I purchased this phone from an individual who towel rooted the phone. It's a Verizon Galaxy s5. I did a complete restock and went to download mode to check the knox counter. The knox counter is missing on the download screen. Any ideas?
Old Bootloader?

You neglected to tell us anything about your phone e.g. the firmware, bootloader versions and so forth that would enable us to answer this better.
But the fellow above makes the best estimate. You probably have a pre-Knox bootloader.
.
I attached a picture of the download screen in my previous post. I will give you all the information I have:
Model # SM-G900V
Android Version 4.4.2
Baseband Version G900VVRU1ANE9
Build # KOT49H.G900VVRU1ANE9

Security Software Version

VPN v1.4 Release 1
When I go to my application manager and than over to "All" and scroll down to "K" I do see three parts for Knox. I cant turn them off but I can force stop them.

Hello, I have a few questions about rooting my Samsung Galaxy S4.
I want to root to enable some hidden CSC features, edit the hosts file and to install an adblocker.
Not to install an custom ROM.
But I have a few questions.
Do I still get OTA updates after rooting my device?
And what happens after I update, do I lose root, are those CSC features and the hosts file resetted, and is the adblocker uninstalled?
I am currently running the latest version of Samsung.
Information about my device:
Model number: GT-I9505
Android version: 4.3
Baseband version: I9505XXUEMKF
Kernel version: 3.4.0-2082040, [email protected] #1, Wed Nov 27 22:04:32 KST 2013
Build number: JSS15J.I9505XXUEMKF
SE for Android status: Enforcing, SEPF_GT-I9505_4.3_0018
Secure boot status: Type: Samsung
And under status I see "Device status: Official".
Thanks.
I'd like to know this as well. I've got no interest in flashing ROM's or anything like that, just need root to run a few Apps I use. How does this affect updating, and can it be easily rolled back for warranty purposes?
Thanks for any help.

Oh yeah, and do you keep warranty?
We in the Netherlands have a law that the warranty does not get voided if you root it.
Dutch law said:
If the failure of a phone is not the direct result of the rooting or jailbreaking, the warranty remains valid, even if the terms of the seller states that it is not the case.

I'm pretty new to the Android phones. I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet about a year ago, and I absolutely love it -- which was the only reason why I considered an Android phone when it came time to upgrade. That might have been a mistake.
The phone I chose was a Galaxy S5 from AT&T.
For many reasons I won't go into (and that many of you probably know) Kitkat is awful. Removing SD card access removed one of the most important reasons that I bought the phone. So, I decided to root the thing.
I read a bunch of info on how to root, and, eventually downloaded and tried to use towelroot only to discover that AT&T/Google have blocked all functionality of that program. My build is, unfortunately, the latest build -- July 22 2014 (or there abouts).
Now, I'm not sure if the phone was given to me with that update -- I only got the thing on Sunday. Maybe it was, maybe not. Dunno. So I have a couple of questions.
If I were to factory reset the phone, would that roll back these "Security" OTA updates that were pushed onto the phone? I'm pretty sure there was at least one after I got the thing. I've spent a fair amount of time setting the phone up, but I'll do it again if a factory reset would allow me to root the phone and return the SD card functions.
Is there a way to push an earlier version of the ROM onto the phone. I'm guessing not, since I think I read that AT&T helpfully locked the bootloader.
Finally, does anyone know of any way to root this device if neither of the two paths I presented above will work?
Thanks for any help. If I can't restore the SD card functionality, I'll probably just return the phone. That would be a bummer because I was really excited about it.

I see that there are tutes here, and am wading through the 50+ pages of forum posts to find what I need. However, my worry is that none of this stuff will work because of the new firmware. Here is all the info that I have on my phone:
Galaxy S5 AT&T US version (SAMSUNG-SM-900A)
Android 4.4.2
kernel version 3.4.0-2178781 [email protected] #1 Tuesday July 22
Build # KOT49H.G900AUCU2ANG3
SE for Android Status
Enforcing SEPF_SAMSUNG-SM-G900A_4.4.2_0018 Tuesday July 22
Security Software version:
MDF v1.0 Release 3
VPN v1.4 Release 1
Thanks all the pertinent info, I think.
Because the update was so new, I don't think there's a way to root this anymore. People keep telling me to use ODIN and to download an earlier ROM (and I now have ODIN and an earlier ROM -- hopefully from a good source, but I have no idea if it is), but my impression is that this latest AT&T "security" update keeps you from reflashing the ROM because of the bootloader lockout.
Any further help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,
As I told you, the only method working for me (because of towelroot non working) is cf auto root.
Check periodicaly here http://autoroot.chainfire.eu/ to see if your model is listed.
I had just a look and it's not listed yet.
If it is, flash by odin and look if root works.
If not, you've got to flash by odin the same rom again (keep your original file on pc), you'll loose nothing, and report this fails on chainfire to test other solution.
Good luck

