[Q] Google Cardboard magnet (Xperia Z1 Compact) - Google Cardboard

[Stock rom, 4.4.4]
I got myself a little google cardboard kit, and everything is working fine except for the magnet switch. Is there a setting I need to turn on? I've looked through the settings app for compass settings or anything related to the magnetometer and I couldn't find anything. Anything I can try? Does the Z1 Compact have a magnetometer?

I found that the magnetic button will work if you turn the phone upside down (power and volume buttons down). This will render the startup menu and some of the apps upside down. I wrote to Unofficial Cardboard about this, and they are sending me a stronger magnet to try (in its original position on the left). Alternatively, you can reconstruct the box with the magnet on the right side, so you can mount the phone properly, right side up.

Hi
when you say unofficial, which one did you buy ? I bought one on dx.com (10$) and unfortunately, I have the same issue with my Z1 compact, the magnet is without any effect. I try the reverse side but it's the same. Let us know if stronger magnet works any better.

They told me they would send me a stronger magnet, but I still haven't received it.

guys just put the magnet on the other side of the box; it works

it doesnt.. :/

Placing the magnets on the front of the box did the job for me - so that they're right in the middle of the back of the phone.

Screen corruption when answering call with K-Jam

Hi, I was wondering if anyone suffers from screen corruption when recieving an incoming call. My screen sometimes (maybe 6 times out of 10) will go into landscape mode and result in some corruption. It will revert to normal when I actually answer the call. Sometimes, I am unable to answer the call and the caller will be sent to voicemail even though I click the green send button.
Has anyone come accross anything like this?
Thanks.
Well, there is a chance that I am psychic... Are you storing your device in the supplied holster? It has been noted that the sensor which indicates the keyboard is fully out appears to be either magnetic or sensitive to magnetic fields. So it is entirely possible that it is getting temporarily switched to landscape as you drag it out of the holster.
Neat experiment to prove this sensitivity. Take your K-Jam, turn on the power. Now, with the keyboard stowed, take your holster flap place the fuzzy side against the back of your device and slowly move it up around the right-hand edge of your device. At some point along the way your device will flip to landscape.

Ahh, its done magnetically? I was worried a microswitch would eventually wear out ;p
you are so true, it happens to me all the time, it even answers calls automaticaly, I thought I was pressing some buttons while taking it out of the holster but I tried your little experiment , it was positive all the time,
Now, how to solve this without throwing the holster away?
I notices that it happens more when the screen is facing inside, when I insert it screen outside it rarely happens!

Robert, I will pay to have you read my fortune any day!! Exactly as you said. Really gutted about having to ditch the holster, but I would rather be able to answer my calls effectively.
Thanks again, pal. Much appreciated.

Screen Rotation

Hi All,
I have updated to the latest AKU3 ROMs and also a few months ago I replaced the housing...However, I've noticed that the screen does not automatically rotate when the screen is swivelled??
Now is this because I did something during re-assembly of the housing OR is there something in the ROM's that disables the hardware somehow??
Cheers
ODY
Unlikely to be the rom, since it's part of the system HTC provided.
If it's been disassembled it's more likely that.

hey VJ, sorry to bother but do you know what jumper/cable/connector/switch to jump/disconnect/tape inside the Universal to keep it from switching?
I'm sure I saw someone mention that the screen rotation is done by a magnet and switch? It's possible that maybe a small magnet fell out during disassembly? But I have looked throught the Universal repair manual and I can't find any reference to such a magnet??
I'd be nice to know exactly where it is so one would be able to take it out, if it were easy. I don't know if I wanna disasemble mine yet...
EDIT found it!! If you use a very, very light metal chain, as I did, with a keyring @ end, you can hover it around the Universal and see the tension of the chain when it's near the magnet. the keyring sticks too!
it's on the lid, behind the video-call video camera. I'm going to check the lid part of the manual.
Well taking the screen section apart is easy! You don't have to disassemble the whole unit. Looks like my magnet fell out then! Trouble is I want to sell mine so I'll just have to declare the auto screen rotate doesn't work (I've made sure that there is the rotate screen icon on the task bar though!!)

it works!! I tested it with the very small and highly magnetic point in the bezel of my tablet PC (to hold the pen) and it did change orientation.
thing is that it seems to be stuck beside the sound-holes (when the unit is closed).
I wonder how could I disassemble the lid only? are none of those screws @ the bottom connected to the back part of the lid? if so, that would be awesome!
Hi, on the xda's ftp, you'll find the maintenance manual for Universal...may help you to disassemble yours
thanx for the link!
however, it seems rather risky to try to pry the bezel open while still on the unit. Anyways I'm doing it right know. I'll get back to you.
I did pry it out and took the magnet off... painless(*) procedure and flea-sized magnet! don't loose!
I took a couple of pictures detailing the magnet position and the lid disassembled while still on the unit.
if you want to do this procedure do not loose the tiny screws and...
(*) be careful with the outer speaker (the one that lets you hear a call while the screen is facing the keyboard when closed), it isn't hard wired, it's just two small and fine contacts that might get distorted when putting the lid cover back... I had to take mine out again to correct this problem.
also, be careful with the screw driver and digitizer, as you'll be working in very akward positions to avoid disassembling the whole unit, and take off the battery of course.
Thanks for the photos - looks like my magnet feel out so I bought some 1/8 inch square magnets from ebay. It took a couple to find the sweet spot where the screen rotated but at least it works fibe now!

