Are we talking about the Simple Touch or the Simple Touch Glow model here?
stupid autocorrecting keyboard.. Instead WAS supposed to be NST. And with the Glow Gen1 added on...
Nook Simple Touch Glow (First generation with the SD card)
And now of course long after it was rooted it had some hard crash when I picked a "com.android.settings" entry from Nook Tools (I think that where I saw it) that has messed it up. It did a factory reset on its own from the crash. Now it won't go past "Registering your device". Been rooted for about a year.
Try resetting it by holding both bottom page turn buttons while powering it on, much easier way to factory reset than the 8 failed boot attempts. If that doesn't work why can't you just boot into cwm and restore a nandroid? Yeah as many of us can attest, read and re-read the thread on what actually works properly with nook color tools. :banghead:

Button command to get it into CWM during boot?
I did the forced factory reset last night. same hang point.
Did you copy the cwm image to a micro SD and make a nandroid after rooting? Most people just leave it on the card, you just insert it and power up into recovery, really not much need to actually replace the stock recovery. If you don't have that did you make a backup with nook manager before rooting?

That's unfortunate, I kept the 2GB card with Nook manager and the gapps package along with the virgin system backup so I can go back to completely stock by just booting from the card and restoring the original image, use an 8 GB card with cwm and numerous nandroids to roll back to for when I run into problems with apps or settings without having to unroot, and then the 32 GB for storage. After you rooted did you make a backup and transfer it to your pc before wiping the card?

Thanks! NookManager's factory image restore vs the Nooks own Factory Reset did it. I was missing a few graphical elements I had not noticed. No decline on the T'n'C, no numbers in the upper right corner.
Now to reroot and see to the original post reason...
VPN.. Is it possible?
I have to experiment with my phone being the intermediary. It'll be a hotspot and it can tie to my VPN. Maybe the phone connecting to the VPN and hosting a hotspot will let it slip through that way. Dunno. If I can get the nook to do VPN directly that would be better.

BTW, don't forget to re-update your software to 1.2.1 before rooting again (because the reset brought it back to 1.1.5).
I'll do some research/testing on the actual VPN issue. I don't know much about it.
I don't recall if android 2.1 had VPN natively or not. Most the VPN apps I see connect to a specific services. I need to connect to my own. I need to poke around later to see what I find.

"Vpn menu" did not work. It is supposed to bring up the built in menu, since it doesn't I have to guess that was removed from the nook and the root package glownooter did not reinstall it. Had hoped it was just hidden away and vpn menu would access it.

Excited as all outdoors because it was already rooted. Got home, sat down and went to put in my information, hmmmmmm, I got it from a black guy but there's a asian gmail account. :sirens: Maybe he purchased it from the guy just as I've done. I enter my account info and try to remove his, the apps need his so I cant delete him. Nothing a wipe won't fix right? Wrong. So after reading here a very small amount I realize I may need the original owner's B&N account info to resolve this.
Anyone care to chime in on this before I bother this guy for my money back?
Try to do a full wipe and return to original firmware. Then register an account for BN. Flash to cm7 afterwards. Hopefully it will work.

Try to do the 8 failed boots and you shouldn't have to worry about it...
8 failed = system recovery (will take it back to stock)
update to 1.2 if necessary
register with B&N if not going to CM7 (I do it anyway even using CM7)
Root or CM7
Now its how YOU want it... not some asian girl/guy/whatever.

If you are using CM7, the "CyanogenMod 7" logo appears when booted. There is no registration of the NC with CM7. CM7 is not rooting. It is firmware that replaces the B&N firmware.
A rooted NC will initially splash the "Read Forever tm" logo when booted. The older B&N firmware splashed "Touch the Future of Reading" logo, if I remember correctly. A rooted NC is the stock B&N firmware that has been altered to allow (root) access to the Android Market apps and still retain all the original B&N functions/features. A rooted NC does require registering the NC.
If the rooted NC is not registered to your B&N account, then:
1. Touch the "U" with the up-arrow icon, select Settings.
2. In Settings, select Device Info.
3. In Device Info, select Erase & Deregister Device.
4. Touch the Erase & Deregister Device button to start the process.
5. Follow any other instructions to complete the erase and deregister the NC process which may follow.
6. Reboot NC, it should return to stock setup, as when it was new.
7. Follow the instructions and register the device using your own B&N account.
8. Update NC to 1.2.
9. Root NC using ManualNooter 4.6.16. Instructions are here.
10. Enjoy!
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the info Bluepen.....I now have a new issue. Somehow, someway I've managed to be in a boot loop, the funny part is it's flashing between the CM7 splash and ClockworkMod Recovery. I've been searching since last evening to no avail, not one single instance matches this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried the 8x boot thing, I can't tell if it's even shutting down. Also tried the three finger deal, may need to do more research on that one. I've also formatted my sdcard so basically I'm in route to stock which I don't mind if I can just get there.

