AOSP Push Notifications Instagram Issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have tried a variety of ROMS over the last few months, and noticed that I do not get any notifications on Instagram. I am not sure why, but my Nexus 7 running stock gets them. I have even tested this by turning Airplane mode on my Nexus 7 on, so that I can thoroughly test it on my Nexus 4 if it would receive notifications. Anyone with any possible ideas, I would be greatly appreciative and all ears.

[Q] Delayed notifications?

Hi there,
Has anyone else experience delays with push notifications on their Nexus 4? As far as I can tell, any application that uses data has their notifications delayed anywhere from a few minutes to a half an hour when the screen is off on my phone. Gmail, Google Talk, etc. all have this problem. Anyone else? Presumably this is a battery saving feature, but I'd rather have the option to turn it on or off. The problem occurs on both cell and wifi connections.
Thanks!
FK
I have also noticed the same last few days.

Tried different kernels, ROMs. It's a Nexus 4 thing.

Don't receive Whatsapp's notification when Device is on dormant mode

Dear All,
I have Nexus 4 device with stock rom and I'm facing the following issue:
When I'm not using the device for few mins and someone sends me notification in whatsapp I'm not getting it. Only when I wake up the device and open the app I'm getting the notification.
Did someone face this issue?
I'm not sure but I think this is some safe mode or something like.
Please help me with that.
Thanks,
Yotam
What kernel are you using

What will 4.2.2 do with regards to this issue?
Wifi is probably going to sleep. Go to advanced wifi settings and set it to remain always awake.
This happened to me, latest franco kernel version is somewhat fixing it!
I'm using the original kernrl, didn't change it yet?
did someone using Franco kernel and stock rom?
In the mean time I Chaged thr ROM to CM 10.1 , but I want to check it also with STOCK rom.
does someone knows which rom is the original one?
wifi sleeps when display is off, so push notifications are delayed, its a problem with 4.1.2, I currently haven't found a solution and its not my modem, wait for 4.2.2,
when streaming, display must be on to complete transfers

A work around, someone pointed out in another thread, is to set wifi deliberately to turn off when phone sleeps and leave mobile data on.. when you get a notification phone will wake and wifi will switch back on to receive notification.
can confim this works, i leave 2g only on.
Check your APN settings cos mine was doing the same thing till I changed the APN settings.

I was thinking that APN should be also an issue. in the mean time I switched to CM 10.1 and this issue dissapear
Is the problem only when you are using mobile data or is it wifi as well. Have you tried it with whatsapp plus.

It's seems that I've the same problem. When I just turn off the screen I've the notifications but when the phone sleeps more than few minutes I don't receive notifications.
I have franco r71, I see if this fix the problem as someone said before.
Is this happening to everyone or just a few people (including me)?

WhatsApp on the Nexus 4 seems to be a complete and utter disaster. I don't know why but it takes 10-20 seconds to send messages via whatsapp, even when my signal is perfectly full and I could be browsing. On my old S1, it would send them almost instantly, the N4 seems to wait, dilly dally for a little bit then send them when it's happy to. I can't tell if it's a modem issue or a bug in JB but it's getting annoying.
I regularly receive clumps of 4 or 5 messages. They do usually arrive, even when in dormant, but they don't arrive like, one after the other, they just arrive all at once.
Its the standard jb WiFi issue described in Google bug report and happens to everyone.
Whatsapp is fine over 3g if.you have a decent 3g connection. In fact I use whatsapp on 2g and notifications are instant with the screen off.
As a side note, on fauxs latest beta kernel I haven't had the signal bars turn grey.

Not for me. It's fine over WiFi. Totally b0rken over 3G, takes ages to update and send messages
FYI this also happens with Facebook messenger

Can't decide what it is. Internet browsing seems fine on this phone, but WhatsApp is ****ed.
Even further problems today, surely this is to do with the baseband?

[Q] Returning Nexus 4 because of delayed push notifications in WiFi?