Not only build number and kernel version, you need to check your Bootloader version with Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app (in the FIRMWARE INFO section).
Bootloader version is one of the important info to check when you are going to root or flashing custom rom.

Hey that looks like a great utility. Thanks! The bootloader is G900AUCU2ANG3
Does that help any? People keep telling me I need to use ODIN and flash this, that or the other thing. Those comments would probably be more helpful if I knew more about this stuff, but my reading has lead me to believe that ODIN won't work with certain version of the bootloader. Or is that wrong?

Hello.
I just recently got Galaxy S5 which appears to be only sold in Japan. There's some custom firmware installed on it which prevents Android to be updated. Phone doesn't have SIM locked, so any SIM card can be used.
Because the forum doesn't allow me to post link to a screenshot which shows firmware info I'll just write it down.

I'd like to completely wipe this firmware from the device, replace it with the latest Android version (6.0?) and root it. At first I'd like to know if it's even possible to do any kind of firmware changes on this model and what exactly do I need to perform the update/root.
Thanks.
Doesn't look like there is a 6.0 stock ROM for it, but you can upgrade to 5.0 here
http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?r=&v=&q=SCL23
Flash with ODIN (Instructions all over the forum many times)
Okay, instructions on updato seems quite easy to follow so that shouldnt be a problem. Is there any recommended tool for root? I've found a lot of them and I really don't want to mess something up.
PS: How come there's no stock ROM for 6.0 even tho it's been mentioned in some articles that SCL23 model is also supported by Marshmallow update?
Anyone?
Okay, update to 5.0 passed without any issues. There are some default japanese applications on the phone which I cannot uninstall, is it possible to get rid of those somehow?
I have the same device Do you update succeeded or not

Go to this link & download 4.4.2 then follow this tutorial.
Make sure to use key input from the options & use capital letters where needed. All being well you will have everything working again.
Make sure not to use any download manager for the download link. File gets about 100kbps so it'll take a few hours but you will get it.
I did the above then rooted the phone & flashed correct TWRP version to it then flashed 5.0 Lollipop SpaceX rom here. Everything working good & no loss of service on reset or reboot.
Hope it helps
I know there's a lot of discussions already on these topics but as this is the first time I'm rooting any of my devices, I just wanted to make sure I know what I'm doing and what I might end up messing.. hope the members will come forward and take me to the world of infinite possibilities..
The phone I'm using:
Samsung Galaxy s8 ( SM-G950FD)
Reasons I want to root my phone:
1. Dual speaker mod
2. Viper4android
3. Substratum themes (black overlay on all apps)
4. Uninstalling bloatware
5. Maximizing free RAM to enhance speed and fluidity
6.Other software tweaks that requires root permission
7. s9 infinity wallpapers
Now, let's come down to WHY AM I HOLDING MYSELF BACK:
1.nervous and confused like hell
2.secure folder (I love Samsung's method of securing personal data)
3. Samsung pass autofill feature
4. Different instructions all over the internet for doing same thing i.e rooting, recovery, etc. Not sure which is the absolute best and safest method.
Questions on my mind:
1. Can I come back exactly where I'm right now once I root, install TWRP?
2. Which would be the best and most stable ROM taking my rooting priorities into account?
3. Can't I use secure folder and samsung pass integration after rooting? (Some posts, videos suggest we can use these even after rooting)
4. What does tripping KNOX mean? Is it something like, once I install custom recovery I can't ever access the KNOX integrated softwares?? even if I decide to come back where I'm now i.e everything samsung has provided us with. In other words, it's question 1.
I know I made my queries a bit too large.. large enough to make some folks laugh at me, but it is what it is.. I just wanted you people to know EXACTLY where I'm standing, what I'm trying to do.. please do not hesitate to leave any suggestion/comment RELATED to my post.
And the LAST FAVOUR (at least for the time being ) I would want from you folks would be a STEP BY STEP GUIDE to achieve my targets.. i.e rooting, TWRP recovery and "Reasons I want to root my phone" section..
Plz, plzzz, plzzzzzz help me..