no problem. I'm also going to put the magnet back, now the unit doesn't now when it's closed, and therefore the outer speaker does not work. the screen also does not turn off when closed, only when the system timer tells it too... oh well.
you can turn the screen off by pressing the power button briefly.
no ext speaker though! maybe there's a way in software to disable just the rotation; i think the guys trying to get linux comfortable on the universal have some experience with it, maybe they can help.

magnet triggers action?

happened to set my epic down on my wifes camera case, which has a magnetic closure flap...the phone was asleep when i set it down, but when it got close to the magnet, the screen turned on and skipped the "drag to unlock" screen...ive tried it numerous times since, and get the same result...
anyone else experience this?
Must be like blackberries. When you pulled them out of their case the screen would turn on and when you put them back in the screen would turn off.
Sent from my Epic using XDA app.
I remember reading about the magnetic sensor in a list of specs but this is the first time I've heard of it actually being triggered. It would be nice to see some cases that take advantage of this feature.
I just pulled a hard drive magnet off of my cubicle wall and tried it. Doesn't work for me.

Sign of a true techie...we have hard drive magnets hanging around for absolutely no reason.
I just did the same thing with the same results.

Yup, that works for me..but doesn't go to the lockscreen, immediately goes to the the home screen.
I would assume it is for either the home media dock, or an upcoming car dock, so it automatically goes into the proper program when in place.

Hope they plan on putting out a maintenance release for that..I just installed Car Home, locked the screen and put the magnet next to it and it came on in landscape mode, but just on the home screen.
Would be nice if we could use something like tasker and create a couple of actions depending on the proximity of a mgnet...
Haha all I "use" the magnet sensor for is with the Tricorder app, magnetic flux option. =P Might help to find the best spot... (I guess I'm not cool enough to have hard drive magnets at work.)
It's for the slide-out keyboard. Hold your phone in portrait and keep the magnet to the left of the LED flash. The screen will re-orient itself to landscape. Move the magnet and it will go back.

Uhh..what?! Its not for the keyboard, I do know that. But I don't know what its for.
It's for the keyboard. Put your phone in landscape mode with the on screen keyboard open. Put the magnet on the phone and the on screen keyboard will disappear.

[Q] A question about the magnet induced sleep/wake function

Hey there,
I got one of those "smart" cases which send my Nexus 10 to sleep and wake it up once i close/open the front cover.
However i wondered how this really works, is there a sensor within the Nexus 10?
Also , i lately put my Nexus 10 the wrong way round(with the screen still facing me but the lower bottom, where the pogo connector is being up and the camera being down) in the case and closed the front. As expected the Screen didnt shut nor did it wake up when i opened it.
So i guess there is no sensor on that side of the tablet? Is it possible then to harm the hardware inside by the magnet withing the case. I mean when i put it in the wrong way round.
Thanks in advance for your help!

LOL. There is no wrong way! OK. There is. Don't drop it on a hard surface.
There are magnets in your case that trigger the wake up/down of your N10.
the magnetic sensor is right about the left side of the ambient light sensor... try running a fridge magnet there and see the screen go off and on when the magnet is away...

Will S-View work on non-Samsung cases?

Hi! I am trying to find premium s-view case since the original does not stay closed but i wonder how hall sensor works and will it work with other than Samsung original cases. I am thinking about this case http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tridea-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-100-Italian-Standing-View-Cover-S-View-Case-BLUE-/221221049258?pt=UK_MobilePhones_MobilePhonesCasesPouches&hash=item3381cd53aa ! What do you think and can you recommend other high quality s-view cases? Regards, Stepanooo
I bought a Baseus flip case for $10 and cut a window out for the S-View. Works a treat (i.e., sleeps and wakes phone, displays proper notifications etc). Nice blue case too.

Thanks for reply! Just can t understand how that hall sensor works, because if i cover sensor with hand or try to imitate cover nothing happens... read that it detects magnetic field but then i wonder if something should be built in the case itself... If someone knows please reply... Thanks

There has to be a small magnet in the cover for it to work. If the magnet is close to the Hall sensor on the phone, it will switch to the s-view mode.
You can try it yourself by moving a magnet along the left side of the phone until you find the right spot...