The reason I ask that is because I've been stuck on the "N" screen several times to no avail.
I don't know how it got updated, but it did. I wasn't running a custom rom or kernel or anything. It was just a stock a500.
Well now most of my apps force close, can't connect to Xda forums, wallpapers don't work, wifi barely works, etc.
Should I go back to bestbuy and exchange it? I've had it for less than a week. I just want one that works! I love this tablet though.

Was it running 3.0 or 3.1 when you got it? If so it should have prompted you and asked you if you wanted to update.
The easiest thing, especially if you are new to the world of android, would be to exchange it at Best Buy. There are ways of fixing it, but that would involve reverting back to an older honeycomb version, rooting it and possibly installing a custom ROM.
Edit - It appears you are not new the the Android world. My bad...... You probably know a lot more than I do!
Was it always giving you errors, or did they all of a sudden just pop up?
It never promoted anything, it just asked me to update acer drivers or whatever so I did. Next thing I know I'm on 3.2

First of all, please remove any task killers or "battery savers" you're using. These are pretty terrible for any android OS newer than 2.1. Try to stay away from them. You can get away with "passive" ones like as an example, Watchdog. But nothing that actively shuts down processes and such.
This isn't supposed to be possible, but do you happen to have any apps auto-moving other apps to the microSD card, or are you using any apps to do this manually? By design I don't think that can even be done inside of Honeycomb, but I'm aware that some apps 'force it'. If you do, move any and all apps on the microSD card back to the internal storage of the A500 - then remove the offending 'mover' app.
Stupid question, but have to tried powering the tablet off and back on? If not, let's try that first, shall we?
Second thing - if it's still force closing when it comes back up, try using the reset on the side of the unit. What I want is basically to have the tablet hard reset (the equivalent of removing the battery for a few seconds).
To do this put something in the little reset hole for 10 seconds or so while the unit is on, so you can see it reboot. Once it turns off you can remove the item from the hole.
Still force closing apps? Alrighty then, moving on:
If you are using a completely stock A500 (and yes, I did read that you said you are), then just factory reset it and you should be alright. It won't downgrade to 3.1, but why would you want it to? 3.2 is working great for many of us.
I'd love to get to the bottom of your force closes. But alas, that may be just a bit much to deal with for a new user so go ahead and do the factory reset.
To do a factory reset, go to Settings and then Privacy and the option is in there. I would remove the microSD if you have one inserted (it's not necessary, but just to rule anything out).
Since it's only a week old hopefully you don't have too many apps or settings invested in the tablet.
So to summarize:
1. Uninstall any and all task killers or battery savers
2a. Make sure you don't have any programs automatically moving apps to the microsd. Move any apps you have installed to the microSD back to the internal storage
2b. Remove the microSD card
3. Power cycle the device (then 4 if 3 doesn't work)
4. Hard reset the device (then 5 if 4 doesn't work)
5. Factory reset the device
If you factory reset and STILL get force closes when you're back up then unfortunately there's something wrong with either the core software (maybe a bad update) or the hardware. Return it in that case.
Good Luck. Please let me know how it goes.
I'm not new to Android, just new to this device.
I never use task killers.
No app2sd stuff.
Rebooted multiple times.
I've removed the SD card and even tried a different one.
Hard resets don't do anything for my problem.
Why would I want 3.1? To root it. 3.2 is useless to me without root. Apps like drive mount make this tablet much more useful, but they require root access.

Exactly! Currently there is no root for 3.2 on our device. Hence having to downgrade to 3.1, root, and install a pre-rooted 3.2 ROM. IMHO the stock based 3.2 ROMs are the most stable, and trouble free.
If you're not new to Android you should have no problem following the procedure.

Althought it is easier to do it with a computer (to get the files). You can download them straight to your tab, transfer the files over to your external SD card and away you go! I've installed a few ROMS without the help of my computer. Afterall, that's part of the reason why I got a Honeycomb tab, so I wouldn't have to rely on a computer unlike other "tablets" on the market LOL!

Maybe it would help if you remove all apps that require root access, FCs may be caused by them since you don't have root anymore. Actually you don't need root anymore to mount NTFS hdds - 3.2 took care for that. The one thing I need root now is to map the keys of my USB keyboard to my liking. Probably I'll flash a custom kernel when I feel the need for OC but still it runs everything I throw at it.

I uninstalled them, or most of them at least. I'll continue looking for root apps.
I've got my hdd formatted to fat32 but my tablet still doesn't see it. I really wish it could, that's why I want drive mount to work so badly. I'm not sure why it's not working though. It did before, but now that there are files on it won't. If I can fix that, I'm fine waiting for ICS.

I don't know what you mean by factory reset. Do you mean the the 8 failed boot reset? That would be gone because you just wiped your device of everything completely. You were only supposed to do the partition 2 repair. Now you need to finish the process and reinstall stock.

No need to panic. There are several ways to return back to normal. Did you install safe strap once you rooted? If so, pull battery out, replace and reboot into safestrap. Click the wipe setting and then you wipe settings to an operable state of operation.

