no worry about having to re-download it from the Android market to your CM7 install) ... it has an option to hold off flash content until you actually want to run it that can really speed up some sites.
To teh dual Systems...Do I also need a second 2GB card for the rooted internal stock system, or is that just for the installation of it!?

Installation ... you want a good sized card for the CM7 install, and reading and storing an image from a large card, then formatting it and writing the install card image, then saving the install card image, formatting, and restoring the CM7 install image is a royal pain.
Note that you probably want to keep the install card as a bootable recovery card. 1GB is enough to do the manual noot, but 2GB is enough to hold the recovery of the original stock B&N before you do the manual root. 4GB is even better, as it can hold a recovery of the stock B&N as well as a recovery of the system right after it is manually nooted, in case you do something later to get it messed up.
And you can get a 4GB Class 4 card for $5 with free shipping from Amazon ~ the new 32GB flash cards have pushed the price of the smaller ones way down ~ so to my mind that's worth it to be able to set aside a recovery card.

Yes. There are paid apps, but both the CM7 install or the manual nooter give full access to a wide range of free apps on the main Android Market, and allow you to install 1mobile, GetJar, or Amazon if you prefer any of those markets.

Not for the SD card install of CM7. Be sure to follow the instructions for making an SD card install on a 1.3 system.
You'll want to upgrade for a rooted stock B&N Kernel to 1.4.2, because its only 1.4 that has the updated ereader, Nook Color tailored Netflix app, likely B&N Store HuluPlus this Friday ... if you were replacing the stock Kernel, there's be no reason to update, and the installs for the 1.3 system are more mature ... but if you want to keep the B&N Kernel, upgrade to 1.4.2. before you lock it down from further OTA updates.

I'd don't know from personal experience, but I've seen some warnings about it being best to have a gmail.com account. Just to be safe, I'd sign up for a gmail.com account and give your primary gmail account as the email account used to confirm that you are a real person. Save it in an "Accounts" folder in your main gmail if you are unlikely to use it for anything except the Android market.

Before you start working on the unit, go to the store (its on the navbar) search for apps and download a free app. Dolphin HD is a good one. If it downloads and installs, you are linked to the B&N store.

[Q] Netflix Problems on CM10; running off SD card

Howdy,
I really did search the forums, so I'm sorry if the answer is out there and I couldn't find it.
I'm running CM 10 from an SD card on my Nook Color. My Android version is now 4.1.2, with Cyanogen Mod Version of 10-20121220-NIGHTLY-encore (the latest nightly. I had one from 12-12 before that).
Prior to this I ran a version of CM7. Everything worked fine on the CM7, I just thought I should check out Jelly Bean.
Everything works fine on the new (Android 4.1.2) system EXCEPT netflix. I downloaded it from the Google Play store, and all it does is hang on the loading screen.
I'm competent to flash downloaded nightlies on my SD card, but not to build ROMs myself.
Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

The updated Netflix version in the Play store will not work. You need to install Netflix version 1.81. Search this forum and you will find the link to the apk. Or you can Google Netflix version 1.81 apk download. There is also a modified black screen version that will work.
Thanks so much. I found it and downloaded it.
What exactly do I DO with the apk? Put it in my boot sector and boot into recovery?

When you download the apk it should be in your download folder. Use the download manager (icon with green downward pointing arrow) to select the file. Box will pop up asking if you want to install. Select install. If you want to move Netflix to SD card go to system, apps, all, Netflix. You will see an option to move it to SD card.
Awesome! Got it, thanks so much! Consider this solved.

Sideloading after 2.1.0

I have installed the extras zip and was able to install amazon app store. I still cannot sideload many apps and get the 'there is a problem parsing the package' message. Basically, I downloaded the apk and used package installer and got this message.
Thanks for your help

Do you think rooting the tablet will help you?
Flashing to allow unknown sources via the image disk worked great for me. Adobe Flash and all my other non market installed apps working great. I did not root.
Edit:
Changed post from permissions to unknown sources.

Can you please elaborate on "Flashing permissions via the image disk". Which file to flash? Can you please link to the thread that has this file.
Thanks!

It is not a file to flash, his terminology is a little off. He means going to CWM and the advanced menu and choose 'fix permissions'.