Before going anywhere you need to know, once you install twrp, your Knox is permanently tripped, if you use Samsung pay, it won't work, if you stay stock things like s-health, secure folder won't work. Using custom roms will allow you to use s-health and secure folder, but Samsung pay will never work, even if you flash stock firmware. So before you do anything you need to make a decision about that.
I will follow this topic. Same questions than op. In my case Samsung pay does not work in my country

I never used samsung pay and I don't think I ever will.. If secure folder can be accessed flashing a custom ROM, the one and only app I would now be worried about is SAMSUNG PASS as I love the fact that I never even have to put the username, let alone the password while accessing my university website which instantly scans my iris and puts me through.. I don't know what I'm gonna do in the end, but if I can't use samsung pass after rooting, it is something I'll miss a lot.. hope I made my point clear..

Oreo brings the Google equivalent to Samsung Pass so you'll still have that as an alternative
I have an s8 SM-G950f ( Exynos Variant ) Stock rom nougat 7.0
I have installed TWRP and rooted phone
To add to @sofir786 installing TWRP will trip knox - no going back so things like secure folder, samsung pay etc won't work.
at this stage the only way around a trip knox is a new mother board or a new phone
Knox security apparently is a samsung thing.
Not sure about samsung pass but when i try to run it it picks up that the phone is rooted and not that knox is tripped.
Note:The only samsung apps i really use is e-mail and maybe internet so tripping the knox didn't worry me.
Also the device status (Settings - about phone - status -device status)will change from official to custom
Basically no more OTA software updates (can up be done manually though)
Another thing to consider in regards to rooting your phone (as their are many methods) is whether
or not you are worried about passing google's safety net and it it can also effect playstore certification(certified to uncertified device).
FYI : i am using TWRP ver3.2.1.0
Magisk for rooting phone (passes saftey net and has root hiding capabilities for apps looking for root)
i don't know to much about custom roms as i have only used stock roms.If i want a custom rom
feel i use an xposed module to do it,something like gravity box
If you do decide to install twrp and root the first thing to do is chech/make sure that your bootloader(OEM0
is unlocked.

Something i forgot to mention is modifying your phone may void your warranty.
If you are using a carrier locked phone rooting your phone does not unlock you from that
carrier - separate issue
Custom rom,s i can,t really help you with ( there's a few ) as i am using stock rom. Same goes for themeing
a search on XDA will give you more info
Since i have rooted my phone any apps(bloatware) that i don't want i have either frozen or uninstalled.
My first step in all this was to find more info about your phone.Apart from the info in settings-about phone
i used an app CPU-Z or My device (or both) both from playstore.
If you have the Snapdragron variant of the s8 (mines Exynos) processor i may be of little help to you as i haven't kept
up to date with Snapdragon variants (you will need an unlocked bootloader(OEM))

Edit: i would first do a backup of any files/apps

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S8 using XDA Labs
Hoping someone might be able to share the latest with me , on what I am sure is a well-covered subject by now. I am familiar with ODIN panel from around 8 years ago, so I assume I will have to download both a working version of ODIN panel, as well as Root, TWRP, Recovery, and ROM, zips, and then use ODIN to flash the phone. It has just been a while And I am looking for a walk through, and links to the stuff I need. If' ChazzMatt is around maybe I can benefit from his mighty knowledge.
Thanks!
P.S. will rooting also kill the insistent SecurityLogAgent message "Unauthorized actions have been detected" message from returning as well?

Galaxy S7 Edge SM-G935A Root...
I would also like to know how to root my Galaxy s7 Edge SM-G935A from AT&T. I've been looking with no success. I was hoping to upgrade firmware to either Lineage OS or Exynos but it's looking like this might not be possible due to the chip AT&T used not being flashable or something?
I was hoping to at least have root access in order to use some apps that require root. Lots of stuff for other G935_ phones with other carriers
Hope there's some replies... Thanks

Can't do custom ROMs since Snapdragon 820 bootloaders are locked down well, and haven't been unlocked to be able to flash a Custom ROM AFAIK.
But I do think you're able to root? Just know it will probably 'Trip your Knox counter'. I think you can use CF Auto-Root to to root it