Actually, thought of something easier. Before you power phone up... hold the menu button, volume up button and then push power button together while still holding the other 2 buttons. This will start the phone up in recovery mode. Do a factory reset from this screen. You will lose your app data however you can recover the apps via Google play store. This way you'll also keep root. Doing the Odin recovery will lose root and restore to fresh out of box condition.

But I don't want to lose my apps. I got some of them from other app stores and i have screenshots on my phone(my pictures are on my SD card), is there any way I can at least get some data of my phone?
did you try to just reboot and wait it out?

Question for you. Before you do any of this, did you try and reboot again and see what happens? Sometimes the phone does certain system checks via boot and may require a couple of minutes to do its thing. I would do this before you factory reset. Maybe it needs a moment or two. Give that a try before you do anything that will compromise your data and apps.

I turned it on with and without the sd card and no luck. let it run for 20 minutes to an hour on the verizon screen and nothing works. I just want to get at least some data off it. When I plug it in It detects it as SAMSUNG_Android and I can't access it. I only made one data backup back on 1/1/2014.

Looks like you may need to do a reset. Then, once you are reset install backup. This way you'll have some of those apps. Also, factory wipe will not delete SD card.
Yo, even *IF* you accidentally wipe your data, you're not completely out of luck. Once you get your device up and running again, I saw a guide on here once on how to mount your phone's internal nand as a harddrive on Windows and use one of those data forensic tools to recover all the deleted data. This may not work for some of your apps but you *will* get all of your screenshots/pictures/whatever files back! If ya want a can go back and look for this.

You're in luck, I found a boatload of forums you can look at! The popular choice among these is using Recuva, but all are different ways to go about it. Check these out:
Root app methods/Recuva Basics (NOOB FRIENDLY): http://www.alliance-rom.com/wiki/recover-deleted-files/
XDA Method (Windows): http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...de-internal-memory-data-recovery-yes-t1994705
MuhammadAG method (Linux): http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/mounting-your-android-devices-internal-storage/
My suggestion (Try this first with Recuva): Flash your phone back to stock, reroot (using Framaroot or other non-invasive method), get terminal emulator (*NOT* through Play Store, don't even set up Google accounts, this will potentially overwrite data), in emulator get su and type "setprop persist.sys.usb.config mass_storage" and see if that pops the cap. Samsung is stubborn tho and will not usually let this one fly. It might fly if you happen to install some other than stock rom.
Sorry that this is a lot of info... weigh your options!!
Best of luck,
Please do say thanks!

Has anyone received the 1.4 update. I read it was supposed to have started yesterday. I tried updating but no joy. ?
They pulled it because some 500GB model users got soft-bricked, and the device would only boot into fastboot (which is easily fixable by unlocking bootloader and flashing factory images).
If anyone captured the OTA url before they pulled it it would be appreciated
Got an update today

you can try HW solution by press the power manytimes when you connect power cable
HW method:
- Disconnect power cable
- Insert USB OTG cable and make sure to connect other end to a host PC
- Connect power cable to SHIELD
- Quickly start pressing power button for ~3 seconds
- Do not hold the button and connect power supply afterwards
- HDMI TV should be always connected to SHIELD
I got the update seems to be running OK...
Nice update. Now es can write to external storage devices.

Anybody else's notice the device is sluggish here an there even before the update.I got the pro version just doesn't as snappy like it was first couple weeks I had it..
Since you have a working 1.4 update, could you boot up TWRP recovery, you don't need to install it, and backup system, then upload it where people can access it please? Proferably with the boot partition in case something changed there. As for speed, your drive needs trimmed. They claim it's done automatically, but I'm calling BS. When I trim twice a day, the drive is much much faster. I suggest fstrim. There are ways to do it from the command line, but may as well get it automated since it helps. I do it on my SSD's also, and there is little to no life degen as some think. It has to trim before adding files anyways, just gets it done all at once.

Thanks for the tip about "fstrim". There are several in the play store. Could you please clarify which one you are using?
- Trimmer (fstrim)
- LagFix (fstrim) Free
- Lagfix (fstrim) Premium
Many thanks.

All of them work. I personally use option 1,but they all run the name command. Some devices prefer one or the other. Trimmer seems to be the most up to date.
after 1.4 anyone have issue using fastboot boot command to boot into twrp?
I tried it and it says it sending the image and finishes but the SATV just freezes on fastboot menu and you have to pull plug.

1.4 dont add support for that.
Android 6.0 will enable that by stock.
At the moment you need root access.

Mine was a little sluggish before update now after update a little worse. The whole system just seems very buggy
I guess I'll wait for the next update. Seems it's breaking things. Nothing wrong with 1.3

I used the kitkat SD card fix application in the play store and that seemed to fix the SD write issues. I was on 1.3. I don't run stock these days, so I haven't tested 1.4, but should work.