I tried 'fix permissions' but no success. I am trying to install widely used apps from travel sites like Orbitz and Travelocity which are installed on my samsung 7+ tab running ICS. It must have something to do with stock as they were installed on CM 10 on nook hd+. While I prefer stock due to the excellent sleep option and battery life, I may have to go back to CM 10.

It probably is a terminology issue, but what I did was:
1. Create the image with a micro sd.
2. Drap the Rev3 zip to the sd
3. Shut off the Nook
4. Insert the sd into the Nook and then turned it on
5. Went to the option to flash via the sd card with volume and pressed home key
6. Chose the Rev3 zip and pressed home. The files installed,
7. Removed the sd
8. Restarted..... Hung on the Nook screen for ten minutes, so held power to turn off
9. Restarted
10. Was able to side load all of my apps that needed it after that. I started with Adobe Flash which works GREAT with Dolphin, Opera and Xscope (had to side load Xscope, since could not install via market).
I do not recall flagging permissions in the image menu. I thought the flash process did all that, which it apparently did for me.
Side loaded Flash, Oid emulators, aFBA, Xscope and some market games as well that could be saved with an unrooted back-up app.

His terminology was mixed up. He did not mean "fix permissions" either. He meant flashing the Extras zip, which enables unknown sources, not "flash permissions". But you had already done that.
So I don't know how to fix your problem.
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM10.1 on emmc.
Yep, to me getting unknown sources working is a permission, but wrong in the true Android terminology.
Regardless, being able to install by side loading and the 2.1 update make this one of the best tablets. Actually, it seems a direct equal to the Excite 7.7 which IMO is the best current overall tablet. Better in some regards. The display and power efficiency in sleep mode is a big part of the departuresweight for the HD+.
Thanks, All is Well !

Leapinlar- you have been wonderful with your work on this tablet . Your note made me realize that may be there is something wrong with the apk files I had copied from my other tablet. After spending many hours searching on google for sites that were not merely links to google play, I downloaded the apk files I needed. All of them installed perfectly !
Thanks once again to you, verygreen and bokbokan for making nook tablet the best tablet out there.
kind regards

May be not the right place to ask, if that I am sorry. Anyway, by flashing extra.zip, will it help with host USB on the nook hd+?

Hello, I followed your tutorial to the exact letter and all I got was my nook restarting several times before finally wiping itself and having to do the whole set up process again. I formatted the card and set the card to active like instructed. But which rar do I need? I am running the nook hd with 2.1.0. Software. I tried all the nook hd bootfiles rars listed and added the zip I wanted to install and it keeps rebooting and wiping.
Thanks

You need the one that says NookHD, CWM and BOOTFILES and ends in rar. You must extract the 5 files there to the SD. Be sure to copy the one named MLO first.

Well, I have the DEB nightly of 2-19-14 of OmniRom
I have unknown sources checked
But when I try to install the Google Voice apk, I get the message : Cant open file.
Also, would you like the error message for GApps as well. or do you just want the apk troubles ?

I don't see any DEB nightly on Omnilog. Only FLO version is available.
Are you running an unofficial version?
Its an official build right from the OmniRom website.
Heres the link to the DEB...

1) How did you get the apk on your phone?
2) What file manager are u using to install the apk?
I downloaded it directly to the tablet. & I went into the Downloads folder & just taped on it to install. Then I also copied it over to the tablet under OSX. after deleting it off the tablet the first time.

Again, which file manager are you using to navigate to your download folder and install the apk?
There is no file Manager on the system. Nor do I have GApps installed. And when I try to install any thing, it wont install. & since I dont have the Play store, I cant go through that to download/install any thing either… What a mess
- Btw. Thanks for taking an interest & trying to help me with this.
Your issue maybe that you don't have gapps installed and it's missing the installer files to install the apk

Does 'adb install' from a PC work?
Many of the gapps APKs are required to be in /system so they can't be installed via 'adb install' or any other method. Maybe the APK you're trying to install has a dependency on gapps.
Google apps, as well as apps that rely on the APIs they expose (mapping is common) are a tightly intertwined mess. You'll get seemingly silent install errors because you're missing libraries, for example. Trying to restore apps through Titanium Backup will similarly fail if they are missing required libraries.
They generally will show up though logcat if you look carefully. Resolving the issue requires the sufficiently complete and self-consistent (sub-) set of Gapps.

Yeah. What a lot of people don't realize is how many apps that are out there which aren't part of gapps, but require the presence of the core gapps components.