I'm actually really fed up with my Nexus 4 because of the delayed push notifications. Sometimes I receive messages more than half an hour too late, although Google said they would fix this problem multiple times. I'm now on Android 4.4.2 and the problem never disappeared. I already tried multiple fixes like turning off WiFi optimization or push notifications fixer - they all don't work. The notifications get in all at once when I turn the display on.
I bought my Nexus 4 on 30th April 2013 and the problem never was a big deal for me so far. However, I now work for an IT company and I need to be reachable 24/7 and therefore should not wait for delayed push notifications on Whatsapp, Threema, Telegram, GMail, etc.
I know at least two other people who have a Nexus 4 and they all have got the same problem (newest revision of the phone and latest Android version).
So my question is: what do you think are my chances for returning my Nexus 4 device to Google and either get my money back or get another device (although I don't want another Nexus 4 and I'm not sure if the same problem occurs on the Nexus 5)?
if you live in a area where google takes care of warranty of the nexus. can be a bit harder(because lg dosent search the phone, i mean they dont look to see if you have blocked bootloader and these things).
returning only for that idk... call to see if google will accept.
if not just install some custom recovery. and format all partitions
then you can return back for the phone not turning on(since it formated every partition lol)

Not getting notifications on watch or on phone, driving me crazy!

So lately I have not been getting hangout notifications and it's driving me nuts. I have it paired to my android wear watch and 80% of the time it works fine but other times I get text messages and nothing, no buzz, not even a notification in my task manager letting me know I have a unread message, totally blank. It's not until I go into hangouts and I see the bold text that I know I got a message. Even when not paired to the watch, same thing, no buzz, sound, notificiaon icon, nothing until I open hangouts and see it.
Anyone else having this issue?? Driving me crazy and I already missed plans with friends because of it. Fully stock and on 6.0.1 as of a few days ago and still the problem.
Are you logged into hangouts on another device or computer? Also check to make sure you didn't snooze their notifications.

I had this issue. Try turning off wifi and see if it works. Mine did on cell data only. The messages would come into me on wifi, but I would just not get notified. I did a roll back on it and a re-install and it started working again normally. The first time I had this was on my Nexus 6. This is a LONG running hangouts problem ( various posts out there show it going back to 2012 ).

Severe delay in all kinds of notification on my Nexus 6P until I wake up phone screen

So I am seeing this issue increasing on daily basis. My phone is usually in my pocked (not in doze) or some times lying around on the desk (dozed/not dozed, but still notification should deliver late). But I have noticed that in both situations, I don't receive any notification until I actually turn on the screen. As soon as I turn the screen on, notifications start to come in all together.. (around 4-5 notification comes together). It seems that they were pending to be delivered but were never delivered to the device until I woke it up and data connection restored.
I understand that in doze mode, notifications are delayed but are delivered, but in my situation they are not even delivered until I turn on the screen and wait a couple to 5 seconds.
A few P.S.
- I am on Stock Android without anykind of root (systemless or regular).
- I don't have any kind of advanced battery saving mode on or app installed (greenify or clean master etc).
- I don't have battery optimization for whatsapp still no notification comes in :crying:
- I see it on both Wifi and LTE..
- Cellular notifications like sms, mms or calls are not affected with this issue, they come on time.
Bumping up this thread!
Anybody else experiencing this issue or do you have any suggestions to resolve this issue?
This is a known issue and does not need to be bumped as not only are their multiple threads about this issue but google is already actively working on a fix.... https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=197805

The thread doesn't just cover gmail. If you look past the title, they are working on fixing issues relating to push notifications in general. Gmail was just the first app reported as having issues. Push notifications currently aren't functioning correctly on the 6P. Google is working to fix the issue. If you actually google notifications not showing up on 6P, quite a few news articles and Android forums will give you the same answer I was trying to give you.
I only experience this when I turn my phone on first thing in the morning, otherwise no.
I have notification issues on almost every Android phone, when on WiFi. It seems to be a known issue but been around/unresolved forever.
I use an app called DNSet, it runs automatically at startup and fixes this issue.

Thanks for the suggestion, i'll try it myself.. and report back.
Right now I am using Push Notification Fixer and results are really mixed. It works sometimes and others are as bad as no notification for minutes or hours until screen is turned on.
Please update following defect at google bug tracker stating you are also experiencing this issue.
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=198686
Well, also if I have another phone (an Xperia) with Nougat 7.1.1 I have the same issue, which I also faced on older version of Android (eg on a Wiko Rainbow Jam with Lollipop)
I'm doing some tests in the generic section of the forum:

I know you said it's happening on both LTE and Wi-Fi, but many people look past their carrier / geographic location as the culprit. Please update your XDA profile with that information. Everyone should have this most basic information in their profile. Thanks.
